Message from the President
Welcome to 2020!
It is a special year for the VSWGA as we are 90 years old as an organization.ItallbeganwhenthefirstVermontWomen’sAmateur was held in 1930. As the organization grew, State Days started in 1955. The Senior Championship was added in 1966 and the Mid-Amateur Championship in 1996. Remember the founding women ran these events without computers! They were truly dedicated to women’s golf. The organization remains strong thanks to our members. Our State Days are fundamental - our club reps and volunteers highlight their home courses. Others contribute in so many ways: Pam Boyd - Website, Jen Farrington - Administration, Jen Steck - Major Tournament Chairandmanagerofthememberhandbook,CathyNeff - Rules Chair, Lauri Brown - Junior Golf, Nancy Myers - Pace of Play, Kathy Sikora - Communications, Dana Cassidy - State Day Chair, and Chris Johnson - Treasurer. Thanks to Dee Macey for designing our new logos and to Dayle Burditt for suggesting the VSWGA Green Mountain Challenge. I am grateful to the Board of Directors who keep us focused on our mission and make my job a pleasure. We have a lot planned for our 90th year. There is a new VSWGA logo and a special 90th commemorative logo which you will see throughout this year. You will be receiving member gifts to celebrate the 90th year. In the works is an anniversary video which will be put on our web site as soon as it is completed. As a way of celebrating, we are expanding the Fall Awards Classic with tee gifts and an invite to former members to join us for golf and/or lunch. We also have some new and updated initiatives for the coming year. This will be the inaugural year of the VSWGA Green Mountain Challenge. This is a challenge to each of our members to play every one of our great State Day Courses. More information will be coming soon. The Forward Tee Program was successful in 2019 and will expand to include 17 courses in 2020. Bring a Friend to State Day will be open to all State Day courses this year. The Junior Golf Program now includes free membership to the VSWGA and a discount for championship registration. Let’s make this the best year ever! Encourage your friends to join! Enjoy the great golf! Have Fun!

Junior GolfTheVSWGAhasajuniorgolfcommitteetocoordinateeffortstopromotethegame, especially among girls in Vermont. Money is raised by the Closest to the Pin contests at every State Day and is used to donate to the Vermont Golf Association Scholarship as well as various instructional programs throughout the state. Membership to the VSWGA is now free to all junior members, and discounted or free Amateur Championship fees are available. Please check our website under Junior golf for the latest on our programs.
HandicappingThe USGA Golf Handicap system has transitioned to the World Handicap System. There are some major changes involved. The Vermont Golf Association is responsible formaintaininghandicapsforallVermontgolfers, includingwomen.ItistheofficialVermont source for information, vtga.org. The VSWGA will have information and links to instructional videos and printed material on the new system, vswga.org.
Course RatingThe Vermont Golf Association is responsible for scheduling course ratings and for processing the information collected. VSWGA members work with the VGA to rate courses.
State & Regional Amateur ChampionshipsEvery year, the VSWGA organizes three major state championships: Amateur, Senior Amateur, and Mid-Amateur. Every three years, we host the annual Tri-State Championship, a match play tournament for teams from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Vermont will host Tri-States in 2020. Every six years, Vermont hosts the annual New England Women’s Golf Championship.
CommunicationsThe VSWGA has a committee to facilitate communications. Monthly emails are sent to inform the membership of invitational tournaments at our member clubs. These dates and applications will be available on our website. Please send information and applications to Kathy Sikora, [email protected]
State DaysVSWGA State Days are weekly one-day 18-hole stroke play events that bring members together for some friendly competition. In 2020, we have 51 State Day events scheduled beginning May 5th. There are 2-3 courses to choose from each Tuesday, with venues in northern, central and southern Vermont. We’ll end the season with a day of golf, food, and fun at our annual Fall Awards Classic at Lake Morey Country Club on September 22th.

State Day Rules1. VSWGA State Days are organized under the Rules of Golf set by the USGA and

The Club Rep will then put the complaint in writing and submit to the VSWGAforfurtherinvestigation.Allsuchcomplaintswillbeconfidential.Intheevent of improper behavior by a player at a Major Tournament, the Tournament Directorshouldbenotified.

Write No Card or NC beside the appropriate name on the scorecard. Submit the card after the round. The VSWGA will post an adjusted score to GHIN, using ESC, based on the number of holes played. State Day ScoresThe VSWGA will post ALL State Day Scores to GHIN using the World Handicapping System maximum strokes of net double bogey and designate each with “A” for an away game. Note that the score will be marked as away even if the State Day was at your home course.

The third infraction results in the “turtle” designation for an additional 8 weeks. A “turtle” prevents you and any golfer in your group from receiving a tee time before noon. Tips to Speed Up PlayPlaying at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simplyaboutbeingmoreefficientwithyourtime.Twominutessavedperholewillsave thirty-six minutes per round.
• Followtheflightofallteeshots, notjustyourown.• Play a provisional ball if you think your original ball might be lost or out
of bounds.• Keep up with the group in front of you. Your correct position on the course is
immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you.
• Before reaching your ball, take note of distance and think about club selection. Take 2 or 3 clubs to your ball. Be at your ball and ready to play when it is your turn.
• Study the line of your putt while others are preparing to putt out.• Record scores at the next tee, not at the green.• Pay attention to the location of your cart. Don’t leave it behind.• When sharing carts, don’t wait in the cart while your cartmate hits. You can do
as much early preparation for your turn as possible. This might include taking a couple of clubs and walking to your ball.
• Agree to play ready golf.• Occasionally a group falls way behind. This is apparent when there are one to two
open holes ahead of them. In these situations, the VSWGA board advises: 1.Theslowgroupshouldlookbackandoffertoletthewaitinggroupplay through. 2. The group immediately behind the slow group should contact the slow group and ask to play through.

State Day participants are reminded that when clubs host one of our events, it may inconveniencetheirmembersaswellascostthemadditionalmoneytostafftheclubfacilities to accommodate us.
We ask that players be mindful of the services provided for us, and ask you to:
• Consider eating lunch at the club.• Support the Pro Shop.• Wear appropriate attire - - no “short” shorts or tank tops. Many courses have more
