2.ANALYSIS

RuaDireitaislocadedintheBairroStoricoofAveiro,betweenthecenterandtheuniversity,thusbecomingoneofthemostusefulandimportantlinkforthecitizenscrossingthecity.

RuaDireitawasthefirstcommercialstreetinthecity,soithasahistoricalimportance.TheRuaDireitahastwoaccesses:onefromAvenidaSantaJoana,theotherfromRuadoClubedosGalitos.MostofthepartofRuaDireitaisonlyforpedestriansexceptfortheentranceofundergroundparking,inthebeginningoftheruainthesideoftheAvenidaSantaJoana.Theundergroundparkingisunderallthesquareattheside.Inonesideofthesquarethereisalsoanotherparkingonthesurface.

Abouttheoutsidespaces:theRuaisconnectedwithtwosquares,theoneontheundergroundparkingwiththepolicestationandthecivilgovernment,theotheristheonenearerthecenterandinwhichthereisthetheatreofAveiro.

Afterananalysisinsituweunderstandthemainproblemsandopportunitiesofthisstreet.Boththetwoaccessesarecriticalpointsbecauseoneisoccupiedformorethananhalfwiththeundergroundparkingentrance.Theotherisinfrontoftheroundaboutandtheundergroundaccessneartheforumisnotwellshownandcaracterized.ThestreetisveryusedasalinkbetweenthecenterandtheotherpartofthecityandalotofpeoplegothrowtheRua,butalmostalltheshopsareclosedordismissandalsothehousesarenotpopulated.Onlyafewshoparestillopenandwork,oneexampleofastillworkingplacearethetwobarsinthesquareoftheGovernoCivil,inwhichtherewasalotofstudentsit.Boththetwosquaresarehugeemptyspacewithnospecificcaracterizationandalsofewplacestositwhicharenotwelllocatedbecausetheyarejustalongthesidesofthesquares.Anothergoodpointtonoticeisthepresenceofalotofbeautifulandhistoricalbuildingswhicharenotwellenhanced.

DIAGNOSTICSWehaveanalyzedtheproblemsandthepositivitiesofthearea.Abouttheproblems,oneofthemostvisibleisthemainentranceontheruaSantaJoanaofthePraçaMarquês,becauseofthepresenceoftheaccessoftheundergroundcarparking.Therearedifficultiesforthepedestrianstowalkneartheentraceinsafetybecauseofthepresenceofthecars.Besidetheentrancethereisabigabandonedspaceclosedwiththepanelsfullofgraffiti,andthisisnotwellwelcoming.Aboutthepraçaitselfthemainnegativeaspectisthehugeemptyspaceandthenotwelllocatedfornitures,thismakestheareanotcomfortableandfriendlyfortheusersthatcan’tsocializeandstayingingroup. AboutRuaDireita,thestreetisfullofclosedcommercialactivitiesandupperfloorsaren’tinhabitedandsomebuildingareindeclining.ThestreetisusuallyusedonlyasacrossingconnectionbetweenthetwopartofAveiro,becausepeoplearenottemptedtostayin,thishappensmostlyinthenight.Notallthecommercialactivitiesareclosedorlookold,fewofthemareinvolvedinsocialandartisticactivitiestoimprovetheuseofRuaDireita.Anotherpositiveaspectisthepresenceofalotofpeopleinthesquare,butconcentratedintheonlyonecafè.Thisclearlyshowsthatinthesquaretherearen’tactivities,fornituresorclosedspacesthatencouragepeopletointeract.Thepresenceofalotimportantpublicbuildingsisanotherposivitiveaspect,thereisanoldfirestationthatisrestoredbutit’snotusedandalsoitisalsoveryimportanttheEscolaBásica1ºCicloDeGlória,becauseitdefinesimportantusers,thechildrenandtheirparents.AllBairroStoricoisfullofhistoricandhistoricbuildingstorevitalize.

