The Sacrament of Penance (First Reconciliation/Confession)

will be held over two evenings Tuesday19th&Wednesday20thNovember2019. There will be extra priest’s available & parishioners are invited to take the opportunity to come along for this Sacrament. St Mark’s Church at 7.00pm

The days have certainly been “blazing like an oven’ as in the first

reading for this Sunday and the “nations will rise up against nation,

and kingdom against kingdom” it says in this Sunday Gospel. These

are all end of the world predictions which could have applied to

many times in the history of the world. We are coming to the end

of the Churches liturgical year and the Church takes this

opportunity to remind us of things eternal and of the final

judgment we will all have to face at the end of time. Next Sunday is

the Solemnity of Christ the King when this will be portrayed even

more dramatically.

This Sunday we are reminded to keep focused on Jesus and not to

be deceived by imposters. Luke is speaking to a persecuted Church

of his day that faced denunciation, suppression, violent attacks and

betrayal from within. Through all this the community is to remain

resolute and confident in the love of God and the Gospel ends this

with “By your perseverance you will secure your lives”.

It is very difficult to persevere when all things in life seem hopeless,

confused and impossible. When Jesus faced the Cross and death,

he placed his confidence and trust in his loving Father, and this of

course led to the Resurrection and new life.

To persevere we need to have a strong and deep relationship with

God and to speak to God in prayer every day. In my life prayer has

been the one thing that has helped me in the most difficult times.

Sometimes the prayer is one of surrender, sometimes of pleading

and desperation but mostly of thanks and of praise for all God has

done for me. When we turn to God in honesty and openness it is

incredible how our prayers are answered. Sometimes in the most

surprising ways and through the most surprising people. When we

try to do “it”, life, on our own we always seem to fail but when we

turn to God it is surprising what happens.

This week we celebrate the Sacrament of Penance (First

Reconciliation | Confession) with many parishioners for the first

time. Everyone is invited to this opportunity to celebrate the

forgiveness and mercy of God on Tuesday and Wednesday evening

from 7-8pm there will be another priest available from outside our

community as well as Fr Denis and myself. In the busyness of this

season and time of year it is good to take stock, reflect and pray,

and get our own spiritual house in order for the end of the year.

My thanks to all who assisted with the Pastoral Visitation of the

Parish by Bishop Terry Brady last weekend. He made himself

available to anyone who wished to speak to him. His words were

encouraging and challenging.

In other years: St Elizabeth of Hungary (1207 - 1231) She was a daughter of the King of Hungary. She was given in

marriage to Ludwig, the Landgrave of Thuringia, by whom she had three children. She frequently meditated on heavenly things

and when her husband died she embraced poverty and built a hospice in which she cared for the sick herself.

The SACRAMENTALITY OF THE WORD can be understood by analogy with the real presence of Christ under the appearances of the consecrated bread and wine. By approaching the altar and partaking in the Eucharistic banquet we truly share in the Body and Blood of Christ. The proclamation of God’s word at the celebration entails an acknowledgement that Christ himself is present, that he speaks to us, and that he wishes to be heard. Saint Jerome speaks of the way we ought to approach both the Eucharist and the word of God: ’ We are reading the sacred Scriptures. For me, the Gospel is the Body of Christ; for me, the holy Scriptures are his teaching. And when he says: whoever does not eat my flesh and drink my blood (Jn6:53), even through these words can also be understood of the Eucharist, Christ’s Body and Blood are really the word of Scripture, God’s teaching. When we approach the Eucharist, if a crumb falls to the ground we are troubled. Yet when we are listening to the Word of God, and God’s Word and Christ’s flesh and Blood are being poured into our ears we pay no heed, what great peril should we not feel?”. Christ, truly present under the species of bread and wine, is analogously present in the word proclaimed in the liturgy. VerbumDomini(2010)
