When we spoke to Cosmic, he’d recently finished painting Bored Skate Shop (St Austell) and had done a great job too! While he was tight-lipped about the projects he’s currently working on, he did tell us he’s excited about the new “Drawing on Things LIVE!” events he has planned. Interested? Pop punk heroes Blink-182 have been confirmed to headline an Eden Session on Sunday July 8.The Californian three-piece come to Eden following the release of their acclaimed sixth studio album Neighborhoods last September, their first record since the band split in 2005. Blink-182, otherwise known as Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker, are probably best known for 1999’s seminal Enema of the State, which went on to sell 15m copies and spawned perhaps the band’s most well-known singles All the Small Things, What’s My Age Again and Adam’s Song. They have sold more than 27 million albums in total and has won multiple awards, including Best New Act at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Rock Act at the same ceremony in 2001. Back in December last year, The Eden Project announced urban superstar, Plan B, would be headlining a Session on Friday July 6 this year. Both are set to be absolutely brilliant sets, in front of the Eden Project’s world-famous Biomes. Tickets to both Sessions cost £35 plus £5 booking fee each. THESE REIGNING DAYSInterview by Rachael D’Cruze

Page 7: 247 Magazine - Feb issue, South West edition

There aren’t many bands that start their gigging career by supporting the mighty, Mercury Nominated Metronomy, or the legendary John Otway. These Reigning Days have done both, as well as headlining Combefest – but then this isn’t just any band. These boys have an instant pedigree thanks to frontman Dan Steer’s success as lead singer of The Quails – a Devon band who enjoyed national success and played numerous festivals including Glastonbury and the BBC Radio 1 stage at Latitude and also supported Muse, The Kooks, Newton Faulkner and Motörhead.

Of course, while a pedigree of past success helps, it will only propel a band so far. “I think the tunes themselves have done a lot of the talking, which is nice and as a result we supported Metronomy when they played in Torquay, and since then we have played a load of wicked shows across the country and done an alpine tour of France,” says Dan. Indeed These Reigning Days have a sound that manages to be their own but also of the moment too – Dan’s voice is distinctive and addictive.

We asked Dan to describe These Reigning Days’ sound: “I don’t want to compare our sound as such, but there are glimpses of the tight three-piece sound of muse, woven together with the warm synths of The Killers with a sugar top coating of vocals and harmonies and depth of Floyd and Coldplay.” Yep, that pretty much sums them up – Coldplay for the cool kids. “I personally have done a lot of growing up, and learnt a lot over the whole experience that I can apply to my new band. I feel These Reigning Days is more real, more genuine, and more grown up in the sense that I’m not writing to ‘be someone’ in particular. What ever comes out, comes out – I like the freedom,” says Dan when asked about how he has moved on since The Quails split. It’s true that These Reigning Days come across as a slightly darker, more mature offering, as their first single, Changes, is set to prove when it’s released later this month.

“I think it’s a good song to introduce to the public and music critics. Its quite an epic song but still maintains subtlety and discipline. I guess it’s got quite a dark groove to it but still has a quirky electronic charm to it. I’m proud of it, and hopefully it’s a good starting block, for things to come,” says an upbeat Dan, who formed the band in September last year. “Having all been in bands before and known of each other, it all seemed to just fall into place,” he continues.

Following the release of their single, Changes, These Reigning Days are touring the UK. “As summer approaches we’ll be going festival mad, planning to play every festival under the sun, however big or small. It’s my favorite time of year.” Dan continues to say he’s both lucky and proud to be in a kick ass band that knows how to write a big festival tune and get people going but that he isn’t about to get preachy and start saying that they’re out to change the music industry for ever.

So, what is on These Reigning Days agenda, if changing the face of music is off? “Major radio air play, selling a few records, playing some unforgettable gigs, meeting some amazing people, and having a great time doing it!” Sounds like it couldn’t get much better to us.

SERIAL KILLAZIs this the first time you’ve played Plymouth and what should we expect from a Serial Killaz dj set?We did play Plymouth a couple of years ago and had an amazing time, we love the Plymouth raving massive! But as always you will be treated to the very best in Ragga Jungle goodness, lots of specials and dubplates, with a bit of Drum & Bass thrown in for good measure.

You’ve had a pretty impressive year, pretty much killing all things reggae and drum n bass, what’s been your personal highlight?Zane Lowe making ‘Send Dem’ his ‘Next Hype’ track on Radio 1, he then went on to play it every day for a week. And headlining Boomtown Festival in August was immense!

Name your three favourite record labels.Currently Digital Sound Boy, Playaz and MTA - but it changes regularly. We watch artists and individual tracks rather than labels. You’ve been doing big things with the UK legend Rebel MC under his Congo Natty name, that’s such a good look, who else would you like to collaborate with and why?Too many people, but we really want to work with some big vocalists this year. Ms Dynamite has been at the top of our list for a while now. A colab with Toddla T would be nice, as we both utilise that same Reggae influence and we would love to work with Diplo & Switch (Major Lazer) cos, for us, they are easily the most exciting producers in music right now.

Reggae music and dance music in the UK has always had a strong relationship, why do you think it works so well together?Reggae is such a universal sound, it’s a cliché but everyone likes a bit of Reggae don’t they? It’s so un-abusive, that it’s hard not to like and people, especially in the Dance music scene, can relate to the bass line. Reggae is still one of the most dominant forces in music and has been for around 50 years now. It doesn’t matter what country you go to, every country seems to have a massive Reggae scene, which Is great for us.

If you had to describe your sound to my Nan, how would you convince her to come along to hear you dj?

“You know that nice Tony Blackburn chap? Well we are like him but with more gunshots and rewinds....”