4. PROGRAM

Wehavedefined3maingroups:• ECOSYSTEM:Theareaissurroudedbynaturalelements.IntheNorththereistheRiaandintheWestthereistheParkofSantoAntonio.Ourintentionistocreatelinkwiththisimportantnaturalelements,bringingthewaterandthegreenintheprojectandalsosolvingtheproblemofthewindcomingfromthenorth.• INFLUENCE:TheBairroStoricoisacrucialneighborhoodbetweentheuniversity,theBairrodoLiceuandthecitycenter.Ourprojectwantdefineaneasyandclearconnectionbetweentheseneighborhoods.• FUNCTIONSANDIMPORTANTBUILDINGS:Westudiedalldifferentfunctionsonthesurroundingoftheareaandwehaveidentifiedthebuildingsthataremoreimportantforourproject:thefirestationandtheschool.

5. PROPOSALS

Wehaveelaboratedamasterplanforourproposals.

Toimprovetheconnectionwiththeotherneighborhoods,wechoosetomakepedestriansthemostimportantusers,enphatizingthecrossingareaoftheroadSantaJoanawiththesamefloorandtrasformthispartoftheAvenidaintoalowspeedroadasmuchaspossiblebecausethereistheentrace/exitofthetunnel.Weremovemostofthepartofsurfaceparking,leavingjustapiecededicatedtotheparentsofthestudents.

ToemphatizethesenseofRuaSantaJoanaandtoclosetheprojectarea,weputalineoftreesintheedgeoftheleavedparking.TosolvetheproblemofthemainaccesstoPraçaMarquês,wecreateaonlyflooringattheentraceofRuaDireitatogivemoreimportanceatthepedestrians,inthewaythatthecarshavetoslowdown.

Toconvertetheabbandonedspaceneartheentracewethinkabout,takinginaccounthowitwasusedfrompeopleinthepast,aspaceforleagalgraffiti.Thisspacecanimprovetheinteractionbetweenyoungpeople,it’spossibleorganizechallenginsandgalleriesoftheartisticwork.

Tocreatealinkwiththenaturalelements,wedecidedtomaintaintheoldprojectaboutwaterandfountainbutupgradeitandmakeitwork.

Tobringstudentsinthisareaandcreateactivitiesforthemwethinkaboutthecreationofalightstructurebuildingdedicatedforthestudyandworktogetherinrelationtothe“bombeiros”buildingwhichisconvertinastudybuildingtoo.ThelightstructurebuildingislocatedinthewaytosolvetheproblemofthewindcomingfromtheNorthanditwascomposedbypanelswhichcanbemovedandpositionedindifferentway,representingtheworksofthegraffitiarea.

Toimprovetheinteractionandthecommunicationoftheusers,wethinkaboutthecreationofparticularbenchesthatwiththeirshapes,allowpeopletostaytogether.

Tocreatealinkwiththepark,wecreateagreenzonededicatedinparttothechildrenofthenearschool,intheareaoftheoldsurfaceparking.Todefinetheedgesofthesquareandcreateaspacetowork,learnandinteract,wecreateabuilding,asmuchaspossibletransparenttocreatecontinuityalongalltheprojectarea.TheshapeandthematerialchoosenpermitthattheusersfromallthenearaccessesareinvitedandstimulatedtogotothePraça.ThisbuildingcanbeusedasaFabLabandMakerSpace,consideringthatAveiroisanimportanttechnologicalcenterofPortugal,andthesetypesofactivitieshelptolearnaboutthisandcanbeinterestingforalltypeofusersofdifferentages.

ThelastpointoftheprojectisgivemorevisibilityatRuaDireita,expeciallyduringthenight,becauseinthispartoftheday,alotofpeoplegoacrossthisstreet.Wedecidetouseaspecialpaintthatcapturesthesunlightintheday,andreleaseslightduringthenight.ThisisaverycheapsolutionbutthatcanmaketheRuaDireitaunforgettable.
