A MESSAGE FROM PASCO HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL – RAÚL SITAL

Dear Pasco School District Families, This course guidebook is designed to assist students in the foundational pieces of their educational careers. We strongly encourage all students to pursue classes in their areas of interest that will be supported by a strong foundation in the core academic areas of Math, Science and English. The solid foundation built from these core academic areas will assist students to become successful in their post-high school endeavors as well as gain experience in their special area of interests.

High school is not only about academics, but also provides students opportunities to explore interests in extracurricular activities and clubs. Students are encouraged to participate in these clubs and activities in order to gain a full high school experience. Research shows that students who are involved in extracurricular activities earn higher grades and develop strong time management skills.

The staff at Pasco High is here to help foster the skills needed to support the decision-making process. Our goal is to surround students with staff who exhibit deep levels of care, understand-ing and commitment in creating innovative and nurturing educational environments. To achieve this goal, we have created Intervention Teams in our Student Services Center (SSC) consisting of an Administrator, Counselor and Student Achievement Specialist for each student.

The Intervention Teams within the Student Services Center work as advocates for students to help them work towards academic and personal achievement, as well as assisting them to excel inside and outside of the classroom. SSC’s goal is to teach students skills and strategies that will lead to success at Pasco High School and beyond. The doors of Student Services are open to you. We encourage you and your student to partner with SSC and your Intervention Team members during your student’s journey into adulthood.

Planning for the present and the future is the key to all success. With the ever-changing graduation requirements and state assessments, it is very important that parents be actively involved through-out the course selection process. When you have questions or concerns regarding your student’s needs at Pasco High School, please feel free to visit our Student Services Center (509-547-5581 ext. 3801). Sincerely,

Rau l Sital

GENERAL ACADEMIC INFORMATION INFORMATION FOR ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Cohort Calculation Grade level is based strictly on the first time a student enters the 9th grade. The grade level will advance with each academic school year, regardless of credits earned. Credit and state assessment requirements must be met in order to receive a high school diploma.

Late Enrollment Students who enroll after the first two weeks of the trimester may not be able to secure core (graduation) classes. Incoming students with transfer grades have a higher probability of matching all their classes and securing their credits. Transfer students or late arrival students who enter after the first two weeks without grades will be required to negotiate a “Late Enrollment Contract” with all teachers to develop a plan that may or may not allow for credit acquisition.

Schedule Change Procedure Schedules are student-driven and parent-supported. Any change in a student’s schedule is disruptive to the student’s learning process. Students requesting a schedule change after the completion of the first week of the trimester must meet with the teacher, his or her counselor and an administrator. Schedule changes will be considered for academic purposes only and not based on specific teacher requests, specific lunch hour requests, etc. Students who withdraw from a class after 20 days will receive a “W” on their official transcript for that course.

GRADING

Grade Point Average (GPA) (1) Each student’s “grade point average” shall be the sum of the point values, as defined in WAC 392-415-050, of all the marks/grades received for all

courses attempted divided by the sum of the credits for all courses attempted. (2) The grade point value shall be rounded by multiplying the numerical value of the mark/grade earned by the number of credits assigned to the course. (3) Grade point averages shall be calculated to two decimal places and reported for each trimester or other term and for the cumulative credits earned for

all courses attempted in high school. (4) All marks/grades for all courses taken shall be included in the calculation of grade point averages except for:

(a) Non-numerical marks/grades shall be excluded from the calculation of grade point averages; and (b) Only the highest mark/grade earned for a class/course taken more than once to improve a mark/grade shall be included in the calculations. This exception shall not apply to recurring courses. Recurring courses are those taken by a student to further develop their understanding and skills in the subject (e.g., journalism, advanced art or drama, concert band, etc.), or is taken by the student more than once to satisfy different credit requirements (e.g., advanced drama taken three times to meet an elective requirement, an art requirement and the occupational education requirement). (c) Credits attempted for courses taken more than once to improve a grade/mark may count only once toward the number of credits required. (d) Credits attempted for courses taken more than once to improve a grade may count toward the number of credits required for graduation on the condition that the letter grades earned for all attempts are included in the calculation of the student’s grade point average. Districts and schools shall not convert letter grades to non-numerical grades/marks for the purpose of this subsection.

Prerequisites Prerequisites for a class are listed in the course description. Students will need to have successfully completed the required fundamental courses prior to enrolling in their desired course or must receive teacher approval to enroll.

Pass / No Credit Each student has the option of taking one core or elective class each semester on a pass / no credit basis. Grades earned under this agreement are either “P” for passing or “NC” for no credit. The “P” grade counts as a credit toward graduation, but has no point value when computing the GPA (grade point average). A student, with parent approval, must request, in writing, this grading method. This request must be approved by the teacher and counselor. If ap-proved, the student will be graded using pass / no credit for the semester. Request forms are located in Student Services.

