LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF GREATER HARTFORD 2 2015-16 ANNUAL REPORT
Letter from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Those were the words of one of our students, Ashley Rodriguez, as she addressed the crowd of 200 supporters who enjoyed this year’s Read. Learn. Grow Gala. Dalva Machado also spoke, an ESOL student whose mastery of English earned her admission into a certification course in her field. She held the crowd captive with her humor and new-found confidence. I’d never been more proud, as I sat there, listening to these students who had progressed so far. It was also a moment of pure gratefulness to all of you, who have chosen to invest in our adult learners. Because of you Ashley is on her way to college, a role model for her young son. Dalva is realizing her dream career. Because of you, our students are transforming their futures, and our programs are thriving. Thank you.
Launched just a few months ago, with significant support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, our new Career Pathways program helps students move forward toward their academic and career goals. With career counseling staff to guide them, students plan their futures and get the support and training they need to move ahead. Several employers are partnering with us to provide internships and employment opportunities. Many are especially interested in our bilingual students as employees in call centers, medical settings, and customer service. We are developing classes to prepare students for specific job training and credentialing programs. A growing community of volunteers from the corporate human resources world is helping our students develop those soft skills so critical in landing that perfect job.
In partnership with Sodexo, FoodShare and New Covenant United Methodist Church, we now offer a food service job training program at the Wickham Center. While continuing their literacy studies, students learn about nutrition and food handling from a trained chef. They gain hands-on experience, preparing and serving biweekly community meals at New Covenant. They study to earn ServSafe certification, an industry-recognized credential.
The work we do every day makes this a better place for all of us to live. But a fully literate Greater Hartford will not happen overnight, nor can we do it alone. Thank you for being our partners in this vision. Together, progress is possible. Just ask Ashley and Dalva.
Carol “CJ” HaussExecutive Director
Dear Friends,
At LVGH I learned I can be anyone I want to be. I made it this far, and I can take it even farther. You helped me change my life, and my son’s life.

L Lucy was an art professor and artist living in China.
She traveled back and forth from China to Tennessee,
Nebraska and Connecticut so that her husband could
work at different universities, teaching Chinese.
She found it difficult living in the US without speaking English. The
only words she knew were “hello” and “goodbye.” Sadly, someone
told Lucy that she should stop trying to speak the language because
her English was so poor. Feeling frustrated, Lucy became more and
more homesick. She knew she was going to be in the States for a
long time, and was determined to become acclimated to the culture
and the language.
Committed to learning English, Lucy made friends with her
neighbors, which forced her to converse. “It was hard at first, but I
knew I was learning and my English was getting better,” said Lucy.
While living in Nebraska, Lucy enrolled in English class. “The class
in Nebraska was a big help to me. It made me believe that I could
learn English.”
By the time she moved to Connecticut, Lucy’s English had
improved, but not to the level to which she aspired. She learned
about LVGH from her neighbor, and on that very day, she signed
up for classes. LVGH offered Lucy many valuable learning
opportunities. “Finding LVGH has opened so many doors for me.
LVGH is a very welcoming place. I have never attended a program
like this before. Without LVGH, I don’t know if I would be able to
sit down with you today and have this conversation.”
“Finding LVGH has opened so many doors for me. LVGH is a very welcoming place.”
Lucy is a very talented artist. As resident artist at Farmington
Valley Arts Center, she painted and displayed her art at their
gallery. Earlier this year, she hosted her first exhibit, at Capital
Community College. She hopes to get a job as an art teacher.
Determined to keep practicing her English, she knows many more
doors will open for her as her fluency improves.
“The classes offered here are much better than any English classes
I have attended before. The tutors have become my friends, and I
really appreciate that.”

Volunteer SpotlightMary-Jane Gately
Over the years, many tutors at Literacy Volunteers of
Greater Hartford have made a significant impact on our
students, agency and community. This year, Mary-Jane
Gately reached a milestone at LVGH as our first tutor to reach 25
years of service. Over her tenure, LVGH has seen numerous changes,
including shifting from one-on-one tutoring to small group class
settings, moving locations, and doubling in staff size. LVGH has
grown into one of the most respected literacy programs in the state.
“It is interesting how LVGH has evolved,” she notes.
“I feel a sense of pride that I was able to contribute to their success.”
Born in Colorado, Mary Jane graduated from college and accepted
a teaching position in Hawaii where she thought she was going to
stay for many years until she met her future husband. Together, they
ended up in Connecticut. An avid reader, Mary Jane always had a
passion for the English language. One day she saw an article in the
paper that the Red Cross was looking for people to teach English to
adults. As someone who has always been interested in language
and the immigrant experience, this opportunity sparked an interest
in Mary Jane. She signed on to start teaching. “I can’t imagine
what it would be like to move to a new country and have to create
a new identity for oneself. Not knowing the language or having any
family can be very challenging, and I thought that I wanted to help
others make the process of moving to a new country a bit easier.”

Through her experience tutoring adults, she was gaining knowledge
about English immersion programs and was now looking to tutor
somewhere new. Mary Jane heard about LVGH from a friend and
thought it would be a perfect fit with her experience and interest in
the immigrant population. On her first day she was assigned to tutor
a man from Sudan. After a few sessions with no progress, it came
to light that this student was having trouble because he was not
literate in his native language which made comprehending English
nearly impossible. Right then and there, Mary Jane knew she made
the right decision to come to LVGH. She realized that her impact on
her students’ lives would be much greater than she ever realized.
Mary Jane has seen many students from around the world in her
classroom. She has helped many people reach their goals and enjoys
talking with her students to get to know them and to learn about
their lives and culture. “When I hear about my students moving on
to the next class level or becoming citizens, I feel a sense of pride
that I was able to contribute to their success. I am also very grateful
to LVGH as they have given me the opportunity to open my eyes to
the world and see things very differently than if I had never become
a tutor.”

LVGH is especially grateful to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, for all their support, helping us grow stronger this year.
• With guidance from HFPG, LVGH established the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford Endowment Fund at the Foundation ensuring our future for many years to come.
• LVGH was awarded $165,000 over three years for our Digital Literacy Program. This program teaches students the skills they need to function in this age of technology.
• LVGH was awarded $180,000 over three years for our new Career Pathways program. For a long time, we have wanted to provide students with the support and training they need to move toward sustainable employment. HFPG saw that need and awarded LVGH the funds to make it happen.
• LVGH staff and Board have learned to be more effective fundraisers, stewards, governors and ambassadors through educational and consulting programs offered by the HFPG through its NonProfit Support Program.
