Message from the Dean

Dear friends, This year’s Community Awards Banquet comes as I am completing my first term as Dean and Executive Officer for the Augustana Campus. Each day I discover new reasons why Becky and I made exactly the right decision in coming to Camrose, and I want to thank the many of you who offered input on my reappointment or have offered congratulations since its announcement. The partnerships that Augustana has with the community and the generous support that we

receive from community donors continue to inspire me. I am both humbled and grateful. Looking forward, the vision that colleagues and I wish to share is one where these community connections become a foundation for even more ambitious plans and dreams. Much of our current thinking is captured by the term “pathways”--not only how we can build pathways to university by ensuring that Augustana remains affordable and accessible, but how we can design and support student pathways through university that connect them to communi-ty needs and lead to post-baccalaureate pathways into essential professions and useful careers in rural and Aboriginal communities. The rhythms of our new academic calendar—with compressed blocks and longer sessions—will allow Augustana to expand the connections between academic coursework and community-based service and research. But as our students become more engaged with the community, we also want to contin-ue to build a community presence on campus. That was, of course, part of the vision for the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. And it is the vision for the “Open Sci” concept that now is driving plans for our future Sci-ence Building project. My colleagues and I continue to need your ideas on both fronts. How can our students serve important needs in the community while advancing their own education? How can Augustana continue to improve service to the community through enhanced programming on campus? As many of you know, I often brag about the wonderful “town-gown” relation-ship between Camrose and surrounding communities and Augustana. In this regard, we out-perform every other university where I have worked. But there is so much more we can do. I invite you to dream with us. Thank you for your generous support and for your ideas.

Best wishes,

Allen Berger, Dean

The Community Awards Program Our History

The Community Awards program was established in 1973 to assist in making post-secondary studies possible for students with limited resources and to attract students to the then Camrose Lutheran College.

An initial committee of community members and college officials was responsible for recruiting gifts from the business community to fund awards. Working with the community, the Committee promoted two award funds – the Current Scholarship Fund, now called Annual Awards, and the Scholarship Foundation, which held the Community Scholarship Fund and Associated Endowments.

The program met with great success in its early years and that success continues – awards established in those first years are celebrating 44 years of commit-ment to post-secondary education!

The awards program today continues to reflect the vision and goals of the founding members. Administered through the Development and Student Awards Offices at Augustana Campus and in partnership with Student Financial Services on the University’s North Campus, we continue to invite interested individuals, businesses, and community organizations to invest in our students.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all our Community Awards Program donors – past and present, for your vision and commitment to fostering the education of our students.

The Augustana Community Awards Program

Annually Funded Awards Annual Awards and Bursaries receive funding each year from committed individuals, businesses and organizations who have pledged to support an award they have created. In 2015, over $120,000 in gifts were received to fund awards and bursaries.

Endowed Awards Associated Endowments are established for many reasons – for example, to ensure the annual funding to an existing award in perpetuity, to recognize a loved one, or to create a living legacy. The U of A invests these funds and the principal is never touched, only the earned interest is spent to support the award. In 2015, the interest earned from Augustana’s endowments allowed us to fund awards totaling $104,500.

Bursaries Bursaries are established by donors who wish to fund a student primarily on the basis of financial need. Bursaries may be funded annually or through establishing an endowment.

The impact of our donor-funded Community Awards Program is truly remarkable! This past year, 165 students were the grateful recipients of donor-funded student awards, scholarships, and bursaries totaling almost $225,000. This is over and above faculty-funded awards or other sources of funding our students are eligible to receive.

2015 Entrance Citation Recipients Awarded to students entering an undergraduate degree program at Augustana Faculty based on superior academic achievement (minimum average of 95% or equivalent) in grades 10, 11, & 12. Receipt of funding for the second, third, and fourth years is contingent upon achieving a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a full normal course load of which at least 9 credits per term must be taken at Augustana Faculty.

