2014 IMPACT REPORT

In 2014 with your help we made an impact! We were able to give Greenville Technical College money for equipment, technology, supplies and other needs. These gifts helped keep our college’s programs up-to-date and ensured that our students received relevant training to give them the opportunity for good jobs with good incomes. We also funded 350 scholarships providing access to an education that for many of the recipients will change their lives.

We have received a number of letters from students receiving financial aid, and their words speak eloquently about the impact of your support:

“I am a cancer survivor. In 2014 I was accepted into the Radiologic Technology program that will enable me to work with patients who have also been diagnosed with cancer. My life’s journey has now given me more purpose than before.”

“I enrolled at Greenville Technical college after I suddenly found myself a single mother who had to enter the “paying” workforce. Thanks to your support I am only 3 classes shy of graduating.”

“I am currently employed full time, taking classes at night and online to complete my degree in computer networking. I am truly grateful for you.”

“Thank you for helping me in completing my Greenville Tech education, so that I can transfer to Clemson for a degree in Computer Engineering.”

“I am very grateful that you believe in students and their role in the future of technology. Through proper training and assistance from foundations such as yours, many students will undoubtedly have a hand in the future success of our country and the technology-driven society we now live in.”

Our students cover a broad spectrum. We have students who graduated at the top of their high school class who have chosen to do the first two years of their college here before transferring to Clemson, USC-Upstate, Furman, USC, or other four year colleges. We have students who dropped out of high school but got their GED and are now pursuing a two-year Associates degree. We have students who are returning to the classroom after years of being away. We have students who are taking classes to improve job skills, students who are taking classes to be able to change jobs, and unemployed individuals who are here to gain skills to obtain employment once again.

With your help we can continue to assist the College in achieving its mission of providing access to a higher education for everyone who desires it. We thank you for helping us give the Upstate citizens a lifetime of opportunities for success through education. Your generosity continues to impact the Upstate’s economic development by helping us fund much-needed workforce training.

We thank you for all that you have done and solicit your continuing support.

Sincerely, Robert E. Howard, President Greenville Tech Foundation

Timothy J. Reed Chairman Greenville Tech Foundation Board of Directors

From Sitting in a Classroom To Leading One

Of all the teachers who’ve impacted his path, Nehemiah Chandler points to a middle school teacher who changed the way an eighth grader looked at education. At Greenville Technical College, the Southside High School Graduate is involved in the Call Me Mister program so that he can become the one other students remember as being the best.

The mission of the Call Me MISTER initiative is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background particularly among the state’s lowest performing elementary schools. Student participants are largely selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities.

When Chandler finishes his general education courses through the University Transfer program, he’ll move on to Coastal Carolina for a bachelor’s degree in education and from there, to his dream job at the front of a high school classroom.

Advanced Manufacturing

Diane Page is reinventing her career in advanced manufacturing. Page went to work for Steel Heddle when she was just 18. Though the work was hard and the environment was dirty, she enjoyed the job and rose through the ranks to become a lead set-up operator and supervisor. After 39 years with the company, her world shifted in 2012 when it was announced that the company would be sold.

Thanks to the Trade-Adjustment Act, Page had the opportunity to attend Greenville Technical College. Though she could have chosen any field, she wanted to remain in manufacturing and seeing the opportunities for machinists, she entered the Machine Tool Technology program.

Much has changed in manufacturing since Page first went to work. Jobs require a higher skill level and on–the –job experience must be backed up with a credential. The environment is also very different. The shop floor is clean, and though the work is still challenging, it demands more brain power than anything else. With her new degree, Page has changed along with manufacturing, and now she looks forward to becoming part pf the future in this promising field.

Veteran Quickly Makes His Mark on Campus

After six years in the Air Force, Bo Robertson tried a few colleges before he found Greenville Technical College in 2013. Ever since, organizations on campus have benefitted from his leadership skills. He is head of the Habitat Club and Student Veterans, a Student Ambassador, and communications officer for student government. All the while, he is earning excellent grades in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration program.

