Kathryn Martell, Dean College of Business Welcome to the 40th Anniversary Honors Banquet! This special evening brings alumni, family, and friends together to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of students and faculty. We also welcome members of the CWU administration as well as the Advisory Board and Councils affiliated with the College of Business. It is a tradition at our Honors Banquet to invite an inspirational speaker to address our students. Tonight’s speaker is Steve Gutzler, President of Leadership Quest. Leadership Quest is a company based out of Seattle that seeks to develop strong and dynamic leaders from all areas of expertise from an array of companies. Steve has personally worked with CEO’s, Presidents, professional athletes and world class organizations. His knowledge and own expertise of leadership has sought recognition through his inspirational key note addresses, such as the one we will have the pleasure of hearing tonight, to his published books. We are very excited and honored to have him here tonight, and we look forward to his address. Tonight we honor our students and faculty for their excellence. The College of Business faculty and staff are dedicated to creating value and opportunity for our students by providing a high quality education at the Ellensburg campus and university centers in Lynnwood, Des Moines and the central region of Washington State. While all faculty members contribute in a variety of distinctive and significant ways, we recognize a few tonight for their excellence in teaching, advising, research, and professional service, respectively. In addition, some students are recognized for their high level of academic achievement and others for the quality of their contribution during an internship. “Congratulations” to the many outstanding students and faculty in the College of Business for a job well done!

James Gaudino, President Central Washington University On behalf of Central Washington University, I want to express how exceptionally proud we are of CWU’s nationally accredited College of Business (CB). Our faculty, students, alumni, and business partners have all distinguished themselves again this year through their demonstrated dedication to excellence.

Faculty members, including those who will be honored tonight, are the backbone of our success. They prepare

our students with knowledge of both business theory and practical applications.

The CB produces graduates who are able to quickly embark on successful careers, as borne out by national test scores, placement rates, and employer feedback. Some of this year’s top students will also be acknowledged this evening.

In addition, the CB is home to four innovative centers—the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Northwest Center for Organizational Research, Northwest Center for Sport Business, and Supply Chain Management Institute—which provide our students with additional educational advantages over their peers at similar colleges across the state and nation.

Our alumni safeguard the college’s excellent reputation through their outstanding performance in private- and public-sector positions and their community-service endeavors.

Our business partners have become essential external consultants and evaluators of our programs, both informally and formally. They provide an important connection, allowing the CB to learn of current and impending changes in the job market. It is through their advice and feedback that our programs further evolve and are strengthened.

In 2015, CWU’s CB is a shining example of a collaborative venture, which involves all of the entities listed above. On the occasion of this 22nd Annual Honors Banquet, I extend my sincere congratulations for all of the achievements of this past year and I encourage you to continue your exceptional work, which is a hallmark of our proud CB Tradition.

Distinguished Faculty A major event annually at CWU is the selec on of the Dis nguished University Professor for Teaching, for Research/Ar s c Accomplishment, and for Public Service. These Dis nguished Faculty Awards are the highest awards a ainable at the university and represent the highest level of performance. The awards are overseen by the CWU Faculty Senate through a nomina on process and funding for awards (for each category) is generously provided by the Office of the President. Twelve CB faculty have been honored as Dis nguished University Professor. Robert Carbaugh is the only faculty member from the University to earn the awards twice—once for teaching and once for research.

Tonight we celebrate Dr. Roy Savoian. Roy has been a leader in building the College of Business as it is today. Some of his accomplishments include the growing recogni on and success of our Supply Chain Management program, facilita ng the crea on of our four outreach centers (The Supply Chain Man‐agement Ins tute, The Northwest Center for Organiza onal Research, The Northwest Center for Sport Business, and of course the Ins tute for Innova‐on and Entrepreneurship), and playing a vital role in each while also helping

to earn the College of Business’ AACSB accredita on. Each of these accom‐plishments has helped push the College to greater success leaving students who study with us a worthwhile experience.

Dr. Savoian has truly invested himself in the College of Business, and for that we are grateful.

As he leaves us this year, we will remember him and his vision for the College. We will strive for these goals and con nue to mo vate our faculty, sponsors, and students to build upon the founda on that Dr. Roy Savoian helped to create.

Laura Milner joined the College of Business eight years ago. Since that day, her role in the College of Business’ success has been extremely vital. Laura has been ac vely involved with helping the college gain AACSB ac‐credita on and maintain it. This honor was a huge milestone in our jour‐ney to becoming a top rated business school and we could not have done it without the help of Dr. Milner.