Who were your biggest influences growing up?My mum, who taught me to value music from a very early age. She teaches music and still plays in various bands, but more importantly she is a very enthusiastic record collector: her collection is getting as big as mine. Because of her I was regularly buying records from the age of four years old, which seems insane now! Also as you get older it’s hard to ignore just what an Influence Quincy Jones is - to any music lover. As we are both producers it’s almost mind blowing to think just how much this one guy has achieved. From Stevie, to Sinatra, to Micheal Jackson - the man has done it all.

If Justin Bieber asked you to remix one of his tracks, would you?Definitely, we would stick him in auto tune and ragga him up to bloodclart!

Doneao recently gave away his album for free, I was shocked, it made me think if a UK don like him doesn’t sell units what chance do I have? What are your thoughts?More and more artists are doing this as they realise that it is the best way to get your music out to the widest audience possible. The bulk of an artist’s money will come from live shows, and the best way to get people to come and see you perform is to make sure they have heard your music in the first place. Reggae artists have been putting up their music for free for years now - they know that if they have a big hit in the clubs, then it will ram their shows and they have more chance of being signed by a major.Anyway, paying for music is a relatively recent phenomenon, before records it was mostly all free.

See the Serial Killaz on February 24 at Thirst, Plymouth. Check them out at www.myspace.com/serialkillazdnb.

SERIAL KILLAZ

Chinese Sky Candy is a very, very subtle Simpson’s reference, explains Dave, ‘when we name stuff, quite a lot of it is based on our sense of humour, which might not be evident in our style of music’. Barely a year since forming in January 2011, a quick friendship that started at University developed into a musical relationship to the point where they can finish each other’s sentences. This obviously helps the writing process, ‘it’s very much a collective thing’ says Chris, ‘we come in with a basic idea and bounce it around’ adds Dave, ‘all our songs are written when we’re together in a practice room’, continues Rob, ‘it’s very organic’. I think you get the idea.

To record and mix and produce Schadenfreude took the band just three and a half weeks, doing everything themselves. ‘It’s something we’re still getting to grips with. We’re having a lot of fun producing it, but it’s still a massive learning curve that we’re on’ explains Dave, ‘hopefully every time we record it’s going to be not only more interesting in the production but it’s going to sound better. Because we haven’t decided to say ‘this is our sound’, ‘this is what we’re gonna do’, every time we write we can say we’re going to do something completely different. We made it very clear from the beginning that we actively want to make sure that we’re not just doing the same thing over and over’.

When they first started doing their live set Rob described it to a friend ‘I asked them if they’d heard the studio recordings, and then I said ‘well it’s like that, but worse’. Now, the last few times we’ve done gigs, they’ve gone down really well. But I want it to get to the point where people come and just really want to talk about it afterwards’.

The boys have named The Underground in Falmouth as a top venue for them, Chris describes how ‘it’s a very enclosed space and the dense sound that comes out of it really suits our music’. The band are

also very keen to urge other musicians to make use of the space at the Woodlane Bar, which is also the backdrop to their video ‘Tiger Blood Vaccine’.

If you haven’t heard of Chinese Sky Candy, any research on the band is likely to leave you just as clueless as you started. Rob explains that this is very much a conscious decision, ‘giving people too much information now is the obvious thing to do because it’s so easy. And it’s easy to maybe think that people care what you might be doing at a given time because you’re in a band. And so therefore [we try] to be aware of that enough to then not tell people what we’ve had for tea’.

You can, however, download both of their EPs online, for as much or as little money as you like. ‘Having to price your own music is a very difficult thing because you know how much effort you’ve put into it’ says Dave. ‘It’s worth different things to different people, someone might listen to it two times some people might listen to it a lot more, so a universal price for a CD seems like the strangest thing’ explains Rob, ‘money’s a very dirty subject when it comes to art’.

In 2012 Chinese Sky Candy are hoping to take their music to the masses, beginning with a South West tour. More writing, more recording, shooting a video and maybe even the release of a cassette tape with remixes of their material on the B-side. They definitely won’t be on Twitter anytime soon.

‘Schadenfreude’ and ‘Dead Animals Everywhere’ are available at http://chineseskycandy.bandcamp.com, Watch Chinese Sky Candy at www.youtube.com/user/ashleyhampson111 and can read our review of their EP on www.247magazine.co.uk

“We’ve always known that the dreaded second album is the tough one and that definitely was the case,” admits Ben. “We really only had six or seven weeks to write the album and, in the first month, we pretty much wrote nothing. We had real writer’s block.” Fortunately, after an initial slow start, the five friends eventually had their eureka moment. “It’s very easy to start doubting yourself and thinking: ‘Maybe the first album was a fluke.’ But then we wrote a song pretty much out of nothing, which turned out to be one of the best songs we’ve probably ever written. From there, everything started flowing.”

With 12 new songs written, Young Guns finally had enough material under their belt for a new album and it was time to head back into the studio with Dan Weller, who had also worked with the band on their 2010 debut. Ben describes how, at this point, the producer had offered them a choice: “Dan gave us the option of doing it in either East London or Thailand.” No prizes for guessing which location they settled on. As it turned out, the exotic setting also helped the band escape the strains of recording. “Doing albums is always a stressful experience - it’s not as fun as people make out. Going out to Thailand was such a relaxing time. If you were feeling a bit stressed, you could go and have a swim in the pool or play some table tennis or something.”

In the three years prior to their trip to Thailand and the impending release of ‘Bones’, things seem to have moved astonishingly quickly for Young Guns. The past 18 months have also seen the band score

a Top 10 album in the UK Rock Chart, perform on the Main Stage at the Reading and Leeds festivals and support Bon Jovi at the O2 Arena in London. Ben describes how this compares to just a few years ago: “We all started out playing in different bands at a little strip club called The White Horse in Wycombe. It was a bit of a shit hole, but that was where we all used to play every weekend. Gradually, we all joined the same band and it was go from there. We quit our jobs and spent two-and-a-half years completely poor, living on bread and water and playing gigs to no one. Slowly, it started to pay off.”

