TED HOTALING

Ted Hotaling enters his fifth season as head men’s basketball coach at New Haven in 2014-15.

The ninth head coach in program history, Hotaling ranks third in program history in winning percentage and became the fifth winningest coach at New Haven last season.,Of the nine head coaches in New Haven men’s basketball history, eight of them have coached,at least 100 games for the Chargers. Hotaling’s 55-45 mark through his first 100 contests was the best, since 1995.

Hotaling led the 2014-15 Chargers to the program’s second back-to-back appearances in the NCAA postseason. New Haven also clinched back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the 2002-03 and 2003-04 campaigns. The Chargers’ 14-6 record in the NE-10 was the second-best since joining the conference in 2008-09 and helped lead the squad to a second-place finish in the Southwest Division.

Hotaling coached the nations leading team in personal fouls per game (13.6), while the Chargers ranked second in Division II in fewest turnovers per game (8.9). New Haven also ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense (6th) and field goal percentage defense (9th).

For the second straight season, Eric Anderson was named the NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-America Honorable Mention recognition - the first such mention for UNH in 24 years. Anderson finished the season leading the Northeast-10 Conference and ranked second in Division II in defensive rebounds per game (8.97). He also ranked third in the nation with 20 double-doubles. Anderson was joined by Jeffery Adkins and Justin Exum and two-time All-Northeast-10 honorees.

In 2012-13, Hotaling mentored the Chargers to a 20-9 record – their first 20-win campaign since 2003-04. New Haven reached the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004 and earned its first win on the national stage since 2003 with a victory over Dominican in the NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinals. The Chargers’ 16-6 conference record and third-place regular-season finish were both the best for the team since joining the Northeast-10.

Hotaling’s Chargers led the NE-10 and ranked 10th nationally in fewest turnovers committed per game (11.0) and slotted at 13th in the country in scoring defense with an NE-10-leading 61.1 points per game allowed. New Haven also finished second in the conference and 38th in Division II in free throw percentage (74.3).

Individually, Hotaling mentored 2012-13 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year Eric Anderson, who finished second in the nation with 18 double-doubles while ranking third with 12.0 rebounds per game and ninth in blocked shots at 2.45 per game. Jeffery Adkins and Justin Exum also each claimed All-Northeast-10 honors.

Hotaling led the Chargers to a 15-13 record in 2011-12 - a seven-win improvement from the previous campaign and the club’s first winning season since 2004-05. New Haven also qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, winning

a First Round contest at Pace before falling in a 54-51 heartbreaker at Adelphi in the Quarterfinals.

In his first season as head coach, the Chargers posted an 8-18 overall mark and a 6-16 record in the Northeast-10 Conference. Throughout the season, New Haven ranked among the top three-point shooting teams in Division II. Freshman Justin Exum concluded the season ranked 17th nationally in three-point field goals per game. He was also the highest ranked freshman in that category. As a team, UNH ranked 31st in three-point field goal percentage and 32nd in three-point field goals per game.

With over 15 years of college coaching experience, Hotaling most recently spent five seasons as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University. While at EKU, the Colonels enjoyed a number of record-setting seasons, including two postseason runs. Hotaling’s main responsibilities at EKU included working with the guards and coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts.

In 2007, the Colonels earned a berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament. EKU was selected to the College Basketball Invitational this season after amassing a 20-11 regular season record. The Colonels were one of the best offensive teams in the country during Hotaling’s tenure as well. In 2010, EKU ranked in the top 10 in three-point field goals made, turnovers per game and assist/turnover ratio. The Colonels also broke the Ohio Valley Conference record for three-pointers made in back-to-back seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10).

Prior to arriving at Eastern Kentucky, Hotaling served four years as a full-time assistant at Yale University from 2001-05. He also served one season as an assistant at UNH in 2000-01. The Niverville, N.Y. native began his coaching career at Adelphi University in 1998 where he spent one season as an assistant.

