HUMBER’S POLYTECHNIC APPROACH TO EDUCATION MEANS THAT WE THINK PRACTICE IS AS IMPORTANT AS THEORY. YOU’LL GET LOTS OF HANDS-ON, PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN FACILITIES THAT MIRROR WHAT YOU’LL SEE IN THE WORKING WORLD – NO MATTER WHAT PROGRAM YOU CHOOSE.

It also means that, along with being great teachers, your professors have extensive industry experience – with the connections and advice that can help you even after you graduate.Small class sizes and caring, responsive professors mean you’ll never be just a number here.

A Humber education means you can choose to do a certificate, a diploma, a degree or an apprenticeship – there are lots of credentials to choose from. Start with a diploma, then apply for advanced standing in a degree program. Complete a certificate, then pursue a diploma. Choose the path that’s best for you and your dreams.

You’ll have opportunities to participate in innovative applied research, working with professors and industry partners to solve real-world problems. You’ll also be given the tools and support you need if you want to go into business on your own.

We work with industry to make sure our programs teach relevant, job-ready skills that will prepare you not just for a job, but a fulfilling career.

LAUNCH A HEALTHY BUSINESSNineteen-year-old Madeleine has big ideas to help people become more healthy, and she had help from Humber to make her dreams a reality.Madeleine wowed the judges at Humber’s annual LaunchPad business pitch competition with her healthy-eating company, Flexible Integrated Tactics (FIT) – and won $12,000 in funding to help turn her big ideas into reality.

The LaunchPad competition was started by Humber in 2012 to help entrepreneurs develop and nurture their business ideas. The annual contest is run by HumberLaunch, the college’s small business incubator, which offers mentorship, funding opportunities and education about entrepreneurship.

Ooyavah Inc. is a leading Ontario business in stereoscopic technology that has developed a prototype for glasses-free 3D visualization on the Apple iPad. They had one problem, though: their technology required users to mount the lens on the iPad and then store it when not in use, all without compromising the iPad’s other functions.

To find a solution to this challenge, Humber Industrial Design professor Odin Cappello led a team of nine Humber students from a variety of programs to design and prototype a case that would house the Ooyavah lens, as well as develop a user interface, social media campaign and marketing video.

The team worked in collaboration with Sheridan College’s Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies. Students Abigail, Keith and Dimitri, as well as Cappello and industry partner Ihor Petelycky, are named as inventors on a pending patent for the case.

The project received funding from the Ontario Centres of Excellence and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

“Working on Ooyavah was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and experience a real-world project,” says Dimitri.

“It wasn’t only schoolwork, but an opportunity to design something that is actually going to be produced.”

WHEN HUMBER STUDENTS AND FACULTY TEAM UP WITH INDUSTRY, GREAT THINGS HAPPEN.

OUR MUSIC STUDENTS WORK WITH INDUSTRY LEGENDS.

Music producer Bob Ezrin has worked with Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper and K’naan – and, this year, with a group of Humber music students.

Ezrin, who produced K’naan’s song “Wavin’ Flag” in 2010, was Humber’s 2015 Producer in Residence, giving a Humber student band the opportunity to get up-close and personal during a live recording session.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for students to have an experience with a world-class producer – one who has an established career and is credible in the music industry,” says professor Ian Terry.

Fifteen students submitted songs for Ezrin to produce. He selected “Like You Do,” which was written and sung by Meagan, a student in Humber’s Bachelor of Music program.

Meagan and her band, which is made up of other music students, were given feedback as they recorded her song.

“He knows what works in the studio and wastes no time,” says Meagan. “He’s a people person who keeps the atmosphere together while having everything run smoothly and efficiently. He lifted my song to great heights along with my spirit.”

Our students are more than just students – they’re designers, filmmakers, emergency responders, actors, chefs, entrepreneurs and athletes. They build houses. They write newspaper articles. They work with government, charities and small businesses. They’re inventors and innovators. They travel the world. They find a path that works for them. They make a difference.

“We took the skills that we learned throughout our program and used them to inform the planning process for Street Talk, our public art intervention and gallery exhibition. The great thing about this kind of capstone course is being able to learn through hands-on experience and actually execute our projects in real-world environments.”

EVER SINCE COURTNEY WAS A LITTLE GIRL, SHE KNEW SHE WANTED TO WORK IN FILM. Of course, when she was young, she wanted to be an actress – but once she got to high school and started working on theatre productions, she figured out that behind the scenes was where she really wanted to be.

From there, Humber was an obvious choice – even though it meant moving away from her hometown of Ottawa.

“Humber – specifically the Film and Television Production (FMTV) program – was the only school I applied to,” she explains. “After coming in for a tour and learning about all the opportunities that were available in the classroom I knew Humber would be the best fit for me.”

After three years at Humber, Courtney is now a member of the film union (IATSE 873) for props and set dressing, meaning she often gets calls when film sets need extra help. She says the projects she was able to work on while in school were valuable stepping stones to her future career in film.