As the band embark on their latest string of dates, the Bare Bones Club Tour, Ben explains how the idea was to revisit some of their earliest experiences as a band: “We obviously love playing big shows, but we’ve always said that if we get to the stage where people start coming to see us, we’d love to go back and do a small club tour where the shows are rammed, sweaty and hectic. They’re always the ones that everyone remembers.”

Young Guns are: Gustav Wood - Vocals // John Taylor - Guitar // Fraser Taylor - Guitar // Simon Mitchell - Bass // Ben Jolliffe – Drums

See Young Guns at Saltash Livewire on Tuesday February 14 and at Plymouth Pavilions with Enter Shikari on Thursday March 22.

Although it’s been little more than a mere 18 months since Young Guns released their impressive debut album ‘All Our Kings Are Dead’, the Wycombe-based rockers are already getting set to launch its successor ‘Bones’. As the band prepare to bring their tour to the South West, drummer Ben Jolliffe tells 247’s Rob Sleigh whether there is any truth in the “difficult second album” myth…

action sports

For those who don’t know, can you explain what freestyle flatlanding is all about and how is differs from conventional BMX riding?Flatland BMX is a unique and stylish form of BMX riding. It is performed on a flat surface and is a combination physical spins, balances and tricks. The technical moves are linked with a series of positions were the rider travels around the space and the bike itself. Flatland can be performed anywhere that has a hard flat surface, for example tennis courts, sports halls, a stage or a paved area. No ramps or obstacles are needed to perform tricks. It has been described as a fusion of BMX riding and Breakdancing’. How big is the scene in the UK, and more specifically the South West? The Flatland scene in the UK is pretty small. There are few riders spread out across the country, but there’s no real ‘hive’ or ‘hub’ for the activity - which in a way is great as it allows anyone who wants to get involved to do so as you don’t have to be in any one area. The South West has a small community of riders, but there are some great riders here, a lot of inspiration and some awesome spots to ride. Last year I started the UK Flatland Championships to bring UK based riders together to share techniques and ride together for the day. It was a great day and I really look forward to running and hosting it again later in 2012. It’s not something you see in abundance - is it still underground? You are currently going all out promoting the sport right round the UK, right? Flatland is still considered as quite an underground sport. That said, you’ll see it on commercials and in 2011 flatlanding featured on a Channel 4 TV programme.

Yeah, I’m currently promoting the sport in and around the UK and have become well known and respected in the BMX flatland community and the commercial sector too. I strive in building awareness of the sport and its growing popularity throughout the UK, which allows me to demonstrate my passion and inspire people of all ages to pick up a BMX. Flatland has given me freedom of expression; it is as much of an art form as it is a sport and has became an important part of my life.

How did you get into Flatland BMX?I started riding seven years ago after coming across a video called ‘Flatland Manifesto’, which my cousin bought from a BMX magazine. I learnt the basic tricks that worked up to harder moves, all of which kept me motivated. Since then I have come up with different variations and a couple of my own moves. What impact has the sport had on your life and what pushes you to keep going? I’ve gone from being a labourer to a full time BMX athlete. It’s given me the freedom to travel and visit new and exciting places. Through this I get to meet others who share a similar passion either in Flatland or in their own art forms. I have really enjoyed working with large clothing and entertainment companies along the way, as I’ve been able to show the public more Flatland. I like to think that by performing and telling my story I inspire young people to do anything they like as long as they stay positive and work hard at. It looks pretty technical and quite artistic. Is it, or are we just romaticising it?Erm…Yep, it’s quite artistic - a bit like contemporary dance with a BMX bike acting as a partner, so to speak. A lot of dance companies have added Flatland BMX to choreographed shows that involves dancers - I’ve toured twice with an Interdisciplinary Dance company, Kompany Malakhi on a production called Rotations, during which I performed with another rider and two dancers. I like to keep my options open to try different things and see if it works, stepping out of my comfort zone. What would you say to readers who fancy giving it a go?Head down to your nearest bike shop in South West and get yourself a BMX - I first got a job in a hotel kitchen cleaning dishes to buy my first BMX. Stay positive and if you fall off get back up and try it again, anything is possible if you stay focused and push yourself at your own level.

Food

FALMOuTH 8 Bar & Kitchen8-10 Webber St, Falmouth / 01326 318011 / www.eight-bar.co.uk Cutting down food miles at every turn, 8 Bar & Kitchen have filled their menu with local produce. They use a local butcher, the local greengrocer and even season their food with Cornish Sea Salt, to ensure everything coming out of the kitchen is top quality, fresh, seasonal food made in house. Dishes start from as little as £4, with specials changing daily. We shared two little dishes to start, Chorizo and Squid, and a Winter Salad with pear, walnuts, blue cheese and mixed leaves - full of different flavours and textures. To follow I went for the Pork Belly Ribs, in a delicious homemade BBQ glaze, with wonderfully salty home made fries and ‘no-mayo’ slaw. Desserts are lovingly put together: the lemon posset with Cornish clotted cream and shortbread slices was sweet, yet tart, and light. The chocolate brownie is to die for, warmed, served with Cornish clotted cream and hints of coffee in a chocolate sauce. It was the little touches that made this dining experience worthwhile, be it bespoke cocktails, or the savoury popcorn tease while you study the menu. Service was first rate, personal and friendly. It’s not at all pretentious, just good food in a relaxed, homely environment where you are guaranteed to leave with a full tummy and a smile on your face.Hannah Giles

