Men’s Basketball NotesScouting CumberlandsThe Patriots have kept themselves ranked in the NAIA top 20 with an 8-2 record in the last 10 games, including conference wins against Campbellsville at home and at Cumberland (Tenn.). Defense has been key, allowing opponents just 63.8 point, the sixth lowest mark in the NAIA. Three-point shooting is also a key for Cumber-lands, hitting at 38.9 percent, which is 14th nationally. Eddie Tornes, Marquis Yates and Bernard Samuel have each hit over 30 3s this season, combining to make 102 together. Samuel ranks in the top 25 nationally in 3-point accuracy as well at 45 percent.The MSC RaceWith about six weeks left in the regular season, UPIKE sits alone in third place in the Mid-South Conference standings at 4-2 in league play. Georgetown (6-0) and Life (6-1) are out in front, but the Bears have a game left at Georgetown on Jan. 26 and host Life on Feb. 4. Locking in a WinUPIKE is 14-0 when it shoots better that its opponent, 13-0 when it leads at halftime, 10-0 when shooting over 35 percent from 3 and 10-0 when it has 15 or more assists. Expo Center, including a 48-game winning streak that was the na-tion’s longest at any level before losing to Cumberlands in 2015. WellsKelly Wells enters his 11th season as the head coach of the UPIKE men’s basketball team in 2016-17. Wells has put together a 249-92 record at UPIKE, including winning the 2011 NAIA National Championship. The Morehead, Ky., native was named the NAIA Coach of the Year following that championship season.

UPIKE has put together eight 20-win seasons in the last 10 under Wells’ guidance. Included inthatrunaretheprogram’sfirsttwo30-wincampaigns,comingin2010-11and2013-14.Lastseason,theBearsfinished25-6overallandreachedtheirfifthNAIANationalTournamentwith Wells.

The Bears’ 31 wins registered during the 2013-14 campaign are the most in program history, while the 17 Mid-South Conference wins that season are a league record as well. This is Wells’ 21st season overall as a head coach (469-197), spending three seasons at Marion County High School from 1995-97, eight seasons at Mason County High School from 1997-2004,oneseasonatHawai’iPacificin2005-06,followedbythelast10atPikeville.Inthe collegiate ranks, Wells holds a 257-111 record through 11 seasons.

At Mason County, Wells captured the 2003 Kentucky State Championship and was runner-up in 2004. He was named coach of the year after both seasons, coaching Chris Lofton who would go on to be an All-American at the University of Tennessee.

As a player, Wells was a three-year men’s basketball letterman at Morehead State from 1992-94. Wells prepped at Rowan County High School, leading the team to three trips to the Ken-tucky Sweet 16 while earning First-Team All-State honors twice in 1989 and 1990.

Wells resides in Pikeville with his wife Shawne and their children, Kaylee and Mason.
