We’ve also been down in beautiful Falmouth hanging out with Alex Brinnen of Faltown skateboards, reviewing the regions best Mexican restaurants and putting together our graffiti inspired

Call for entries: Bright Young Things 2012 The Eden Project’s annual talent show ‘Bright Young Things’ is now open for entries for its 2012 show. The show returns for its fourth time on January 28 next year. It gives talented 13-19 year olds in the South West chance to show off their skills on Eden’s world-famous stage and the competitions theme this year will be ‘Gold’, in honour of the Olympics being held in London next year. All entrants are being asked to submit pieces of art, film or animation, dance or performance and photography or creative writing. Musicians and bands can also enter, although these do not need to be themed around ‘Gold’. Shows for a Fiver at Theatre Royal PlymouthTheatre Royal Plymouth has just announced its new scheme which enables young people aged 26 and under to purchase tickets for just five pounds on a Friday evening. The ‘Friday Fiver Scheme’ aims to encourage young people into the theatre and experience some of the great shows they have to offer at a bargain price. The scheme comes off the back of the theatres young audience membership scheme, A Night Less Ordinary (ANLO). Since ANLO, the theatre has given away over 8000 free tickets and since it is no longer being funded nationally, Theatre Royal has decided to continue the membership locally and to expand so that all young people (not just ANLO members) have access to cheap tickets. Eden Sessions release greatest hits album This month the Eden Project and Warner Music release a new 2-CD compilation of music by artists who have played at the Eden Sessions. Muse Donate £15,000 to Plymouth University Music StudentsInternationally-acclaimed, Brit award winning rockers, Muse, originally from Teignmouth, have donated £15,000-worth of state-of-the-art equipment to music undergraduate students at Plymouth University.The equipment will let students get hands-on experience and develop recording skills used in the production of television, film, live performances and video games with equipment such as a modular analogue synthesiser, two liquid channel pre-amps, and a set of specialist orchestral and instrumental microphones. British Art Show 7 comes to PlymouthThe best of contemporary British Art came to the West Country for the first time last month and is set to stay until 4th December. Taking place every five years and touring to only four cities in the UK, this is a pretty big deal for Plymouth. 39 selected artists have been chosen on the grounds of their significant contribution to contemporary art in the last five years. All of the artworks included in the show have been produced since 2005 and include sculpture, painting, installation, drawing, photography, film, video and performance with many artists creating new pieces just for the exhibition. Josh T Pearson’s solo album, The Last of the Country Gentleman, was written from the ashes of a fraught two-year relationship and Josh says he almost didn’t finish it. While most artists profess their break-up albums help them get through, as you’ll see from this interview, Josh isn’t ‘most artists’.

“The whole process was pretty painful,” he said. The middle and the end was pretty painful. And the beginning was most painful. This really took it out of me. It didn’t help like I thought it would. I started playing with no plan to really record but was thinking could it help me, and normally it does but with these songs, the only real help I got is what it does for other people.” But it’s not all hopeless, he said: “Time has been a good healer. And moving is good.”

And he hasn’t been ‘home’, in Texas that is, for almost a year – living a nomadic life on the roads of Europe. He was in London when we spoke to him but he’s spent the last 12 months staying on various couches and in hotels and it’s taking it’s toll as he continues to steer clear of the booze.

“I’ve been clear from alcohol for three long years now,” he said. “I tried for a couple of years before that to regulate it but when I drank, I really drank. If I could drink in moderation it would be OK, but there’s not a lot of that in Texas. A switch would go off in me and it was a real problem – I would just get angry. I went cold turkey. I had a couple of buddies who had gone before me. I spent two years before that trying to slow it down, doing two days a week or just drinking liquor, wine or beer but if I have any of it I just go off the rails. I’d have a beer and go onto whisky, it’s like an old faithful friend. The first year was pretty difficult. You have to get a whole new

set of friends and people have to learn that you mean it when you say no. You just gotta stay alive.”He cuts a lonely figure on the stage but here is a man who needs no gimmicks, his undeniable magnetism, distinctive style (though he spent much of Green Man festival telling people he wasn’t Iron and Wine) combined with some of the most heartbreaking songs you’ll ever hear makes him one of the most powerful and moving live acts you’ll ever see. His gigs are a fantastic array of light and dark. You get these heavy, emotional songs accented with some endearing humour – a deliberate effort by Josh to ensure he doesn’t sink into a dark, melancholic hole he can’t get out of.

He said: “It’s partly deliberate, to keep the right head space. If I get too low on it, I would just freeze there. It makes people feel good but it’s mainly just to keep my own head from getting too dark. The music jokes are always a hit (What’s the difference between a musician and a pizza? A pizza can feed a family!) but I’ve been telling them for too long. I’ll have to come up with some new material.” He added: “I’m a pretty funny guy, it’s just when I get alone I get pretty depressed.”

Josh is a big fan of some of the UK festivals he plays – particularly Green Man in Wales and End of the Road in Dorset. He said: “All the bands that played there were great and that’s why I like these small festivals, they’re small enough to really feel it. Though there’s nothing wrong with the bigger festivals.” He also fessed up to stealing a mirror from the backstage area at End of the Road and hoped they’d have him back despite his thieving ways! Hardly very Christian of him hey?! He said: “I’ve had plenty of battles with Christianity. It’s still a struggle sometimes, that’s why they call it faith. It’s a love/hate relationship.”

