Oceane ArnaudInternational Exchange Sup de Co La Rochelle, France

“Coming to Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast campus on exchange from Sup de Co La Rochelle has been a wonderful experience for me. My focus is on tourism and event studies so the location is just perfect and gives me the opportunity to learn more about the dynamic event industry working around me.

My initial plan was to come for a single session, but the MBA is so interesting here that I have extended my exchange to a second session.“

International exchange opportunities

scu.edu.au/exchange

Southern Cross University students can complete part of their studies overseas, offering a great opportunity to expand their experience and knowledge of a different country.

Southern Cross University has agreements with tertiary institutions in countries including the United States, Canada, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, India, Sweden, Japan, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. The exchange program is open to all Southern Cross University students who have successfully completed their first year of study.

Approved completed units of study can be used as credit towards the enrolled degree. Students must fund their own travel and living expenses. International students who wish to undertake an international exchange are subject to the visa requirements of the country in which the exchange operates.

Leeann KingBachelor of Arts Exchange to Cityu, Hong Kong

“I came to academia late in life and it has been an extremely rewarding experience. When SCU gave me the opportunity to go on exchange in Hong Kong, I didn’t hesitate. I had some knowledge of the Chinese way of life, as I taught English for three years in Guangxi Province prior to commencing my studies. But as a BA undergraduate, majoring in English and cultural studies, Hong Kong represented an interesting amalgamation of east and west that I eagerly wanted to explore. My advice to anyone about to go on exchange would be: Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and be prepared for days when you’ll feel like a fish out of water. Strangely enough those are often the days you learn the most about your new environment and more importantly yourself.”

The week also includes sessions with the Academic Schools, to get to know the academics and fellow students and learning about the range of activities available. Of course, there are lots of social activities as well, and it’s a great way to get established before classes begin.

Tekirabereta Matiota – KiribatiBachelor of Social Welfare

“Being far from home in an unknown land is a scary thing - it’s nerve racking and sometimes tough. But as an international student at Southern Cross University I have received first class support in helping me settle in Australia. SCU International has helped me with everything, ranging from personal to academic needs, it’s a bit odd and bizarre for me, but they provide you with the information you need to settle in Australia. It will take an awful lot of time to mention all the services provided by SCU, but the one thing I could reassure everyone is that Southern Cross University promised to deliver and they in fact delivered! I am proud to be part of this university.”

Getting a student mentor Starting out at university can sometimes be daunting. The UniMentor program connects new students with a second or third year mentor studying in the same discipline. UniMentors are in touch with the academic and social challenges of university life, as they’ve been through it themselves.

Regular meetings with a UniMentor can help new students make friends and gain positive, empowering advice and support from someone who has ‘been there’ and ‘done that’. UniMentors can advise on a range of student issues, from the best way to navigate an online study environment to where to buy the best organic coffee. Although not academic tutors, UniMentors can share their study tips, and help new students settle into an academic routine with knowledge and confidence.

New students and their mentors meet face-to-face, communicate online via email, or catch up on Facebook and other

social media sites. SCU has a strong sense of community, and students who volunteer as UniMentors have a keen desire to help other students settle in and belong.

The UniMentor program is available to all new Bachelor and Associate degree students, and is coordinated by the Equity and Diversity Office.

Becoming a student mentorIf you’ve completed at least one year of your course (on campus or by distance education) you can apply to become a face-to-face or online student mentor. Student mentors:

• receive free training and a Mentoring Certificate from the University

• develop their leadership and communication skills

• increase their knowledge of the University and student support services.

developing academic skillsFor many students, the excitement of embarking on a course of study at university, or returning to study after an absence, can be mixed with concern about achieving academic success.

Staff within the Division of Teaching and Learning provide academic support to all on-campus and distance education students, helping them to realise their full academic potential and make the most of their time at university.

Online academic skills resources provide self-guided assistance in areas such as essay and report writing and academic writing generally, approaches to effective reading, note-taking, critical analysis, time management, academic integrity and exam technique.

Staff also run workshops, group study sessions, individual consultations and offer the PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) program in selected units. scu.edu.au/academicskills

Shiori Naka – JapanEnglish for Academic Purposes Master of Marine Science and Management Master of Science (Research)

“When I first came to Australia, my English was very poor, so I did an English language course before starting my Master of Marine Science and Management. It was still a struggle but because of the encouragement I received from my family, friends and staff at the University, I didn’t give up. I successfully completed the course and was going to go back to Japan, but decided that I really wanted to do further research in English.

