From the PresidentBy Jim Frakes Just as we thought spring was here, the rains and cold weather came and showed us who is boss. Not the greatest start to the Healey Driving season, but it’s still on its way. First up is Springthing in Lebanon, KY sponsored by the BlueGrass Club. If you plan on going and want to caravan, call me or leave a message on my cell (317-697-6441). Sue and I plan to leave on Thursday likely by noon for a leisurely drive down. The Conclave 2018 Host Committee should have several items to report at the meeting and hope you can attend. The trio travels on Thursday May 4th back to the area for another look at several venues that still are undecided. A look at a probable Theme logo and possibly the Regalia logo may be approved and revealed. Normal Healey club business will still take precedence over Conclave business, so bring your ideas for any summer drives, events to attend, news about Healey Families, etc.

  • Cooper, Two time Daytona 24 hour race winner Elliott Forbes Robinson and others. Most notably, he was one of the drivers, along with Shelby, during the Healey Assault on the Salt, at Bonneville in their very successful attempts at setting Salt Flat speed records in the 1950’s. We, Bob and Melanie Haskell and myself got the chance to meet Roy during the Bonneville Healey attempt to recreate the 1950’s event.

CARS/PARTS FOR SALE or WANTED TO BUY(Please send Jim Frakes or Steve Halleck any news of cars/parts that are for sale.)

I received this email from Neal last week. If anyone has BJ8 parts they want to pass on, please contact him.

I am restoring a 1966 BJ8 and just bought some parts from a fellow in Evansville, IN. I have hired a trucking firm to deliver the parts from Indiana to my home in Massachusetts. Trucker wants to transport in a week or so. Wondering if you have any parts for sale. In particular I am looking for a factory hardtop (any condition), front shroud, seats (any condition) and a used superstructure because I purchased a new frame and my rear superstructure is in very bad shape. I am also looking for various other parts.

  • Miscellaneous MeanderingsBy Steve HalleckWith some of the nice weather we had this month (before the monsoons started) I’ve tried to make some of the early season car shows / get-togethers. I took the Bugeye to Cars and Coffee at the Speedway this month. It was a beautiful day and they had a very large turnout, requiring the use of an overflow parking area. I had the only LBC at the show – it got a lot of attention. The following week at Gator Motorsport there were a few LBCs, including a nice 100M. I also cruised through the early arrivals at the Fortville Wed get together, but looking at the approaching clouds, decided to make a run back to the garage before the heavens opened up! It’s fun taking an LBC to these mainly muscle car / historic Detroit iron events, as most people don’t have a clue what the car is. (I was asked last week if the Sprite was a Corvette or a Chevette!) While some of the folks with 10 times the horsepower may not care about these cars, a lot of others are interested in learning about them. Attending these events and talking the cars up to the attendees may give us a good opportunity to introduce our cars to a younger generation.

Interesting labels I found when re-wiring the Bugeye last year. Apparently the previous owner didn’t know what the windscreen washer knob was.

On November 14, 1896, the first London to Brighton Run was held in England to celebrate raising thespeed limit from 4 to 14 mph. IBCU celebrates the 121st anniversary of this event with its annual rally/tour across Indiana, for all British cars.Participants will enjoy an approximate 100 mile drive along some interesting roads in central Indiana, answering challenging questions and taking photos along the way. BONUS: DINNER & A MOVIE BEFORE THE 2017 LONDON to BRIGHTON RUNTHURSDAY, JULY 13, 2017As an added bonus this year, Hoosier MG’s is sponsoring a showing of the movie “Genevieve” at the Royal Theater in Danville Indiana. In this upbeat British comedy, two friends enter an antique car rally (The London to Brighton Run). Alan McKim (John Gregson) drives his beloved 1904 automobile, named Genevieve, while Ambrose Cleverhouse (Kenneth More) takes his vintage Spyker car. Alan and Ambrose bring their wives along for the wild ride from London to Brighton, and the trek soon turns fiercely competitive, each driver devising clever ways to sabotage the other in the hopes of winning the race.

Interested in dinner before the movie? Three local restaurants (Diesels, Frank’s Place, Mayberry Café) have a special offer of a free (non-alcoholic) drink with the purchase of a dinner entrée at their establishment. Just show proof of British car ownership and you’re in.

This showing is FREE to all British car owners, regardless of whether you plan on running in the rally or not. Just show proof of British car ownership (running or not) at the door. As a bonus, each attendee will get a free Jr. Combo (Popcorn, Drink, Candy, Handy Tray) courtesy of IBCU, including one free refill on drink and popcorn! ------An interesting history tour sent in by Roy: Indianapolis Automotive Driving TourIndianapolis was a major producer of automobiles and taxicabs from 1897 to 1937. The Circle City, with 65 different vehicles manufactured here, ranks second to Cleveland’s 82as Detroit’s chief rival for the title of the Nation’s auto capital.

Today, we can only enjoy their handy work at museums or collector car meets, but manyautomotive industry landmarks still stand. Take your own driving tour around the Circle City with this list of 20 automotive-related sites compiled by Dennis Horvath, a local author and automotive history enthusiast. Read more from Dennis at cruise-in.com.