Incomplete “I” indicates some portion of the course work must be completed before a final grade can be determined. The student must complete the work within the two (2) weeks following quarter/semester grading period or receive an “F” grade. If the teacher does not submit the final grade, the “I” becomes an “F.” A teacher must obtain administrative approval for students who require longer than two (2) weeks to submit the final course work due to extenuating circumstances.

Credit / Grade for Repeated Courses Any course may be repeated for the purpose of improving the grade. If a course is repeated to improve the grade, only the highest grade will be included in calculating the grade point average pursuant to WAC 392-415-055. However, the grade originally earned will still remain on the student’s transcript. If credit for both attempts of the course is desired, both grades must be factored into the GPA calculation. See WAC 392-415-055(4)(c)(d) and WAC 392-415-070. Paperwork to repeat an academic course for grade improvement requires the counselor, department chair, parent/guardian, and administrator signatures.

Repeating Recurring Courses Recurring classes are those that may be repeated to further develop understanding and skills, when no higher level course exists in this specific area (e.g., journalism, yearbook, band, choir and/or weight training, etc.) There are no special requirements for repeating a recurring course.

Credit for Military Basic Training Credit will be awarded for military basic training programs upon receipt of the Certificate of Completion. Students/recruiters must present proof of the summer experience to the registrar to receive 0.5 Fitness credit and 0.5 Occupational credits.

GENERAL ACADEMIC INFORMATION (continued) DEAN’S LIST REQUIREMENT

The Dean’s List at Pasco High School is a category of students who achieve high grades during their high school career. Students who maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.7 or better throughout his/her high school career will be considered on the Dean’s List.

RUNNING START

Running Start offers academically capable juniors and seniors an opportunity to earn college credits while completing high school requirements at Columbia Basin Community College (CBC) or Washington State University (WSU) Tri-Cities. If students meet the Running Start entrance requirements, their tuition will be paid. However, Pasco High seniors must complete all high school graduation requirements by the end of winter quarter (CBC) or spring semester (WSU) in order to participate in their graduation ceremony. Students are responsible for their own transportation, school fees, books and class-room materials. The following qualifications must be met in order to participate in Running Start:

TRI-TECH

Tri-Tech Skills Center offers juniors and seniors an opportunity to get a head start on a career and after high school training. Students learn skills to be successful in entry-level jobs while at the same time earning high school credits. In addition most programs offer college credit through the Tech Prep system. Students who successfully complete a course can earn up to 1.5 occupational and/or elective credits each semester. Some programs offer English, math, science and/or fine arts equivalency credits for successful completion of the 2nd consecutive semester in the same program. Bus transportation is provided to Tri-Tech, but not for cosmetology taught at Victoria’s Academy in Kennewick. Students planning to enroll in a Tri-Tech course must meet with their counselor to complete an application form to ensure that there are openings in the program. There are a limited number of openings at Tri-Tech each semester available to Pasco High School students. Students who enroll early will have a better chance of being accepted into a program. Students who wish to return to Tri-Tech for a second year must receive at least a “B” their first year and have instructor approval.

For more detailed program information, refer to the complete Tri-Tech Skills Center catalog available in the Counseling Office, at Tri-Tech Skills Center or online at http://school.ksd.org/tritech/

COLLEGE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL

College in the High School programs provide college level academic courses within the high school setting for qualified high school students. College in the High School programs are established through a contract between Pasco High School and higher education institutions. Together, Pasco High and higher education institutions define the criteria for student eligibility. Local contracts clarify the parameters in which students will participate in College in the High School classes and what dual enrollment opportunities will be available. In order for coursework to be recorded for academic credit, programs and students must adhere to the following guidelines:

• High school students enrolled in College in the High School are officially enrolled at a partner college and must meet that college’s course requirements and pre-requisites.

• For students enrolled in College in the High School, regular college/university policies and regulations regarding student performance and classroom behavior shall apply. High school policies will apply for activities outside the College in the High School classroom.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Advanced Placement (AP) classes offer rigorous and enriching course loads, geared toward providing highly motivated students advanced learning opportunities and preparing these students for the AP Exam. Pasco High School is committed to providing opportunities that allow all students to discover their full academic potential, through our open enrollment philosophy. AP courses are at the college level with rigorous course work requirements that may require hours of homework outside the classroom including summer assignments. Through Pasco High School’s AP college-level courses and exams, students have the opportunity to earn college credit and be distinguished in the college admissions process. Students will take the AP exam in May with the possibility of earning college credits upon scoring a 3 or higher on the exam. All students enrolling in an AP class must sign and return an AP contract prior to completing enrollment. AP students must pick up a syllabus and summer assignments before the current school year is completed. These can be picked up in the Library between June 4-8, 2018. Once a student is enrolled in an AP course, he or she has committed to completing a full semester of the class. After a semester, if the student and family desire to drop the class, he or she must follow the process outlined below:

• A conference will be held with the AP class teacher, student’s counselor, AP Department Chair, an administrator, the student, and a parent/guardian.

