It has been a sensational year for the 2015matric class of Excelsior Senior Second-ary in Belhar. With a 94,5% pass rate they invited someof their former learners to the school on Fri-day to celebrate a massive jump in bache-lors passes from 70 in 2014 to 113 in 2015.Prideof placewent to the top student, Lau-

ren du Plessis, who made history at theschool with distinctions in all her subjects(English HL 82%, Afrikaans 90%, maths89%, life orientation 86%, accounting 91%,business studies 89% and geography 89%).On Friday she spoke to the learners at the

school to motivate them on always aimingto reach their potential. She stressed that nothing in life comes

easily and that they should never let nega-tive influences interfere with their dreams

of a positive future.“Sometimes there are unforeseen circum-

stances that come yourway thatmake it dif-ficult to stay emotionally strong and fo-cussed on your future, but you must neverallow it to get you down,” she said.“I lost my father eight years ago, so mymother, with the support of my grandmoth-er, had to work wonders with her meagresalary to make sure that her three childrencould get an education.“I never let this get me down, but showedmy appreciation of what theywere doing byusing this as amotivation forme toaimhighand achieve my dreams.“It meant that I worked harder with the

aim of getting a bursary to study B Com atUWC. I thankmymother, grandmother andbrother for their support and the sacrificesthat always motivated me.”She also had a powerful message to moti-

vate the current crop of learners at the

school.“You can make your dreams real, but re-

member – it is hard work from day one, sostay focussed and motivated.“Take responsibility for your education

by making those sacrifices to attend extraclasses.“Draw up and stick to a study timetable,

but most importantly – surround yourselfwith positive friends who share yourdreams of a positive future.“Take the example of my circumstances

to see that anything is possible. My highmark in English, which I thought impossi-ble, is proof that you can go that extra mileif you want to.“When it comes to finances, don’t give up.

With hard work there is a bursary waitingfor you out there, but you must do your re-search and apply early – then keep thosegoals and aimsmotivating evenwhen timesget tough,” said Lauren.

Door to door with a difference: Police inRavensmead took to the streets on Wednesday 6

January. They visited victims of domestic violence inthe Uitsig area and distributed pamphlets. This was

to educate the community on domestic violence andgive them more safety tips on how to protect their

property and personal belongings. The communitywas also sensitised on the importance of keeping

their dirt bins behind locked gates and to report it tothe police if they saw anyone walking down the

street pushing a wheelie bin. Here Warrant OfficerHerman Geldenhuys and Captain André Geldenhuys

TygerBurger is launching a new initiativecalled TygerCommunity where we dedicatespace in the newspaper to companies andorganisations who have feel-good stories toshare.Due to a lack of space, it has become al-

most impossible to publish these stories onour normal news pages, even though we’dlove to do so.A company or organisation can buy space

on theTygerCommunity page for aminimalfee anduse it to showcase their involvement

in the community.According to Neels Kleynhans, business

development manager of WP Media (pub-lisher of TygerBurger, City Vision and Peo-ple’s Post), this is the ideal platform to getcommunities involved in their projects andupcoming events.“Businesses with a similar goal and vi-

sion can join hands to make a difference,”says Neels.V For more information send an email to neels.kleyn[email protected] or phone him on 071 682 1653.

Housing tenantswho are in arrears aregoing to meet their match this year.Legal steps lie in store for all those

who rent houses from theCity of CapeTownand who are in arrears and ignore all thereminders to pay, particularly if they areable to pay their rent.“Please use this opportunity tomake sure

that you keep your abode,” says Chris Bar-nard, project manager at TraceOnline, whowas contracted by the City of Cape Town toprovide tenants of City housing with infor-mation, assist them with indigent grantsand undertake collections.According to Barnard there are already

a number of cases on the court roll for evic-tion orders for tenants who have been in ar-rears for a long time and who have ignoredall previous reminders and opportunities tomake arrangements for payment. There are approximately 260 000 people in

theMother City on thewaiting list for hous-ing, and they are prepared to pay.“It is unfair towards the thousands of peo-

ple who want to pay but are prevented fromgetting a house by those who refuse to pay.

“Another result of peoplenot paying theirrent is that there is not sufficient incomefor all the maintenance that needs to bedone. This is unfair towards those peoplewho do pay,” he added. The City has had an indigent grant for

manyyears to subsidise peoplewhohavenoincome or a very small income and forwhich they can apply. However, if they failto pay the decreased rental just once, thegrant is immediately withdrawn. The process that is followed before evic-

tion is very fair. People are first remindedthat they are in arrears and that they haveto pay. They are further informed that theycan apply for an indigent grant if their in-come justifies it. Reminders are deliveredto them personally and they receive a num-ber of SMSs which explain the seriousnessof the situation. If they still do not respond, they will receive a letter from an attorney.Themoment this happens, the process is nolonger in the hands of the City and the legalprocess will take its course.V Tenants who are in arrears are urgently requestedto contact TraceOnline at 0861 99 77 77.

The first crop of entrepreneurship fellows at UWC celebrate their achievement.

