Jesus, Our Healer of Body & Soul

In the First Reading, we find a contrast to today’s Gospel. Job has lost everything and is emphasizing the futility and fleeting nature of life. He’s searching for relief from his de-pression and discouragement. Today’s Gospel’s gives the response: Jesus is the one who brings healing into our lives. The Responsorial Psalm calls us to praise the Lord for His goodness. No matter how much we try we’ll always fail if we rely solely on our own strength. The existence of all creation depends on Him. He alone is omnipotent and omniscient. His very naming of the stars is an act of dominion. Yet He reaches down to sustain the humble. God is not so great as to forget the weak and powerless. He heals the brokenhearted, gathers the dispersed and punishes the wicked. In the Second Reading, St Paul addresses life’s takers; those who insist on their rights and what they can get out of life. He explains that true Christianity is recognizing that since God created us in His image and to be like Him, then our greatest human and self-fulfillment lies in giving. Today’s Gospel presents the account of Jesus healing St Peter ’s mother-in-law. What is different here is her appropriate response: she does not draw attention to herself, but re-sponds to Jesus’ graciousness by serving. When Jesus exorcised demons out of people, He did not allow them to speak. He knew the crowds would misunderstand His role as Messi-ah. He was not a political leader or miracle worker. He came to heal hearts and call us to conversion. Jesus was not the Messiah people wanted, but the One they needed. This is why, after praying in the desert Jesus moved on to other villages to proclaim God’s Word to new listeners.

St. John the Baptist - Folsom, CA 3

In 2016, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found that one in six endangered run-aways has likely been trafficked. Globally, the statistics are worse. Each year, an estimated 17,000 vulnerable men, women and children are traf-ficked across our borders and forced into slavery. Many fleeing terrible situations in their home countries, hoping to find a better life here. Unfortunately, the nightmare often begins when they reach our shores. Taken from her family and trafficked, Jose-phine found physical freedom in an Italian convent and spiritual freedom in God. Today, she is considered a kindred spirit to those who are trafficked worldwide. February 8 has been desig-nated an annual day of prayer and awareness against human traf-ficking. Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phe-nomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experienc-es of those that have suffered through this affront to human dig-nity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.

St. Bakhita was born in 1869 in the Darfur region of Sudan. Due to her

family lineage, she grew up happy and relatively prosperous, saying that as a child, she did not know suffering. At the age of 9, Bakita was kidnapped by Arab slave traders. For the next 12 years she would be bought, sold and given away over a dozen times. She spent so much time in captivity that she forgot her original name. Her kidnappers gave her the name Bakhita, meaning “fortunate. As a slave, her experiences varied from fair treatment to cruel. She told about how the general's wife or-dered her to be scarred. As her mistress watched, ready with a whip, another woman drew patterns on her skin with flour, then cut into her flesh with a blade. She rubbed the wounds with salt to make the scars permanent. She would suffer a total of 114 scars from this abuse. In 1883, the Turkish general sold her to the Italian Vice Consul. Two years later, he took Bakhita to Italy to work as a nanny for his colleague, Augusto Michieli. He, in turn, sent Bakhita to accompany his daughter to a school in Venice run by the Canossian Sisters. While she was in the custody of the sisters, she came to learn about God. According to Bakhita, she had always known about God, who created all things, but she did not know who He was. The sisters answered her questions. She was deeply moved by her time with the sisters and discerned a call to follow Christ. She was baptized with the name “Josephine Margaret.” In the meantime, Michieli wanted to take Josephine and his daughter back to Sudan, but Josephine refused to return. The disagreement escalated and was taken to the Italian courts where it was ruled that Josephine could stay in Italy because she was a free woman. Slavery was not recognized in Italy and it had also been illegal in Sudan since before Josephine had been born. For the first time in her life, Josephine was free and could choose what to do with her life. Josephine remained in Italy and decided to enter the Canos-sians in 1893. She made her profession in 1896 and was sent to Northern Italy, where she dedicated her life to assisting her community and teaching others to love God. She was known for her smile, gentleness and holiness. She even went on record saying, “If I were to meet the slave-traders who kidnapped me and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that did not happen, I would not be a Christian and Religious today.” In her later years, she began to suffer physical pain and was forced to use a wheelchair. But she always re-mained cheerful. If anyone asked her how she was, she would reply, "As the master desires." On the evening of February 8, 1947, Josephine spoke her last words, "Our Lady, Our Lady!" She then died. In 1958, the process of her canonization began. On December 1st, 1978, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable. Sadly, the news of her beatification in 1992 was censored in Sudan. But just nine months later, Pope John Paul II visited Sudan and honored her publicly. He canonized her on October 1, 2000.

World Day of the Sick

In observance of World Day of the Sick a special Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 12 at 10:00 am. We will pray for the sick and their caregivers. The Mass will also include Anointing of the Sick and special blessings. You can be anoint-ed for physical, spiritual or emotional issues. All are welcome.

After the Mass, there will be a luncheon in Gallagher Hall.

If you would like to attend the luncheon, please call the office at (916-985-2065) no later than

Wednesday, February 7, 2018.

The World Day of the Sick, is an event held on a different conti-nent each year. It was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1992 to encourage people to pray for those who suffer from illness and for their caregivers. It is observed on February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. He wanted to emphasize the importance of human suffering as the aspect of our Christian spirituality that through suffering it unites us with Jesus, we sanctify ourselves, but also bring others to Jesus. We may not be physically healed but it can be a time for spiritual healing and gaining spiritual strength.

“To you, dear sick people all over the world... may this event bring the announcement of the living and comforting presence of the Lord. Your sufferings, accepted and borne with unshakeable faith, when joined to those of Christ take on extraordinary value

for the life of the Church and the good of humanity.”