Dr. Milner has not only been a part of the College of Business, but also served as Interim Director of the Office of the Interna onal Studies and Programs. Some of her accomplishments include being a recipient of the pres gious Fulbright scholarship. She worked with students from Colom‐bia, exchanging inspira onal ideas on innova on and social responsibility.

Her dedica on and mo va on to con nually improve our College will inspire the growth of the College of Business for years to come. We are extremely grateful for her service and cannot thank her enough for all her hard work.

Going to a new school was nothing different for me as I went to 4 differ‐ent elementary schools and I was able to adapt quickly. Feeling as though it would be difficult to make friends, I actually made friends within my first hour alone! This is when I realized that CWU has some of the friendliest stu‐dents I’ve ever met. I ini ally came to CWU for Accoun ng, but a er realiz‐ing that Accoun ng wasn’t my calling, I decided on Marke ng. My first 2 years have passed quickly thanks to all the studying and ac vi es like play‐ing indoor and outdoor soccer. It was my third year where things started to become surreal. I took my first Marke ng class by Dr. Wil‐son and a er every class, I would be asking her a marke ng ques on. She really helped me out in realizing that Marke ng was my true pas‐sion. CWU offered a lot of jobs on campus for students and I was a Call Center Representa ve for a quarter when I was offered to become the first College of Business Student Ambassador. A er accep ng the job, my experience at CWU has become even be er. I have had a chance to meet so many wonderful faculty, students, and employers because of the job. From mee ng with Expedia and ge ng to know how they market online to actually doing a project for Costco.com, all these ex‐periences have allowed for me to strengthen my resume and present to a great friend of mine who works at Nike in Beaverton, OR. He was amazed by all the experiences I have been given at CWU and this opened doors from an informa onal interview to an actual job inter‐view to then a job offer! While my me at CWU is ending soon, I am s ll exploring the possibili es of looking at other areas in Nike or the Portland area where I can begin my future chapter.

I first became president of the Economics Associa on towards the end of fall quarter. Dr. Sipic, being the club advisor, met with me several mes to gage my program ideas for the club, understand my interests in monetary economics and the Fed, and get to know me as a student. That same quarter I had applied for an internship at the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank. I had one interview and didn’t get the posi on. During winter quarter, Dr. Sipic in‐formed me that I was chosen to a end the Quinnipiac Global Asset Manage‐ment Educa on (GAME) forum in New York City with three other students and himself. New York was a blast, I learned a lot about New York and Wall Street’s culture, and I got to know Dr. Sipic be er. We met Amar, a deriva‐ves trader at Barclays, and Chris an Delgado, Dr. Elvin Delgado’s brother.

Simply put, the GAME forum was a huge networking opportunity. The last day of the forum, Dr. Sipic encouraged me to apply for an internship at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, where his friend from University of Oregon, Dr. John Kandrac, works as an economist. When I returned home to Vashon Island for spring break, I immediately worked on comple ng the applica on for the Fed. Meanwhile, Dr. Sipic traveled to Washington D.C., met with Dr. Kandrac, and recommended me for the posi on. Fast forward to spring quarter. I received an email from the Fed to schedule a phone in‐terview with Dr. Kandrac. During the interview Dr. Kandrac and I conversed about a project– crea ng regression models to infer if the Home Affordable Refinance Program really helped the middle‐class during the financial crisis. Less than twenty‐minutes a er the interview concluded I got a phone call with an internship offer, and I took it. The theme of this story: build profes‐sional rela onships and cul vate them and get involved. Good grades and a resume can only go so far to impress a poten al employer. I am very grate‐ful and excited to work in Washington D.C. this summer, but I wouldn’t have this opportunity without one of my professors. Get involved, make connec‐ons. The single theme to take away from this story is the importance of

networking and building rela onships with your professors. Ge ng involved in clubs and organiza ons in your major is key to recogni on from profes‐sors and signals your desire to go beyond the classroom.