University grows entrepreneursEntrepreneurship empowerment is

growing at the University of the West-ern Cape.

UWC’s Centre for entrepreneurship andinnovation (CEI) proudly graduated theirfirst crop of entrepreneurship fellows re-cently, and has now introduced new entre-preneurs to participate in and gain valuableexperience through this exciting course.

Aidan Van Den Heever, media officer forthe Department of institutional advance-ment at the university, said that the pro-gramme allows for peer-to-peer learning andfacilitation support among SMMEs, contrib-uting to knowledge, skills and personal de-velopment.

“Participants are provided with uniqueopportunities and experiences that are nottypically available to many entrepreneurs,”

he said.“They attend workshops, receive peer con-

sulting, exchange and field service opportuni-ties, and also have opportunities to connectand collaborate with other distinguishedchange makers in the development fieldaligned to their industry.”

The class of 2015 comprised a group of grad-uates who participated in the pilot Supplierdevelopment training programme presentedby UWC’s CEI, and sponsored by the WesternCape Government Department of economicdevelopment and tourism.

The director of the CEI, Charleen Duncan, told the graduates that the day was a great cel-ebration and they should feel proud of com-pleting the journey with the CEI and UWC.

UWC’s finance director, Manie Regal, said:“The fellowship started as an incubation

programme, but has transformed itself intoa business support project where entrepre-neurs can receive tried and tested advicefrom their peers.”

Regal noted that one lesson all entrepre-neurs could learn from the Fees Must Fallcampaign at UWC, is that it is importantto adapt to change within your business.

City’s online wasp app takes offTheCity’s newonlinewasp reporting ap-

plication is gaining popularity as morethan 600wasp reports have been logged

via this tool – mostly in January this year.Since the launch of the City of Cape

Town’s InvasiveWaspControl (IWC) projectover 9 000 European paper wasp nests havebeen removed from the core areas of infesta-tion such as Durbanville, Kuils River,Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Bellville. The IWC project controls the invasive Eu-

ropean paper and German wasps withinCity boundariesEuropeanpaperwaspnests have also been

removed fromhomes in SomersetWest, Gor-don’s Bay, Bothasig, Ottery, Plumstead,Constantia, Woodstock, Athlone, Wetton,Parklands, Sunningdale, Pinelands, Newl-ands and Rondebosch.According to amedia release issued by the

City of Cape Town last week, this indicatesthat the invasion is spreading tomore areas.

More than 2 000 people have accessed theCity of Cape Town’s new onlinewasp report-ing application since the launch of the appli-cation in November last year, according tothe media release. This user-friendly development tool has

made the logging of wasp reports more ac-cessible to members of the public, which al-lows for a quicker response time to havewasps removed.Interestingly, the data indicates that peo-

ple across the world, including from theUnited States of America, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand,Namibia and Kenya have visited the site atwww.edrr.co.za/wasps.According to international cases of inva-

sion involving the European paper and Ger-man wasps, these insects have the potentialto create problems ranging frombeing a nui-sance to having catastrophic economic im-pacts in the wine, deciduous fruit and bee-

keeping industries. The German wasp in particu-

lar is quite aggressive and thereare several reported cases ofthem stingingworkers harvest-ing grapes and other fruits. They can present a hazard to

people and home owners enjoy-ing the outdoors and uninten-tionally disturb a colony. These wasps also feed on ma-

ture grapes in the late summermonths and cause extensivedamage to vineyards.Theyarealsoknown toattack

and kill honeybees and infil-trate bee hives, which are detri-mental to the honey industry.Wasp season usually occursduring warmer periods, fromSeptember to May.“We can see that the wasps

are spreading across the city. However, since the start of the wasp season, we haveremoved over 1 300 nests. This is far lessthan the previous corresponding seasonwhen 2 500 were removed. Wasps seem to belower in numbers than usual, likely due tothe weather patterns,” said Johan van derMerwe, mayoral committee member for en-ergy, environmental and spatial planning.“The City is therefore taking this opportu-

nity to remove as many wasp nests as possi-ble to try and decrease their presence aheadof the warmer days. Residents are encour-aged to use the online tool to report waspsightings so that the nests can be removedas soon as possible.“By using a simple online tool, the wasp

project is nowable to find the locationof newsightings and confirm the status of thesesightings instantly,” Van der Merwe said.Removal happens on a first-reported, first-

response basis and calls are queued accord-ing to the order of time reported.

Residents are advised that the sting fromthese wasps is particularly painful.Property owners are primarily responsi-

ble for pest control on their premises, andthe Citywill assist according to available ca-pacity.If nests are removed privately, property

owners areurged to senda report containingtheir street address and the number of nestsremoved to [email protected] as this helps with the City’s fu-ture planning and research, as well as deter-mining the movement of the wasps. The City’s IWC project does not respond

to reports outside the city boundaries, or toindigenouswasp reports, or reports of indig-enous bees.V For more information, residents should visitwww.capetowninvasives.org.za or visit www.facebook.com/ctinvasives. For queries or problems uploading wasp reports, residents can send an emailto [email protected] with “WASPS”in the subject line.