ExETEr FAT PIG2 John Street Exeter EX1 1BL / 01392 437217 / www.fatpig-exeter.co.ukThe Fat Pig has a modern, smart and stylish interior, in the style of the traditional English pub. This busy and lively pub is just behind Fore Street, and is closely related to Exeter’s Rusty Bike, in that they’re run by the same people. It also takes the freshly sourced food theme to a whole new level, because the owner breeds pigs, and he has a good relationship with local fishermen and game-keepers. So freshness and localness are both definitely high on the agenda. For starters, olives and bread are a good road to go down: they’re wonderfully presented, the olives are of the highest quality, and they come with fresh bread and a tasty oil and vinegar dip. Bangers & mash with a real differ-ence came next. The sausages are uniquely prepared in-house, by the pub’s chefs. Again, the freshness really shows. They come served with a superb creamy mash, caramelised shal-lots and a tasty gravy, with black pudding and buttered broccoli, cooked in an al dente style. Portions are generous and the food is extremely good value for money. If you’re vegetarian, the butternut squash pangrattato is well worth a try. It has a similar quality to a fritter, and is made with rosemary and orange, decorated with a green salad and shaved parmesan. Arash Torabi

PLyMOuTH river Cottage Canteen and Deli Royal William Yard, Plym-outh, PL1 3QQ / 01752 252702 / www.rivercottage.netHugh Fearnley-whittingstall and co. have just opened a River Cottage Canteen and Deli at Plymouth’s stunning water-side Royal William Yard. It’s housed in a fantastic ex-Naval heritage building, which won’t fail to impress. The interior of the restaurant is stylish and earthy with original floors, exposed stonework, huge wooden tables and an open kitchen. Seasonal and local produce is at the heart of River Cottage cooking and that was evident from looking at the mouthwatering menu and specials board, while enjoying some homemade bread. Thanks to the attentive and knowledgeable staff, I opted for the generous portion of muscles with bacon and leeks, to start, which were cooked perfectly an in an exceptionally tasty stock. My friend went for the cold beef, preserved pear, blue cheese and rocket salad, which looked like a work of art and tasted like heaven – with all the different flavours complimenting each other perfectly. For our main course we enjoyed the slow roast pork with roast potatoes, on a bed of red cabbage – supremely tasty, tender and moreish. Even though full we shared a vanilla yogurt panna cotta with spiced dried apricots and shortbread which although creamy and indulgent had a light finish – the perfect end to a great locally sourced meal. TrurO Bambu Café4/5 Pydar Mews, Truro, Tr1 2ux / 01872 260144Amongst the selection of specialist retailers that can be found along Truro’s Pydar Mews nestles Bambu Café. All customers are welcomed by the staff and invited to sit and wait for what is efficient and friendly table service. In essence the menu offers what you might expect from many daytime cafes, but there’s no denying the quality of produce you’ll find being served at Bambu. The menu is packed with a variety of breakfasts, brunches, lunches and snacks – it’s almost a challenge to find something on the menu that doesn’t shout local. From Roskillys ice cream, Davidstow cheddar and cream teas using jam from Boddingtons of Mevagissey, there is even a specials board that changes depending on what can be sourced in season.Bambu feels relaxed and unpretentious and the commitment to using local produce wherever possible really shines through in the food on your plate - which comes at a reasonable price. The All Day Breakfast was a good size and it wasn’t a problem to swap the eggs for extra mushrooms and a slice of what I’m assured was delicious Trevarthen’s bacon. I opted for my ultimate favourite – Eggs Benedict. The combina-tion of two poached Cornish free range eggs and home cooked Trevarthen ham was an awesome way to start the week! Ellie Williams

Attack! Vipers!Deadweight Revival(Specialist Subject)

Portsmouth has a much-respected underground punk rock community so it comes as no surprise that homeboys, Attack! Vipers!, have turned in an album of manifold strengths. Seething with dark fury, post-rock moodiness and all-round sonic cohesion, the quartet pay homage to everyone from Envy to The Hope Conspiracy with a neat sideline in piercing rock’n’roll riffola. When A!V! slip into new territory, the results are equally as effective. ‘Out In The Dark’ builds from one of their typical guitar motifs but is imbued with El Morgan’s spoken-word timbre, lending the song an air of dystopian drama. It’s brilliant. If hardcore noise suffused with morose reflection hits your G-spot, ‘Deadweight Revival’ will gladly oblige.

First Aid KitThe Lion’s Roar (Wichita)

Hands up who didn’t think ‘The Big Black & The Blue’ was one of the best albums of 2009? You fucking knobs. Well the Swedish Söderberg sisters have made good on album number two, spreading their tentacles into sonic domains that accentuate their nature-blessed talents. ‘Emmylou’ is a beautiful ode to the legends of country music wrapped inside a love song, while the title track pulsates with a hypnotic allure that exemplifies their sweet’n’sour ethos and gorgeous vocal harmonies. Recorded in the US and rounded out by musicians including members of Bright Eyes (along with daddy Söderberg on bass), ‘The Lion’s Roar’ is a slice of Americana-via-Scandinavia that you’d be foolish to ignore.

Pulled Apart By HorsesTough Love (Transgressive)

The first thing that hits you is just how refined noise-rock trio, PABH, have become since their gloriously cacophonous inception, but I guess it didn’t do Biffy Clyro any harm. With the kind of confidence that only comes from ceaseless touring, ‘Tough Love’ blasts off the starting blocks firing sinister riffs and larynx-lacerating howls in all directions, drawing on old and new touchstones in equal measure. ‘Epic Myth’ is a guttural Nirvana stomp, ‘Shake Off The Curse’ loiters menacingly between RFTC and FOTL, ‘Give Me A Reason’ recalls Biffy at their wildest, while the brilliant ‘Night Of The Living’ could almost be Perry Farrell fronting a San Diego post-hardcore band. Derivative? Sometimes. Thrilling? Always.

The Twilight SadNo-One Can Ever Know (Fat-Cat)

It’s easy to imagine the perfectly monikered Scotsmen living in a constant state of unspoken existential turmoil, longing for the moonlight yet mourning the loss of warmth. Don’t we all? On their sophomore release the band have eschewed the wall-of-noise approach for something equally as disconcerting – drawing on their love of krautrock innovators Can alongside the para-punk musings of Joy Division and Cabaret Voltaire. ‘Dead City’ and ‘Don’t Move’ are songs that would lurk in the shadows of cheap industro-goth nightclubs were it not for James Graham’s earthly, if lyrically sullen, croon; while the analogue synths and manipulated drums add to the distinctly ‘80s miserablism.