Robertson’s next step is Furman University, where he plans to continue leading while learning as he earns a bachelor’s degree in Military Science. Eventually, he hopes to manage a business with the same degree of success he’s found on campus. Thanks to hard work and determination, Robertson has made a smooth transition from serving our country to serving as a role model.

STEM Graduate Takes Significant Steps Toward A Promising Future

When Kianna Moss walked across the stage at the Bon Secours Wellness Center to receive an associate degree from Greenville Technical College, She became first in her family to wear a college cap and gown. Now she plans to make a habit of it, with goals that include earning a Ph.D. in the biotechnology field.

Moss didn’t choose a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) field just for the salaries and oppor-tunities. She has always been drawn to science with the results of assessments taken throughout school showing a strong interest in careers such as forensics, detective work, or some science related field.

At GTC, Moss found confidence in the strong support of Dr. Kathy Romero, one of her biotechnology professors. She was fortunate to receive scholarship assistance from Duke Energy through Clemson University’s Center for Workforce Development, and she presented her research on “Anticancer Effects of Blueberry and Pomegranate Extracts on the AGS Gastric Adenocarcinoma Cell Line” at the 10th annual SC Upstate Research Symposium hosted by USC Upstate. The Symposium provides a forum for faculty, students, and community representatives to interact, share information and expertise, and nurture future research.

STEM skills are in demand, and there aren’t enough women or minorities represented in those fields. Moss is proud to break new ground for women, for minorities, for her family, and for herself as she completes one STEM degree and moves on to the next step on her educational path.

The Greer Campus of Greenville Technical College became the Benson Campus in August, Honoring Jim and Evelyn Benson and their $3 million gift to the college.

The Benson gift of $2 million is the largest cash gift ever received by the Greenville Tech Foundation. They have also pledged an additional $1 million to be paid over five years. In recognition of both gift, the campus has been renamed and Building 301 will soon bear the names of Evelyn and Jim Benson. The money will be used to improve the campus and to expand facilities in order to better serve the students of Greer, Taylors, and surrounding areas for many years to come.

Jim Benson has deep roots in Greer, and his gift is an investment in the community he loves. “I got my start in Greer, selling used cars I trucked in from Pennsylvania and later operating a used car lot on Poinsett Street.” Said Benson, who today is president of an automotive group that includes seven dealerships in Greer, Easley, and Spartanburg. “People in the community were very supportive of my business from the start, and I owe a debt of gratitude to them. This is my way of giving back to Greer.”

Jim Benson Gives Back to the People of Greer.

2014 Board of Directors

At Greenville Technical College, we work hard to increase access for potential students who need a relevant education to qualify for a good job or a better one. Once those students are here, we place a strong emphasis on student success, providing programs and resources that support their efforts to improve their futures.

Donors help us immeasurably with both access and success. Scholarships allow students who couldn’t otherwise find a way to pursue a college degree to take steps toward realizing an educational dream. Donations that support classroom equipment and resource needs support our students and ensure that they receive the highest quality education.

Donations are ensuring that the education we provide meets employer needs now and in the years ahead. Our Center for Manufacturing Innovation, expected to open in 2016 in partnership with Clemson University, is aimed at increasing the number of skilled workers for manufacturing in order to close the skills gap. We’ve received strong support from the manufacturing community in this effort, and donations by Hubbell Lighting, Duke Energy Foundation, Piedmont Natural Gas, ScanSource, and Bosch Rexroth are ensuring that we can deliver an innovative answer to the skills gap challenge.

Nearly half of all college students in this country study at a community college. One of the reasons that two-year colleges capture such a strong share is that the education we offer takes graduates directly into the job market or on to a four-year college or university. With either path, these students are well prepared for what lies ahead. Clearly, Greenville Technical College is real college for real opportunities. But without the generosity of our donors, we wouldn’t be able to provide an education that employers and transfer destinations welcome. Thank you for all you do to support our mission of driving personal and economic growth through learning. Together, we are ensuring that South Carolina’s economy can continue to grow.