How did you first get involved in music? I started playing guitar at around the age of seven as my Dad used to play and that’s all I wanted to do. I just kept playing, and my sister always sang along with me. I then began performing in pubs when I was 12, accompanied by my dad as I wasn’t old enough to be in there on my own! I then joined Cornish Rock Band Rootjoose, which became very successful.

How did The Raise get together?When Rootjoose split, we had many songs written that were intended for the second album. I then joined a new band, Rairbirds whilst playing guitar with other artists such as David Hallyday. I also had my own recording studio and before I knew it I had about 15 songs! I knew I had to do something with them. My friend Roger suggested we made a band, we both loved the same style of music and it just felt right. We then found Darren and Mike, and before we knew it we had The Raise!

Where did the name ‘The Raise’ come from?I knew I wanted a name beginning with ‘R’ as that is the first letter of my name, so it was a case of brainstorming ideas with a friend when he said the word ‘Raise’. It felt right as I felt it reflected our music, sort-of uplifting and positive.

Who are your main influences?Definitely the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Hendrix. I think any guitarist’s influences come from Jimmy! Also, anything with a strong riff and good vocal harmonies. I also like a bit of dance and electro and tech music, so my taste is a bit varied.

Tell us about your new album ‘In another life’The song ‘In Another Life’ was really the theme for the rest of the album without even realising it. I wrote the song, and it’s very much about a new start and starting again which when I kept writing, seemed to be the theme throughout the album. But it was definitely right and I just went with it. I’m a strong believer in going with your instincts and what feels right so that’s what I did.

What has been the highlight of your year so far?Most bands would say a big, amazing gig with a huge audience, but for us, bearing in mind we haven’t been together too long, was actually playing for a friend of ours in a field for her 25th birthday party. To be honest when we arrived, it was raining and we didn’t exactly think it was going to be the best gig! However it was definitely a highlight as it was the first time that the band really came together and played well. I guess it was a good sign for the future.

How would you describe your sound?In a few words, I’d have to say Retro Riff based Rock. A mash-up of Led Zeppelin, T-Rex, and ACDC.

Coming from the south west yourselves what’s the best thing about the south west coast?I just love it here. Having toured various places in the UK and Europe, it’s always a great feeling driving over the Tamar Bridge, as I know I’m home then. Even though I come from the East Midlands, I’ve always been a country bumpkin at heart, it was me that suggested moving to the South West as my grandparents lived here and I just loved it so much. I have to be by the sea!

I see you’ve been booked as headline act for Newquay’s Bucca festival, what can people expect from your show at the festival?To have lots of fun, big rocking riffs, strong backing vocals and happy melodies that you will be humming on the way home! We are about having a good time and playing music that makes us and our audience happy.

What advice would you give for aspiring musicians in the south west?Do something different. A lot of venues want cover bands as that’s what fills the place but I would definitely say you have to showcase your own songs, even if you fail, so you get to learn the process of writing songs that people love. It’s great to hear something with your influences in it, experiment with different sounds. Basically, play until your fingers bleed!

To date Devon-based band Melosa have been described as funk-ska, Latin-reggae and even flamenco-blues at one point, but in truth ska is probably the genre that fits best. “Yeah, ska is probably the closest description, but then people think we’re going to sound like The Specials or something,” says Melosa vocalist and ukulele player, Olly Heriz. He explains this is an issue that the band has struggled with: “Venues specialise in one or two genres and even festivals have specific styles they’re looking for. It’s easier to sell something if you can just stamp ska, or rock, or dance on it. A lot of the industry is quite scared of anything that doesn’t fit into a box.”

While being difficult to categorise makes life a little harder for Melosa when it comes to approaching venues, their originality makes them a hit at festivals. “Nowadays we prefer to be known as a festival band. We play a sort of conscious party music and I think that’s what festivals are all about really – having a good time but also learning something, being part of a more conscious society/scene,” says Olly who cites Boomtown Fair and Beautiful Days festival as this year’s highlights.

Melosa are known for their intense, high-energy shows and they put a big emphasis on playing live. “With ten of us on stage it’s visually quite a big show to start with, but the main thing is how the set builds. We’re not just a straight down the line ska band, so we like to play a few of our deeper more lyrical songs before we get to the hard core party tunes – it reaches a sort of full on ska crescendo – its really high energy stuff!”

Melosa’s debut album, A New Chapter, was recorded at Broadwater Studios, just outside Exeter and mastered at StarDelta Mastering, also in Devon, so it’s about as locally produced as you can get. “We’ve released four EPs over the years but have never been 100% happy with the outcome – we’re a really live act and a lot of that energy tended to get lost playing to click tracks or layering instruments one on top of the

other so we wanted to do this differently – if we were going to do a full album we wanted it to really sound like us and to get over what we do live,” explains Olly.

A New Chapter is made up of ten original tracks and one cover version – their ska version of Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues. The album is home to a real mixture of different styles: ska, some reggae and swing, a bit of new Orleans style jazz and some funk too and is being sold on Amazon & iTunes for £3.99. Melosa are donating £1 from each sale to charity: Amnesty international, Médecins Sans Frontières and Urafiki.

