Most of all, we are students who already know where we want to go and are willing to make sacrifices to get there. We have a passion – such as radio, hair styling, cars, design, welding – and the focus and drive to turn that passion into a career. We learn with purpose and through practice. We imagine, create, and trouble-shoot. We are the builders, the artists, the caregivers, the engineers, the protectors.

We are the thinkers and doers in the real prep school for the real world.

We are EVIT.

What is EVIT?

The East Valley Institute of Technology is a public career and technical school offering more than 30 occupational training programs – such as 3D Animation, Cosmetology, Aviation, and much more -- tuition-free for high school students and tuition-based for adults.

But more than anything else, EVIT is the people who breathe life into it every day.

We are teachers who left careers in our respective industries to take our knowledge to the classroom. We are professional staff who support teaching and learning. We are business partners who ensure that students are learning the skills to create a strong workforce. We are parents who see the difference it makes when our children attend a school where they want to be. We are alumni who are living our dream because we attended EVIT.

the real prep school

Welcome to the East Valley Institute of Technology!

We love our school and we think you will too. Students, you won’t find another school like this anywhere in the United States. EVIT is where we help you find your passion – and turn that passion into a paycheck. As TIME Magazine says, EVIT is where you’ll find “learning that works.”

I often tell people that EVIT is the zebra in the education horse race. Students from high schools across the East Valley – and adults too – come here to be trained in a particular area of interest, such as radio broadcasting or fashion design. For two to four hours a day, you learn alongside classmates who share your interests. And you learn skills that can make you immediately employable after graduating from high school.

Parents, EVIT is also a practical pathway to college. In fact, 2 out of 3 EVIT students go on to college, with many of them earning college credit here through dual enrollment. Programs such as medical assistant or

dental assistant prepare our students to work in the health field while going to college to become doctors or nurses or dentists or veterinarians. With the cost of a college education going up every day, the job training EVIT provides is the smart path to a job to help pay that tuition bill.

Students, we encourage you to take a chance. Don’t settle for the traditional. Step outside the box where everyone else is. Step up – and make EVIT your path to success.

We invite you to visit our campus, meet our teachers, staff and students, and learn why EVIT is the real prep school for college, careers and life.

Building 1 is the heart of the Main Campus. Step inside and you’ll

immediately feel the energetic beat of The Pulse, EVIT’s Dance Top 40 student-operated radio station. In state-of-the-art studios, Radio/Audio Production students learn live sound and audio production, on-air performance, and much more. Text THEPULSE to 90210.

The Video Productions program is home to one of the largest training studios in Arizona and the place where students learn all aspects of visual media production. Multimedia students learn typography, design, illustration, photography and more as they design materials and websites. Text EVITMEDIA to 90210.

Visit 3D Animation to see students learning storyboarding, animation, and video game design. Text EVITGAMING to 90210.

Check out the Engineering Science program to see students engaged in the inner workings of electronics and robotics. Text EVITROBOT to 90210.

And, what would a technology school be without a Computer Service Technician and Networking program? Text EVITGEEK to 90210.

Creativity reigns at the east end of Building 1, where the Fashion, Interiors and Textiles program is located. The rooms that focus on interior design have been painted and designed by the students themselves. And the fashion side features mannequins, sewing machines and truly gifted artists whose design collections are judged each year by fashion experts, such as the editors of Marie Claire. Text EVITSTYLE to 90210.

Culinary Arts and Commercial Baking in Building 2 is one of the most visited

places on the EVIT Main Campus. Students gain experience by serving at special functions in the banquet hall. But the real action takes place in the “back of the house,” where the students explore their passion for cooking and baking with the guidance of professional chefs. Text EVITCHEF to 90210.

The brick barn-shaped building attached to Building 3 actually was a functioning

barn years ago when the University of Arizona research farm was housed at 1601 W. Main Street in Mesa. Today, it is where EVIT’s elected Governing Board meets the second Monday of every month. This building also is where students pay fees and where visitors can find EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey.

The playground equipment outside Building 4 tips off visitors to what they’ll

find inside: Early Childhood Education students working with children at Bridges Preschool and Head Start, which provide lab experiences where EVIT students learn classroom management, discipline techniques and how to interact with young children. Text EVITTEACH to 90210.

