Coping with Distracons

By Fr. Mike Muhr

Anyone who has ever really tried to pray

reflec.vely knows about distrac.ons and how

frustra.ng they can be. I’m talking about those

pesky thoughts that come barreling into our minds

when we try to become s.ll and quiet for any

length of .me. For me, they usually show up

about one and a half minutes into my .me with

God.

St. Teresa of Avila struggled with distrac.ons for

almost twenty years before God led her into a way

of great interior communion. She suggested to her

novices that they hold a picture of Jesus when they

prayed so that they could remember that they

were talking to a person in prayer and not just

making a mental exercise.

The advice I have found most helpful is to imagine

distrac.ons as if they were a train crossing through

a valley. The train comes into view and will pass on

through the valley without our effort. In prayer, we

would acknowledge the distrac.on lightly and then

return to prayer as the distrac.on dri9s out of our

consciousness.

Trying to push distrac.ons out usually only makes

them more persistent and “ge;ng on the train”,

well, then we know where that leads. There may

be .mes when a certain distrac.on keeps coming.

This could be a sign that this is exactly what the

Lord wants us to pray about. In the end, though,

for most of us distrac.ons come with the territory.

Parte 2

Me refiero a esos

nuestro esfuerzo.

6 ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH / ORLANDO, FL

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF PARISH LIFE

Today’s gospel is familiar to most of us. Jesus clarifies

God’s law with the great commandments, “you shall love

the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,

and with all your mind” and “you shall love your neighbor

as yourself” (Matthew, chapter 22). They sound simple,

but we know they present a challenge. Letting God take

hold of everything (i.e. our body, our soul, and our

intellect) is not an easy achievement. Loving everyone

around as in such a way that they remain on the par with

ourselves (i.e. like having them be one of us or part of our

family) establishes an intimacy that demands relationship

– and again, this is definitely not an easy task.

In catechetical language – the Church’s evangelizing

and teaching vocabulary – our symbol of love is the

Cross. Certainly, Christ’s own sacrifice – His passion, His

death, His resurrection – is an obvious example of “loving

God” and “loving neighbor” and the Cross leads us to

ponder Jesus in this way;

however, I am referring to the

Cross itself with its vertical

and horizontal dimensions

that lift us toward the divine

and propel us across the

boundaries of our horizon to

love God and to love

neighbor.

A former seminary classmate

of mine is the rector of his

diocese’s cathedral. His

ministry has led him to

support his parishioners’

spiritual lives by encouraging

their intentional commitment

to three things: 1) study, 2)

pray, and 3) serve in order to

keep God and neighbor first.

It is good advice. Knowing our faith, keeping the channel

of grace open, and being Christ to others are essential

aspects of discipleship which we all must emulate.

Last week we underscored these points with the parents

and godparents who attended our pre-baptism seminars

in preparation for our celebrations of infant baptism. We

encouraged them, just as we encourage you and

everyone, to be involved in the life of our parish. We have

ample opportunities to study, to pray, and to serve and

we can grow and create more with your ideas and

involvement.

Despite the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic we

continue to be vibrant and to thrive as a parish

community. Some things just need to be done differently

than they were before to ensure everyone’s safety and

security. Regardless, we are grateful for your generosity

and involvement.

God bless you and have a fabulous week!...

Amar

padres y padrinos quien asistieron nuestros seminarios

DENNIS L. JOHNSON, JR.