Screaming SoulGhost Inna Dub(Emerging Species)

The dub version of Screaming Soul’s debut album, Ghost Inna Shell, sees a complete re-lick, mainly from Nick “Prince Fatty” Coplowe of Mutant Hi-Fi, plus a couple of versions from the lord of the mixing desk himself, Adrian Sherwood. Darkly digital and bass-heavy is the general vibe, with MC vocals here and there, powered by a strong dub-reggae undercurrent. Sherwood’s dubs are done live, in the same way he transformed Primal Scream’s Vanishing Point into the classic Echo Dek, in the ’90s. Prince Fatty has reworked the songs radically, using analogue technology. It works as an album in its own right, even if you haven’t heard he original. And it’ll give your speakers a good old battering, for good measure.

The LemonheadsLaughing All the Way to the Cleaners: the Best Of(Rhino)

Career-spanning 47 song collection on two discs, marking 25 years of Evan Dando and his ever-changing line-up of co-stars. Earlier songs like Shame About Ray and Into Your Arms have stood the test of time, so judge them not for their annoying covers, like Mrs Robinson, or Step By Step by New Kids on the Block! The Gram Parsons cover, Brass Buttons makes a lot more sense. This set shows what The Lemonheads always did best, which is utilising their punk rock, country and pop influences, to deliver melody-driven songs time after time. Dando has been at it again recently, touring the band’s ‘92 album, It’s A Shame About Ray.

DJ FoodThe Search Engine(Ninja Tune)

DJ Food was once a DJ/production team, spearheaded by the Ninja bosses, Coldcut, but now it’s solely the project of one of its longstanding members, Strictly Kev. The other surviving factor is a real sense of adventure in the exploration of sound, which is displayed here. An eclectic approach has always been the way with DJ Food, The The’s Matt Johnson guests on the electro-funk Giant. His collaboration with JG Thirlwell of Foetus is dark and satanic, with heavy and busy drums, over which noise and confusion do the business. There are also reminders here of the classic Ninja/Food days, with quirky samples and crazy drum patterns.

LALLAL(Public Transit Recordings)

LAL are a female-fronted electronic trio from Canada, whose first two politically-charged albums Corners (2002) and Warm Belly, Higher Power (2004) won them critical acclaim. Their sound fits somewhere between Feist, Bjork and Massive Attack, and on this, their fourth album, they take their quirky sounds further, with deep lyrics and slightly offbeat productions. There’s all kinds of influences fused together, but they never lean never too much on one thing for long enough as an obvious point of reference. It’s worth checking out Look Behind, which makes the most immediate impact, of all the songs on the album. Rosina Kazi has a warm and soulful voice, which sounds out because she doesn’t sing obviously “soulful” kind of lyrics.

Darren HaymanJanuary Songs(Belka via Cargo)

It’s no mean feat to write a tune a day for a whole month; and it’s even more of a task to make sure they don’t all sound completely shit but if anyone can manage it, former Hefner frontman Darren Hayman can. The perpetual underdog takes us on a journey through his brilliant twee mind – with songs about day trips to the Isle of Eigg, lust-fuelled nights in and boredom in suburbia. His signature fragile, quivering vocals are there as is the upbeat tempo, but for the most part it is the slower numbers, such as I Know I Fucked Up, which really hit the spot. If you’re quick you can grab a limited edition hard copy with hand drawn sleeve notes from the man himself!

Francois and the Atlas MountainsE Volo Love (Domino)

France is so much sexier than the UK and it follows that the music which comes out of it (or anywhere French speaking) has that certain je n’sais quoi. Think Serge Gainsbourg and daughter Charlotte, think Leonard Cohen and er, Vanessa Paradis. Anyway, the point is that an album called E Volo Love by a band called Francois and the Atlas Mountains has all the ingredients of something adorable and the dreamy musical cake they manage to make is nothing short of moreish. From the opener Les Plus Beaux through their best song Buried Treasures to the popular Piscine, a European Belle & Sebastian style twee accompanies a sweet yet sexy vocal. Lush.

CasiokidsAabenbaringen Over Aaskammen(Moshi Moshi)

Europe is on fire this month with Francois flying the flag for France and now Casiokids showcasing the Scandinavian arm of the industry with this, their second album. The title has something to do with mountains and many of the songs are in another language but it doesn’t matter cos it’s the catchy indie-pop beat which carries this record. Think a slightly camper Los Campesinos! Or maybe a modern day Ah-Ha, which makes sense when you think their Norwegian predecessors helped fund their rise to semi-fame. With several tracks destined to be dancefloor fillers we’ll be hearing a lot more from these guys in 2012.

Smashing PumpkinsGish / Siamese Dream (reissues)(EMI)

I’m a big fan of all these reissues. Everyone’s at it, from REM and Radiohead to Nick Cave and Roy Harper; and now Billy Corgan and co. What they do is make you revisit albums which may have been gathering dust on the shelf for years or been tucked away in your iTunes as a shuffled mess. These reissues make you fall in love with tangible albums all over again, from the artwork and sleeve notes to the well-thought out order of the songs, you just can’t beat it.

Nneka Soul Is Heavy(Decon)

If I’m still DJing at DJ Derek’s age, I can pretty much guarantee I shall still be playing Nneka’s “Heartbeat”. Her first album, which I reviewed here, got a massive thumbs up and this here follows suit. She hasn’t quite blown up like she deserves but maybe this is the album to change that. Her approach hasn’t changed too much, still very soulful, still very much like Lauryn Hill, but this time with a few more collaborations, such as Ms Dynamite and Black Thought; if anything, this feels like a positive step forward. Essential new music.

