For Amber, a student in Humber’s Public relations diploma program, winning the Queen’s diamond Jubilee Medal was merely a step along a long path of social advocacy and community involvement.
The award, which has honoured the accomplishments of 60,000 Canadians across the country and internationally, was given to Amber for her work with the South Etobicoke Youth Assembly (SEYA).
“SEYA was the heart and soul of my community work,” says Amber, who began working with the organization when she was 12. “during my time with SEYA, I learned more than I ever could have hoped, and took advantage of every opportunity to learn and lead.”
And lead she did. As a result of her 11 years of advocacy work with SEYA, Amber has been co-chair of the City of Toronto Youth Strategy Panel and was part oftheLakeshoreCommunityCentreWorkingGroup. She now serves on the Board of directors of The remix Project, an urban arts program for marginalized young people and is on the Advisory Committee for theLaidlawFoundation, whichprovidesfundingforyouth programs across southern Ontario.

Our Bachelor of Commerce degrees operate on a common two-year platform, which means everyone builds a sound understanding of general business principles for the first two years of their program. This gives you a solid foundation in all aspects of business – something employers value. In your last two years you can then focus on your chosen specialization, and most business programs allow you to transfer from one specialization to another if your interests change in the first two years.

Katherine finished a degree in Theatre Performance and English before deciding she wanted more out of her education. She chose Humber’s Journalism – Print and Broadcast – Accelerated advanced diploma program because it would allow her to put her theatre skills to good use while also honing her ability to tell stories in creative ways.
Lovingthepressureofdeadlinesdidn’thurt,either.
“Journalism is fast-paced and deadline-driven, which I love,” says Katherine, who’s now working at CTV news in Barrie as
a videographer. “The deadlines are completely unforgiving – and that’s what makes it so exciting. Journalism is an adventure every day.”
Katherine indulged in her love for deadlines by writing an award-winning feature for Magazine World, which is published by Humber journalism students, and by working at two broadcast internships reporting, chase producing and creating on-air segments.