NICOLE MCCAIN

Three hundred and fifty years ago,the first cornerstone of the Castleof Good Hope was laid.Built by the Dutch East India

Company, which established a re-freshment station in theCape to ca-ter to vessels on the trade route be-tween theNetherlands and Indone-sia, the castle is the oldest existingcolonial building in South Africa. It replaced an older fort, construct-ed from clay and timber, built byJan van Riebeeck upon his arrival.A recent ceremony to commemo-

rate the laying of the first corner-stone also celebrated the history ofthe castle. In those 350 years the stronghold

has seenmany transitions, occupa-tions and battles, says Calvyn Gil-fellan, CEO of the Castle ControlBoard.“Since there was a river nearby

and Van Riebeeck’s fort 100maway, there would have been a

Khoi community living on landthatwouldhavehadgrazing, waterholes, an indigenous forest, smallgame and what is today known ascoastal fynbos,” he explains. “Thearea where the castle is today wasnot simply an open, unoccupiednatural piece of land just waitingfor the Dutch East India Companyto build the castle on.”The commemoration must pay

homage to those whowere “dispos-sessed from their land, margina-lised, destroyed and treated asthird-class citizens in the land oftheir birth”, says Gilfellan.“However, the contributions of

the Dutch, English and other Euro-peans will not be denied at all; it issimply a matter of balance.”Once a place associated with

slavery, prisoners and torture, thecastle is now a place all South Afri-cans can relate to, says Gilfellan.“All people must be able to feel

welcome and associate with thecastle and its history – good, bad or

ugly. For instance, Robben Islandhas been a place of banishment, in-carceration and pain – but peoplewant to go there.Wewant the samefor the castle,” he says. The castle was originally the

headquarters of the Dutch East In-dia Company and then became theseat of the Dutch colonial power. After that theBritish took over andruled for a short while and then itfell back into Dutch (Batavian)

hands. The British took poweragain and ruled until the South Af-rican Union in 1910.“The castle then became the mil-

itary headquarters of the defenceforce until about 20 years ago. To-day it is a well-renowned heritagesite and tourist attraction.”The castle currently houses four

museums, hosts indigenous lan-guage classes, skills developmentclasses and had almost 170 000 visi-tors last year. The castle is currently undergo-

ing a R108m facelift. The project isdue to be completed by Septembernext year. The seven buildings within the

castle walls will be repainted andhave new carpentry installed. Thedeteriorated waterproofing on theroofs and ramparts will be re-placed and the stone moat wallsand banks will be repaired. Theproject also includes the refurbish-ment of murals, renovations to theDolphin Pool and plaster repairs.

CAPE TOWN: ASSOCIATION BATTLING TO KEEP HEAD ABOVE WATER

Softball body in needJOSEPH PILLAY

The Cape Town Softball Association(CTSA) is battling to keep its headabove water due to lack of sponsorship.

The organisation was once regarded as themost successful softball body in Africa, butthis crown seems to be slipping .

In an in-depth, exclusive interview withCTSAchairpersonNooreNacerodien, he ad-mitted the game of softball needs a changein fortune as the community cannot affordto play sport anymore due to the high costof fees, transport and equipment.

Lack of financial backing from benefac-tors has now urged Nacerodien to do some-

thing about this and “instead of begging forhandouts to ensure the continued existenceof our organisation, we must get off ourbacks and look at ways of raising funds tokeep our heads above water”.

Nacerodien says one such fund-raising in-itiative is a “city of champions” golf dayevent at the Mowbray Golf Club on 17 April.

He is making an appeal to golf enthusiaststo bust out their irons to help CTSA.

“For many years the selected provincialandnational softball playershad topay theirown way to tournament championships.

“The poorer clubs are suffering due totheir cash-strapped coffers to travel to ve-nues to play and honour fixtures, with the

result that many defaults have occurred inrecent times and over the years. Clubs havebeen struggling and cannot afford to pay fortransport.

“Another aspect and bone of contention isthat some of our affiliated clubs have littleor no equipment. Thus for many years theminnow sport codes, like softball, baseball, etc., failed to obtain assistance from the cor-porate world.”

Nacerodien is confident that the fund-rais-ing event could help ease the burden.

He is appealing to potential sponsors andcompanies to partner with the organisationto donate prizes and goody bag items.

Companies are also invited to buy brand-

ing packages, ranging from R4000 for a four-ball hole, and on the green putting surfacesfrom R10 000 to R35 000 for either silver, goldand platinum sponsorship packages.

Nacerodien says hewas told that theMow-bray Golf Club had gained a reputation forhardly having to close the course due to ad-verse conditions during the wet season.

The fund-raising event invites golf enthu-siasts to play an 18-hole game in four-playerteams.

Entry for the tournament costs R1 400 perfour-ball or R350 per player.V Interested parties and companies can contact Nacerodien on 076 566 7774 or chairperson@capetownsoftball.com.