“We’re really blown away by how into our sound people are, so we just want to keep playing to as many people, in as many places, as possible over the next year. After that we want to get over to France, Italy and Spain – so much of the music that has heavily influenced us is from the rest of Europe that it would be great to get out there for a season,” says Olly, when asked what’s next for the band. So, would the band ever relocate in search of bigger audiences? “This is a decision every band from the South West has to live through. Most bands make the move to Bristol or beyond, as there are larger scenes and networks of musicians, but I can definitely say no, we’re staying here in Devon! I’m not a big fan of cities and although some of the guys come from London etc. I think we’re all quite happy being surrounded by countryside, with fresher air and room to think!

Iration Steppas’ discography reads as an impressive list of 7” singles, 10” & 12” dubs, albums and compilations. In 2008 they collaborated with French reggae artists, Improvisators Dub, creating the album Inna Steppa Dub. And there is newer material on the horizon. “We’re also working on a new album, but the reason it’s taking such a long time is because we’re always abroad. Weekdays I’m either getting over a jetlag, or getting ready for the next trip. But the new stuff is sounding good, and it features Tenna Stelling.”

For most reggae fans, Leeds may not be the first name that pops into the head, but for Mark it has held everything he needed to lay his foundations. And he‘s been keeping it consistent for over twenty years. “The vibes have always been strong in Leeds, from the 70s on, with a good reggae influence and big soundsystems. But Iration has been the only one that’s really branched out. I’ve been doing this now for twenty one years and kept playing, week in week out. I want to better myself as an entertainer, I want to enjoy myself, and I do.”

So what can we expect at the Plymouth date? “The set up is CDJs, mixer and microphones. I’ll have an MC/singer with me (I usually work with El Sata, Danman, YT and Kenny Knots). I don’t just play my own music, there’s going to be a varied selection from the 70s, 80s, 90s and onwards, plus lots of newer music. I sometimes play vinyl too but always. And we continue to press our music on vinyl. We have our own label now, called Iration Steppas”

Hailing from Leeds, Mark Iration was brought up on the reggae soundsystem culture, following in the footsteps of heavyweights such as Jah Shaka. Always keen to travel around the country in search of reggae, and with an ever-expanding record collection, the next step was to start his own soundsystem, and so Iration Steppas were born in 1990. Soon after, Mark teamed up with Dennis Rootical, and their musical collaboration has been continued since: making records, tearing up dances, touring the world - leaving their mark on the global reggae community.

As well as creating their own following, iration Steppas have supported reggae giants including Burning Spear, Israel Vibration, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Scientist and Mad Professor. They’ve even gone head-to-head with their mentors: Jah Shaka and King Tubby.

As well as a being a soundsystem, Iration Steppas also play live, with a full band line-up, with Mark at the mixing desk and Dennis on bass guitar. This set up has seen them rock many festivals, all over the world. At the Plymouth show, Mark will be DJing, accompanied by an MC/singer. This year alone, Mark has been at it hard. “I’ve been busy every week, either in the UK or abroad”, he said. “We’ve been to Mexico, Chile, and Japan, and we’re off to Australia shortly after the Plymouth show. Reggae is starting to pick up over there, with pockets of people who are into it.”

Arriba, Arriba! We come over all Mexican this month…Food

FALMOuTH Three Amigos2 Bank Place, Falmouth, TR11 4AT / 01326 317 477 / www.threeamigosrestaurant.co.ukFor Mexican food in Falmouth head to the Three Amigos, for freshly prepared, flavoursome food, whether you’re a heat fiend or prefer the milder dishes from across the pond, then there’ll be something here to satiate. To quench your thirst you will find an extensive wine list, tequilas, cocktails and cervezas. Try the Mexican Revenge cocktail - It’s like a Margarita but lengthened with Cranberry juice. Very refreshing. We started with the Nachos - the Tortilla chips were handmade, the dish was stacked high with salsa, guacamole and Chilli and there was just the right amount of jalapenos. Great. Not enough cheese though, and presentation could have been better… The menu has all the Mexican classics you would expect, Fajitas, Burritos, Enchiladas, Tacos etc. There is also a decent selection of vegetarian options, mild options and locally inspired options. On top of this, Three Amigos also offers a wide variety of burgers and local, matured steaks. I opted for the Chicken Chimichanga, A crisp tortilla filled with shredded chicken in a tomato and chipotle salsa, served with salsa, sour cream and guacamole and 3 amigos’ green rice. Portions were generous, and very tasty, on the whole pretty good value for money. The dessert list was limited, but who goes to a Mexican for dessert anyway?

Expect a cozy & funky with low lighting, and decorated with quirky paintings and an extensive and impressive Mexican menu, covering all the classics: sizzling fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, nachos, dips and Chilli options aplenty. You can easily feast on the delicious starters alone: corn chips, guacamole, sour cream, salsa and jalapeno peppers. And they keep topping you up as you run out, so you can also use the dips as condiments to go with your main course. The beef and black bean enchilada is a delightful choice for a main, and the portions are extremely generous. The steak is of the highest quality, and prepared for your liking: rare or well-done. It compliments the black bean Chilli beautifully, and it also comes with rice, and a crispy salad. Vegetarian diets are also catered for thoroughly: the proprietor and her children are all lifelong vegetarians. The vegetarian enchilada, is just one example: it comes with sweet potatoes, mushrooms, but-ternut squash and spinach, served in a superb creamy cilantro sauce. This is a place you’ll want to go back to time after time. And there are also cocktail deals, DJs and live bands.

