Compact RadiusThe 328D LCR has been designed to rotate with a minimal amount of counterweight hanging over the tracks, which allows it to work in tight, confined areas.

Space Restriction. The increasing need to work within space-restricted areashas created a demand for larger excavators that can also work within tighterquarters and provide greater productivity. The newest addition to this lineupof Compact Radius (CR) excavators is the 328D LCR.

Productivity. Even though the 328D LCR has been designed for use inspecific applications that require high maneuverability in confined spaces, it still maintains the ability to accomplish tasks in a variety of applicationswhere space is not a factor.

Swing Radius. The Caterpillar 328D LCR has a tail swing radius of 1900 mm as compared to 3080 mm for the standard Caterpillar 325D L. This reduction of tail swing may allow for swing operation with greaterconfidence knowing that the tail of the machine only has a minimal amountof overhang.

Lift and Stability. The boom on the 328D LCR has been moved more towardsthe center of the machine, this results in overall greater lift capacity over the front as compared to the standard 325D L. In addition to the repositioningof the boom, the Cat 328D LCR utilizes the undercarriage of the 330D L,which allows for an extremely stable operating platform.

EngineBuilt for power reliability, economy and low emissions.

Cat C7 ACERT. The Cat C7 with ACERTTechnology introduces a series ofevolutionary, incremental improvementsthat provide breakthrough enginetechnology. The building blocks ofACERT Technology are fuel delivery,air management and electronic control.ACERT Technology optimizes engineperformance while meeting EU StageIIIA engine emission regulations.

Performance. The 328D LCR, equippedwith the C7 engine with ACERTTechnology, provides 8% morehorsepower as compared to the 3126BATAAC HEUI in the 325C LCR.

Automatic Engine Speed Control.The two-stage, one-touch controlmaximizes fuel efficiency andreduces sound levels.

ADEM™ A4 Engine Controller.The ADEM A4 electronic controlmodule manages fuel delivery to getthe best performance per liter (gallon)of fuel used. The engine managementsystem provides flexible fuel mapping,allowing the engine to respond quicklyto varying application needs. It tracksengine and machine conditions whilekeeping the engine operating atpeak efficiency.

Electronic Control Module.The Electronic Control Module (ECM)works as the “brain” of the engine’scontrol system, responding quickly tooperating variables to maximize engineefficiency. Fully integrated with sensorsin the engine’s fuel, air, coolant, andexhaust systems, the ECM stores andrelays information on conditions suchas rpm, fuel consumption, and diagnosticinformation.

Fuel Delivery. The Cat C7 featureselectronic controls that govern the fuelinjection system. Multiple injectionfuel delivery involves a high degreeof precision. Precisely shaping thecombustion cycle lowers combustionchamber temperatures, generatingfewer emissions and optimizing fuelcombustion. This translates into morework output for your fuel cost.

Cooling System. The cooling fanis directly driven from the engine.An electrically controlled viscousclutch fan is utilized to reduce fan noise.The optimum fan speed is calculatedbased on the target engine speed, coolanttemperature, hydraulic oil temperatureand actual fan speed. The 328D LCRincorporates side by side cooling,allowing easy access to keep the coolingcores free of debris.

Air Cleaner. The radial seal air filterfeatures a double-layered filter corefor more efficient filtration and is locatedin a compartment behind the cab. A warning is displayed on the monitorwhen dust accumulates above a presetlevel.

Noise Reduction Technologies.The engine mounts are rubber-isolatingmounts matched with the engine package.Further noise reduction has beenachieved through design changes tothe isolated top cover, oil pan, multipleinjection strategy, insulated timing cover,sculpted crankcase and gear trainrefinements.

HydraulicsCat hydraulics deliver power and precise control to keep material moving.

Component Layout. The hydraulicsystem and component locations havebeen designed to provide a high levelof system efficiency. The main pumps,control valves and hydraulic tank arelocated close together. This allowsfor shorter tubes and lines betweencomponents, which reduce friction loss,and pressure drops in the lines. Thelayout further provides greater operatorcomfort by placing the radiator on thecab side of the upper structure. Thisallows incoming air to enter the enginecompartment from the operator side. Hot air and corresponding engine soundexits on the opposite side away fromthe operator. This reduces enginecompartment heat and sound beingtransmitted to the operator.

Pilot System. The pilot pump isindependent from the main pumps andcontrols the front linkage, swing andtravel operations.

Hydraulic Cross Sensing System.The hydraulic cross sensing systemutilizes each of two hydraulic pumps to100 percent of engine power, under alloperating conditions. This improvesproductivity with faster implementspeeds and quicker, stronger pivot turns.

Boom and Stick Regeneration Circuit.Boom and stick regeneration circuitsaves energy during boom-down andstick-in operation. This increasesoperator efficiency, reduces cycle timesand pressure loss. Benefits includehigher productivity, lower operatingcosts and increased fuel efficiency.

Auxiliary Hydraulic Valve. The auxiliaryvalve is standard on the 328D LCR.Control Circuits are available asattachments, allowing for operationof high and medium pressure tools.These include shears, grapples,hammers, pulverizers, multi-processorsand vibratory plate compactors.

