Superhouse is a brand concept created by Magnus Strom of Strom Architects based in the UK – an architectwith a deep understanding of the Superyacht industry. The fact that the term ‘Superyacht’ exists, implies a level ofquality (and of course size) that sets them apart from other mere yachts. If such a level of excellence exists in theyachting industry, then why not in the architecture industry? Strom wanted to envision a way to ‘bring Superyachtsashore’, so the ethos for Superhouse emerged – contemporary, elegant, bespoke and unique in terms of design andstyle, with uncompromised quality. The tagline on their website (www.superhouse.me) is ‘Luxury throughSimplicity’, which succinctly sums up the brand’s style. Luxury emerges through the design, materials used, and thefeatures and the finishing – devoid of excessive detailing and ‘bling’.

The Caribbean is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Its lights, colours, fragrances, lushness of sceneryand warm climate make it a dream destination for many. It’s no surprise that 5 of the top 10 locations in theworld for millionaire paradises are found there amongst its islands, and Caribbean coastlines of Central andSouth America. At the top-end of the real estate market, an eclectic range of architecture is available —

ranging from the Plantation-style villas complete with columns, balustrades and high internal wooden ceilings, tocontemporary homes with infinity pools and wooden decks. There is certainly a wealth of choices, but if you’re aconnoisseur, commissioning your own Superhouse will be at top of your ‘A’ list. A house designed to be so individualto you and your life, it’s like an extension of your personality. It appeals to those who want to create somethingextraordinary, totally unique, and built to the highest specification. This is contemporary architecture on another level.

Upstairs, all of the bedrooms and bathrooms areon the same side of the building, so are affordedthe same open views and cooling breezes. Youcould enjoy lying in bed whilst watching your

yacht bob gently in the swell, or sit on your private terraceat sunset enjoying an aged rum aperitif before dinner.

The outside areas will be a significant feature of thehouse, to capture the benefits of the therapeutic climatethe Caribbean has to offer. Much of your time will likelybe spent outdoors by the 50m infinity pool, or on theprivate beach deck looking out to sea. Lunch can betaken at the poolside dining area, located adjacent to thekitchen for the ease of wait staff, or perhaps out on youryacht moored in the bay. However, if the grind ofbusiness life is calling, you can escape into the coolindoors and work in the hi tech satellite internetequipped office located on the first floor mezzanine, surrounded by your professionally hung and lit artcollection and curated library.

Much like Richard Branson’s new Caribbean venture‘Moskito Island’ in the British Virgin Islands, which willuse renewable energy for 75-80% of its electricity, theSuperhouse could potentially be designed to be off-grid,so would be perfect for tropical island living. This couldbe achieved by utilizing significant insulation, use of heatrecovery ventilation in cooler weather, an on-site minisewage treatment plant and solar paneling or discretelypositioned wind turbines to provide power. Storingpower is also easy now using modern technology fromcompanies like Tesla. This approach would also producevery low running costs.

So, wherever you can picture your dream home, letSuperhouse help you to realize your vision. They have asaying on the Caribbean island of Tobago: “All men finedey hole”, simply translated it means that everyone findstheir own ‘place’ which will become a distinguishingcharacter in their lives. Could your ‘place’ be aSuperhouse in the Caribbean? | JP

This dream house will of course comewith every conceivable modernconvenience and luxury amenity.Superhouse leaves property acquisitionto you, but deals with everything else –from finding and appointingcontractors, to arranging for yourclimate-controlled wine cellar to be

installed. As with all things of a bespoke nature, the costto build a Superhouse is dependent on the individualdesign and various factors, with Strom offering a startingprice point of around USD $1,500 per square foot. Thisprice tag keeps the dream of owning a Superhousepossibly only for a few, but what a possibility! With thisin mind, Superhouse has stated that they will only designand build 30 Superhouses, and that each house will beindividually numbered to create the world’s first ‘limitededition’ houses. This serves to further enhance theexclusivity of these houses, as each will have its ownnumber discretely engraved into its façade.

The house designed to launch the brand isenvisioned in the Mediterranean, but add in a few palmtrees and you could easily see this house on a beach in astunning Caribbean island, or set on a cliff overlooking amajestic coastline. The features of this concept house –named S 00/30 – are as appropriate for the Caribbean asthey are for the Med. Access can either be via road, air orsea – thanks to the private dock at the front andhelicopter pad at the rear of the house.

The long, open façade facing the sea allows formaximum appreciation of the stunning views and tradewinds, which allows for completely natural coolingthroughout the house. On the ground floor, the entirespace is open to the fragrant sea breeze, and the additionof a deep overhang provides further solar shading, minimizing the need for using air-conditioning. Inaddition, the stone that makes up the back wall of thehouse will help to cool the space and retain an ambienttemperature. To ‘close’ the ground floor, minimallyframed glazing slides out from where it is hidden withinthe walls of the adjacent volume. As there are nocolumns, even with the windows closed your view will stillbe almost completely undisrupted. During the hurricaneseason or when the house is to be locked up and left,storm/security shutters secreted below the deck roll orslide up and are fixed in place to offer maximumprotection from the elements.