Hotaling earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University at Albany in 1995 and later earned his master’s degree from Adelphi University. In the fall of 2012, he was inducted into the University at Albany Great Dane Hall of Fame as both an individual student-athlete and as a member of the 1993-94 men’s basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight.

After graduating from Albany he went on to play professionally in Europe for the Cardiff Phoenix Basketball Club in Cardiff, Wales, and the Plymouth Rotolok Raiders in Plymouth, England.

Hotaling and his wife, Keely Garden, have two children – Owen and Susan.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN • 2014-15 CHARGER MEN’S BASKETBALL

Coming off of a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA postseasonandtheprogram’sfirst-evertriptotheNortheast-10Conference Championship Game, the University of New Haven men’s basketball team looks to preserve its place among the NE-10 and East Region elite in 2014-15. The Chargers return twostartersandsevenstudent-athletesintotalforthefifthsea-son under Head Coach Ted Hotaling. The Chargers wrapped up the 2013-14 season with a record of 21-9 – their second straight 20-win campaign. New Haven was one of the nation’s premier defensive teams last winter, ranking sixth in Division II with 62.5 points per game allowed and led the country with a mere 13.6 personal fouls committed per game. On the offensive end, the Chargers rated second in the country with just 8.9 turnovers per outing. FRONTCOURTLeading the way in the post for the Blue and Gold will be All-America forward Eric Anderson, who will enter his senior season ranked 29th all-time at New Haven with 1,099 career points. The two-time Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a 2013-14 First Team All-NE-10 and Daktronics All-East Region honoree, Anderson scored 15.8 points per contest and ranked second in the Northeast-10 with 11.7 rebounds per game. He also rated second in the conference with 2.5 blocks per outing. Anderson has already claimed the New Haven all-time record with 197 career blocked shots, surpassing the 191 shots turned away by Herb Watkins from 1984-88. The only player in program history with 70 or more blocks in two seasons, Anderson’s 75 re-jections in 2013-14 surpassed Watkins’ single-season program record of 73 blocks established in 1986-87. Cyrus James, the Chargers’ second returning starter, is also a

forceontheblock.JameswasNewHaven’smostefficientscorerat78-for-137(56.9percent)fromthefloorenrouteto6.3pointsto go along with 7.8 rebounds per game. He ranked ninth in the NE-10 in rebounding and 10th in blocked shots (1.2 bpg). After missing all of the 2012-13 season due to injury, Samir McDaniels re-entered the fold last season and came off the bench in all 30 contests. McDaniels averages 2.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in his career with the Blue and Gold. He was invited to play in the NYC Mayor’s Cup Boys’ Basketball High School All-Star Game. A four-year starter at Capital Preparatory Magnet High School in Hartford, Levy Gillespie is the program’s all-time assists leader and ranks third in school history in both points (1,959) and rebounds. During the 2013-14 campaign, he averaged 26.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals to guide the Trailblazers to a Constitution State Conference title. Gillespie was a four-time All-CSC honoree as well as a consensus First Team All-State pick by both the New Haven Register and Hartford Courant. A 6-2 guard, Tommy Hunt was one of Rhode Island’s top high school players in his senior season at St. Andrew’s School in 2013-14. Hunt was a three-time All-State selection by the Provi-dence Journal. He averaged 15.5 points per game in his senior season, helping the Saints to a 27-5 record. Hunt earned All-NEPSAChonorsinhisfinalscholasticcampaignthatendedwithatriptotheNEPSACClassAAsemifinals. UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN • 2014-15 CHARGER MEN’S BASKETBALL

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityof

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field,ofmorethan6,000studentathletes.Amongthe many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’sbasketball, women’scrosscountry, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off a banner season in 2013-14, as the Northeast-10 saw three teams claim national championships. First, the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program won the NCAA Championship this past December, followed by the Bentley University women’sbasketballteamclaimingitsfirst-ever

From thefieldofplay to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, anon-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwith life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 40 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT child.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in theclassroom.
