    Dear Friends,

We have a big problem in our country – we are divided by language and cultural barriers. With your support, Intercambio has been a leader in providing a simple, scalable, game-changing solution to this problem in Longmont, Lafayette and Boulder. It is sought after by community groups around the country.

English classes for adults address a basic human need – the ability to communicate. When done the “Intercambio Way”, they also engage volunteer teachers and immigrants, sparking mutual learning and building bridges that meaningfully connect people, despite cultural barriers. For English language learners and the wider community, the “Intercambio Way” creates:

Because of your contribution, over the years Intercambio has connected over 15,000 students and volunteer teachers in Boulder County. We’ve created an exciting national network of 600 small to mid-size community-based organizations that we support with curriculum, consulting and training. We’ve listened and learned that this network needs LOTS of support to meet the huge unmet demands for language and integration in their communities. We have seen how our model can be successful in all types of communities - those that are similar and those that are very different from our own.

Intercambio will continue evolving to create innovative, equitable approaches, crossing racial and linguistic boundaries to build lasting social change and lift lives. Thank you for joining us in this nation-wide social change movement.

    With gratitude,

    • Confidence to communicate

    • Connections across cultural barriers

    • Increased job and school success

    • Integrated and welcoming communities

    • Family financial sustainability

    4

  • Thanks to your investment in Intercambio, our team worked intensely this year to develop the new English curriculum, Confidence and Connections™. The curriculum provides:

•User-friendly resources and training based on proven learning theories made simple to maximize access.

•Lessons to prepare all participants for mutual learning and cultural exchange, creating a gateway for meaningful relationships.

•A framework for welcoming, safe learning environments to minimize fear and celebrate success.

“The vision for the new English curriculum was to spark conversations that enable students and teachers to share

    experiences and perspectives.

NEW ESL Curriculum, Confidence and Connections™

  • At its core, Intercambio is about much more than learning and teaching English. The simple idea of connecting the needs of our students with the desire of our volunteer teachers opens the door for sharing languages, cultures and friendships.

Our students find support, build confidence and form friendships along with language skills. Our volunteers build empathy and discover satisfaction and new friendship along the way. What begins as a chance to practice English often grows into uplifting relationships for both.

  • Lais, Benjamín and Lois

Lois has taught with Intercambio for since 2015. In that time she has had the chance to work with and get to know many students from across the world. Lois states that the heart of her teaching experience is connection. “The relationship that the students create with one another is so powerful and so beautiful to watch.”

The joy that Lois receives from teaching is mirrored in her students. Because of Intercambio, Lais, an Intercambio student from Brazil, is building connections through her classes with Intercambio. “I am writing new pages in my life.” Lois, Intercambio volunteer teacher

“We are better as the sum of our extraordinarily diverse parts.

  • Success for one student builds confidence opening doors of opportunity for that individual. For parents, learning English and building connections can empower them to support their children’s education, get a better job, and alter the future of the next generation. This in turn creates a cycle of growth within their family and community.

first and best teacher.” -British A. Robinson, CEO Barbara Bush

  • Lisa & Gabriela

Intercambio’s work not only builds English language skills, but also growth in confidence. Gabriela is a single mother raising two young children, and this last year has worked full-time as an intern for the Longmont Police Department.

Through her English classes with Intercambio she has grown in her confidence with the language. She says, “I have learned so much through Intercambio classes. I can help my children [in kindergarten and third grade] with their homework, and their reading skills. Three years ago I was very depressed and suicidal. Now I’m ready to take on the world!”

“I’m ready to take on the world!

  • Hundreds of groups across the country are beacons of light for their communities, teaching English the Intercambio Way.

Our materials and trainings are used in refugee resettlement programs, churches, schools, libraries and community groups. In addition to using our connection-building curriculum, our partners have access to guidance, support, and training in order to implement the most effective techniques in teaching adult ESL.

  • Founded in 2003, Nuestra Casa serves immigrants and their families in the Lower Yakima Valley region of Washington. The nonprofit organization addresses the lack of access to basic education for adult immigrants. Last year, Nuestra Casa’s ESL program registered 312 adults.

After testing different ESL materials, Nuestra Casa began using Intercambio’s curriculum in 2018. Utilizing Intercambio’s training webinars, affordable student books, and easy-to-follow teacher books, they found that the Intercambio program provided the best results for their students.

Nuestra Casa supports their students with more than ESL classes. Like Intercambio, they enable their community to create meaningful connections and build cultural awareness. “We get our community partners and businesses involved in several activities including a role play called “Let’s Talk!” where community leaders help our students practice English in different scenarios. We also take our students on field trips in our community to practice their newly acquired English skills.”

Intercambio is proud to partner with organizations across the country like Nuestra Casa.

“I love intercambio because it gives us the opportunity to teach our students in interactive

ways. It allows them to feel confident, respected, and helps them feel like they are an important

  • Each term, one-time volunteers join with students in small groups for dialog and English practice. These Community Conversations events replace regular lessons for one class per term.
