Message from theRegion 2 Mentor

Welcome to our 2019 Spring Region 2 Leadership Institute Meeting (LIM) !

It is exciting to have everyone together again, as well as the opportunity to

meet our new leaders. We are fortunate to be able to have this type of

event and appreciative of PMI Manitoba Chapter, our host chapter, for all

their efforts in organizing this Spring’s event.

The R2 Spring LIM is the premier event that brings together our Region’s 21

PMI Chapters with the opportunity to build relationships and collaborate

with fellow chapter leaders. There are three guiding principles to this event: Share your

experiences, learn from others, and build a network of connections you can leverage throughout

your chapter volunteering and professional career.

For our 1st time attendees, I will share my personal story, over a decade ago, as a chapter director

attending my first Region 2 meeting. Although a member for many years, I was a new volunteer

director and this was my first time meeting leaders from other chapters. What astonished me

was the quality of the collaboration and openness of leaders in sharing their program successes.

Although I was volunteering for a large chapter, it became clear that the smaller chapters had

exciting and innovative programs. Like a kid in a candy shop, I walked away with over a dozen

new program concepts to take back to my chapter. And proud to say we launched at least half of

those programs in our chapter. And to this day I still keep touch with those leaders.

I hope you find similar value in this year’s event!

Thanks,

Jim Karthan

Fun Facts about Winnipegand Manitoba

Manitoba was brought into Canada as a province in 1870.

Winnie-the-Pooh is named after the city of Winnipeg.

Winnipeg is the 7-Eleven Slurpee capital of the world.

Winnipeg has both the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada (42 degrees Celsius), and the lowest ever (-47 degrees Celsius).

The Manitoba Legislative Building, seat to the Manitoba government, is topped by a 17 foot golden statue known as “The Golden Boy”. He has been standing suspended on top of the legislative dome since 1920. The choice of a fully nude statue in a city known for its long cold winters, seems a somewhat humorous choice to crown the governmental seat.

Winnipeg’s train station was designed by the same architects who designed New York City’s Union Station.

On the longest day of the year the sun rises at 5:20 AM and sets at 9:41 PM.

Residents of Churchill, Manitoba are asked to leave their car doors unlocked in case their neighbours need somewhere to escape from a polar bear.

Manitoba has more curling clubs than Ontario and Quebec combined.

The Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg has cranked out more than 55 billion coins for 75 countries around the world.
