Men’s Basketball NotesScouting CampbellsvilleThe Tigers were 15-1 entering January, but have lost their last three games, all in Mid-South Conference play. Most recently Cam-bellsville lost at Life 82-64 on Saturday. Four Tigers score in double figures, starting with Hagan Tyler and hid 14.6 ppg while also making 54 3s at over 43 percent. Led by Tyler, the Tigers rank fifth in the NAIA with 200 makes from deep and they are also sixth in blocks (88) and eighth is assists (340).

Stats to Watch UPIKE is 15-1 when it leads the game at halftime with the lone loss coming on Saturday at Lindsey Wilson in a game it led 39-34 at the break. The Bears are a perfect 14-0 when shooting better than an opponent from the field and 10-0 when scoring 90+ points, a mark that gets difficult in conference play.

Leslie Named to Bevo Francis Watch ListDarrion Leslie, who already registered the school’s second recorded triple-double this season, is on pace to repeat as an All-American and this week was named to the Bevo Francis Award watchlist, an honor for the nation’s best small-college player. The senior is av-eraging 13.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Leslie has led UPIKE in assists 11 times this season, seven more times that his next teammate.

MSC Dominates the NAIA Top-25 PollNo other conference is represented in the NAIA top-25 poll like the Mid-South. Starting near the top, Lindsey Wilson is ranked second, followed by Georgetown tied for fifth. The Bears are next in line at No. 12, six spots below the last poll, however, UPIKE’s 63 straight weeks in the top 25 leads active NAIA members. Other ranked MSC teams include No. 18 Cumberlands and No. 25 Life. Campbellsville dropped out of the poll, but is still receiving votes.

UPIKE Among National Statistics Leaders The Bears rank in the top 10 in 15 different statistical categories, including ranking third in scoring defense (63.6) and fourth in field-goal percentage defense (37.2). UPIKE’s +30.7 scoring margin and its 53.4 percent shooting from the field are both second nationally.

Kelly Wells on the Home Court, When Scoring 90Kelly Wells, in his 12th season at UPIKE, is 177-26 at home and when his teams score at least 90 points his record is 130-7. Last season, Wells became the winningest coach in school history, a mark he has only added to at 275-99. Among active NAIA head coaches, Wells ranked 22nd in wins heading into the 2017-18 sea-son.

UPIKE Looks to Build on Expo Center Success Since 2013, UPIKE has posted an 82-5 record inside the East Ky. Expo Center.

WellsKelly Wells is in his 12th season as the head coach of the UPIKE men’s basketball team in 2017-18. Wells currently holds a 275-99 record at UPIKE, making him the all-time winningest coach at the school. Wells’ Bears won the 2011 NAIA National Championship and the Morehead, Ky., native was named the NAIA Coach of the Year following that championship season.

UPIKE has put together 10 20-win seasons in the last 11 under Wells’ guidance. Included in that run are the program’s first two 30-win campaigns, coming in 2010-11 and 2013-14. Last season, the Bears finished 28-8 overall and reached their sixth NAIA National Tournament with Wells where they advanced to the quarterfinals.

The Bears’ 31 wins registered during the 2013-14 campaign are the most in program history, while the 17 Mid-South Conference wins that season are a league record as well.

At UPIKE, Wells has coached 21 NAIA All-Americans, including two NAIA Players of the Year in Bruce Reed in 2014 and Kenny Manigault in 2015. That makes 21 of the program’s 26 total All-Americans having played under Wells. There have also been 29 All Mid-South Conference selections to play for wells, including two conference players of the year and one freshman of the year. This is Wells’ 22nd season overall as a head coach (482-204), spending three seasons at Marion County High School from 1995-97, eight seasons at Mason County High School from 1997-2004, one season at Hawai’i Pacific in 2005-06, followed by the last 11 at Pikeville. In the collegiate ranks, Wells holds a 270-118 record through 12 seasons.

At Mason County, Wells captured the 2003 Kentucky State Championship and was runner-up in 2004. He was named coach of the year after both seasons, coaching Chris Lofton who would go on to be an All-American at the University of Tennessee.

As a player, Wells was a three-year men’s basketball letterman at Morehead State from 1992-94. Wells prepped at Rowan County High School, leading the team to three trips to the Kentucky Sweet 16 while earning First-Team All-State honors twice in 1989 and 1990.

Wells resides in Pikeville with his wife Shawne and their children, Kaylee and Mason.