I had to take an intensive English class again because I needed to improve my level of English so I could enrol. Of course, it wasn’t easy and writing was the hardest part, but I got a good mark which allowed me to start research finally! I’m pretty excited and I’m sure that I will face some difficulties but I will overcome them with my passion.”

Lisa Hansberry (left) and Corelle Forster Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours)

Civil engineering students Corelle Forster and Lisa Hansberry won the BHP Billiton Award at the 2013 Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Design Challenge National Showcase for ‘demonstrating an outstanding appreciation of sustainable design and community engagement’ with their presentation for a water filtration and storage solution concept design in the Timor Leste village of Codo. It was the first time SCU had entered a team in the competition. SCU has incorporated the EWB Challenge into the first year unit, Humanitarian Engineering Project.

“We were one of 29 universities (representing 7 500 students) from Australia and New Zealand competing in the EWB National Challenge. Seven of those unis made it through to the National Showcase final in Melbourne after winning their state event. Together with our teammates Dylan Fletcher and Beau Monks, we called ourselves Team Go H2O and developed the concept design. We outlined a strong process to engage the villagers of Codo to install ceramic water filtration units in their schools, community centres and homes. We used a playful but proven cultural education process, and the potential to create an industry which they could develop for themselves with neighbouring towns and the start-up assistance of government funding provided by international aid.

The Challenge was an eye-opener. Engineering is more than just maths, concrete and construction. We enjoyed researching the current situation in Timor Leste and the plight of the Codo people. We hadn’t considered humanitarian engineering before, but soon realised the skills and knowledge we are learning in this degree can make a difference in the lives of others. The Humanitarian Engineering Project unit helped us develop teamwork and leadership skills, brainstorming, mind mapping, report writing, researching and project requirements. Being an EWB Challenge participant has created opportunities for us to apply for scholarships helping third world countries and in leadership roles.”

Ricard Canavate Campos – SpainMaster of Osteopathic Medicine

“When I finished high school, I couldn’t picture myself sitting in an office, typing and looking at computers. A friend of mine was a chiropractor and he seemed to have a nice life with time for himself. He enjoyed his work using his hands and knowing about his body. I thought it sounded great to me.  I initially came to Byron Bay a few years ago to study English and my teacher mentioned a friend was studying osteopathy at the Southern Cross University and was really happy with it. Friends had told me what a great campus Lismore was, with less people than big universities and in fact it felt more like a family. So I applied and was accepted.

I had no idea how AMAZING the course would turn out to be. I am now in my fourth year and consider myself lucky to have chosen osteopathy and pretty stoked to study it. In my view, osteopathy goes beyond normal. Osteopathy looks at complex things, and explains it with simplicity. Some define it more as an art, some others define it more as science.”

“There is an intimate learning environment at SCU and this facilitates more active learning and better support from Academic staff. I am very interested in the unit content and really like MySCU with its comprehensive course information and instruction. As an international student, I especially like being able to listen to my lectures again online. I am very grateful for the support of staff at my School and the amount of help they provide.

Coffs Harbour is the perfect size. I can find everything I need, like all the shops, facilities, nightclubs and artistic associations but we are also surrounded by World Heritage National Parks and fantastic surf beaches. The people in Coffs Harbour are especially helpful and friendly. The community has been very welcoming and interested in international students and their contribution to diversity. I feel very comfortable here. The culture is similar and I can find all the food I want. I am also enjoying the small differences. Life is less stressful in Australia. People seem very active but also relaxed.”

The School of Law and Justice provides excellent tertiary legal studies and a strong and supportive student environment. Our courses are linked to the needs of the legal profession and our industry partners, providing students with the right skills to succeed.

Degrees which put you in the workplaceAll law and paralegal courses offer students an opportunity to participate in a work placement which will count towards their degree. The learning opportunities on placement may include attending court, legal and other research, working as part of a legal team, working with clients, managing files, drafting correspondence and other legal documents, and general administrative tasks. The knowledge and experience gained through a practical placement supports students as they work towards the transition to legal practice or work as a paralegal. Students are responsible for identifying their own placement, which must be approved by the School.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws can undertake a 15-day supervised work placement to gain insights into the role of a legal practitioner as well as the dynamics of a legal practice and the legal system. Paralegal students in the Bachelor of Legal and Justice Studies and the Associate degree in Law (Paralegal Studies) can undertake a 10-day supervised work placement to gain insights into working in a legal environment in a paralegal capacity, including areas of legal practice, such as conveyancing, business or family law.