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning students are training for two of the most in-demand occupations today: the machinist and the HVAC technician. Construction students learn a range of skills, from electrical wiring and plumbing to roofing, blueprint reading and more, while Welding students learn basic metal fabrication and entry level welding techniques in a program that has paid internships and an excellent record of placing students in jobs. Text EVITBUILDIT to 90210.

If you’re in to cars, you have to check out EVIT’s Automotive,

Diesel and Collision Repair programs in Buildings 9 and 10. Featuring the latest auto repair and maintenance technology, these programs are taught by nationally-certified instructors. Students practice skills on industry-provided late-model automobiles and participate in internships and job shadowing. Text EVITAUTO to 90210.

No visit to EVIT’s Main Campus is complete without a stop at Building

11 – home to the Fire Science and Law Enforcement programs, an auto bay with donated fire trucks, the purple EVIT police car, a training tower, and ropes course. Both programs stress physical training and a militaristic style, which means you may see students rappelling down the tower, running in formation around campus, or even playing a game of basketball. Text EVITHERO to 90210.

Cosmetology, located in Building 12 on the Main Campus’ east side, is EVIT’s

single largest program and one of the school’s most popular services offered to the public. It’s also tuition- free for high school students; the same training can cost $25,000 and higher at private beauty schools. Students also have the option of studying Aesthetics, a specialty where they learn techniques for skin analysis, facials, and more. Text EVITCOSMO to 90210.

Do you like helping others? Enjoy science? You’ll experience

both at the EVIT Health Sciences Center in Buildings 14 and 15 where you can train for a range of health occupations. And, the Human Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Careers class is not only fun – but also counts as a science credit at East Valley district high schools. The center includes an ambulance bay and an operating room. Located next-door, partner Adelante Healthcare offers students the opportunity to gain clinical experience as well. EVIT’s health programs include: Dental Assistant; Emergency Medical Technician; Human Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Careers; Massage Therapy; Medical Assistant; Nursing Assistant; Pharmacy Technician; Physical Therapy Technician; Veterinary Assistant (East Campus); Practical Nursing (Adult Education); and Surgical Technologist (Adult Education). EVIT isn’t just for high school students. Adults, too, can take EVIT

classes and train for careers in health care and nursing, industrial commercial technology, human services and collision repair. Learn more at the Adult Education Center in Building 16 on the west edge of the EVIT Main Campus. Text EVIT to 90210.

In Building 17 just south of EVIT’s Adult Education Center, you’ll find one of the

most interesting places on the Main Campus. Inside, engineer and scientist Bryan Beaulieu is working on a model for an educational tourist attraction to be constructed south of Phoenix on Indian land: a 42-story globe of the Earth. EVIT students have designed and constructed materials to be used in The Great Globe Project that will be built by children from all over the world. The model features a train, lights, and even a soundtrack. It’s a project that not only engages youth in science, technology, engineering and math – but also in geography, global diversity and cultural understanding. Visit www.thegreatglobe.com.

The influence of business and industry can be seen everywhere at EVIT.

Construction students don hard hats and protective goggles even when they’re in the classroom, as re-quested by business advisors who want them to learn what is expected on the job. Fire science students work alongside professional firefighters as both take part in vehicle extrication drills. Law enforcement students undergo rigorous physical training and learn the honor, courage and commitment emphasized by their chosen profession.

Those are just a few examples of how EVIT works with business to develop a workforce that meets the latest industry needs.

EVIT has a nearly 85 percent success rate in placing graduates in jobs, college or the military. That wouldn’t be possible without the input of about 300 industry partners and advisors who help develop each program’s curriculum, donate equipment, and provide internships and apprenticeships.

“EVIT’s purpose and mission is to provide a ready workforce for industry and to make sure that the train-ing we provide enables our students to get placed and get jobs,” said Janice Parker, director of business partnerships. “You have to have an ear to the industry to find out what they need.”

Specific trade skills are not the only thing local business and industry look for in an EVIT-trained worker. They also expect EVIT students to develop verbal and written skills, a solid work ethic, and customer service and phone skills.

