THE DEAN'S MESSAGE

2

I would like to welcome you to the 47th anniversary of Augustana’s Community Awards Program and to express my deeply felt gratitude to those, among you, who contribute to the success of this significant annual event in the life of this remarkable institution. Dean Allen Berger shared with me—prior to his departure in June 2019—his enthusiasm for this program, emphasizing the impact of your contributions to the education and training of Augustana’s next generation of student leaders.

These are challenging times at

universities Province-wide. To tell you the truth, last summer when I was getting ready to make the move from Brandon University in Manitoba, I did expect that the recent provincial election would result in modest budget cuts to higher education. Unfortunately, these cuts have been draconic rather than modest.

Yet, when I look around Augustana and discover the enormous goodwill and the sense of institutional identity, promise and pride—as well as the thirst for renewal—I am reminded of why I made the decision to join

Dear Augustana supporters and friends,

Augustana. Apart, then, from the short to medium-term pains we must endure and the budget cuts we must absorb over the next few years, it seems to me that we are poised for ensuring the institutional momentum that has helped us, over the past 15 years, to become not only the 18th Faculty of the University of Alberta but also a legitimate, high-achieving, distinct and equal partner with other Faculties.

Seven months into my tenure and knowing what I know about Augustana’s (but also the U of A’s) unique educational standing and its focus on an intellectual dialogue among learners and teachers, staff and community partners, I am enthusiastic about the possibility of contributing personally to its continued development and growth. With your momentous and much-needed help, I wish to promote a vibrant and supportive learning and research environment; to cultivate a culture of excellence in teaching, research and creative activity; to support student-centred intellectual and experiential learning; to foster diversity, inclusivity and equity; and to celebrate Augustana’s commitment to its core values. With confidence and pride in what

we have and shall achieve together, I look to you for helping all of us at Augustana achieve these goals—and especiallystudent success.

I am cognizant—now at Augustana more so than I have been for the past three decades—of the fragile nature and origins of the four major sources of income that support Canadian universities: government support, tuition fees, federal and provincial research grants and endowments/gifts. In these challenging times, contributions like yours continue to make it possible for students to attend Augustana to receive a world-class education that makes a difference in their own lives and also in the lives of the communities in which they establish themselves. I look forward to meeting many of you and to thanking you in person for investing in the growth of Augustana and the success of so many of our students. Thank you so much for your vision (and that of a myriad of past contributors), commitment and generosity in fostering the education of Augustana’s meritorious, gifted students.

AT A GLANCE — THE COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM

This past year, 183 students were the grateful recipients of 233donor-funded student awards, scholarships and bursaries totaling just over $302,000. This is over and above faculty-funded awards or other sources of funding our students are eligible to receive—and it is all because of our generous donors!

Toward the close of this evening’s program, all guests will be asked to rise and donors will present award certificates to their student(s) while remaining at their tables.

In the current economic environment, award support is valued and appreciated by Augustana students. Your gifts support students now and into the future. Both today and always, thank you for your support.

We also wish to gratefully acknowledge the kind donations we receive in support of student awards each year that celebrate events and honour and remember loved ones.

We have endeavored to make the information in this program as accurate as possible. Please accept our apologies if your name or information has been misspelled or omitted, and please let us know so we might correct our error.