Naughty by Nature Anthem Inc(Entertainment One Records)

There was a time when these guys were killing the hip hop scene, despite being from New Jersey (who knew?). Still, those days are long gone…can they still cut it? Hhmmmm?! There’s no denying that Treach still has his flow, the tracks are well produced and they still retain their ear for a crossover production. But what has changed is the sound of today’s urban market. Put these tracks next to drizzy, yeezy etc and this sounds very different. Saying that, the inclusion of their biggest hits to date make this a good buy, so if you want to relive your youth or update you collection this is a worthy addiction.

Various ArtistsThis is UK Grime Vol.2(Defenders Ent Ltd)

Volume 1 of this series was a real highlight to me for a time, an amazing collection covering so many different styles of grime from the poppy crossover right through to the heavy spitting bars over minimal beats; and it did pretty much cover most of the well known grime tracks - so much so that I couldn’t think of many bangers that a second comp would so closely follow it. Saying that, Lethal’s “Pow 2011”, Kano’s “P’s and Q’s” and Fire Camp’s “Move” are hardly rare B sides. Even to an old dodderer like me, the energy and flows on this make it necessary for someone with a passing interest or someone who knows their grime.

GangreneVodka & Ayahuasca (Decon Records)

Back in the day I use to work in a record shop. I remember the fun we had when Jamiroquai came out - hearing people trying to pronounce it and I so wanna hear how people are gonna ask for this one. The second collaboration between Alchemist and Oh No and this one follows a similar path, heavy beats that are on the underground tip and Oh No with his usual flow. Sometimes when you have a stellar collaboration it can show up your steez, but on this both Kool G Rap and Prodigy from Mobb Deep do their thing and it fits really well, not showing up Oh No but complimenting him well. A quality album but definite

Johann Stone Hobo Disco (Detox)

After giving the world Bjork and Gus Gus (as well as renowned techno label Thule Records) which is surprising considering its’ remote location, Iceland has provided some excellent musical visionaries over the years. One such artist (and definitely someone to look out for in 2012), is Johann Stone. Having only just left his teens, he has released many a genre defying production, which DJs are starting to take note of. Taking influence from techno, trance and electro, the humorously titled ‘Hobo Disco’, has a shuffly bassline, intense percussion and main riff akin to some of Sander Van Doorn’s better works. This is definitely one record more suited to the festivals, but also works in clubs.

3PhazegeneratorLooter(Filth Infatuated)

Bridgewater’s Filth Infatuated collective are some serious techno enthusiasts, running very successful nights and releasing on high profile labels, with a refreshing attitude of being driven by a love of music and not money (evident by their many free party gigs). Happily, they’ve taken the logical decision to set up a record label, and release number two from London’s 3phazegenerator (equally as Prevalent in the free party scene), is some important business! Inspired by the recent London riots, this relentless, heads down number is one that is well suited to start a set off. Mix of choice is the tribalistic effort from label owners Kev D + Mark Neenan under their ‘Naked Van Mirk’ pseudonym.

KloneZ vs BushoWreak Havoc (Thilo + Evanti Mix)(Digitally Infected)

Having reviewed the original of this a few months back and playing it consistently throughout 2011, this reviewer’s impression of ‘Wreak Havoc’ from the now Bristol based Busho, and Canada’s KloneZ was that it couldn’t be improved upon. However, Holland’s Thilo + Evanti take everything that’s loveable from the original and add their own, slightly harder, quirkier and intricate groove to things, and the end result is a smasher that stands out as one of the more distinct and memorable tracks of a set. This rocked the place at Atmosphere at The Grove on New Years Eve, and also received another road testing from yours truly in Holland this weekend, to a very positive response.

Franky Jones + G ForceAcid Attack(Braincrushed)

From his earliest releases on the Bonzai imprint, Franky Jones has set the mould for many fans of the harder scene to follow. He gave us the legendary ‘First Rebirth by ‘Jones + Stephenson’ which, although being nearly twenty years old, is still played at many festivals and other raves to date. This retro sounding charmer was a chance find from the unfortunately soon to be closed Bigga Records and with ‘Acid Attack’ we are treated to three tracks of sheer brutality. A lovely distorted 909 kick drum underpins layer upon layer of twisted acidic madness, and despite being rather pacey, certainly works wonders for contorting some heads in those rather sinister early morning sets.

Backbone

Moriatywww.myspace.com/moriatysounds

A handful of default bands always spring to mind when a drum’n’guitar duo looms into view but Moriaty aren’t here to pander to such stereotyping. On the ‘Lord Blackwood’ EP the sharp-suited twosome are clearly having fun, devoid of an agenda and pure of purpose. The title track is a ‘90s psyche-rock wigout; ‘No Shoes On’ is a modern reading of The Faces; while ‘Caddyshack’ is the only song that strays close to Jack White territory, but it does so with cocksure intent and octave pedals a-blazing. However, it’s ‘One For The Mothers’ where the band truly excels: a shuffling folk-pop ditty with poignant fiddles and a truly heart-swelling chorus. Moriaty 1, Stereotypes 0. Bravo!

Rusty Shacklewww.rustyshackle.com

lot of people come barging in with half-baked jigs’n’reels and happy-clappy cliches and tear the heart out of it. They did the same to ska. You just can’t trust the kids with anything. Thankfully, South Wales ensemble, Rusty Shackle, are blessed with great songwriting chops, which makes their album, ‘Wash Away These Nights’, a genuinely worthy proposition. Like The Coral (with whom they also share vocal similarities), RS create evergreen melodies via traditional mores,s taking in skiffle and indie-rock, resulting in classy and clever songs like ‘Cold-Hearted Town’; songs that retain the joys of fiddles and acoustic strums without resorting to lazy pastiche. Solid.

