Andy Sythe’s tenure as head coach at Long Beach State has been characterized by individual and team success as well as scholar-athlete achievement in both track & field and cross country.

A five-time Big West Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year (2006, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014), Sythe has been at the helm of the cross country and indoor/outdoor track & field teams at LBSU for 25 seasons. He has developed a combined program that is among the best in the Big West Conference as well as at the regional and national level.

In 2012, the 49er track & field team posted 28 All-Big West performances, with five individual conference titles. Long Beach State also had a Big West-leading 17 entries in the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Two athletes, Katrina Graves-Johnson (high jump) and Ben Woodruff (javelin) qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where they both earned honorable mention All-America distinction. Graves-Johnson and Matt Maldonado (mile) were also second-team All-Americans during the indoor season. In addition, Woodruff was tabbed the Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Year, while Jahmani Lockett was named the Co-Big West Men’s Freshman of the Year.

In 2011, the men won their third Big West track & field title. Seventeen 49ers produced 23 all-conference perfor-mances, including seven individual championships. Three athletes also advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Champi-onships where they earned All-America honors. Randi Hicks was a first-team performer in the women’s javelin, while Colin Dunbar garnered second-team honors in the hammer and honorable mention in the discus. Nicholas Armstrong was also an honorable mention All-American in the decathlon. In addition to earning All-America status, Dunbar was selected as the 2011 USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year and the 2011 Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.

In 2010, the men had a runner-up finish at the Big West Championships, while Kenneth Medwood (400 Hurdles) and Randi Hicks (Javelin) won the individual conference title in their respective events. Seventeen 49ers also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary meet, with three athletes advancing to the national championships. Hicks highlighed the group, earning All-America honors in the javelin.

The men’s squad won their second Big West title in 2008, compiling 185 total points. The 49ers had 21 individu-als qualify for the NCAA Regionals, while six of those advanced to the national championship meet where Sythe saw two of his athletes, Brent Gray and Chris Richardson, earn All-America honors for the second time in their careers.

The men’s team also took first at the Big West Championships in 2006, while placing 16th at the NCAA Champi-onships, their highest team finish since 1998 when the Sythe-led team was 17th overall.

Since the inception of NCAA track & field regional qualifying in 2003, Long Beach State has sent 186 qualifiers to the postseason meet. In 2005 and 2006, Sythe sent more qualifiers to the NCAA Regionals than any other men’s program in the Big West Conference.

Sythe has also directed the cross country squad to a number of top performances as his athletes have produced 23 all-conference awards and five All-Region honors. In 2011, Rosa Del Toro was tabbed the Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year, a first for the Long Beach State program. Del Toro was also the first 49er on the women’s side to win the league’s individual title.

“The mission of our program is to challenge for and ultimately win conference championships and we are equally driven to continue our improvement at the national and regional level in both cross country and track and field,” said Sythe. “I believe that shifting more resources to the distance program has helped us achieve that goal.”

Since Sythe’s arrival, the 49ers have rewritten the record books. Currently, 80 indoor and 41 outdoor school records have been established by Sythe-coached athletes.

Strong academic performance has also been a common theme in Sythe’s career as a coach and athlete. Sythe was an outstanding student-athlete at San Diego State where he graduated in 1987 with honors and a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

As a coach, Sythe’s student-athletes have achieved perfect 4.0 semester grade-point averages 139 times. Through his guidance, 335 athletes have also been named to the academic all-conference team. On the national level, his athletes have produced 30 All-Academic teams in cross country and track & field. Individually, Sythe has helped his student-athletes attain the highest level of academic achievement with seven CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, two Phi Beta Kappas and one Rhodes Scholar.

Sythe was hired in the fall of 1989 as the head coach at Long Beach State. At age 23, he was the youngest NCAA Division I coach in the United States. He has had the very best mentors in the sport throughout his high school and college career. As an athlete under Dixon Farmer at San Diego State (1984-87), Sythe captained his team that ranked among the top 10 in the nation.

As an assistant for Ralph Lindeman at Long Beach State (1988-89), Sythe furthered his skills under the tutelage of another of the nations most respected coaches. In 1989, his mentor Lindeman was tabbed the Big West Coach of the Year. Both Farmer and Lindeman since have served on Olympic staffs for the United States.

Track & field and cross country are a passion for Sythe, and his dedication to the sport is reflected by his in-volvement beyond the scope of the University. Sythe has served on national committees with USA Track & Field and the U.S. Track Coaches Association. He has served on the Executive Committee for Men’s Development with USATF, been co-meet director for the 1999 USATF Senior Cross Country National Championships, and completed over 10 years of service as Men’s Track & Field Chair and board member for the Southern California Association of USA Track & Field. Sythe also completed four years of service with the Executive Committee and Rules Com-mittee for the USTFCCCA.

Sythe has coached at clinics throughout the U.S. and worked with the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Ange-les in its coaching instructional program. Recognized for his success and his dedicated work on the national level, Sythe was selected by his peers to be the head coach for the men’s West team at the 1995 United States Olympic Festival, held in Colorado Springs, Colo. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach for the champion West team at the 1993 Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas.