Abraham Garcia, a construction student from Mesa’s Westwood High School, doesn’t mind learning the so-called soft skills. He believes the guidance of business and industry is making “a big difference” in his education. “You can be more prepared for a job one day,” he said. “It will help you in the future.”

Are you a girl who enjoys tinkering with engines or wants to fight fires? Are you a guy who loves to cut hair or work with little kids? EVIT offers many non-traditional opportunities for students who want to blaze a trail where most of their gender rarely ventures. These “non-trad” students are encouraged and celebrated at EVIT for their desire to break down societal barriers.

EVIT alumna Samantha Reaves of Fountain Hills completed the Diesel program in spring 2013. “You can be girIy. I like getting all girly-ed up,” Reaves said. “But you have to be OK with getting dirty too. In diesel, someday I’ll be making twice as much money as other women … And I’ll know I can take care of myself.”

Female students are considered non-trads in Automotive, Collision Repair, Construction, Culinary Arts, 3D Animation, Fire Science, HVAC, Law Enforcement, Multimedia, Precision Manufacturing, Radio/Audio Production, Engineering Science and Technology, Video Productions, and Welding programs. Male students are non-trads in Early Childhood Education, Cosmetology, Massage Therapy, and Fashion, Interiors and Design programs. Males are also considered non-trads in all health programs.

Non-traditional career paths can be quite rewarding, especially in industries traditionally dominated by the opposite sex. Before she even completed EVIT’s Diesel program, Reaves was being sought after by employers.

And, non-trads often find that they bring something to the job that others in that field lack. Steven Taylor of Mesa completed the EVIT Cosmetology program in spring 2013. He discovered along the way that male cosmetologists often excel at the customer service aspect of their profession. “When girls come in and then leave unhappy, it’s usually, in my opinion, when a girl cuts their hair and they go by what (the stylist) would like. But the guy will do what (the customer) wants,” Taylor said.

Taylor enjoys the artistry and creativity involved in cutting, styling and coloring hair. “The things you can do are just so amazing,” he said. And he isn’t going to let a gender barrier stop him.

“I’m not the kind of person who’s going to let someone tell me I can’t do this,” he said.Likewise, alumna Kelly Condon of Chandler wasn’t going to let anyone tell her that she couldn’t handle EVIT’s rigorous Law Enforcement program.

“I don’t think (girls) think they can do it. They don’t think they’re strong enough,” Condon said. “But they can do it -- and they can think on their feet.”

The Law Enforcement program teaches girls they can be leaders, said Condon, who used her EVIT education as a spring-board into the Navy. Her experience as a non-trad in law enforcement reinforced her confidence and taught her the importance of teamwork.Meanwhile, the Diesel program helped Reaves to be more mature and independent – in all aspects of her life.

“Even with the boyfriend situation, I’m with someone because I want to be with someone – not because I need to be with someone,” she said. “I know I can be on my own.”

For more information about non-traditional programs and career pathways, visit www.evit.com/admissions/Non-Traditional.cfm or contact EVIT counselor Pauline Acosta at [email protected] or (480) 461-4156.

In August 2011, the East Valley Institute of Technology expanded to open the East Campus at 6625 S. Power Road in Mesa. Located next-door to ASU Polytechnic, EVIT East offers Cosmetology, Law Enforcement and several health programs.

In addition, two popular EVIT programs – Aviation and Veterinary Assistant -- are exclusive to the East Campus, and starting in August 2014, EVIT East will begin offering a pre-engineering program for select students in partnership with Intel and ASU Polytechnic.

The 10-acre campus has grown to more than 700 students, but still retains a small-school feel with the entire staff pitching in to help with fundraisers, events and other day-to-day activities. And just about everyone knows Harley, the guinea pig in the vet class who also likes to hang out in the computer lab. Text EVIT to 90210.

If you’re low on energy, tune in to 90.7 FM or 92.7 FM to hear the hyper Dance Top 40 teen-focused music and commentary of The Pulse, EVIT’s radio station.

