James Gaudino, President Central Washington University
On behalf of Central Washington University, I want to
express how exceptionally proud we are of CWU’s
nationally accredited College of Business (CB). Our
faculty, students, alumni, and business partners have all
distinguished themselves again this year through their
demonstrated dedication to excellence.
Faculty members, including those who will be honored
tonight, are the backbone of our success. They prepare our students with knowledge
of both business theory and practical applications. The CB produces graduates who
are able to quickly embark on successful careers, as borne out by national test
scores, placement rates, and employer feedback. Some of this year’s top students
will also be acknowledged this evening.
In addition, the CB is home to four innovative centers—the Institute for Innovation
and Entrepreneurship, Northwest Center for Organizational Research, Northwest
Center for Sport Business, and Supply Chain Management Institute—which
provide our students with additional educational advantages over their peers at
similar colleges across the state and nation.
Our alumni safeguard the college’s excellent reputation through their outstanding
performance in private- and public-sector positions and their community-service
endeavors. That, most certainly, includes Tim Searing, tonight’s keynote speaker
and member of the CB Advisory Board.
Our business partners have become essential external consultants and evaluators of
our programs, both informally and formally. They provide an important connection,
allowing the CB to learn of current and impending changes in the job market. It is
through their advice and feedback that our programs further evolve and are
strengthened.
In 2014, CWU’s CB is a shining example of a collaborative venture, which
involves all of the entities listed above. On the occasion of this 21st Annual Honors
Banquet, I extend my sincere congratulations for all of the
achievements of this past year and I encourage you to
continue your exceptional work, which is a hallmark of
our proud CB Tradition.
Marilyn Levine, Provost/VP for
Academic & Student Life Central Washington University
It is my honor to welcome you to the 2014 CWU College of
Business Honors Banquet. The College of Business has had

Mission CWU's College of Business faculty and staff create value and opportunity for our students by focusing on quality in undergraduate education at the Ellensburg campus and university centers in the Puget Sound and central regions of Washington state. We accomplish this through emphasis on excellence in teaching, strengthened by faculty research and supported by professional service.
Vision The College of Business will be recognized as a premier learning community creating an environment in which students, faculty and staff reach their full potential.
Statement of Conduct The College of Business is a learning community committed to a set of core values based on integrity, respect and responsibility that guide our interactions.
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Only the best business schools earn AACSB International accreditation, and Central Washington University is home to one of them. When the CB received its accreditation from AACSB, it joined the ranks of the best business schools in the world— less than five percent of the business schools globally.
The AACSB is the longest-serving, largest global-accrediting organization for business schools and serves as an informational resource for students who need to consider the best business schools for their academic goals.
Employers recognize the value of a degree from an AACSB-accredited school. When they see a resume from a CWU College of Business graduate, they will know it means that the applicant has studied under professors who conduct research regularly, and possess knowledge of current business ideas and methods. Bottom-line: graduates are “job-ready”.

Distinguished Faculty
A major event annually at CWU is the selection of the Distinguished
University Professor for Teaching, for Research/Artistic
Accomplishment, and for Public Service. These Distinguished Faculty
Awards are the highest awards attainable at the university and
represent the highest level of performance. The awards are overseen
by the CWU Faculty Senate through a nomination process and funding
for awards (for each category) is generously provided by the Office of
the President. Twelve CB faculty have been honored as Distinguished
University Professor. Robert Carbaugh is the only faculty member
from the college to earn the awards twice—once for teaching and once
for research.