Matthew & Mewww.facebook.com/matthewandmemusic

Ahead of their imminent debut album, Totnes indie-pop soft-hearts, Matthew & Me, have released an EP of delicate voices and twinklesome guitar/piano arpeggios for you to fawn over, if you’re given to such whimsical emissions. Like Noah & The Whale with less testosterone, the band certainly know their way around gently flickering melancholy – ‘Sinners’ and ‘Past’ doing their level best to out-sob each other. During ‘Old Flame Alight’ the band threatens to go the grandiose way of Arcade Fire only to turn from the light and retreat to their safe sensibilities. I’m keen to hear what happens when they navigate that corner. Until then, these fine-tuned modern ballads will do. Potential sure abounds.

The True Bluewww.the-true-blue.com

When a band talks of its small town roots and breath-of-fresh-air credentials it usually means that either their dad wrote the press release or they play it safer than hibernating sun turtles. Sometimes both. The True Blue fall into the latter category with big grey bells on. Their debut album, ‘Oh The Horror!’, is a persistently mediocre exercise in acoustically-driven pop that fails to invite any emotional commitment. Indeed, it wouldn’t be so bad if it was detestable. During ‘A Plague On Both Your Houses’ you begin to wonder what this band would’ve sounded like had they opted for the ‘insipid electro-pop’ of their glamour-seeking peers instead of bemoaning ‘the futility of seaside town existence’. One can but dream.

3 Feb – 17 Mar DAVID BLANDY: PASSAGE OF THE SOULExeter Phoenix, Bradninch Place, Exeter, 01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.uk 10am - 5pm, FreeDavid Blandy’s work deals with his problematic relationship with popular culture, highlighting the slippage and tension between fantasy and reality in everyday life. Searching for his cultural position in the world, Blandy often uses humour to ask the difficult question of just how much the self is formed by the mass-media of records, films and television, and whether he has an identity outside that.

8 - 11 February GOING DARKDrum Theatre, Royal Parade, 01752 267222, theatreroyal.com, 7.45pm, £13Sound&Fury use their innovative theatre vocabulary of immersive surround sound design, total darkness and imaginative lighting in Going Dark to reawaken our wonder at the cosmos and reveal how one man’s vision becomes illuminated by darkness.

What perspectives can art offer on this terra incognita, a forbidding environment where the temperature rarely rises above freezing, yet one which for scientists offers a wealth of geological and glacial data including indicators of climate change.

12 February RICHARD HERRING – WHAT IS LOVE, ANYWAY?Exeter Northcott, Stocker Road, Exeter, 01392 493493, exeternorthcott.com 8pm, £15Does anybody love anybody anyway? So asked insane, Welsh, poet philosopher Howard Jones in 1983. Finally someone dares to answer. Having sorted out religion (Christ on a Bike) and politics (Hitler Moustache), the star of the award winning podcast “As It Occurs To Me” and Radio 4’s “Richard Herring’s Objective” seeks to define and destroy love. Before love destroys him. Again. Does Richard’s dry-cleaner genuinely love him? How could a romantic gesture involving Ferrero Rochers get dangerously out of control?

12 February SPAMALOTPrincess Theatre, Torbay Road, 01803 290228, princesstheatre.org.uk, 7.30pm, £14.50 - £31.50Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (cancelled - too expensive) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features the hilarious songs He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights Of The Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

14 February AT-ANY-MOMENT-SOMETHING ELSE, BETWEEN THE SHINGLE & THE DUNE TRIPLE BILLTheatre 1, Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, 01752 585050, peninsula-arts.co.uk 7.30pm, £8How do we reconcile all by which we are touched? What do we let go of, what do we keep, what do we use to construct the whole? In Imprint, Diallo draws inspiration from these questions. At-any-moment-something-else a compelling solo with surrealist tendencies performed by Clinkard, explores a territory where events, scale and time take on incongruous, dreamlike qualities.

It began badly. I didn’t know how to work alone and I stared for long periods of time at walls not knowing what to do. In a moment of terror I wrote to 148 people and asked them to tell me what to do, and what they would like me to make…”

dark stuff is intrinsically linked to her confidence as an artist as well as to blame for her most genius and most hideous creations. From Jackson Pollock to Amy Winehouse, from Oscar Wilde to Charlie Sheen, everyone’s on something but why? From the Total Theatre award-winning creator of ‘Sex Idiot’ comes a hilarious and moving one-woman show investigating the historical links between artists and mind enhancing drugs.

1 - 4 February DNADrum Theatre, Royal Parade, 01752 267222, theatreroyal.com, 7.45pm, £13A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, where’s the incentive to put things right? First performed at the National Theatre, this startling new play is fast becoming a contemporary classic.

23 Feb - 10 Mar HORSE PISS FOR BLOOD, Drum Theatre, Royal Parade, 01752 267222, theatreroyal.com, 7.45pm, £13Cornish conspiracy theorist Virgil Ploy is paranoid. He thinks that everyone is out to get him – that includes his mother and her new husband, Dusty. He might well be right. It’s hard to know who to trust these days. But then, living on top of a secret M.O.D. chemical weapons plant can do strange things to you. Horse Piss For Blood is a bizarre and darkly funny new play about family, madness and Cornwall’s darkest secret…

Film

BLACK GOLD (TBC)Released: 24 February. Dir: Jean-Jacques AnnaudStarring: Tahar Rahim, Mark Strong and Antonio Banderas 2011/France/130 min Shot in Tunisia during the recent revolution this 1930s set drama is all about the dawn of the oil boom – a bit like There Will be Blood only with more emotion. The story centres on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. Watch out for dodgy accents from Mark Strong (British) and Antonio Banderas (Spain) playing Arabic head of state.

A DANGErOuS METHOD (TBC) Dir: David Cronenberg Stars:Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen 2011/UK/99 minOne of Hollywood’s most cerebral directors David Cronenberg (A History of Violence) takes on two of history’s most revered psychologists. In this rather odd biopic Michael Fassbender plays Carl Jung, while Viggo Mortensen takes on the mammoth task of portraying Sigmund Freud. Their shared object of affection is a patient, played by Keira Knightley, who becomes Jung’s mistress. The film charts the rise of psychoanalysis and the fall of their relationship in spectacular fashion.