• All must agree on the decision of dropping the course and must sign the AP Course Drop Form.

POST-HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION

4-Year College/University Admissions Requirements To ensure that students entering Washington’s public four-year colleges and universities have a strong academic foundation and are prepared to succeed in college, all freshman applicants including Running Start students, must have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and are required to complete a minimum level of preparation in six subject areas known as College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADR). Meeting minimum CADR requirements does not ensure admission to a particular college or university. These are minimum requirements and it is strongly recommended that students exceed these requirements. Students are required to take a minimum of three credits of CADR courses each year of high school, including their senior year. For additional information on college admission requirements, please contact Student Services. Note: This is provided as a guide and is subject to change.

English Language Arts .................................................................................................................................................................................. 4.0 credits Four credits of English language arts are required. Must include three credits of college preparatory coursework, including literature and composition (may include Bridge to College English). One credit of elective English may be included.

Mathematics..................................................................................................................................................................................................... 3.0 credits Three credits of mathematics are required. These credits must include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, or higher level mathematics.

Senior-Year Mathematics – Based Quantitative Course .................................................................................................................... 1.0 credit Students are required to take a math-based quantitative course during their senior year. Examples of a math-based quantitative course include additional math (such as Bridge to College Mathematics or statistics), algebra-based science, math-based career and technical courses, or AP computer science. Students who have completed math beyond Algebra II or Integrated Math III, prior to the senior year, are exempt from this requirement. Exception: Completion of higher level math, e.g., Pre-Calculus, Math Analysis, Calculus, prior to the senior year exempts student from the senior year quantitative course requirement.

Science (2 Credits, 3 Credits for students entering college in fall of 2021) ................................................................... 2.0 – 3.0 credits Two credits of science are required. Both credits must be earned in lab courses, including one algebra-based course and one course in biology, chemistry or physics. A single course may meet multiple requirements. For example, a biology, chemistry or physics course may also be lab-based. Note: Three credits are required beginning with students entering college in fall of 2021. The third credit does not need to be lab-based. Note: Western Washington University specifies that one credit must be an algebra-based chemistry or physics course.

Social Sciences................................................................................................................................................................................................. 3.0 credits Three credits of social sciences are required. These credits must be earned in history or any of the social sciences. Examples include anthropology, contemporary world problems, economics, geography, government, political science, psychology, or sociology.

World Languages ........................................................................................................................................................................................... 2.0 credits Two credits of the same world language are required. Examples include Spanish, French, Japanese, American Sign Language, and American Indian languages. Additional World Language coursework is encouraged. Some institutions may require three credits to meet college graduation requirements.

Arts (1 Credit, 2 Credits for students entering college in fall of 2021) ........................................................................... 1.0 – 2.0 credits One credit of art is required. This credit must be earned in fine, visual, or performing arts. Substitution of one credit from another CADR subject area is allowed. However, some institutions limit the waiver; students should check with the admissions offices at the institutions to which they plan to apply. Note: The University of Washington and Western Washington University specify one-half credit in fine, visual or performing arts. The other half may be in the arts or in an academic elective.

.

How do I enroll in iPAL?

1. Visit or make an appointment with your high school counselor. 2. Meet with your counselor and a parent to discuss enrollment. 3. Counselor will send referral to iPAL. 4. iPAL will call and schedule an enrollment meeting with parent and student. 5. Once enrolled, you will be required to attend the lab weekly plus work from home.

Is Online Learning Right for Me as a Student? The following qualities are good indicators of student success in online courses. Although the lack of one or two does not necessarily mean you won't succeed, you may want to talk with your school Counselor about what support will help you be successful. See below for iPAL Online Offerings. • Self-aware and informed. Understand what kind of learner you are and what online learning is like to make a good

decision about your course. It is still largely text-based, so a social or hands-on learner will need to keep that in mind. • Self-motivated. Able to set and reach goals on your own. Inquisitive and interested in taking the course online. • Reading skills. Enjoy reading or are motivated to read on the given topic. Online students read lessons, read web

resources for research, and read teacher responses. • Writing skills. Enjoy writing or are motivated to write on the given topic. Writing is the basic means of completing

online assignments and interacting with the teacher and other students. • Independent learner. Able to read and follow directions without frequent teacher assistance. Teacher response is

timely but not immediate. • Organized. Able to plan, prioritize, and organize tasks and assignments. Able to set a schedule and meet deadlines. • Problem solver. Do not give up easily in the face of a challenge. Resourceful and able to find solutions to questions on

your own. Know when to seek help and do so. • Active Participant. Comfortable "sitting in the front row." Online learning is active and requires regular interaction

with your teacher. • Time availability. Able to participate in the course along with your other activities. Online courses require at least as

much time as a regular classroom course. • Computer access and skills. Have access to a reliable computer with an internet connection. Possess basic computer

skills to use email, navigate websites, and manage files.