I a ended the career fair that was put on by the College of Business back in October of 2013. That event opened the doors for my profession‐al career as I met a recruiter for Northwestern Mutual that day. Northwestern Mutual's Financial Representa ve Internship is rated top 10 in the na on and has held this honor for 18 years in a row. A er going through the interview process and acquiring my life insur‐ance producer's license through the state, I officially became con‐tracted and began my internship in the summer of 2014. A er six months of hard work I received some na onal acknowledgement for my success within the internship. I was informed that I qualified for Winter Camp 2015. Winter Camp is an annual trip awarded to the top 100 interns in the company and focuses on developing us both per‐sonally and professionally. Being a top 100 intern means that I ranked in the top 6% of interns throughout the en re na on. Qualifying for this event allowed me to experience a company sponsored trip to the home office in Milwaukee where I got to meet the other top interns from all over the United States and also learn from from predecessors on how to take my career to the next level. Represen ng Central Washington University at this event was an honor. None of this would have been possible without the College of Business pu ng on events like the career fair and giving students the opportunity to jump start their careers. Since then I have been offered a full me job as a Finan‐cial Adviser with Northwestern Mutual star ng immediately a er I graduate.

Accounting David Ashton, Accounting, Lynnwood I worked in a Costco warehouse for over 8 years. A week after winter quarter, I received a promotion and began a new job at Costco's corporate office in the accounts payable reconciliations department. I plan on exploring other accounting departments and the inventory margin analysis department over the next several years to get a bigger picture of Costco's business and become a more well-rounded employee before moving up Costco's corporate ladder into management. It has been a long road, but my many years of study and hard work have begun to pay off. Dana Grieb, Accounting, Ellensburg I’m graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting this June. I plan to go into the MPA program at Central next year. My career goal is to teach accounting. Next year, I’ll be the graduate teaching assistant, which I’m very excited for. Also, next year, I’ll be the President of CWU’s Beta Alpha Psi. I’m also a Jazzercise instructor in Walla Walla and Ellensburg. I’m a single mother a 4-year-old daughter named Kira. She goes to preschool on campus at the ECLC. She is solely responsible for my motivation to succeed. Greg Stachowiak, Accounting, Des Moines As I was finishing up my DTA at Bellevue College, my adviser there told me that with my grades I could go to any school I wanted. My first and only choice was CWU Des Moines, and today I have no doubt that I made the right decision. Currently I am studying for the CPA exams, and feel well equipped because of my education. On June 8th, I start employment at BDO USA LLP. The particular office that I will be working at recently joined BDO USA LLP, and consequently will be experiencing tremendous growth. This means there will be plenty of advancement opportunities. I did not imagine such a wonderful outcome resulting from my enrollment at CWU. Thank you to the faculty, especially for the time you spent on weekends and outside of your regular office hours. Thank you to the staff, I learned a lot from you too, not to mention the job that career services helped connect me with. Thank you to my fellow students, for making the experience at CWU so enjoyable. Josie Wright, Accounting, MPA After graduating I plan on taking the CPA exam this summer and then in October I will start working at Clark Nuber as an audit associate. Clark Nuber is the 6th largest accounting firm in the Puget Sound area and has the largest amount of non-profit clientele. Some of my notable accomplishments include: Beta Alpha Psi President 2014-2015, Beta Alpha Psi Vice President 2013-2014, Graduate Assistant for the Accounting Department 2014-2015 and Site Coordinator of CWU's Volunteer Tax Assistance Program Winter 2015.

David Ashton, Supply Chain Management, Lynnwood (see Accounting Award Winners for biography) Andrea Aswin, Leadership and Management, Lynnwood While attending classes, Andrea has also been working as a functional analyst for a payroll team. She's already in tune with the technical side of the business, and is now learning about organizing and working with people in addition to systems. She has been improving her weaker areas and becoming a well-rounded professional with the help of the Leadership and Management specialization. Andrea is hoping to move into a broader role where she can apply these new-found skills after graduation. Bryce Canfield, Supply Chain Management, Des Moines After graduation I hope to find a career that acknowledges and appreciates my extreme loyalty. I will not be simply picking the highest paying job that comes my way. On the contrary, I will be looking for a career that I feel will challenge me and could provide me more fulfillment than just a paycheck. I would be specifically looking for a leadership/management position with room for growth within an established corporation. As for my background, I was raised by a single mother, Susan Canfield, who was my one and only inspiration. She raised me completely on her own without any contribution from my father or anyone else. The fact that she was able to work full-time for Boeing and raise me has made a huge impact on me. Rebecca Duhamel, Supply Chain Management, Ellensburg Rebecca Duhamel is from Wenatchee, WA and transferred to Central Washington University in September of 2012. She was a member of the winning Boeing Northwest Case Study competition group and also participated in the Denver Operations Stimulus. While at CWU she also competed on the track and field team. After graduation, Rebecca will be joining the Boeing Company as a Procurement Agent in the Commercial Airplanes Division. Joshua Krick, Leadership and Management, Ellensburg Joshua plans to complete his double major in Law & Justice and Business Administration with specialization in Management & Organization in fall 2015. Six years later I'm coming to the end of the journey at CWU, and I've learned so much, all of which I've been able to apply to my real world in helping my family with their business. The final class in my journey was Marketing Research, and once again it was exactly the right class at the right time and what I needed for my family’s latest venture. Took seven years, but I earned a Bachelor's in Business and Accounting. I had hoped to finish by age 50, but I turned 51 end of February and completed my last class in March 2015.

I moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2011 and decided to complete my education. Having attended college in California, my associate’s degree did not meet all of the lower division requirements for CWU so I attended class at Pierce College to com-plete my DTA requirements while attending classes at the CWU Des Moines Campus. Two and a half years later and numerous nights in class, I am now in process of com-pleting my last two capstone classes in order to finish my SCM Management degree. After that, I plan on attending a master’s program either locally or abroad. My plans after graduation are to move up into a Supply Chain Management position either at KGM or elsewhere with the eventual goal of becoming Director of Supply Chain. I feel my work experience as well as the courses I have attended at CWU has posi-tioned me to succeed in today’s ever changing business environment.

Laura Thompson, Business Administration, Des Moines

My most notable accomplishment is raising three delightful children into wonderful adults. I have faced many challenges as a single parent while successfully managing a career in technology, and always regretted not finishing my degree. Now happily married to a loving, supportive husband, I had returned to school three years ago, with the goal of completing my degree by my 50th birthday. Although I turned 50 in Au-gust of 2014, I am happy to say I am graduating BEFORE my 51st birthday. I com-pleted my degree on top of a demanding job as an IT Applications Manager, and most recently as Senior Consultant for Deloitte Consulting. I plan to finish my career in technology, specifically supporting Workforce Management systems and solu-tions. My business education at CWU will help to continue to drive technology solu-tions for my clients most pressing business needs."

Lan (Wendy) Do, Marketing, Lynnwood Before entering the College of Business, Wendy attended EDCC. Following her fami-ly’s wish, she enrolled in the College of Business at CWU Lynnwood, but selected Marketing as her concentration because of its close relationship to psychology, an area of keen interest to her. Wendy completed her degree requirements in Fall 2014. She is now planning to enter the workforce for several years to prepare herself for graduate-level study. Her long-term goal is a career in the entertainment industry. Brendan Foor, Marketing, Ellensburg During my senior year at Central Washington University, I was not only a full time student but I was also allocating a lot of my time towards my internship with North-western Mutual. I spent everyday meeting with as many business professionals as I could in the pursuit of building an extensive network for after I graduate. Now that graduation is finally here, I plan to hit the ground running as a Financial Adviser with Northwestern Mutual. My practice is going to revolve around an integrated approach to financial planning that is fueled by the plethora of relationships I've developed during my time in the internship. Congratulations Kevin! The Dean’s Award recognizes a student who enhances the CWU mission by demon-strating qualities that include character, integrity, problem solving and initiative. Kev-in Moran has exemplified all of these characters and more. This past year Kevin has been instrumental in outreach programs to the Tri Cities high schools by facilitating informational sessions, classroom demonstrations of marketing tactics and acted as a liaison for our admission’s office. He was also pivotal in awarding over $30,000 in Central scholarships to students in the Hispanic Academics Achievers Program (HAAP) Tri Cities.

I currently have a 3.92 GPA and will be receiving dual Bachelor of Science Degrees in Business Administration with a Finance specialization and Economics with a Manageri-al specialization. I am in the Army ROTC program and am currently enlisted in the Washington Army National Guard. I will be commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserves after graduation. Danielle Brandli-Business Administration Specialization in Supply Chain Management CWU Ellensburg From the Student: I experienced a great learning opportunity as a Supply Chain Analyst at Crane Aero-space and Electronics during the summer of 2014. Among other projects, I created a Supplier Financial Risk Analysis tool that the entire company (Crane Co.) would use. It’s pretty cool to have that kind of impact as an intern. I gained this internship with the guidance and support of CWU faculty; sometimes, it is about who you know! Other than that, I am graduating in June with a degree in Business Admin-istration with specializations in Finance and Supply Chain Management and a minor in Economics. Upon graduation, I will be pursuing a position in the financial planning industry.
