This July, the Cooper Union offers a unique opportunity to prepare for college-level writing so you can start school knowing what the expectations are and how to meet them.
TheCooperUnionSummerWritingProgramgivesyouthetoolsyouneedto:• Work with challenging texts • Use writing to generate and develop
ideas• Move beyond the five-paragraph
essay • Develop arguments and support
them with evidence• Start college with confidence
Choose between an on-campus class in New York City’s East Village or a real-time virtual class that lets you interact with fellow students and the instructor. Classes run Monday-Thursday, July 6th-23rd.
Boththeonlineandon-campusclassesoffer:• Small class size, personal attention
and ongoing feedback • A combination of discussion and hands-on writing practice• A range of techniques and tools that make writing more approachable• Experienced, enthusiastic instructors
Collegewritingisdifferentfromhighschoolwriting.Findoutwhattheexpectationsareforcollege-levelwritingandhowtomeetthem.
Cooper Union Summer Writing Program Director Martha Schulman explains: “In high school, students need to show that they’ve read and understood the text. In college, while this baseline knowledge remains essential, students are expected to analyze the language and structure of a text and make an evidence-based claim about it.” She continues: “College should be filled with new experiences and new expectations: that’s kind of the point. But if students don’t have what they need to meet those expectations, it can feel overwhelming. Cooper Union Summer Writing students walk into their first-year writing classes with the tools they need to do well.”
SWP classes are kept small so every student receives extensive individual attention. Homeschoolers who’ve used conventional high school writing curricula will find the course useful in replacing formulaic writing with close reading and analysis. Homeschoolers who’ve done more free-form writing work will learn techniques that help them structure a paper and develop a clear argument. Students finish class knowing how to break writing into manageable pieces, get their ideas on the page, and develop and support an effective argument.
Classes meet on campus in New York City’s East Village or online wherever you are.

Former students say: “I learned the process of writing,
to always ask questions, and to
deepen my ideas.”
•
“I very much enjoyed this class. I
found it very helpful.”
•
“It’s been incredibly
helpful with every aspect of
one of the most difficult things
to do, write.”
