In 1926, the history of the

turkey changed when turkey breeder Jesse Throssel moved from England to

Aldergrove, BC. With just one tom and two hens making up his original breeding stock, Throssel worked with his high meat producing turkeys and the USDA to

produce the Broad Breasted Bronze. This turkey breed grew in popularity through the 1940s and in the 1950s the BBB was

bred with the White Holland turkey to produce the Broad Breasted White. Because of its maximum size and breast

meat yield and ability to meet consumer demand, this specific turkey breed became the foundation

of the modern turkey industry in North America.

PLAYVisitors to Aldergrove can go wild here — with an enjoyable day at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Watch the feeding of the lions, meet a reptile or watch out for the Radical Raptors. Military Connections

the royal Canadian Navy’s primary communication station for the Maritime Forces Pacific fleet is located at Naval radio site Aldergrove. Nrs Aldergrove held the traditional naval

designation of HMCs Aldergrove from 1956–1967 and Canadian Forces station Aldergrove (or CFs Aldergrove)

from 1967–1996. Automation in the mid-1990s combined with downsizing led to the facility becoming an attachment of CFB

Esquimalt, rather than an independent Canadian Forces station.

Langley’s twilight drive-In movie theatre is the largest of only three remaining outdoor theatres in BC. there are only five countries left that list locations for these infamous theatres: Australia, Brazil, India, the us and Canada.

Billy Miner — Pie?

While a peaceful and friendly community today, Aldergrove was once home to Canada’s first and most famous train robber, Bill Miner (known by the Mounties and, much later, Hollywood, as the Grey Fox).

though a masterful and elusive ne’er-do-well, the Grey Fox was eventually brought to justice in 1906 by local resident brothers, duncan and robert shortreed. today, the shortreed Cairn marks the location of this pioneer family homestead.

PLAYBrookswood is a small community with lots to do. Langley Passive Park at 208th Street and 36th Avenue offers a disc golf course. George Preston Recreation Centre is home to the Langley Curling Club, and offers public skating during the winter months. If the weather is warmer, pack a picnic and bring the kids to the neighbourhood water park. Brookswood Pond is the perfect spot to take a walk and is popular with dogs and their owners.

EAtAfter some time enjoying the area’s amenities, you can always enjoy a meal or take a coffee break. Your choices range from pub fare to authentic international dishes. A local favourite is ruan thai where you can enjoy fresh and delicious Thai cuisine prepared by the husband and wife team that own the restaurant. Find them in the Brookswood Plaza.

The Langley Players Drama Club, located in Brookswood, has been entertaining locals and visitors alike for almost 45 years.

Seven horses and a colt are on public display through “Horsing Around Langley”, a public art project designed to foster community collaboration. It has brought together the agricultural, art and cultural communities, as well as the corporate community and the general public at large in a year-long venture that is aimed to use art to enhance the community’s agricultural heritage. Home to over 6,000 horses, it also acknowledges Langley as the Horse Capital of BC. Proceeds from the sponsorships, sale and auctioning of the horse and colt statues will be used by the Langley Arts Council to support future art and cultural activities, including grants and sponsorships to other art and cultural non-profit groups in Langley.

the first European settlers in what is today the City of Langley were William and Adam Innes, two brothers who came to British Columbia from near London, ontario with the intention of freighting to the Cariboo goldfields. the original settlement became known as “Innes Corners”, and was later called “Langley Prairie” when the post office was transferred there in 1911. Continued growth resulted in the demand for higher levels of service in the community and on March 15, 1955, the City of Langley, with its current boundaries, was incorporated as a separate municipality.

The original site of the Hudson’s Bay fort is actually located three kilometres downstream from its present site, at what was later called Old Fort Langley, and then Derby in 1858. The remnants of the first fort and signage explaining its history are now located in what is now Derby Reach Regional Park.


