Whatare we doing

Charnwood Borough Council is aiming to reduce its carbon

footprint by 15% by 2020

Our activities currently produce 2,132 tonnes of

CO a year

We’re aiming to reduce that by 320 tonnes of

CO a year to 1,812 tonnes

A tonne of CO would fill a cube over eight metres high - six of

them would be just higher than the Carillon in Loughborough.

355 towers would equal the Council’s current carbon footprint

£Whyare we doing it

charnwood.gov.uk/2020carbonpledge

To help tackle global warming – it’s everyone’s

responsibility

To save public money being spent on energy bills

There’s a legal requirement - the Climate Change Act

requires local authorities to tackle carbon emissions

To encourage others to tackle carbon emissions

Howwill we reduce our carbon foot print

Using more LED lighting in our

buildings, car parks and sheltered

accommodation. LED lights are more

efficient and last longer

We believe we can reduce our carbon

footprints by an estimated 202 tonnes a

year by introducing more LED lighting,

saving £48,000 a year

Council staff are taking part in a scheme

to encourage energy saving such as by

making sure computers and lighting are

switched off overnight

We’re planning to invest £300,000 before

2020 to reduce our carbon footprint. The

investment will pay for itself in less than

four years thanks to lower energy bills

Howcan you help

charnwood.gov.uk/2020carbonpledge

Turn it off

Switching off appliances, rather than putting

them on standby, can help you save up to £80 a

year on your electricity bill

Careful in your kitchen

Use a bowl to wash up rather than a running tap

and save £30 a year in energy bills

Only fill the kettle with the amount of water that

you need and save around £7 a year

You can play your part by taking some simple energy saving measures yourself

Page 8: 2020 Carbon Pledge

Take control of your heating

Even turning down your room

thermostat by just one degree can save

between £85 and £90 a year

Switch to LEDs

If the average household replaced all of

their remaining old-fashioned bulbs with

CFLs, and all of their halogens with LEDs, it

would cost about £100 and save about £35

a year on bills

Turn off lights

Switching a light off for just a few seconds

will save more energy than it takes for the

light to start up again, regardless of the type

of light. This will save you around £15 on

your annual energy bills

Get a draught excluder

DIY draught-proofing of windows, doors

and blocking cracks in floors and skirting

boards can cost around £200, but can

save up to £25 to £35 a year on energy bills
