This is His presence which we feel in the dark times. He also feeds us with more than we could possibly consume. In todays Gospel, we again find the banquet theme. This symbolizes how the Lord Himself will nourish us. Again the message that many are invited to the Lords banquet, to salvation, but many refuse the invite and lose their opportunity to share the heavenly ban- quet. Perhaps weakness or the tendency to choose sin over good, causes them to reject the invite, making them unworthy of attendance. So, the king invites the good and the bad to the meal, and they are expected to make themselves ready (convert their hearts). The guest who is not properly dressed represents those who refuse to change their ways, and by so doing exclude themselves from the banquet. Preparing for the Banquet

The First Reading prophesies a restoration that will br ing bounty to the whole wor ld, the veil of death and the reproach of God’s people will be removed forever. This period of peace and prosperity is likened to a great banquet that the Lord would provide, one of rich food and choice wines, great joy and security; where all would be well on God’s holy mountain. The Responsorial is the famous twenty-third psalm about the Good Shepherd. It is a hymn of trust in the Lord’s goodness, especially during time of trial. It is an image of God as our Good Shepherd, bringing His flock to verdant pastures, leading us to restful waters, guiding us through danger, with His rod and staff which we feel gently prodding us, to comfort and encourage us. This is His presence which we feel in the dark times. He also feeds us with more than we could possibly consume. In fact, we feel so safe that we can eat in the presence of our enemies, for we know we can rely on His protection. His hospitality and protection overflow, they never dry up. In the Second Reading, we again find the total openness of St Paul to God’s will. He displays great equanimity and balance, with no con-cern at all for physical circumstances. Sometimes in his travels of evangelization he was hosted by very wealthy people, other times he was so destitute that he didn’t know where his next meal would come from, serving the Lord was always his main concern. In today’s Gospel, we again find the banquet theme. This symbolizes how the Lord Himself will nourish us. Again the message that many are invited to the Lord’s banquet, to salvation, but many refuse the invite and lose their opportunity to share the heavenly ban-quet. May we be well prepared and ready for the heavenly banquet when the Lord calls us.

Born in Wadowice, Poland, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. His University academic career was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. He

was 19 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, and the regime forced him into manual labor, first as a quarryman and later as a factory worker in a chemical plant. He had to earn his living and avoid being deported to Germany. Refusing to bow to Nazi propaganda he joined a resistance movement trying to save Jews from the Holocaust. Later, he entered an underground seminary, in Kraków. Ordained in 1946, he was sent to Rome where he earned a doctorate in theology. He returned to Poland for a short assignment as assistant pastor and chaplain to university students. He eventually earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland’s University of Lublin. He was allowed by Communist officials to be appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958. In 1964 he was appointed as archbishop of Kraków and three years later, named a cardinal.

On October 16, 1978 he was elected Pope. October 22 his feast day, marks the inauguration of his pontificate in 1978. Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. Living through the Nazi occupation of Poland, the sufferings of his people during World War II and later under Communism left a powerful mark on his later activities and opinions. It was during his papacy we saw the 1989 collapse of the Berlin Wall, the thaw of the Cold War, and the end of Soviet Com-munism and the evil empire. His 1979 visit to Poland encouraged the growth of the Solidarity movement in Poland. Poland’s break from the Soviet empire was the beginning of the end for communism in Eastern Europe. Without a doubt Margaret Thatcher, John Paul and Ronald Reagan were instrumental in the defeat of the greatest enemy to human freedom and dignity which ever existed. With their alliance the Iron Curtain fell, the Berlin Wall collapsed and the Soviet Union cease to exist. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev once said the collapse of the Iron Curtain would have been impossible without John Paul II. Pope John Paul II reached out to other religions, enabling improved relations with the Jewish and Orthodox faiths in particular. He promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives. He organized the first ecumenical prayer gathering with different non-Christian religious leaders for the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi where they prayed at the grave of St. Francis. He promoted Divine Mercy as a hope for humanity. Both in his teaching and personal life, he strove to live and teach the mes-sage of Divine Mercy. He has described Divine Mercy as the answer to the world’s problems and the message of the third mil-lennium. He beatified and canonized Sr. Faustina in Rome and not in Poland to underscore that Divine Mercy is for the whole world. On the same day, he established Divine Mercy Sunday. John Paul II loved the youth of the world. In 1984 at the close of the Holy Year of Redemption, over 300,000 young people from around the world responded to his invitation for an International Jubilee of youth on Palm Sunday in St. Peter’s square. The following Palm Sunday, coinciding with the United Nation’s International Year of the Youth, he took the opportunity to welcome the youth of the world to Rome again. He announced the institution of World Youth Day on December 20, 1985, and the first official WYD was held in 1986. The youth today continue to answer the invitation of the Holy Father in staggering numbers and carry home the message received there to be Christ’s light to the world. He was a great advocate for poor people. In Brussels he would take the bus to some of the most dangerous and poor neighbor-hoods to pray with the citizens. He had the gift of healing when he prayed. These little miracles occurred many times. At his request he asked that these events not be revealed until after his death. There was a Jewish man in New York suffering from can-cer who wished to visit the Pope. He attended Mass and had an audience with John Paul. The man received communion at the disapproval of his secretary (due to the man’s Jewish faith). Three weeks later the man returned cured of his cancer. Pope John Paull II was a great human being with a sense of humor. He used his skills as an actor to interact with the crowd. I met him a couple of times and it was a profound experience where I could truly feel the presence of God in him and around him. He died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84. His cause for canonization commenced one month after his death with the traditional five-year waiting period waived. He was beatified on May 1, 2011 (Divine Mercy Sunday) and canonized April 27, 2014 .

