After just three rounds of Guinness PRO14 action the rugby on show has made a real statement and last weekend we saw new records set for all of the right reasons.
Firstly, 51 tries were scored which set an all-time record – breaking the previous best of 50 that were scored in Round 6 of the old Celtic League season in 2001. Seven try-bonus points were claimed with an average of 7.3 tries per game which deliver plenty of entertainment from Galway to Port Elizabeth and all points in between.
The result in Parma between Zebre and Cardi Blues also produced another record of real achievement and one that points to growing resilience in Italian rugby. After just 10 minutes Zebre were behind by 21 points, but fought their way back to a 26-24 win which represented the biggest turnaround in the history of the Championship.
Their compatriots, Benetton, were also unlucky not to leave West Wales with two bonus points after their robust 14-man display (even 13 men at one point) against Scarlets who had a man advantage for over 50 minutes. The head coaches at Zebre and Benetton, Michael Bradley and Kieran Crowley, must take great credit for what’s happening in Italy
right now with both teams backing up their record-win seasons by claiming two victories from their opening three games for the first time.
As national head coach, Conor O’Shea has eected tangible change in the game in Italy and the clubs and the FIR deserve the plaudits for buying into his vision. This weekend Benetton travel to Ospreys in better stead than ever before while Zebre also visit Wales to face the Dragons and there is no doubting that both sides will believe they can win on the road.Only two teams remain unbeaten in the Guinness PRO14 and both of those sides will put their records to the test in South Africa for the second week in a row. Glasgow Warriors are looking red hot so far and will provide a big test for the Isuzu Southern Kings while Ulster will hope they can continue to put last season’s disappointment in the rearview mirror by beating the Toyota Cheetahs.
The Cheetahs are much changed this season but against the Warriors last week they showed plenty of attacking flair that won them so much admiration last year and Ulster will have their work cut out to contain them. It’s also becoming increasingly dicult to pick just one headline game each weekend in the Guinness PRO14. Cardi Blues welcome Munster to the Arms Park really looking to get some reward in front of a passionate home support while Scarlets travel to Galway in a battle of the 2016 and 2017 champions. If the weather plays ball on the west coast of Ireland then you can bet these two sides will follow suit.
Completing this weekend’s slate of games is Edinburgh’s trip to Dublin to face champions Leinster and where we will see a tough contest on the pitch between two teams who know that reaching the Guinness PRO14 Final Series is the bare minimum when it comes to their ambitions.
Whether you’re in the stands or watching on TV or online across our network of broadcast partners – Premier Sports, eir sport, Super Sport, TG4, S4C or DAZN – you’re going to be treated plenty of fast-paced action. The strength of the Guinness PRO14 is based around our clubs whose coaches are some of the sharpest minds in rugby and the catalogue of Test players and next generation talents in their squads.
Close to 300 internationals played in the Guinness PRO14 last season with 76 of those making their Test debuts during the campaign which speaks to the great health and sustainability of our clubs. Naturally, everyone is fighting to reach the Guinness PRO14 season at Celtic Park which will mark another historic chapter for our Championship as the showpiece game is played at a non-rugby stadium for the first time. To get access to the best oers check our ocial accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter or just visit bit.ly/glasgow2019 to get your tickets.
Enjoy the game,

SA RUGBY PRESIDENT MESSAGE
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match in the 2018 Currie Cup, proudly brought to you by Nashua and DirectAxis. The Currie Cup is one of the oldest competitions in world rugby, and we are delighted that the rich history, tradition and passion associated with the competition and the famous gold trophy still remain, since the tournament’s inception in 1891. We know that all the teams involved will give everything they have, in the name of their team-mates and their provinces, and for all of the players, featuring in the Currie Cup always is a memorable occasion. Holding aloft the Currie Cup remains one of the biggest honours and achievements for teams in South African rugby, and we are excited to see the participating sides stake a claim for a place in the final stages in attempt to reach this feat. This year every game will be vital as the competition has been revamped to feature an action-packed single round, meaning every point will count. Adding to the excitement for die-hard fans, the fixture list includes three Saturday triple-headers, something we have not had for many years. And as has always been the case, we can look forward to a new generation of player emerging from the Currie Cup – guys who will stake a claim at Vodacom Super Rugby level and later for the Springboks, where they will do our country proud.
I would like to wish both sides in action today the best of luck for the match, and for the rest of the competition. I have no doubt that they will deliver a high standard of rugby. A special thanks also to the provincial unions for all your hard work to ensure that your teams are well equipped to do their best on the field and for your contribution to keeping South African rugby fresh and exciting. Thanks to the fans who have come to the stadium to support these teams. You are not only showing your support for them, but for the Currie Cup and South African rugby, and for that we are very grateful. Your support will assist us in ensuring that the Currie Cup remains steeped in history as one of the greatest competitions in the world, and one that your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be passionate about for many years to come. And finally, to our valued partners Nashua and DirectAxis, thank you for your continued support of this wonderful competition, we really appreciate it. Enjoy the rugby!

Welcome to today’s Currie Cup match at the Toyota Stadium.
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs have a very proud, rich and successful history in the oldest domestic rugby competition in the world.
During the Super Sport Rugby Challenge, Daan Human and his technical staff did some remarkable work to lead the Toyota Free State XV all the way to the semi-finals of the competition, and in the process unearthed some promising talent. This has given Franco Smith a fantastic platform to launch the Currie Cup campaign and the Toyota Free State Cheetahs will no doubt hit the ground running.
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs welcome many new players to their ranks, and this brings a good mix of experience, youth and flair.
To Franco Smith, the rest of the coaching staff and the team, we stand alongside you and look forward to writing the next chapter of proudly Toyota Free State Cheetahs rugby with you. We know that the “never say die” attitude will be on display again this season and that you and the players will make everyone proud.
We look forward to the Currie Cup Com-petition and will continue to show the support we have provided over the past few years as not only a sponsor, but as a
proud partner of the Toyota Free State Cheetahs.
To the opposition – welcome to Toyota Stadium. The talking will be done on the field and will certainly prove to be tough, thrilling and remind rugby lovers why they love the game so much.
Lastly, and most importantly, to the loyal fans who come out and support the boys, no matter what, thank you for the unwav-ering support you show the Toyota Free State Cheetahs. You are what it is all about and it is you that the players want to make proud. Thank you again for supporting our boys!
Enjoy the match.