ExTrEMELy LOuD AND INCrEDIBLy CLOSE (12A)Released: 17 FebruaryDir: Stephen Daldry Starring: Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, and John Goodman 2011/US/129 minA nine-year-old amateur inventor called Francophile searches New York City for the lock that matches a mysterious key left behind by his father, who died in the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. The director Stephen Daldry has racked up three Oscar nominations for his first three films (a record), but I think this could be a potential banana skin for the Billy Elliot helmer.

THE MuPPETS (u)Released: 10 February Dir: James Bobin Starring: Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and The Muppets 2011/US/103 minThe Muppets, who have disbanded and spread themselves across the world, must re-team in order to save their studio from being torn down. They enlist the help of three fans to fight off a greedy oil tycoon. The Muppets are lovable, but their films tend to be a bit hit and miss. For every Muppet Christmas Carol there is a Muppets in Space, and only time will tell whether this is the former or the latter.

STAr WArS: EPISODE I 3D (u)Released: 9 February Dir: George Lucas Starring: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Anthony Daniels1999/US/136 minJa Ja Binks and co. are back. Not content on cashing in various special editions, and Blu-ray releases, George Lucas takes his space opera into the third dimension for another pay day. Despite the shameless money making exercise, and the fact that this is worst film in the Star Wars saga, this is still science fiction at its most epic. The pod-racing sequence and climatic light sabre battle should be worth the admission price alone.

THIS MEANS WAr (TBC)Released: 17 FebruaryDir: McG Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy 2011/US/TBCIn this riff on the Mr & Mrs Smith formula two top CIA operatives wage an epic battle against each other after they discover they are dating the same woman. It does give us another opportunity to see Chris Pine flex his action muscles after his adventures as Kirk in Star Trek, and Reese Witherspoon will look as cute as pie. So all in all, this should be a perfectly passable way to spend a weekday evening.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK (TBC)Released: 10 FebruaryDir: James Watkins Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer and Ciarán Hinds2011/UK/TBCHarry Potter grows up. In his first role since dropping the wand and Hogwarts robes, Daniel Radcliffe stars in this gothic horror tale based on the Susan Hill novel of the same name. The film also marks the return of Hammer Film Productions to the forefront of the movie business and a return to unnerving subject matter that made the studio so popular in the 1970’s. In this dark thriller, Arthur Kipp, a young lawyer, travels to a remote village where he discovers the ghost of a scorned woman is terrorising the locals. It’s a bit of a cross between Sleepy Hollow and The Haunting.

Someone once said that Sweden was famous for three things: vodka, Abba and high taxes. Of course, that was before FIRST AID KIT appeared on the scene with their worldly wisdom and otherworldly vocal harmonies. Here in the chandeliered elegance of Bush Hall, the Söderberg sisters’ ethereal folk music takes on a whole new, strange veneer – these songs are riven from grassy meadows and misty mountains not pink-hued, extravagant ballrooms (London, 6th Dec). But once the intensely intimate melodies of ‘You’re Not Coming Home Tonight’ glide through the venue there’s no escaping the fact that we are in the presence of heart-wrenching greatness. With a host of songs from their new album ‘The Lion’s Roar’ (most notably ‘Emmylou’ and the beguiling title track) Johanna and Clara Söderberg – replete with live drummer, Mattias Bergqvist – were relaxed and focussed, playful and pitch-perfect, utilising acoustic guitar, autoharp and synth to augment what is, essentially, a life-affirming vocal-led experience. As if to prove their natural talent, the sisters moved away from the microphones to perform the mesmerising ‘Ghost Town’ in all its vulnerable, acoustic majesty. Opener, JO ROSE, wasn’t the most forceful of distractions – plucking benignly at an under-sized acoustic and cooing like someone who’d traded in their balls for a pair of marshmallows. Still, his folksie trappings didn’t detract from the main event and, later, he was warmly welcomed back onstage with FAK for a wonky rendition of Lucinda Williams ‘Sharp Cutting Wings’.

Our fears of another treacherous winter tour were quickly allayed as we hit the mild, moist road with GREAT CYNICS and SMOKEY BASTARD (14th-20th Dec). Great Cynics were as unassuming and gently inspiring as we’ve come to expect, cantering through their short and cheerful songs with an admirable sense of perspective. Yours truly even sat in on drums for one of their shows (probably not the highlight of my illustrious musical career). Reading folk-punks, Smokey Bastard, are one of those bands who would be excellent if they formed in five years time, when all the members (and there’s a fair few of ‘em) had learned the virtue of letting music breathe. As it was, they were akin to a horse race with banjo, mandolin, penny whistle, accordion and a brace of guitars all galloping, spiritedly, towards the finishing line. Naturally, a few good songs did worm their way through the merry clutter; the cutely titled ‘Aspirations I Have Some’ and the a cappella shanty ‘My Son John’ certainly proved that they do have the bill-paying skills when they put their minds to it.

It’s New Year’s Eve (so important it merits its own capital letters) and we’re back at the White Rabbit once again, ready to ring the changes, wring out our sweaty shirts and suck the whisky out of our soggy cravats. KAT MARSH found the time to shed her King Blues skin and proffer some soulful solo sassiness. Bringing the tensile hardcore noise, DEAD POETS were on fire (and their competent Weezer cover perfectly executed). All the brute force of a falling wall, all the sharpness of a kasumi knife, the band are duly primed for bigger things. And then there was COSMO JARVIS: loveable rogue, unwitting spokesman for a generation and pretty decent songwriter. With one eye on melodrama and the other turned in on his own neuroses, Cosmo taps into universal themes in his inimitable, idiosyncratic way, resulting in a batch of folk-tinged, indie-pop songs that no-one could compose no matter how much they wanted to. And that’s a very good thing. Meanwhile, stories of CJ’s subsequent arrest and twelve hour detainment at Charles Cross pig-pen were greatly accurate. Bless him. See-ya bye.
