First Grade 2015-2016 School Year
Encourage your young reader to have fun reading this summer!
Students entering First Grade are required to read or listen to five books over
the summer. Choose at least one book from each of the three categories below:
1. Any picture book-pictures heavily support the text
2. Any first reader-leveled readers (e.g. Level 1 & 2)
3. Any non-fiction/concept book – examples:
Recycling
What living things need
Characteristics of objects and how they move
Numbers, shapes, patterns, opposites
Animals
Neighborhoods
National Symbols
Citizenship & Community
See instructions on the Summer Reading cover letter concerning the activities. The Medina County Public Libraries will be able to assist you in your choices.
Fun Summer Reading Activities
These suggestions can be used to help enhance your family’s Summer Reading experience:
*Visit educational websites *Play a board game
*Bike ride to the park and read *Write your own story
*Read the map at the zoo or amusement *Write a letter to your park and the menu at a restaurant grandparents, relatives or friends *Go to the library and participate in the *Talk about the book you read to summer programs your parents and friends

Ask questions!
What is the title?
Who are the characters?
Who is the main character?
Who is the author?
What is the setting?
Look for sight words in the story.
Is there a problem in the story?
Is there a solution in the story?
Is the story real or make-believe?
Show me something on the page that begins with ____ (a letter
sound).
