GARETH STEWART
VISITORS PRESTON-BORN VISITOR
GARETH STEWART OFTEN WONDERS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN HAD HE STAYED AT PRESTON’S CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE AS AN OUTFIELD PLAYER.
The lad from Whittle-le-Woods had more than four years with North End playing in a variety of positions, but it was only after he pulled the gloves on for his local junior team that he found his true calling as a goalkeeper.
“What if I had stayed at Preston?” he asked as he prepared to return to Deepdale. “Would I have made it as a professional?
Stewart, now 31, has no regrets about switching to keeper at the age of 12. He was snapped up almost immediately by Blackburn played for England at junior level, had nine years with Bournemouth and is now The Glovers’ goalkeeping coach with the Glovers.Yet he still keeps an eye on his hometown club and gets a rare chance tonight to come back to where it all began, bringing his eight-year-old son Bradley who will be the Yeovil mascot.
“I enjoyed it when I was at Preston,” he said. “But at that time I was an outfield player. They tried me in a few different positions, but I think I was more of a central
midfield player because I could strike the ball with either foot.
“One day I just went in goal for a bit of fun and as soon as I put the gloves on I loved it. So I had to make a choice, try to stay at Preston as an outfield player or do what I did best with my local Sunday team. In fact I only had about two games in goal and Blackburn picked me up.
“I learned a lot there from keepers like Shay Given and Tim Flowers. I got international recognition early on and I don’t have a single regret about making the switch. But I do sometimes wonder ‘what if.’”
Had it not been for wretched luck with injuries, Stewart’s nine years with Bournemouth would have produced more than 179 appearances. After he was released in 2008 he went part-time, playing for Dorchester Town and then Welling United. But in January this year he was appointed as Yeovil’s goalkeeping coach and found himself registering again as a player: “Realistically I’m not going to be any club’s No 1 anymore. Those days are gone,” he said. “But I am fit enough and, I think, good enough to deputise if anything happens to our first choice keeper. We have got a lad in at present is a great young prospect and I’m happy to be helping him develop.”

BOTH SIDES WERE REDUCED TO TEN MEN IN THE FIRST HALF, GLENN LOOVENS GETTING HIS MARCHING ORDERS AFTER JUST TEN MINUTES FOR TRIPPING DAVID NUGENT, AND NUGENT FOLLOWING IN THE 35TH MINUTE FOR HIS SECOND YELLOW IN TWO MINUTES.
Patrick Agyemang opened the scoring just after the interval with a shot on the turn, but Michael Chopra levelled three minutes later, although Preston felt he had handled the ball as he raced through. Danny Pugh’s fi rst goal for Preston took the points in the 65th minute after a great cross from Chris Sedgwick. Neil Mellor, signed a week earlier, did not make the 16 that day. In fact he had to wait nearly fi ve months for his debut because of a knee problem.
