September 2019

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe that Lighthouse Community Public Schools has grown from serving 90 students in a downtown Oakland storefront in 2002, to serving 1400 students across two East Oakland campuses in 2019.

Over these past 18 years, change has been a constant, but one thing that has not wavered is your support and belief in the potential of our students.

Lighthouse Community Public Schools is proud to be a force in the transformation of Oakland through an unrelenting commitment to prepare students for college and career. Together — our families, students, staff, and YOU — are part of a landscape of great success.

So what sets LCPS apart from other organizations like us? The core values that guide our work are alive in everything we do:

Community

I’m honored to be working alongside you as we continue to guide our students to a bright future. As you read the following pages of this report, you’ll see the impact of your generosity of time and treasure — from acquiring a new K-12 campus for Lodestar to seeing over 95% of LCPS students making plans to attend 2- and 4-year colleges.

Thank you for walking this path with Lighthouse to make a brighter world for our children. I can’t wait to see what we will achieve in the next year together!

With love,

Jenna Stauffer,Founder, CEO, & Proud LCPS Parent

Annual Report 2019

Vanessa and Evelyn Zamora are part of the first Lighthouse class of kindergartners. Evelyn graduated from UCLA in 2019 and Vanessa will graduate from UC Berkeley in 2020.

Lighthouse graduates enroll in college at higher rates than students of the same demographic enrolled in Oakland Unified School District, Alameda County, and across California.

“Because of Lighthouse, my kids are believing that they can be anything they want to be. They see themselves going to college.”

Connie Williams, Lighthouse Parent

You help send Lighthouse students to college.

Check out this two-minute highlight video of Declaration Day, where Lighthouse seniors announce their plans after high school graduation.

You guided Lodestar to a new home.

“Lodestar not only educates our children’s minds, but through the Core Values, Lodestar also educates their hearts — essential for the development of successful and responsible adults.” Vicky Gowans, Lodestar parent

The Lodestar community came together at the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate Lodestar’s new campus.

With your love and support, Lodestar officially moved into its permanent home in East Oakland in the fall of 2018 — this is a huge feat for a new charter school! With an innovative model that puts students at the center of their own learning, Lodestar is paving the way in public school models, serving students in grades K-8. The new Lodestar high school will open on the same campus in Fall 2020. Watch this one-minute video of the Lodestar Ribbon Cutting ceremony.

Gifts from generous friends and partnerships with Pacific Charter School Development, First Republic Bank, the Rogers Family Foundation and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation have made The Raised in Oakland Capital Campaign a success. This community has supported the renovation of existing buildings and the start of new construction for Lodestar High School.

Lodestar’s four acres in the Sobrante Park neighborhood of East Oakland are now a bustling K-8 campus, serving over 600 students. As of August 2019, the high school building is under construction and playgrounds are on their way. As we near the end of this project, your thoughtful gifts will help Lodestar offer a beautiful campus for students in grades K-12 to thrive.