Hydraulic Cylinder Snubbers.Snubbers are located at the rod-end ofthe boom cylinders and both ends of the stick cylinders. Benefits includereducing sound levels, cushion shockswhile extending component life.

Operator StationDesigned for simple, easy operation and comfort, the 328D LCR allows the operator to focus on production.

Operator Station. The workstation is spacious, quiet andcomfortable, assuring high productivity during a longworkday. The attachment switches, key switch and throttledial are conveniently located on the right-hand wall. The monitor is easy to see and maximizes visibility.

Joystick Control. The joystick controls are designed for low lever effort and match operator’s natural wrist and armposition. The operator can operate the joystick controls withan arm on the armrest. Horizontal and vertical strokes havebeen designed to reduce operator fatigue.

Seat. The air suspension seat is standardin the 328D LCR, provides a variety ofadjustments to suit the operator’size andweight including fore/aft, height andweight. Wide adjustable armrest and aretractable seat belt are also included

Automatic Climate Control. Fullyautomatic climate control adjuststemperature and flow, and determineswhich air outlet is best in each situationwith a touch of a button.

Hydraulic Activation Control Lever.For added safety, this lever must bein the operate position to activate themachine control functions.

Skylight. An enlarged skylight withsunshade provides excellent visibilityand ventilation.

Door. The 328D LCR features a curvedsliding door. This feature is ideal forthose situations when space is restrictedand opening a conventional door is notpermissible.

Windows. All glass is affixed directly to the cab for excellent visibilityeliminating window frames. The upperfront windshield opens, closes and storeson the roof above the operator with aone-touch action release system.

Wipers. Pillar-mounted wipers increasethe operator’s viewing area and offercontinuous and intermittent modes.

Monitor. The monitor is a full color 400 x 234 pixels Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) graphic display. The angle can beadjusted to minimize sun glare and hasthe capability of displaying informationin twenty-seven different languages.

Pre-Start Check. Prior to starting themachine, the system will check for lowfluid levels. These include engine oil,hydraulic oil and engine coolant.The event display area warns theoperator if one of the conditions exists.

Gauge Display. Three analog gauges,fuel level, hydraulic oil temperatureand coolant temperature, are displayed in this area.

Event Display. Machine information isdisplayed in this area with the icon andlanguage.

Multi-information Display. This areais reserved for displaying variousinformation which is convenient for theoperator. The “CAT” logo is displayedwhen no information is available tobe displayed.

Console. Redesigned consoles featurea simple, functional design to reduceoperator fatigue, ease of switchoperation and excellent visibility. Both consoles have attached armrestswith height adjustments.

Cab Exterior. The exterior design usesthick steel tubing along the bottomperimeter of the cab, improving theresistance of fatigue and vibration.This design allows the FOGS to bebolted directly to the cab, at the factoryor as an attachment later, enabling themachine to meet specifications and jobsite requirements.

Cab Mounts. The cab shell is attachedto the frame with viscous rubber cabmounts, which dampen vibrationsand sound levels while enhancingoperator comfort.

Standard Cab Equipment. To enhanceoperator comfort and productivity, thecab includes a drink holder, coat hook,service meter, literature holder andmagazine rack.

StructuresStructural components and undercarriage are the backbone of the machine’s durability.

Robotic Welding. Up to 95% of the structural welds on a CaterpillarExcavator are completed by robots.Robotic welds achieve over threetimes the penetration of manual welds.

Carbody Design and Track RollerFrames. X-shaped, box-sectioncarbody provides excellent resistanceto torsional bending. Robot-weldedtrack roller frames are press-formed,pentagonal units to deliver exceptionalstrength and service life.

Main Frame. Rugged main frame isdesigned for maximum durability andefficient use of materials.

Swing Bearing. The swing bearingutilizes cross roller bearings versus thetraditional ball bearing design. Thecross roller bearing design allows formore surface contact to absorb the

stresses that are a result of the highswing torque that Cat offers. It provides exceptional machinestability and reduces machine pitchingduring boom down operation.

Undercarriage. Durable Catundercarriage absorbs stresses andprovides excellent stability.

Rollers and Idlers. Sealed andlubricated track rollers, carrier rollers,and idlers provide excellent servicelife, to keep the machine in the fieldlonger.

Long Undercarriage. The long (L)undercarriage maximizes stability andlift capacity. Two additional tracklinks have been added to the 328DLCR. This long, wide, and sturdyundercarriage offers a very stablework platform.

Booms, Sticks and LinkageDesigned for flexibility, high productivity, and efficiency in a variety of applications.

Reach Boom. The reach boom (6150 mm) is designedto balance reach, digging force bucket capacity,offering a wide range of applications as digging,loading, trenching and working with hydraulic tools.

R3.2CB2 Stick. The CB-family buckets associatedwith these sticks have enough capacity for excellentreach and depth in trenching and general constructionapplications.

Linkage Pins. The bucket linkage pins have beenenlarged to improve reliability and durability. All thepins in the front linkages have thick chrome plating,giving them high wear and corrosion resistance.

Bucket Linkage. The power link improves durability,increases machine-lifting capability in key liftingpositions and with the integrated lift-eye it is easierto use than compared to the previous power link.