TRuRO Zafiros3 New Bridge Street, Truro / 01872 223163 / www.zafiros.co.ukA little bit of everything for everybody’ promises the website… Even some Mexican inspired Chilli con Carne? Yes. Zafiros is a busy little hub in the centre of Truro, and although a pub by night markets itself as a coffee lounge by day and also boasts a truly extensive menu. The homemade chilli is a bargain, delicious and perfectly portioned. There’s a veggie Three Bean option or Chilli con Carne - both full of well balanced flavours, not too spicy, topped with nachos and cheese and served with a chunk of fresh bread. The selection of desserts were so tempting, particularly the ‘Tropical Cheesecake’ but after a great main meal and one of the recommended speciality coffees, I just couldn’t fit one in. The classic Irish coffee was delicious… looked right, tasted right, and just one amongst a great variety. Clean and contemporary, Zafiros has a Mediterranean influence with great staff and a real friendly atmosphere. You really can expect to find a menu with something for everyone (cooked by the two new resident chefs!), a well stocked bar and good coffee. Kids are welcomed throughout the day and can remain well entertained with toys and books provided, and impressively… wireless headphones for the flat screen, a spot of genius!

PLyMOuTH Aribas58, Notte Street, PLyMOuTH, PL1 2AG / 01752 603303 / www.arribasmexican.comAribas will impress you before you even look at the menu. Inside the grand period building, in Plymouth’s hip Barbican area, Aribas has a stylish, slightly rustic interior with warm colours and low lighting, but it’s the buzzing atmosphere that has the wow factor. The menu is extensive and features all the Mexican dishes you’d expect and more. From Na-chos, Tacos, Enchiladas and Chimichangas through to house favourites like Aribas meatballs and Beef Steak Chilli – there’s sure to be either something you love or would-love-to-try on the menu. Out with someone who doesn’t ‘do’ Mexican? Order them a steak, salad, seafood, pizzas or burger. My Jalapeno Cheese Poppers were supreme – five of the tasty chilli cheese rockets, neatly presented and served with a red pepper jam. To follow I had King Prawn Fajitas – a generous helping of huge prawns served on a sizzling platter with onions, jalapenos and peppers, served with flour tortillas, sour cream, salsa and guacamole. Exceptionally tasty, as was my boyfriends Beef Burrito. We washed our meal down with a nice bottle of red, although the drinks menu is extensive and the cocktails the table next door were savouring looked very good indeed. Room for dessert? I recommend the Crème brûlée, which was devine. With great food, attentive service and a brilliant bustling atmosphere it should be no surprise that Aribas gets very busy. Book ahead if you can.

Like many, Alex Brinnen got into skateboarding after watching the first Back to the Future film staring Michael J Fox. He got a board, as well as the obligatory Converse shoes, flannel shirt and body warmer and set about doing acid drops off his mom’s rockery. Skating quickly took a back seat to mountain bike racing, until some 15 years later when he moved to Cornwall, discovered downhill skateboarding and freeriding, became obsessed with the sport again and, in the process, setup successful skate company, Faltown…

How did setting up Faltown come about? Faltown was kind of a happy accident. I studied 3D Design at FCA and started to make some skateboards after watching Tim and Mark, college work shop technicians, making them and then going sliding on them in their lunch breaks! This was a revolution to me and it was these guys that influenced me in the early days and got me psyched to get back on a skateboard and to actually start making them. Chris Humphris, my Faltown business partner, was on Graphic design so he started to spray up the boards with unique designs. Our friend Dom Lilly, Random Rides skate shop owner, suggested selling boards for us in his shop, so at the end of our second year at uni we went into production and Faltown was officially born.

What’s the brand ethos? The Faltown Ethos is something along the lines of personal flair – individuality if you like. As a small company there is no way we can afford to support the top riders in the country with the necessary backing they want/need to push themselves to the next level.

So, we try and sponsor people that are unique and stand out from the crowd, as well being good skaters.

How do you go about designing boards and having them made?

The process is different for every board. First, there has to be a need – we’re not the type of company that will just make an imitation board, and we wont make anything that we wouldn’t like to ride ourselves. For example, I’m a massively keen surfer and snowboarder, so our latest board, the 4.2 Eco-Carve or SAS Special, is designed to emulate big surf style carving and deep powder riding. We have also gone to the trouble of making this board back foot orientated, to add even more similarities to surfing and snowboarding.

We sourced a lot of Maple wood a few years ago and set up in partnership with L&R Unique Furniture and Joinery. We worked together to set up a small-scale production line using

our wood and processes and their locally sourced, and very talented, craftsmen! So you can see that this board is not just a skateboard, it is a well thought out hand crafted, British made board. To top it all off all the excess materials get recycled into fuel cells, that are used to heat local homes and workshops. 20% of all our profits from that board also go directly to the SAS for the Environmental Marine Litter Campaign too.

