Serving Wishes

FWM: What is economic development?EC: Economic development is about creating the right conditions to attract and retain talent and capital.

FWM: Why is economic development important?EC: In decades past, it has been narrowly defined and focused on industrial growth, especially during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s when we had a growing national labor force. But now, economic development is focused on talent and finding people to engage in the workforce. It has become about education and communities that are open to newcomers. Communities are advancing the conversation about economic inclusion and taking a look at how people participate and contribute beyond their working lives.

FWM: What is the role of Greater Fort Wayne Inc.?EC: It is the local economic development organization for Allen County, the City of Fort Wayne and the City of New Haven. We work with local companies to assist with the issues they encounter when growing and expanding their organizations. The number one issue we hear from businesses is the need for skilled workers. We work to show the connection between a community’s quality of life and the ability to attract and retain its best and brightest.

FWM: What do you like best about your work?EC: Everything. But what I really like is working with the people in the community. I just can’t wait to see what we all can accomplish together. greaterfortwayneinc.com