While it all began with the search for gold on the Fraser River, this all-season destination is a combination of turn-of-the-century architecture and rural landscapes. This is also the exact location where the Hudson’s Bay Company established their huge trade organization and the story is told inside both the National Historic site and the Langley Centennial Museum. The nearby world-renowned Trinity Western University attracts students from around the world who are interested in a classic liberal arts education.

The trail connects Fort Langley to the original site of the Hudson’s Bay trading post which was previously located downriver. 18 prawns 1/8 tsp grated ginger 1 tsp chopped shallot 1/8 tsp turmeric

For the sauce: brown the onion and garlic in one tbsp oil. Add curry paste and stir one minute. Add tomato, cream, coconut, sugar and bring to a boil. Blend the sauce and season.

For the prawns: heat oil in a pan, add prawns and cook on one side for two minutes, flip and add 2 cups of sauce. Cook for another two minutes. Plate and serve with fresh cilantro.

MeMoRial tReesIn the summer of 1914, a group known as the Langley Volunteers began preparing for what was later called the Great War. At the head of this organization was dr. Benjamin Marr, Municipal Collector Archie Payne, and local grocer Arthur Johnston. during their service in Europe, Marr and Payne decided that if they were lucky enough to return, they would do what they could to remember Langley’s fallen soldiers.

After the War, Marr and Payne returned to Langley and began their memorial projects. street names were changed to commemorate the soldier who had lived there, such as Glover road or Berry road.

to create a living memorial to the dead, it was decided in 1923 to plant a tree for each fallen soldier at their renamed street. originally the trees were surrounded by a white fence and featured a plaque stating who the road was named after. All of the original markers have disappeared and, although many of the trees have died, the remaining few stand as a reminder of how everyone in this small community was touched by the far-away war.

the Langley Heritage society placed house-shaped cement monuments at the remaining four trees as a memorial to both the First World War soldiers and the people who planted these trees in 1923. Plaques were placed on the monuments in a ceremony on december 20, 2003.

Historical Old Yale Road, one of the first roads to be paved in the province, runs through Murrayville and connects to the city’s first roundabout. The Langley Regional Airport is a general aviation airport used for aviation industry businesses and by private aircraft for recreational flying, as well as fixed wing and helicopter flying training and charter flights.

The airport is also home to the Canadian Museum of Flight, dedicated to restoring, preserving and showcasing Canada’s rich aviation heritage. It is a great spot to spend part of your day. Do not miss the famous Handley Page Hampden as it is the only one on display in the world! Murrayville is also home to the Langley Golf & Banquet Centre, a beautifully groomed par 3 course that appeals to all skill levels.

MurrAYVILLE

Amid the homes and shops, this area is the traditional civic core. Murrayville is home to the Langley Memorial Hospital, Langley rCMP Main detachment, Langley school district offices, W.C. Blair recreation Centre, and Langley regional Airport. Murrayville is one of the oldest communities in Langley and several historical landmarks are found here, including the community’s oldest schoolhouse and the 1930s P.Y. General store, today a modern café.

the Murrayville Pumphouse is important for its historic and social significance. the pump house site has supplied water to the residents of Murrayville, one way or another, continuously since 1911. Community folklore still claims that the water collected here makes the best pickles.

Langley’s first indoor public pool opened december 1986. Named in memory of the township’s late mayor W.C. Blair recreation Centre, it also featured BC’s first wave pool.


Langley streetscapes, buildings, and green space have been featured in many us and Canadian feature films, Made-for-tV movies, commercials, and tV series. Next time you rent a movie or head to the theatre, take a close look and see if you recognize any locations from your visit to Langley. some spots you should keep your eyes open for include Café Planet Java, Canadian Museum of Flight, the Village of Fort Langley itself, the Fort Langley National Historic site, the Fort Langley Community Hall, the Hill top Café, and Porters Coffee and tea House.

In addition to BC’s wealth of talent both in front of and behind the scenes, film producers love the diverse landscape of the area—from the mountain backdrops to valley farmland, bustling streetscapes to picturesque scenery. Being in the same time zone as Hollywood, California is another benefit! Fort Langley is said to be scouted by a film crew at least twice a week, possibly because of its visual similarity to upper state, New York.