“We’re commercial-free energy,” said Radio/Audio instructor Steve Grosz.EVIT Radio/Audio students run The Pulse as on-air personalities and producers. They also operate TeenPulseRadio.com, an Internet-streamed radio station featuring music (EDM, Dubstep, Techno, Top 40, Remixes and more), videos, and gossip/news by teens for teens.

“No other radio station really focuses on teens. They don’t feel they can make enough money off of them,” Grosz said. “At EVIT, teens are our number one target.”

The Pulse and TeenPulseRadio.com form the heart of EVIT’s Radio/Audio Production program, where students gain experience in day-to-day operations of the music business, including audio production, radio advertising, promotions, image branding, and news writing. They work in digital audio workstations that are standard in recording studios and may

have the opportunity to broadcast a show and participate in live radio remotes.

“We are a family here,” said Mary Phillips, a senior from Arcadia High School in the Scottsdale Unified School District. “All the hard work we do here makes you a family.”

It also results in EVIT’s Radio/Audio Production program having an 88 percent success rate in placing students in jobs, college or the military. The students often volunteer on their own time to go out and do radio remotes because their teacher inspires them to do more.

“Steve (Grosz) does so much for us,” Phillips said, “we have to give back.” Check out The Pulse for yourself by visiting the radio station on the second floor of Building 1. For more information, call (480) 461-4049. Text ThePulse to 90210.

Campus life at EVIT is rich with opportunities for students to grow, give back to their com-munity, and form friendships with peers from over 70 schools across the East Valley. Though they are only here for two to four hours each day, most EVIT students will tell you there is no-where else they’d rather be because they’re working in subject areas that they are passionate about – and alongside classmates who share that passion.

Every morning and again shortly before noon, the buses pull up and hundreds of students pour onto the campus, most of them wearing the uniforms of their chosen profession: scrubs for health occupations, smocks for cosmetology and aesthetics, and the appropriate apparel and gear for industrial and public safety careers – welding, machining, construction, automotive, fire and law enforcement. Before class, Main Campus students can grab a quick breakfast or lunch item from the food cart operated by the Culinary Arts program. They can also take a moment to scribble their goal for the day on the EVIT Inspiration Board, a giant outdoor chalkboard modeled after a similar board at ASU Polytechnic. And, student lounges on the Main and East campuses are great places to take a break and make new friends.

Throughout the year, there are many ways that EVIT students pull together to meet a goal, complete a project, or help their community. Students elected to EVIT’s Executive Club Coun-cil (ECC) raise money for causes like Mesa Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh’s annual toy drive for Cardon Children’s Medical Center. Radio students often spend time off campus helping with live remotes for The Pulse. Culinary Arts and Commercial Baking students give out pro-duce to families during Market on the Move events the second Saturday of each month. Early Childhood Education students adopt Head Start families for Christmas. Cosmetology stu-dents and Fashion, Interiors and Textiles students stage hair and fashion events to showcase their creative skills and raise money for Mesa United Way. And, students compete for the title of Mr. and Miss EVIT by seeing who can raise the most money for United Way.

EVIT students test their skills and vie for scholarships in state and national competitions sponsored by Future Educators of America (FEA); HOSA Future Health Professionals; Skills USA; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA); and Careers through Culinary Arts (CCAP). They host fundraisers throughout the school year to raise travel money and pay other expenses. And, HOSA organizes a walk event every year to raise money for a health-related cause. In 2013, the EVIT HOSA group raised more than $10,000 for cystic fibrosis – more than any other HOSA group in the nation.

Attendance is stressed at EVIT with a generous incentive provided by Thorobred Chevrolet. In the spring, students who have had perfect attendance get the chance to be in a drawing for a car donated by the dealership. The vehicle is restored by the Collision Repair and Auto-motive programs. Keys are drawn and the lucky student whose key starts the engine gets the car.

But the highlight of each school year really happens in May when students who have met their program’s requirements get to walk in the EVIT Completion Ceremony to receive their certificate. The students wear the caps and gowns from their home school, creating a rainbow of colors in the event that is held at an outdoor venue like Tempe Diablos Stadium. Thousands of proud parents and friends cheer as “Your Future Workforce” is introduced and the EVIT completers turn their tassles.