Pastor’s Corner

Last Friday we celebrated the 100th year anniversary of Our Lady’s final apparition in Fatima. There has been question as to what we will do with her statue. Well, we will put her to work along with the first statue. She will also eventually be available for home visitations. Our first statue is very busy and is currently booked through June of next year. I am so pleased that our community wants to continue with Our Lady’s home visitations. I am also happy that there is the deep desire to continue to hold processions throughout the year. We will post information as it becomes available.

Who was Mary on earth? Who is Mary for us now? While Mary sometimes remains the hidden masterpiece of God, her life on earth and her apparitions from heaven are a glimpse into the unfathomable depths of God's love and mercy. Now, more than ever, Mary is vying for our attention, teaching us how to come back to God and how to remain close to Him. How can we connect with our Mother in Heaven, feel her transforming caress, experience her transcendent love? From past apparitions to modern day encounters, you’ll be amazed at what she has done for others and what she can do for you. Never underestimate the prayers of a mother. In this talk by Christine Watkins, MTS, LCSW, she will also share her riveting story of conversion. A popular Catholic author and inspirational speaker, Mrs. Watkins has twenty years of experience as a spiritual director, licensed counselor, and parish mission leader. She has hosted her own shows on Catholic radio and television and been featured on many others.

Roundups An effortless way to support St John the Baptist

Check out this unique way to help our parish. Roundups! Here’s how round ups work - buy a cup of coffee for $2.49, the ‘round up’ to the next dollar ($3.00) is .51 cents. That $.51 is donated to the parish through a company called WeMicroGive. WeMicroGive has put together a web site specifically for our parish. Round ups work with all credit or debit cards with purchases from any merchant. Just desig-nate a credit or debit card for “roundup” transactions, and We Micro Give handles the rest using a secure encrypted system recognized by 9,000 financial institutions. Roundups are calculated daily, added up, then a single donation deliv-ered at the end of the month. You have full control and can track your donations on a donor dashboard, set limits to your monthly contribution, give a fixed amount or stop at any time. (Donation from this program will be used for fa-cilities and school support.)

I joined RCIA as an unbaptized man in my early 30’s. I had a strong feeling that God was calling me, but I didn’t know how to respond. Through private study, I came to believe that there was truth in the Catholic Church, but I had no real understanding of where I stood in my walk with Christ. I had heard some people say that they had a personal relationship with Christ, but I doubted if that was possible for me. My soul was yearning for something, but I couldn’t identify what it was exactly. So, I hesitantly joined RCIA. I was fairly certain that I was not going to enjoy RCIA, and honestly doubted that I could complete the process. I praise God for not giving up on me at that point because I could not have been more wrong. The decision to join RCIA was the most important decision of my life. I first experienced Christ in RCIA in Cynthia and every person on the RCIA staff. Witnessing their love and faith helped me to begin to unlock my own heart. I’m eternally grateful for the RCIA staff and my fellow RCIA classmates that I was fortunate to share this journey with. I thank God for answering my prayers and heal-ing my heart so that I could learn to love Christ through the Catholic faith. The Easter Mass was a powerful spiritual ex-perience. Receiving the sacraments for the first time, espe-cially the Body and Blood of our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, was the moment my soul had yearned for since I was created. Since that moment I’ve had a sense of love and peace in my life that I could never have known existed before I started RCIA. I am aware of God’s love every day, and it has changed my life forever. I know that I am at home where God wants me to be in His Holy Catholic Church - Mike Arview

40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil DID YOU KNOW? There have been 57 MILLION abortions performed in the U.S. since 1973? Only 1% of abortions are done for cases of rape, and less than 1/2 of one percent for in-cest. Abortion was . Wade and Doe vs. Bolton in 1973. Many states restrict abortion AFTER 6 MONTHS but there are still seven states that have NO restriction. Thirty-six couples wait for every one baby who is adopted. These are sad statistics that we cannot ignore.

Upon the loss of a loved one, many of our parish families request a reception immediately following the funeral Mass. This relieves the family of a major burden at a difficult time in their lives.

We are in need of volunteers to help with receptions: Coordinators and workers. We need you to help set up for the reception: from the set up to clean up i.e. table cloths, centerpieces, making coffee, lemonade, minimal dish washing, etc. If you think you would like to learn more about what we do and how you can do your part to “serve comfort”, please call Jennifer Pais at (916) 933-6185. There are also Bereave-ment Hospitality fliers with more details in the vestibule.
