Times have changed and so must our approach to the maintenance and development of your fire detection system.

Imagine a fire control panel installed in 1985 is a computer – the differences in the technology, components and capabilities of a computer produced today compared to 1985 are phenomenal!

Our recommendation is that 3400 systems are updated. The replacement programme can be planned to run over a period of time, It is not necessary to replace the complete system at once.

Sites with Gent systems that pre-date Vigilon miss out on ground breaking technology developments.

What is the Gent by Honeywell recommendation for supporting Control Panels?

The manufacturer’s recommendation is as follows:

Upgrade your old 3400 panel to the latest Vigilon system with a Compact-24, Vig1-24 or a Vig1-72.

Please note that if the system is networked and not all panels are replaced with new Vigilon panels, you will require a BS conversion kit, once all panels are upgraded to Vigilon the BS conversion can be replaced and all panels will be EN54 compliant.

The Vigilon System is Gent’s current product range and benefits from dedicated R&D resource and support. In the unlikely event that spares are required they are readily available from the manufacturer.

What is the Gent by Honeywell recommendation for supporting Loop devices?

The Vigilon system can support all 3400 and 34000 devices as well as the current S-Cubed and S-Quad. This means that it is not necessary to replace all the devices on the loop when choosing to upgrade.

The added functionality that you will gain from the combination of the powerful Vigilon panel and the market leading S-Quad devices will deliver increased functionality that will benefit all types of sites.

Any new panel will carry a full manufacturers warranty from Gent by Honeywell.



Can’t I just get a software upgrade?

While it is possible to upgrade the software on the 3400 panels, S-Quad devices will still not be supported. To get S-Quad and all its alarm management benefits onto your site, you will need to install a Vigilon panel.

A software upgrade on its own will restrict the flexibility and the capability of your site, as you will not be able to take advantage of the latest technology.

Can I mix Vigilon and 3400 on the same site?One solution is to network a Vigilon panel to a 3400 panel network to drive S-Quad technology. This will result in a mixture of technologies across the site.

The mixture of Vigilon and 3400 panels on one site means that different areas on the same site will be capable of different functions. This will deliver a mixed level of service from the network to different areas of the site.

If you go down the road of networking 3400 and Vigilon, all panels on the network must be BS variants. The S-Quad can be connected to Vigilon panels only. Some fault messages will not be transmitted unless the 3400 panel is upgraded. Any Network Nodes would also need to be upgraded.



Can I use Vigilon Compact as an alternative to Vigilon to upgrade?

Note: The Vigilon Compact panel can not be connected to a network containing 3400 panels

Won’t it be cheaper for me to have a software upgrade to the 3400 panels?

In the short term – yes – the software upgrade option is cheaper, however this lower price comes with increased risks.

Software upgrades to existing 3400 panels will not benefit from any level of warranty.

As 3400 systems are no longer manufactured by Gent by Honeywell, the availability of spares is limited and component failure may result in changing the panel in any case.

A full upgrade to Vigilon will ensure that you can take full advantage of all the benefits of the latest technology including the S-Quad sensors, beams and interfaces.

Any new panel installed is covered by our manufacturer’s warranty. We would also recommended that you have the appropriate maintenance schedule in place with a Gent Approved System Integrator to ensure that you comply fully with the latest legislation.


Why should I spend more money to replace the system with Vigilon?

Does my 3400 system comply with current legislation and standards?

Certainly at the time that the system was developed, 3400 met every appropriate standard and ensured that the customer complied with the standards.

Since the panel is no longer manufactured, and electronics have advanced at such a pace, the 3400 and 32000 panels are no longer compliant to the latest EN54 standard.

It is Gent by Honeywell’s policy to submit all Vigilon System components for LPCP for testing and certification to the latest EN54 standards.