Has the transition from skater to company owner been an organic one? It’s been an interesting one! I’m constantly been torn between the two. Sometimes I just want to skate and surf, and when I do the business normally suffers. We set up the company so that we would have the freedom to surf and skate when we wanted, so to take this out of the picture would be like breaking one of the Ten Commandments. There is no doubt about it that the skateboard industry is a tough industry to be in, so I take any perks of the job I can and one of them is the freedom to surf and skate when I want! Surfing and skating is worth more to me tha n just making money!

Tell us about your DVD. The DVD was a compilation of four years worth of work. We’d been documenting ourselves ever since the start of Faltown and we felt we had a story to tell. We had gotten very well known throughout, well, the world, for our particular style of downhill skateboarding and off the back of that we got invited out to California and all round the UK to do events, demos and quite often the team would be teaching others how to do their tricks. So, we put together a bit of a rockumentry about ourselves, our team and our journey and, well, we’ve sold over 1000 copies, so I guess people were interested. We also won the Cornwall Film Festival “Extreme sports” category that year, which was amazing.

We bet you’ve got big plans for the future? Yes we do but some of it is still very much top secret! But in the spirit of the question I will say this: we are currently working with another Cornish company to make the Lightest ever freeride skateboard in the world. We also have a new glove going through research and design at the moment. The gloves are specially designed to allow us to put our hands on the ground, at high speeds, allowing us to offset our weight, so we can go round corners quicker and pull power slides and some freestyle slides too.

Emily Barker and the Red Clay HaloStaring At The X (Fatcat)

I’m a stickler for any folk singer who stretches his or her reach back to a bygone era, decades before singer-songwriter meant ‘sounds-a-bit-like-Frank-Turner-or-Laura-Marling’. Aussie native, Emily Barker, and her all-female chamber posse employ all manner of analogue instrumentation – accordion, flute, cello, banjo, fiddle – along with a distinctly ‘60s traditional hue and strong lyrical narrative to arrive at something floating in the ether somewhere between Judy Collins and Seth Lakeman. Pre-dating Marling by a margin (this is Barker’s third album), one would hope that the intimate heartbeat of ‘Dancers’ and the incredibly moving ‘Pause’ will push her into a limelight that she’s more than capable of withstanding.

The DeafToot Whistle Plunk Boom! (Speed Beat)

Dutch garage punk isn’t a booming trade these days but Hague quartet, The Deaf, couldn’t care less. Clearly indebted to the old (Sonics, 13th Floor Elevators, The Who, B52s) and the new (Hives, International Noise Conspiracy) the likes of ‘BBB-Bang’ and the Kinsgmen-saluting ‘Are You Scared?’ are hyperactive hepcat jams that run rampant through the ‘60s underground with soulful abandon, boasting two fine sets of lungs from each gender and clearly designed for hips and toes. They may have left it too late, though, chasing the coat-tails of a scene that only comes around once every decade or so. Still, have love for retro amps and Farfisa organs, will travel.

Wild FlagWild Flag(Wichita)

Remember Sleater-Kinney? Of course you don’t, you’re 22 years old. Or much older but didn’t spend your time listening to pre-grunge feminists changing the face of the underground. Wild Flag feature members of SK, amongst others, and play the kind of anti-pop that you’d expect from such a fine pedigree of contrary, cerebral movers and shakers. Opener ‘Romance’ is a groove-laden curio that delights in its strong melodic interplay and beat-combo aspirations. ‘Something Came Over Me’ maintains the serrated guitar pop dynamic, while ‘Boom’ harnesses the spirit of original riot grrrl, Lene Lovich. Elsewhere, the band’s cheery nonchalance and fondness for ‘80s post-punk protagonists comes to the fore, constantly underpinned by a prickly musical base. Neato.

Coldplay Mylo Xyloto(Parlophone)

Is anyone, apart from hopelessly moderate Coldplay fanatics, still interested in what Chris Martin and co are up to? Can the band’s steady descent (and it is a descent) into twinklesome U2 territory make discerning music lovers hate them less than they already do? Will the keys-soaked bombast of ‘Charlie Brown’ and ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ lift the band above all criticism as they grasp for some kind of (in)credible longevity? Is the dystopian love story at the heart of ‘Mylo Xyloto’ something that will shed new light on our troubled times? No, no, no and no. Will I be recommending people eat their own arm off before purchasing this record.

Mungo’s Hi FiForward Ever(Scotch Bonnet)

Following 2008’s triumphant Soundsystem Champions, Mungo’s Hi Fi present 15 brand new tracks of killer reggae cuts, featuring a varied cast of singers and MCs. One very important guest is the late Sugar Minott, who opens the album. (Possibly his last recording: he only passed away last year). Each guest brings something different to the table, from the smooth soulful vocals of Pacey, to the rhythmic toasting of Charlie P, Kenny Knots and Mr Williams. The album captures the authentic essence of reggae and dancehall, with modern recording techniques: bass-heavy, crisp and well-produced. You could easily load up this and Mungo’s last album on each deck, and play an entire DJ set. Brilliant.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (Sour Mash)

The inside of the CD case reads: “Stunned that something so simple can be so good”. That‘s pretty much how it‘s always been, and it sums up Noel’s semi-self-produced solo debut. Everybody’s On the Run sets the mood with heart-warming strings, against which his trademark soaring vocals do the business. Dream On, and most of the rest of this album are familiar territory, in the tradition of Oasis songs sung by Noel. Sometimes it is a tad too simple, like current single AKA What a Life, but his approach to melody gets a lot out of simplicity. Unsurprisingly superior to his brother‘s post-Oasis efforts.