A native of Los Gatos, Calif., Sythe and his wife, Maribeth, reside in Long Beach with their two daughters, Sierra and Callie June.

>>>49er coaching/SUPPORT staff

Long Beach State track & field head coach Andy Sythe has announced the addition of a new member to his staff with the hiring of Tom Walsh as the cross country and distance coach.

“I am excited to introduce Tom Walsh as our Cross Country and Distance coach at Long Beach State,” Sythe said. “He will be a great leader for our distance runners and a great fit for our coaching staff. Tom has had proven success as the head cross country and middle and long distance coach at USC, leading some of the nation’s top runners in both cross country and track.”

Walsh spent 19 years as the head cross country and assistant track & field coach at USC. During his time with the Trojans, he coached 23 individual All-Americans in a number of events, including the 800m, 1500m and steeplechase, as well as in cross country. He also mentored one NCAA champion in the 800m (Brigita Langerholc, 2001) and two Olympic finalists.

In addition, Walsh saw his student-athletes set school records in every women’s distance event, from the 800m through the 10000m. He also developed many of the nation’s top NCAA male middle distance runners despite not having a men’s cross country squad.

“Tom’s achievements and experience make him the best fit for this position,” Sythe said. “We did an extensive search and what stood out with Tom is the incredible success he has achieved and the stability he brings to a program. He also knows the state of California, its coaches and recruiting base very well, and is an accomplished international recruiter. We will benefit from Tom’s expertise, and by combining the momentum our program is building with his proven abilities, we can further position ourselves for more national-level individual and team performances.”

Walsh is a coach known for showing great care and respect for his student-athletes. One aspect has been his efforts to promote a successful academic environment. In his 19 years at USC, Walsh’s cross country team held the top grade-point average of all the school’s athletic programs a total of seven times. His athletes were also frequently recognized by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for individual academic achievement.

Walsh was directly involved in the operations of all home meets at USC and has additional experience in public relations, sports media and sponsorship acquisitions for nationally televised events. These attributes will directly benefit the continued growth of the annual Beach Invitational and promotion of the new track facility scheduled for completion in the spring of 2015.

Walsh graduated from USC with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1987.

ATHLETIC DIRECTORVIC CEGLES

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION

In eight seasons as the Director of Athle cs, Vic Cegles has ushered Long Beach State into another golden era of success, while streamlining the department’s opera on and development.

Cegles, who was hired as the school’s 12th Director of Athle cs in April 2006, has made an impact in the athle c department’s ability to fundraise which is key to his goal of making Long Beach State not only the premiere school in the Big West Conference, but a player on the na onal stage when it comes to both athle cs and academics.

Since coming to Long Beach State, Cegles has placed strong emphasis on resource acquisi on targe ng the annual fund, capital improvements, scholarship endowments, cket sales and corporate sponsorships. He established what is now known as the Beach Athle c Club in 2006 and focused on centralizing annual giving. The reorganiza on has enabled teams to con nue sport-specifi c solicita ons and provide consistent recogni on and benefi ts to donors.

The annual fund has increased in each year of Cegles’ tenure, and in 2014 reached over $2 million dollars in total gi s towards Athle cs.

Cegles con nues to focus on facility enhancements and a $25 million capital campaign for athle cs. Within the last year, Long Beach State replaced the original fl oor of the Walter Pyramid, upda ng the notable new main court design while also keeping the mul ple-court ac vity area on an all-new, maple fi nish. Addi onally, work has begun on replacing the Jack Rose Track, a major project to li the aging facility to elite compe on standards.

Other major projects that have been fi nished under Cegles include a $2 million expansion and renova on of the Walter Pyramid locker rooms, providing state of the art homes for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball and a strength and condi oning center within the Walter Pyramid overlooking the fl oor. Addi onally, new scoreboards have been installed for baseball, so ball, soccer, tennis, and most recently, water polo, along with the installa on of lights at George Allen Field.

Under Cegles’ leadership, the university entered a long-term 55-year lease with the City of Long Beach to operate the iconic Blair Field, ensuring an improved home for Dirtbag baseball. With that commitment, a $17 million campaign for improvements at Blair Field is underway, which includes a new prac ce infi eld, safer walls and remodeled ba ng cages, locker rooms, offi ces and suites at the iconic stadium. Four- me MLB All-Star Troy Tulowitzki pledged $1 million to the project, off ered at his LBSU Hall of Fame induc on this past year.

Cegles and Beach Athle cs have also contracted with Learfi eld Sports Marke ng, outsourcing all media and sponsorship rights with the na onal collegiate sales company. Learfi eld spearheads a commitment to increasing corporate sponsorships and sales of season and individual game ckets for baseball and basketball. Overall cket revenues increased 15 percent in 2013-14, and Men’s Basketball in par cular has seen a massive rise in a endance, second in the Big West behind Hawai’i and featuring a prominent student sec on that has grown 118 percent since Cegles hired Dan Monson to coach the team.