“A film that I wrote was produced and made into a short, and I was able to be part of two projects that absolutely soared once they were finished,” she says. “Humber has given me the opportunity to grow into the person I wanted to be three years ago, and has helped me lay the foundation to get where I want to be in the next five to 10 years. I’m looking forward to the future and all the opportunities I will have.”

DEGREE STUDENT PROFILE

BACHELOR OF APPLIED ARTS – CRIMINAL JUSTICE

HILRY

DIPLOMA TO DEGREE TRANSFER STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPHumber awards degree scholarships to students entering any Humber degree program who have completed a two- or three-year diploma from a publicly funded college. Students who have achieved a program GPA of 80% or better will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $2,500. Diplomas do not have to be related to the degree program of choice and are not tied to the eligibility for advanced standing or transfer credit.

MOVING FROM A DIPLOMA TO A DEGREE GAVE HILRY A HEAD START ON AN EXCITING CAREER.Growing up in Mississauga, Hilry didn’t think much about crime – instead he loved cars, doing a high school co-op placement at an auto shop. Watching the way police officers helped his family following a break-in, though, Hilry was inspired to pursue law enforcement as a career.

Hilry enrolled in Humber’s Community Justice Services diploma program intending to, as he puts it, “Get in, get out, get a job” – but he quickly discovered a new world of opportunities. Getting involved with The Bridge, a group that supports black students, and receiving a scholarship from the Association of Black Law Enforcers gave Hilry a boost of confidence that inspired him to pursue further education. After completing his diploma, he got advanced standing in Humber’s criminal justice degree program – and hasn’t looked back since.

“There’s no better job than service to people,” says Hilry, who is involved with Humber’s Young Criminal Justice Professionals group and intends to become a police officer. “Humber has given me the confidence to really push myself – I’m going to stay connected with the school any way I can once I graduate.”

Ten students from the nursing, practical nursing and early childhood education (advanced studies in special needs) programs travelled with Burg-Feret as well as a pediatrician and a family physician to help perform health assessments and conduct mobile clinics in small towns.

Taking students out of their comfort zones and giving them the opportunity to contribute to communities around the world is a key element in Burg-Feret’s teaching.

“Reaching out to under-resourced communities gives our students an eye-opening experience, and helps them grow in their cultural sensitivities,” says Burg-Feret, who has volunteered extensively in the area. “We’re looking to develop sustainable relationships with the people we meet, and to provide what those host communities tell us they need.”

For the students who participated in Burg-Feret’s trip, the experience was, indeed, life-changing.

“A lot of us had never met – we all had different backgrounds – but we all learned to work in sync really well,” says Daniel, a student in the practical nursing program. “This kind of trip makes you appreciate not just nursing, but life itself.”

SARGAM

POSTGRADUATE STUDENT PROFILE

SARGAM KNOWS BETTER THAN MOST THAT SOME OF THE BEST LEARNING TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM.The recent graduate of Humber’s Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management program is the only North American student participating in a prestigious fellowship program with the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, sponsored by BCD Travel. In May 2015, Sargam travelled with two other participants to luxury hotels in Dubai, Bangalore, Sao Paulo, Beijing, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Paris to learn about corporate travel in a six-week whirlwind of meetings, seminars and industry-related tours.

Sargam, who spent a year backpacking in New Zealand, Australia and Asia before she came to Humber, will follow her world tour with a six-month paid traineeship program with BCD Travel in Toronto.

“I had such an amazing travel experience backpacking that I realized I wanted to work in the tourism industry,” says Sargam, who has a bachelor’s degree in sociology. “Humber’s program has proven to be a great way to prepare me for a career in the industry.”

WHAT OUR GRADS ARE SAYING

MUSIC

JONATHAN AND ANDREW KAYDEPENDING ON THE DAY, JONATHAN KAY BEGINS HIS MORNING WITH THE TANPURA. OR THE BANSURI. AND SOMETIMES THE ESRAJ.Mostly unknown on this side of the world, the three instruments are fundamental to Indian classical music, which Jonathan and his brother, Andrew, have been studying in Kolkata, India for the last five years.

Both graduates of Humber’s music program, Jonathan and Andrew have fused Indian classical music with western jazz on two recent albums, Mandala and Pranaam.

And no matter how far they might travel, they still maintain deep ties to Humber.

“Most of our closest friends are from our Humber days, and most of the musicians we play with now are also from Humber,” says Jonathan. “All of my professors continue to be important mentors and influences in my life, and their support is invaluable.”

“WHEN YOU’RE IN A TRADE, COMPETITIONS ARE A GREAT WAY TO DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS. I won silver in Electronics at Skills Ontario, then silver at Skills Canada, and I’ve just finished my qualifying trials, which means even though I’ve graduated, I’ll be representing Humber at the World Skills competition in Sao Paolo, Brazil later this year. My professors have spent hours with me getting me ready for competing – I wouldn’t be where I am without them. Getting to compete at this level is a fantastic opportunity.”