Prince Fatty Meets The Mutant HiFi Return of Gringo(Mr Bongo)

Prince Fatty produced Holly Cook’s debut album, one of the best new releases this year. Here he teams up with Nick Coplowe (former producer of Asian Dub Foundation and many On-U Sound acts) for what is best described as Spaghetti Western ska. It’s entirely instrumental, with skanking rhythms aplenty, laced with Wild West samples and a very slick surf guitar, playing solos on the low strings, in the style of Neol Davies from The Selecter. The idea works extremely well, but the album’s downfall is repetition of the same themes. Without any vocals to push it along, and very little change of style, it all wears a bit thin after about the fifth track.

House of Fix This Is Ruckno(Beetroot)

Digital “punk rockers” Jason Leach and Kit McKay release their vinyl-only second album. Punk and electronica have been mingling for decades, since the 70s, so it’s no longer enough to just shout and scream obscenities, with no real attitude or direction. Lyrics like “I want a girl who’s a brazen harlot” or “Fuck off…I’m gonna piss on you”, will only excite or shock an audience under the age of 10. Anybody who actually knows anything about punk, or really gives a fuck about what it stood for, will instantly clock that this is about as far removed from punk as you could possibly get. House of SHIT, more like. Come on, lads: into the bin you go.

Ryan AdamsAshes and Fire(PAX-AM)

Despite being a mardy prick at times, there’s no doubt that Ryan Adams can write some truly awesome songs. Unfortunately, you often have to sift through a lot of dirge to find the real gems but this album could just mark a return to his early glory days of Heartbreaker and Gold. Here’s hoping. Every song on this album is truly beautiful but each in a slightly different way. The opener, Dirty Rain, is a low key heartbreaker and the perfect start to an Adams album. It moves seamlessly into the upbeat title track before punching you in the stomach with the tear jerking Come Home, which is almost as good as the astounding I Taught Myself To Grow Old. But the best track is the epic Invisible Riverside, which showcases just how good Adams is.

Manic Street Preachers National Treasures(Sony)

The arrival of this album is tinged with much sadness. Sadness not just at the thought of missing Manic Richey’s absence from the best band to ever come out of the Valleys (Welsh Male Voice Choir aside obvs) but because it documents their imminent break from music. Boo hoo. But they ain’t gone yet and this is a pretty good parting gift. National Treasures opens with the full force of Motown Junk, blasting through their punkier early material, including the underrated Slash’n’Burn and iconic Roses in the Hospital to their commercially successful days of A Design For Life and Tolerate to the more recent hits, Your Love Alone Is Not Enough and Postcards From A Young Man.

FeistMetals(Polydor/Interscope/Universal/Arts&Crafts))

We’ve not heard much from Feist in recent years but if that’s what it takes to create an album this beautiful then so be it. She teased the album with some brilliantly shot short clips on Youtube, which successfully built up the anticipation and expectations have been well and truly met. Her vocals are faultless, with that Tori Amos mystery shining through in tracks such as Graveyard and Caught A Long Wind. But there’s also slight elements of James Blake to be heard. Not wanting to deliberately compare a female artist to Kate Bush (seems too easy) track 6, The Circle Married The Line, does warrant this as it’s got that creative, slightly eerie edge to it.

James BlakeEnough Thunder EP(Atlas)

James Blake has been a hot ticket this year, and over the summer, he’s been showcasing some of his new material and here it is. It’s punctuated by a Joni Mitchell cover making one thing that cover versions will feature prominently in this boy’s career and also has his much-talked about collaboration with Bon Iver in the mix. However, when put together the whole thing sounds like a motley bunch of experimental crap with just one or two highlights. The opener, Once We All Agree, sounds like it could’ve been written by any teenager in their bedroom with a Macbook but things pick up towards the end with a well-executed mix of dubstep tones and Anthony and the Johnsons-esque vocals.

Justice Audio, Video, Disco(Ed Banger)

It was always gonna be hard to follow up their debut, even more so as things have moved on musically, I suppose what’s more important is whether this album is worth checking and the answer is a definite hell yeah. This album is far closer to french friends Phoenix sound than it is to Daft Punk but that’s not such a bad thing. Had Justice returned and tried to make a similar sounding album I’m sure everyone and their nan would have jumped on them, this however, is a step towards a more melodic, 70’s AOR sound, part Air, part Steely Dan but still very Justice. Synths, rock stylings and hooks a go go, Helix is a personal favourite and I’m surprised it wasn’t the first single.

DamuUnity(Keysound Recordings)

Every music has a time and a place, when I was young, all I wanted was saturday night singalong bangers all day and every day, then as I grew older I had other feelings and need music to accompany it. When you are driving home after a wicked night out, your clothes still damp and stuck to you from dancing like a loon for hours, remembering when the DJ dropped that one tune you’d waited all night to hear, the sun is just starting to come up and you wind the windows down to feel the breeze and help you stay awake on that last stretch before home this is the album you play, some tracks will lose you in their intricate layers and sounds and some will just make you smile and remember when you;re friend got caught doing something they shouldn’t have. If you don’t have nights like that, then maybe you should start.