Augustana Dean’s Entrance Citation

Rebecca Pospolita

Rebecca Pospolita of Wainwright heard about Au-

gustana from her sister, so when she was considering

schools for her Bachelor of Arts in English, the campus

near her hometown was at the top of her list. “The

Dean’s Entrance Citation took a big chunk out of my

tuition that I suddenly didn’t need to worry about,”

she explains, “and I received four additional awards

including one from Wilton Psychological Services, so I

was very excited!”

Rebecca plans to make the most of her time at Au-

gustana, including international travel and community

service-learning opportunities, and intends to follow

her Bachelor of Arts with a Masters in Speech Lan-

“I come from a small town in southern Alberta,” says

Bachelor of Science student Garrett Rawleigh from Vul-

can, “so the biggest attraction to Augustana was the

high level of education available on a small scale cam-

pus. Small class sizes make me feel more at home, and

the community here is unlike any I have experienced.”

The Betsy Ness Scott Entrance Citation Garrett received

is very important to his education, as were his three

other awards. “I come from a low income family,” he

says, “and any money received makes my education less

of a burden on my parents.” Busy with his classes and

the weekly bible study group he co-founded, Garrett is

taking his education day by day.

Gunvor and Erik Mygind Entrance Citation Jasohna Haukenfrers

Jasohna Haukenfrers from Prince Albert, SK, picked

Augustana for its small campus and amazing music pro-

fessors. She took a road trip the October before she

started university and got the chance to meet her pro-

spective faculty advisor, Dr. Milton Schlosser. The Gun-

vor and Erik Mygind Entrance Citation she received

means that she is able to cover her expenses as she

takes her Bachelor of Arts in Music.

“What it means for me is peace of mind – I can actually

afford school!” says the future music therapist with a

smile. While she’s not fond of sharing a room in 1st

West, she loves the opportunity to make friends and meet the community outside her

classes.

We wish to gratefully acknowledge the many gifts we receive each year that celebrate events and

honour and remember loved ones. These gifts embrace our student recipients into the "circle of

life" of our donors.

THANK YOU for creating and augmenting opportunity for our students and thank you for

thinking of Augustana and your Community Awards Program.

Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award The Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award is granted twice a year to stu-dents whose work has been presented at the Student Conference. The award recognizes the best independent student work over the course of a term. The nomination is to be submitted by the mentor of a student who is completing a for-credit independent study who also presented at the Student Conference. A com-mittee consisting of two to four faculty members, and a student member from one of the committees adjudicate the award.

Erin Specht - Winter 2015 The Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award in Winter

2015 went to Erin Specht (BSc Environmental Science ’15)

for an intense legislative review. Dr. Glynnis Hood has been

exploring using beavers for wetland restoration in the prov-

ince, and Erin researched reclamation policies across Canada

and the United States.

“I searched for policy supporting the use of beavers to re-

store wetland ecosystems as well as beaver management

technology, specifically flood control devices, and how their

use is supported,” the Pigeon Lake Regional High School

graduate says. “The project was quite intense, and involved

reading a LOT of legal documents.”

On the evening of her presentation, Erin was a little surprised. “Despite the pressure of

presenting to my professors, I felt confident because I was the expert in the room on

that topic,” she says. “That was a good feeling. Where else do you get to carry out

graduate-level research in your third and fourth year?”

Alexandra Malley - Fall 2015 Fourth year student Alexandra Malley from Airdrie received

the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award in Fall 2015

for her project, The Melanoma Cell Adhesion Molecule: a

Potential Therapeutic Target for Multiple Sclerosis. Gradu-

ating this year with her Bachelor of Science in Molecular

Biology, she embraced the directed reading course with Dr.

Neil Haave.

“I was looking into some current treatment options and

some of the inherent issues associated with their prolonged

use,” she explains, “as well as some novel potential alterna-

tive treatments, for which I wrote a proposal for future re-

search as part of my project.”

Alexandra hopes to use the skills she has gained at Augustana to pursue a career in the

medical field, either as a researcher or a practitioner.
