From the Desk of Father Ed:

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend is the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our Gospel today Jesus once again gives a parable to teach us. The parable consists of two men, one who was well respected, a religious leader of Jesus’ time, and perhaps considered righteous by many, a Pharisee. The other a sinner of the worst kind, a tax collector. Tax collectors were considered traders because they were Jews who abandoned their faith and country and went to work for the enemy, the Romans. Both men entered the temple area to pray. “The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity-greedy, dishonest, adulterous-or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’”

Once again we see a twist at the ending of Jesus’ parable. It would seem that the Pharisee’s prayer would be the one most pleasing to God. However, Jesus tells us the opposite, It is the tax collector, not the Pharisee who is justified. And “whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” The Pharisee in our parable most likely saw himself as righteous and pleasing to God. Perhaps others also pictured this Pharisee as someone holy and justified before God. Yet, the Lord prefers the prayer of the sinful but humble tax collector. The tax collector clearly showed his humility before God. He stood at a distance and did not even look up to God but rather struck his breast and only asked for mercy. Even his posture revealed his lowliness before the Lord.

Jesus reminds us that God not only sees everything we do but he also knows our hearts. Jesus’ mission was to come into the world to save sinners not the righteous or those who falsely believed themselves to be righteous. St. John tells us that all of us are sinners. Jesus is the divine physician and all of us are in need of his healing.

Our Gospel today invites us to always approach the Lord with humility recognizing that we are sinners who have been made righteous through the love of Jesus and the Father.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us,

Father Ed,

Administrator