A collaboration between Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin. I remember when people starting asking for dubstep at Wonkeylegs I though I should investigate and was pointed towards people like Boxcutter and Burial, neither of which I could see working in a club and this album seems to have returned to that kind of sound, minimal, dub influenced but far closer to trip hop and downbeat. The real highlight for me is the vocal track featuring Ed Thomas but that says more about my music taste than it does this album. If you like your dubstep less dancefloor orientated and aren’t into all the Radio 1 friendly crossover stuff then this album is for you.

Chinese ManRacing With the Sun(Chinese Man Records)

Sometimes all you need do is be different. I’ve been listening to far too much wubbly wubbly dubstep and drum n bass so when this album came on, it was like a breath of fresh air. Well put together samples many with a far eastern feel, some cracking beats and some mighty fine flow from some mc’s I’ve never heard of. This guy has been around for a while now dipping his toes in a musical hotpot of styles and with this album iI feel he has hit his stride. If you missed summer and want an album that will take you back there then this is for you. If you used to down with Grand Central and the likes of RjD2 and shadow then you should surely check this out.

Dave Joy First Impressions (Nomad Mix)(White)

First appearing a good decade ago on the legendary Planet Traxx label, this Teutonic hard trance track certainly caused an impact and was played by pretty much every big name DJ out there (we used to smash it out at the Dance Academy!). There have been many remixes, both legal and bootleg since but this version by Australia’s Nomad is definitely one of the finest. Cleverly chopping the S.H.O.K.K mix of the track up and adding a really grinding hard bassline, whilst upping the pace of the original, this rocks and will feature in my sets for quite some time.

Lee MacMemory Loss(Subground)

Subground is the new project from Italian DJ Activator (a man known for his hardstyle and hard trance productions). In a different direction to the norm, Subground concentrates on tech laden grooves with a very serious bassline to them, and this is the first release on the label that isn’t produced in-house. Ireland’s Lee Mac delivers two tracks of genre defying filth that will definitely win pride of place in many a DJ box this coming winter, with Memory Loss being the preferred cut. Check out Activator’s Denim mix of ‘Animated’ as well on the other side for something that is more than worthy of a play.

Henry Cullen + Tom LawsVirus Night(Hydraulix)

The Hydraulix imprint can always be relied on for dark and driving techno material that is great to kick off a set and Henry Cullen (probably more known to readers as D.A.V.E The Drummer) teams up with Tom Laws here for two mixes of ‘Virus Night’ that rock the place. One side focuses on a quirky synth motif that builds and builds with some very sparse conga percussion and a monster of a kick, which is my preferred choice; However the Acid mix, is something else once again with some rather twisted keyboards contained within and the usual production finesse associated with the label. Definitely one for the big rooms.

TOSI Mud EP(Construct Rhythm)

This label got me hooked on Techno way back in 1999 after a chance finding in Bigga records and it’s wicked to see that like Bigga, Construct Rhythm are firstly still going, and secondly delivering records of such a high calibre. TOSI is an artist I know very little about, but the three solo productions on here are of such calibre that I doubt they are a new producer. However, what won the place in my record box is the remix provided by label owner Andreas Kraemer, who takes a behemoth of a kick, some mentalistic percussion and a dark whistle and comes up with something eerie that has middle of the woods written all over it!

Mireille Mathlener Borrowed Land(Stella Maris)

It doesn’t take long into opening song ‘Written In Blood’ – two seconds perhaps – before you’re exclaiming “PJ Harvey!” and warming to Mireille’s woozy, twilight, drivetime country-rock. And, before you’ve had a chance to give yourself a pat on the back, Chrissie Hynde looms into earshot with vocal tail a-quivering and emotional guns a-blazing. So, we’ve established the Bristol-via-Netherlands songstress’s key influences amongst all the guitar twang and Gram Parsons shuffle but is this, her sophomore album, more than the sum of its heroines? Just about. All ten songs are well crafted and delicately handled but the likes of ‘Oh Anna’ and ‘Philomena O’Grady’ have enough gravitas to forge their own strong identity.

Cornish Casio rap may sound like an ironic tag that some underachieving smalltown wise-guys would conjure up to describe their artless racket but in the case of Hedluv + Passman it is literal, and bloody brilliant. ‘We Came Here Not For Gold’ perfectly showcases their ability to combine kitchen-sink non-drama, perky samples and pure old school Casio beats to great effect, with Passman’s rapping bordering on goofy genius. Anyone who’s seen them live will know that the duo are a visual and aural delight, like Money Mark choreographed by Darwin Deez. ‘Dreckly’ is the pick of the bunch here: an ode to the simple life, and colloquial peculiarities, on Cornwall’s not-so mean streets.

A side-project devised by Rob O’Shaughnessy and Chris Muirhead of Plymouth punks, Quarantine. Sadly, Rob died last year so Chris decided to follow the venture through as a tribute to his partner in rhyme. What we have is fifteen vignettes of naked acoustic guitars, unusual vocal delivery and a hallucinogenic, Nirvana-esque conceit. It rarely sounds like the finished article but that clearly wasn’t the point. Instead, the lyrical themes of despair, psychosis and existential reflection betray a foreboding sense of unsureness made all the more poignant by Rob’s untimely death. ‘Train Of Bones’ is full of self-lacerating imagery while the eerie ‘Flesh’ sounds like it was recorded under medication. An uneasy yet affecting listen.