A trip to Langley can transport you into a battle with the paranormal in Supernatural, or into storeybrook, a town filled with fictional characters come to life in Once Upon a Time. You just might step into a frozen arctic landscape in the Yellowknife-based show Arctic Air, or find yourself surrounded by vampires from the Vampire Diaries. In the heat of the summer months, you could even turn the corner and enter a winter wonderland set, as holiday movies are often filmed in the Village of Fort Langley year round.

Hidden gem

If you’re exploring Campbell Valley regional Park, you just might stumble upon a forgotten gem. the historic Langley speedway was an active race track from the 60s to early 80s and was one of the few sites in BC to host Nascar events. Walking around the track, you can still see some of the damage along the walls that were caused by crashes.

Ear-ore, one of the resident horses at Back in the saddle Again, is named so due to the fact that his right ear is positioned on a 90 degree angle.

As a foal, under different ownership, he suffered from frostbite and his ear was bent. After he recovered it never went back to normal.

They depended on the river and land for their survival and livelihood. The First Nations people who established their home in the Langley region are served by Kwantlen, a hun’qumi’num word meaning “tireless runner”. The Kwantlen (Qw’?ntl’en) First Nation were recorded in 1827 as the largest group on the lower Fraser, with a traditional territory extending from Mud Bay in Tsawwassen, through the Serpentine and Salmon Rivers and along the Fraser River, east past Mission. The First Nations continue to be an important part of the Langley communities.

As with many BC communities, the completion of the CPR Railway in 1886 led to new settlement and the construction of the BC Electric and Great Northern Railways in the early 1900s which further encouraged growth and a prosperous forestry and agriculture base. In order to serve the growing population, service centres such as Langley Prairie (now the City of Langley), Aldergrove, Milner, Murrayville and Fort Langley emerged.

Human occupation of the area that we now call Langley can be traced back to the retreat of the last glaciers some 10,000 years ago. First Nations people, known as the sto:lo, or “river people”

are thought to have been the principal occupants of most of the Fraser Valley throughout the last several millennia.

Another significant link to the development of today’s communities was the completion of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1961 which greatly influenced the industrial, commercial and residential development throughout Langley. But the steady urban growth also impacted the available farmland and in 1973 the Agricultural Land Reserve was created to help direct urban development and balance the agricultural use. Today, approximately 77% of Langley’s land mass remains green and protected by inclusion in the Land Reserve (ALR) and much of the population is accommodated in the developments of Walnut Grove, Fort Langley, Murrayville, Willoughby, Aldergrove, Brookswood and the City of Langley. Langley is known as a “Community of Communities”.

A space odyssey

When you first arrive in Walnut Grove, you can’t help but notice the landmark that this community has become known for. No—the aliens haven’t landed! the out of this world spaceship architecture is the Colossus Movie theatre, one of only seven Famous Players Colossus movie theatres owned by Cineplex in Canada. All year I had been training for this 160km GranFondo and today I was confident I was ready. spare tire tubes—check, bike pump—check, water bottle and gel-packs—check. Anticipation was building as I joined the more than 1200 cyclists. At the sound of the start horn—we were off!

I couldn’t help but notice the natural landscapes and beautiful roadways. tall red cedar trees, emerald green douglas fir trees, lime green willow trees and the occasional field of grasses or yellow lazy susan sunflowers. What a lush area of the Fraser Valley. this really is the cycling mecca of British Columbia —what a picture to behold!

With a perfect route, well stocked aid stations, the best of volunteers offering words of support and reassurance from the easily accessible motorcycle mechanics along the way, I knew I would meet my personal goal and make the finish line.

As I rounded Mavis street in Fort Langley, I could hear the music from the stage and words of encouragement rang out from my friends and family! I didn’t have a lot left in my legs, but I planned to blast through the finish line arch looking strong and get that finisher’s medal.

i did it—it was my perfect day!