School of Law & Justice

Jimmy dufour – CanadaBachelor of Laws (2011) Lawyer, Slater and Gordon Lawyers

“I moved from the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to study at Southern Cross University and chose the University because of the quality reputation of its School of Law and Justice.

Studying the Bachelor of Laws at Southern Cross University prepared me for the workplace by providing me with a thorough understanding of the theoretical knowledge needed in the practice of law.

Through a very competitive application process, I was successful in securing a summer clerkship with Slater and Gordon Lawyers, one of Australia’s largest law firms. My clerkship was a rotation program taking me through different practice groups in their rural offices in Gunnedah, Dubbo, and Coffs Harbour. After completing my clerkship, Slater and Gordon offered me a full-time position in their Liverpool office in Sydney.

I now have a very exciting role with responsibility for the management, progression and litigation of clients’ legal matters.

The best thing about my university experience was the feeling of community on campus. Whether it was the openness of staff at the School of Law and Justice, the never-ending excitement of student activities on campus, or the support of other students, university life was interesting and fun every day of the week.”

Karlee RawkinsPainter Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Visual Arts Bachelor of Arts with Honours

At her first exhibition after graduating from Southern Cross University, painter Karlee Rawkins sold everything on show.

“I was really lucky. I had fabulous lecturers who encouraged me and supported my work and gave me the confidence to do it. After the exhibition I had enough funds to go further. So I bought a ticket to India and Nepal. Those countries permanently affected my sense of colour and the way I combine colour. I’m still processing the colours I saw there,” she said.

A few years later she painted ‘Bitch in India’, of a dog she saw there. It won her the 2003 Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, which included a five-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris.

“I’ve always been a country girl and then I was tucked into this tiny studio apartment in Paris. But it was fabulous, really fabulous. I’ve done a lot of travel to focus on my work since leaving Uni.”

Keeping to her country roots, Karlee now paints full-time in her studio on a rural property near Bellingen, inland of Coffs Harbour.

“Being a real bush girl, Southern Cross Uni really suited me. It was very welcoming. I liked its friendliness and character and how it supported me.”

Important information

ESOS www.aei.gov.au

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) monitor and regulate the higher education sector’s involvement with overseas students studying in Australia on Student Visas. Higher educational providers must meet minimum standards set by TEQSA to enable registration under the ESOS (Education Service for Overseas Students) Act. This protects Australia’s reputation for delivering quality education services and the interests of overseas students, by setting minimum standards and providing tuition and financial assurance.

The ESOS Act mandates a nationally consistent approach to registering education providers so that the quality of the tuition and care of students remains high. The professionalism and integrity of the industry is further strengthened by the ESOS Act’s interface with immigration law. This imposes visa-related reporting requirements on both students and providers.

The National Code is a set of nationally consistent standards that govern the protection of overseas students and delivery of courses to students by providers that are registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

CRICOSwww.cricos.deewr.gov.au

Higher educational providers in Australia must be registered to enrol overseas students in specific courses. Registered providers have a CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions for Overseas Students) code and a specific CRICOS course code. This registration guarantees the provider and the course meet the high standards necessary for overseas students.

Tuition Protection Servicewww.tps.gov.au

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is an initiative of the Australian Government to assist international students whose education providers are unable to fully deliver their course of study. The TPS ensures that international students are able to either complete their studies in another course or with another education provider or receive a refund of their unspent tuition fees.

Refunds or deferments Refunds (Refunds and Remission Policy) or deferment (Enrolment Deferment, Suspension and Cancellation Procedures – International Students) information can be found in the SCU Policy

library. scu.edu.au/policy

Tuition feesTuition Fees are listed in the Offer of Admission and correct at time of issue. They will be subject to an increase each calendar year and students are required to pay the new tuition fee each year.

OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)OSHC is a compulsory medical health insurance for international students studying in Australia. Medibank Private is SCU’s preferred provider. For alternative providers, refer to www.health.gov.au and search for ‘overseas student cover’.