You can always rely on Cornwall’s Zapoppin’ for a journey into the absurd, the abstract and the Appalachian with their harmonium and banjo-centred forays into folk, music-hall and old time jazz. They call it powerskiffle and, you know, they may be onto something. This is a compilation of their first four singles and merrily ping-pongs from the alt. cabaret (‘She’s His’) to the funereal (the second part of ‘Sweat Out’) with an off-beam lyrical whimsy that makes a mockery of ‘serious’ folk doyens. ‘Flay The Night Away’ is distinctly, melodramatically English and slightly unhinged while ‘Dark As Dogs Guts’ has you believing that they’ve discovered Italian house music. Only for a second, mind.

The exhibition is based around the theme of a comet and explores and draws together a set of concerns that thread their way through the practices of the selected artists. But the atrocities lead him to take up arms to protect children from the horrors of fighting in conflicts, and he ends up kicking ass and brandishing AK’s rather than the Bible. The film is based on a true story, but don’t expect an emotionally fraught docu-drama, it’s a high-octane action fest of the highest calibre.

Tour-time! As ever, we crossed paths with a motley crew of great, not-so-great and grating ensembles (23rd Sept - 10th Oct). First stop, Worcester (Firefly) with our homeboys, BEARFIGHT, whose belligerent punk assault paved the way for FIGHTS & FIRES and their neat quasi-hardcore tantrums. Our Sheffield initiation (Corporation) was an auspicious one. BORDERS played hard, fast and gruffly, but it was regional trio, GREAT DEEDS, who impressed the most with their nerve-wracked math-punk, caught somewhere between early Biffy Clyro and late Foals.

Ah, Norwich (Karma Kafe). Another sweet crowd and another sweatfest worth getting ill for. But the coughing and sneezing didn’t stop me from lapping up the joys of RADICUS’s old school posi-hardcore, BROKEN WINDOW EFFECT’s earnest pop-punk and the feel-good factor of GREAT CYNICS. London (Barfly) and the sickness was digging in without mercy. Ballbags. Thankfully, we had APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE and Great Cynics to stir us into action. Apologies’ combination of gut-punch riffola and heart-string tugging intimacy will be the stuff of legend once their debut album finds a home.Peterborough. Nice town square geysers. Over at the Met Lounge, THE KINGKILL and THE 925S both suffered from trebly fuzz overload to the point where it was impossible to watch them without grimacing. Next up, Wish You Were Here Fest in Cambridge (Portland Arms). We wished we were frolicking in a cold swimming pool so that’s what we did. Afterwards, we caught the disparate delights of ECHO LAKE – all moody, electro-pop intrigue – while TELLISON were simply ace, melding Futureheads’ harmonic nous with Pixies’ geek-punk charm. Lincoln (Wellington) didn’t let us down. And how could it with ABOVE THEM’s grit-gargling emissions and honest-to-goodness rock swagger? Hardcore was duly served by WITHOUT FIRE and LOWER LANDS.

Newcastle (Cluny) was a joke. No promotion equals no people. It’s not rocket science. To make matters worse we were billed with a bizarre fraggle-rock band called PSY OF THE DEAD and a cutesy acoustic couple called MODAL NODES. Our Glasgow show got cancelled so we played a last-minute soiree in Bradford (1-in-12 Club) courtesy of our good chum, Joe Tilston. It turned into one of the best shows of the tour. Above Them came down and played, the beauties; although it seemed ACID DROP were still splashing about in the Rancid paddling pool, bless ‘em. In York (Fibbers) we shared the stage with a terrifyingly inept band called THE SEADOGS. All their families were there and promptly retreated when we came on. Someone’s grandma proclaimed “This is rubbish!” when we were playing. Fuck off, nan, your grandson’s band are the pits.

Our first time in Aldershot (West End Centre). A military town, as they never cease to remind you. Ass-holes. Guildford punks, DRONES were cool, harnessing that kind of youthful optimism specific to satellite towns. Conversely, CITIES OF GLASS were indie poseurs with dreams of sucking on NME’s smarmy cock. Onto Cheltenham’s Walk The Line Festival (Frog & Fiddle). Essex boy and ‘label-mate!’ BEANS ON TOAST was funny and feisty with a neat line in social satire, while Tellison ruled, again. The promoter in Bath sure knew how to make a band feel welcome (Green Park Tavern). And best show support, too, in the shape of HOWLIN’ LORD and his Dylan-mimicking, Hank Williams-loving country airs. Beautiful. THE BLUNDERS, meanwhile, were mildly amusing with their ‘77 punk sensibilities and ridiculous banter. And finally, Bristol (Croft): a packed house and some truly great bands. Fellow headliners, Washington think-punks, RVIVR, were intense and righteous; MESSI brought the radical punk-hop smarts; CAVES gave it their pop-punk all, with Lou Hanman in vigorous form; and CANNONS & TANKS were a seething pit of Planes Mistaken-esque energy. Homeward bound. Phew! See-ya bye.