a very successful year, winning awards for faculty research, student accomplishments,
and continued excellence in teaching and service. The faculty, students, alumni, and
the wonderful advisory board all are helping to continue and expand upon this
growing reputation of quality.
To the students—I know that graduates of the program will be leaving with key
knowledge and skills that they will be contributing to the economic vitality in our
communities. I wish you every success in your careers as you go forward.
Kathryn Martell, Dean College of Business
Welcome to the 21st annual College of Business Honors
Banquet! This special evening brings alumni, family, and
friends together to celebrate the achievements and
accomplishments of students and faculty. We also
welcome members of the CWU administration as well as
the Advisory Board and Councils affiliated with the
College of Business.
It is a tradition at our Honors Banquet to invite an
inspirational speaker to address our students. Tonight’s
speaker, Tim Searing, is a successful professional, an alumnus, and an active
member of the College of Business Advisory Board. In addition to his service to
the College, he also serves on the Advisory Boards of the Salvation Army King
County, the Park Commissioners for the City of Renton, and the Washington
Athletic club. Tim, who is a CPA, recently retired from McGladrey where he was a
partner heading up Family Wealth Services for the Northwest. Tim guided
clients—ranging from high net worth individuals with multi-generational estate
plans to owners of small businesses—to maximize their wealth and transfer it to
others without a large tax burden. While at McGladrey, Tim recognized the value
of sharing knowledge and was active in mentoring accountants at the start of their
careers. We are delighted that he will continue to contribute to the development of
accounting professionals by teaching in our Accounting program next year.
Tonight we honor our students and faculty for their excellence. The College of
Business faculty and staff are dedicated to creating value and opportunity for our
students by providing a high quality education at the Ellensburg campus and
university centers in Lynnwood, Des Moines and the central region of Washington
State. While all faculty members contribute in a variety of distinctive and
significant ways, we recognize a few tonight for their excellence in teaching,
advising, research, and professional service, respectively. In addition, some
students are recognized for their high level of academic achievement and others for
the quality of their contribution during an internship.
“Congratulations” to the many outstanding students and faculty in the College of
Business for a job well done!

“Steps to Success...Lessons
Learned”
Tim Searing
Partner
McGladrey LLP
Tim graduated from Central Washington University in 1971 (when it
was known as Central Washington State College) with a Bachelors
degree in business with a specialty in accounting. He earned his
Master of Science degree in Federal taxation from Golden Gate
University in 1984.
Upon graduating from Central, Tim took a position with a small
accounting firm in his hometown of Longview, WA and enjoyed
performing financial and operational audits all over the world. In 1978,
he purchased his own accounting firm in Renton and operated Searing,
Gitelson, Keeslar for 14 years, ultimately merging into a large regional
firm which was then absorbed into McGladrey LLP currently the 5th
largest CPA firm in the country. Tim retired as a partner from
McGladrey on April 30, 2014 after over 43 years in public accounting.
In his recent capacity with McGladrey, Tim was one of two partners
heading up the Family Wealth Services group for the Northwest
offices and was a primary driving force in setting up this practice.
Family Wealth Services serves high net worth individuals with estate,
gift and income tax planning and compliance. Tim advised clients in
the transfer of wealth from one generation to the next or in some cases
- 13 - - 12 -
down several generations which has saved families large amounts
of estate tax. Tim’s background is not exclusively in serving high
net worth clients but also with smaller owner managed companies
in the retail, manufacturing and commercial real estate businesses.
In many cases, these smaller businesses grew to the point that they
ultimately required more sophisticated planning. Tim also assisted
these clients with the successful sales of their business to larger
enterprises.
As a leader of his CPA practice, Tim recognizes the value of
sharing knowledge and growing the careers of younger accountants.
He believes and practices mentoring and has been a strong support
to those wishing to advance their careers.
Tim is a CPA and a registered investment advisor. His wife
Kimberly is also a CPA and they enjoy their three grown children
(none are CPAs) and four grandchildren (there is still hope).
Retirement has meant more time for his passions of fly fishing, golf
and enjoying his Cle Elum cabin. He is also involved with
community and organizations that provide necessary services to for
the greater good. He is a member of the CWU College of Business
Advisory Board, incoming Chair of the Salvation Army King
County Advisory Board, past Chair (and current member) of the
Park Commissioners for the City of Renton and is a member of the
Athletic Committee of the Washington Athletic Club.
Tim has seen the accounting profession change vastly in the last
half century including the transformation from green ledger
workpapers to the numerous electronic formats and has remained
proud of his accounting profession.