~Pope John Paul for The First Annual World Day of the Sick, 21 October 1992

Men’s Retreat The dates for our annual men's weekend retreat at Christ the King Retreat Center are February 9 - 11, 2018. Explore the Gospel of St. Mark and how the "Passion" of Jesus included His empathy and

dedication to the poor and oppressed of His time. Prepare to experience four insightful conferences and be inspired by the the "plunging" of Jesus into the brokenness of humanity so that we may understand our own values and how they pertain to everyday life. For more information or to make your reservation, call Doug Heinz at 983-4516 or the Retreat Center at (916) 725-4720 Ext. 301. Micro Giving Works! We received $900 in total donations, in our first month!

Micro giving is working for us in a big way for St John’s. With less than 10% of the Parish Participating, we received our first donation check of $900. Check out this effortless way to help our parish - Round ups! Here’s how round ups work - buy a cup of coffee for $2.49, the ‘round up’ to the next dollar ($3.00) is .51 cents. That $.51 is donated to the parish through a company called We Micro Give. We Micro Give has put together a web site specifically for our parish. Just designate a credit or debit card for “round up” transactions, and We Micro Give handles the rest using a secure encrypted system recognized by 9,000 financial institutions. Round ups are calculated daily, added up, then a single donation is delivered to St John’s at the end of the month. You have full control and can track your dona-tions on a donor dashboard, set limits or give a fixed amount or stop at any time. (Donation from this program will be used for facilities and school support.)

Next weekend, on February 10-11, we will once again be given the opportunity to be Christ to others. How do we help a family that

has suffered great loss? How do we help the homeless man or woman who is looking for a way out of poverty? How do we assist those in need? As Catholics in the Diocese of Sacra-mento, we have a way to help those truly in need. By making a generous donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal, you can live the Gospel message to help our brothers and sisters. Last year 545 of our parish families contributed $196,000. Our parish received 25% to support the works of our social justice ministries. The charitable works of the Church, whether in Catholic social service programs or parish-based outreach ministries, depend on all of us. Each of our gifts, no matter the amount, really does make a difference in someone’s life. Please prayerfully consider what you can give. Our gift is the Heart of Mercy in Northern California.

Christmas gifts were given to over 400 children including teens. And our Religious Education classes adopted 11 of our families for Christmas. Multiple families called to express their gratitude. We also want to thank local businesses who donate food to our food closet on a regular basis: Safeway, Grocery Outlet and Trader Joe’s. Twin Lakes Food Bank also shares their donations. We are grateful to Father Sylvester for his support. Lastly, a BIG Thank You to our St. Vincent de Paul volunteers who give of their time to ensure that all who come to St. Vincent de Paul receive what they need.

If you are interested in volunteering and would like to serve in this ministry, please contact John or Mercy Knight. You can stop in at the Helping Hands Building on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon or call (916) 985-4630.

May God bless you and your families.

Thanks to you, 2017 was a very good year! St. Vincent de Paul has been able to assist those in need in our community and some of the neighboring areas that do not have a St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Each month we are able to pro-vide food for over 1,000 adults and children. In 2017, we were also able to assist more than 100 families with rent and utilities. This is attributed to all of your donations - financial, food and goods. Our Fifth Sunday collection in December exceeded $6,000 plus over $1,500 that was mailed or hand carried to St. Vincent de Paul.

We were able to provide hams and turkeys (with the fixings) to more than 200 families for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. This was possible due to your donations of hams, turkeys, the sides and money; and our St. John Notre Dame school’s donations of food, gift cards and money; as well as the various groups such as the cub scouts and boy scouts who organized neighborhood food drives.

Rachel’s Vineyard Healing Retreat Friday, Feb. 16 at 2pm - Sunday, Feb. 18 at 5pm

“Women and men may experience unresolved feelings following the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. These feelings may surface right away or may not appear until years later. Grief following an abortion is rarely discussed or acknowledged, which often makes it harder to verbalize unresolved feelings.

Come and experience God's healing love and forgiveness in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.

Open to men and women. The cost is $175 per person and financial assistance is available to anyone who needs it.

Learning Dementia Language Stephanie Wilson, Program Supervisor

Triple R Adult Day Program, City of Sacramento One of the most stressful aspects in providing care for some-one with memory loss is feeling as if you cannot communi-cate with each other. If the person with dementia does not feel understood, they may appear anxious and irritated or even prone to wandering or agitation. In this workshop, we explore ways to recognize the non-verbal cues your loved one may be giving you and advice about how to structure conversations to best meet the communication needs for the person with dementia.

St. John Notre Dame School

At St. John Notre Dame School, our teachers model a Christian lifestyle for the children, creating an envi-

ronment where prayer permeates throughout the entire commu-nity. Our students attend Mass every Friday and celebrate the Sacraments frequently. We are a community of the Eucharist, putting Christ first in all that we do! Our students learn the Catechism of the Catholic Church and are engaged in service, charity and academic excellence, all of which are building blocks of great servant leaders. We understand that parents are the primary educators of their children and support the domes-tic Church in a supplementary role. We are faith filled, we are service oriented, we are an academically rigorous school, we are St. John Notre Dame. To all of the parish families who have yet to enroll your child(ren), please consider scheduling a tour and meeting with the faculty. You will come to see, very quickly, why St. John Notre Dame is not only the primary edu-cational ministry of St. John the Baptist Parish, but also one for the finest schools in the Diocese of Sacramento and the city of Folsom.

SJNDS Scrip Gift Cards Planning a party for the big game? Consider purchasing a gift card for all your grocery and party needs. Bring cash or your checkbook to