Long Beach State has excelled both on the playing fi elds and in the classroom under Cegles’ leadership. For the eighth consecu ve year all NCAA sponsored teams at Long Beach State scored above the required 925 on the Academic Progress Rate (APR), the only California State University to do so under the four-year standard, and 83 student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-Conference honorees a er mee ng compe on and academic standards, most o en a 3.2 cumula ve GPA.

Diversity in the coaching and administra ve staff is a fundamental goal and the athle cs department was recognized under Cegles’ leadership in 2008 as a na onal NCAA diversity winner.

Compe vely, in his eight seasons at the helm of the Long Beach State athle c department, the 49ers have won 31 conference championships, with 31 LBSU teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Long Beach State has become the gold standard of the Big West Conference, winning four straight Commissioner’s Cups, awarded annually to the most successful athle c department as a whole. The 49ers have won fi ve of the last six cups, and set a compe on points record in 2011-12.

The Beach captured three Big West Championships last season, in Women’s Tennis, Men’s Track & Field, and So ball, and along with the Tennis and So ball programs, the Dirtbags’ baseball program made its return to the NCAA postseason in 2013-14. Women’s Tennis has now won either the regular-season or tournament tle in 11 straight seasons, and Men’s Track and Field has captured the Big West Championship in three of the last four seasons.

In 2012-13, the Sand Volleyball program, established under Cegles’ tenure, captured Long Beach State’s seventh Na onal Championship with a victory over Pepperdine, as LBSU became the fi rst program to hold a na onal championship in both indoor and outdoor volleyball. The Men’s Basketball program once again captured the Big West regular season championship under Dan Monson, winning three-straight tles for the fi rst me since the 1975-1977 seasons.

Cegles has reorganized and refocused the en re administra ve staff , and also nego ated new contract extensions for men’s basketball coach Dan Monson and women’s volleyball coach Brian Gimmillaro. During his tenure, Cegles has also hired nine new head coaches in so ball, water polo, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball.

From 2003-06 Cegles was the associate athle cs director at Temple University where he directed athle cs fundraising, marke ng and promo ons, sponsorship and cket sales while planning an athle cs capital campaign with university development.

Previously, he was vice president of business development for Gaylord Sports Management in Sco sdale, Ariz., a er serving 16 years at Arizona State University in athle c development and external aff airs. He ul mately served as the lead senior associate athle c director for external aff airs in his fi nal two years at ASU.

While at Arizona State he led the athle cs department’s $25 million capital campaign to enhance facili es and endowments and, among other responsibili es, supervised baseball, men’s and women’s golf and women’s gymnas cs. He also was the assistant athle c director for development at Rutgers University for fi ve years.

Cegles served as assistant basketball coach at Carnegie Mellon University and as an assistant basketball and baseball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He holds a degree in business administra on from Bucknell and a master’s in counseling and student personnel services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Cegles and his wife, Bonnie, have two sons. Vic, a former baseball standout at Rutgers, is the Director of External Rela ons for Athle cs at Minnesota and Casey, a former wide receiver at Towson University, is Director of the Annual Fund for Old Dominion Athle cs.

ABOUT WALTER PYRAMIDThe home of Long Beach State basketball and volleyball for over 15 years, the Walter Pyramid has become a na onally recognized icon for the university and the city of Long Beach. Because of its drama c appearance, its unique mul -purpose capability and its lure for television produc on, the Walter Pyramid is one of the fi nest collegiate athle c facili es in the western United States.

On March 5, 2005, the Pyramid was offi cially named the Walter Pyramid, thanks to the generous dona ons presented to the university by Dr. Mike and Arlene Walter. Long- me supporters of the school, the Walters’ gi to athle cs and academics was the largest single gi in LBSU Athle cs history.

Offi cially opened on November 30, 1994, the Beach rolled to a 71-64 win over the University of Detroit before a crowd of 5,021 and an ESPN television audience.

The structure’s dis nc ve cobalt blue exterior has permanently altered the city’s skyline. It rises 18 stories above north campus and can be seen for miles in all direc ons. It has provided a quantum leap in both the image and eff ec veness of the Long Beach State Athle cs programs, with an immediate impact on LBSU’s fan base, scholarship fundraising, recrui ng and revenue genera on. Nearly 200,000 visitors pass through the Walter Pyramid’s entrances annually.

Designed by Long Beach architect Don Gibbs and built by the Nielson Construc on Company of San Diego, the Walter Pyramid cost approximately $22 million. The ‘Myd (as it is aff ec onately referred to by loyal fans) measures 345 feet on each side of its perfectly square base. Its fl oor space accommodates nine volleyball courts or three full basketball courts and four addi onal half basketball courts on the “ac vity” level.

One of three true pyramids in the United States (others are located in Las Vegas and Memphis), the Walter Pyramid’s most unique feature is its can levered sea ng system, mounted on moveable pla orms. When use of the fl oor level is required for physical educa on classes, each 81-ton sea ng pla orm can be raised hydraulically to expose over 39,000 square feet of fl ooring.

In the summer of 2014, the original beechwood fl ooring in the Walter Pyramid was replaced with maple fl ooring. The main court underwent a redesign with the new fl oor being laid down (rendering seen to the le ).
