ForewordBy John and Janine Manton

“I am truly honoured to be asked to write this Foreword and to open the 2010 Hampsthwaite Feast.

Having been Team leader for Hampsthwaite in Bloom for several years, I appreciate all the hard work involved, both front and back ‘stage’, in organising such a prestigious event as this.

The Feast and Show is a fun weekend to be enjoyed by all age groups emphasising the wonderful community spirit we have in our lovely village.

Our best wishes to all competitors and hoping the weather is good for the outdoor activities. Good luck to everyone”.

A New Approach With Traditional Values

Kachale ProjectOn behalf of myself and my

team, at W.Bowers, we would

wish to thank the organisers

of The Hampsthwaite Feast for

supporting the Kachale School

Project over the last few years.

We are pleased to have been

associated with the project and

look forward to helping raise

money for this year’s charities.

We are an independent company, proud of our

60 year history and traditional values in

providing respectful care and unlimited attention

to detail at times of need. Mindful of tradition we

are aware of the importance of today in an ever

changing world.

ForewordBy John and Janine Manton

The Feast and HampsthwaiteBy Geoff Howard

Grant of Market and Fairs at Pannal and HampsthwaiteThe King to the Sheriff of York greeting.Whereas we will that a market every week on Tuesday at our hamlet of Panehale which is a member of our manor of Knaresburgh and a fair there every year lasting four days to wit for two days before the feast of St Michael, the feast itself and the morrow of the same. And likewise that a market every week on Friday at our hamlet of Hamesthwayt which is a member of our manor aforesaid and a fair there every year lasting four days to wit for two days before the feast of the Translation of St Thomas the Martyr on the feast itself and the morrow of the same shall be held. We charge you that such markets and fairs in your full county you cause publicly to be proclaimed and firmly held.

Witness the King at Lincoln xxvii. Day of December.Translation of original grant found amongst the Close Rolls of 33rd Edward 1. (1304)

Once again, we wait patiently for the promised BBQ Summer but I am confident that you will see from the brochure there is much for all the family to enjoy, regardless of the weather - within reason of course! Our recent Birstwith to Hampsthwaite Duck Race, a joint venture between Birstwith Show and our own Feast, was blessed with sunshine throughout. This proved to be a truly great village occasion and we wish to thank all who helped to make it so - fingers are now firmly crossed for similar weather in July!

It has been a good year for local groups and societies. The Duck Race was able to help them raise funds and Hampsthwaite has been very successful in attracting support from the Knabs Ridge Community Fund. The Feast gratefully acknowledges the opportunity this fund provided to buy portable staging for the Fancy Dress and other events.

We are also pleased to announce that the Land Registry has agreed the football field be renamed as ‘Feast Field’. Village historians will note that the land on which the Memorial Hall is built was once known by this name and so an important aspect of our village history is now recognised once more.

Back to the present, we extend a warm welcome to you, your friends and your families, to join with us and enjoy the Feast once more in July.
