TICKET INFORMATION
The Griffin is a legendary creature with the head,
beak, and wings of an eagle, the body of a lion,
and occasionally, the tail of a serpent or scorpion.
Its origin lies somewhere in the Middle East where
it is found in the paintings and sculptures of the
ancient Babylonians, Assyrians, and Persians. In
Greek mythology, they took gold from the stream
Arimaspias and, neighbors of the Hyperboreans, they
belonged to Zeus. The later Romans used them for
decoration and, even in Christian times, the Griffin
motif often appears. Griffins were frequently used as
gargoyles on medieval churches and buildings.

2013 Westminster Griffins Men’s Lacrosse
Westminster begins the season with a No. 3 national ranking and the
favorites to win the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference. They return 24
players from the 2012 squad that finished 16-4 and won a second straight
RMLC championship. The Griffins also welcome in 11 newcomers to help
replace the 17 players lost from last year’s team.
The Griffins averaged 15
goals per game last season
while attempting 44.8 shots
per contest. They totaled
174 assists on their 300
goals and scored on 28-of-69
opportunities when playing
a man-up (40.6 percent).
Westminster scored in double
figures in all but two games
during the 2012 season and
nine times went for at least
17 goals.
On the defensive end,
Westminster surrendered
7.65 goals per outing and
allowed just 26.7 shot
attempts per game. The
opposition converted 21.5
percent of their man-up
chances (14-65) while posting 61 assists. The Griffins held a 716-436 edge
in ground balls and won 71.4 percent of faceoffs. Westminster had a clear
success rate of 79.4 percent while limiting the opposition to 61.2 percent.
Griffins senior Jake Arthur was named as the MCLA DII Preseason Player of
the Year. Arthur scored 53 goals last season and added 12 assists for 65
points. He led the team with 165 shots and put 107 of them on cage. Arthur
twice tallied the game-winner for the Griffins while adding four goals with
the man-advantage.
The 2013 season marks the last as a MCLA DII member for the Griffins.
Westminster announced in October that they will be moving into Division I
starting in the 2014 season. Westminster has been a DII member since the
program started in 2007. The Griffins won the DII National Championship
in 2008 and have qualified
for the national tournament
every year. They will
remain a member of the
Rocky Mountain Lacrosse
Conference and join current
DI members: Brigham Young,
Colorado State, Colorado,
Utah, Utah State and New
Mexico.
Westminster has once again
put together one of the
toughest schedules in the
country. Along with the two
ranked teams the Griffins
play this weekend, including
defending DII national
champion St. Thomas,
Westminster will play the
defending DI national champion, Colorado State, next weekend. The Griffins
will also play five of the six RMLC DI teams this season in advance of moving
to D1 next season. Along with CSU, the Griffins play Brigham Young (Utah),
Colorado, Utah and Utah State.
Arthur enters the season as the MCLA Preseason Player of the Year and he
looks to improve on his 53 goals and 12 assists that he totaled in 2012. He
scored on 32.1 percent of his shot attempts as a junior and he finished with
107 shots on goal. Arthur
scored in 18 of the 19 games
he played last season and has
at least three goals in eight
contests. He twice netted
six goals in a game, first
against Utah and then in the
MCLA quarterfinals against
Davenport. Arthur enters
the season with 110 career
goals to rank third in school
history and he sits fifth at
Westminster with 128 career
points.
Sophomore Matt Hearn is
back after finishing third on
the team last season with
43 goals scored. He also
recorded 15 assists for 58
total points while attempting
104 shots. Hearn led the
Griffins with six man-up goals last year and he also was credited with four
game-winning goals. He scored on 41.3 percent of his shots to lead the team
and the middie claimed 35 ground balls.
Collin Madsen made a quick impression on the Griffin attack during his
freshman campaign. Madsen was third on the 2012 team with 65 points
thanks to 36 goals and 29 assists. His assist total ranked second among all
Griffins and he place fourth in shots (98) and shots on cage (64). Madsen
struck five times with a man-advantage and he picked up 36 ground balls.
Junior Chris Burckle is back after spending more time in cage than any
other Griffin in 2012. Burckle
played 889 minutes in goal
last season and finished with
a 60.6 save percentage. He
went 16-3 overall during the
season with a 7.16 goals-
against-average. In the 20
games he played, Burckle
allowed three goals or less 10
times. He came up with eight
games with 10 or more saves,
including a career-high 18
against St. Thomas.

MASON GOODHAND
Mason Goodhand leads the Westminster
men’s lacrosse program into its seventh
season. Goodhand has been at the helm
of the program since it began in 2007 and
in two years led them to a MCLA National
Championship.
In six season with the Griffins, Goodhand has led the team to an 89-34
(.724) mark and four RMLC championships. They have gone 22-2 (.917) in
conference games and advanced to the MCLA National Championships each

lost in the first round.
Under Goodhand’s direction, Westminster has had 20 players earn MCLA
All-American recognition with 47 being named an all-conference selection.
There has been one RMLC Offensive Player of the Year, one Defensive Player
of the Year and Goodhand was named the league’s Coach of the Year in
2007. The Griffins have also placed seven on the MCLA Scholar Athlete list.
Goodhand led the Griffins to a 16-4 overall record and another undefated
conference mark at 3-0 last season. They claimed the Rocky Mountain
Lacrosse Conference title with a 17-7 win voer Fort Lewis in the
championship game. The Griffins defeated Saint Mary’s (Calif.) in the first

end with a 12-11 loss against Davenport quarterfinals of the tournament.
During the 2011 season, Westminster compiled a 13-8 record and were a

win over Northern Colorado in double-overtime. After taking down Western
Oregon 20-15 in the first round of the MCLA National Championships, the
Griffins fell 9-7 to eventual champion St. Thomas (Minn.) in the quarterfinals.
Goodhand led the Griffins to a 13-8 mark during the 2010 campaign. They
finished second in the RMLC and lost to Utah Valley in the championship
game of the RMLC Tournament. The Griffins advanced to the semi-finals of
the MCLA National Championships as a 10-seed.
Head CoachSeventh Season

dropped a 16-13 decision with Northern Colorado in the RMLC championship
game. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the MCLA event with an opening
round victory over MIssouri State.
In 2008, Westminster won the national championship in just the second year
of the programs existence. They finished the year with a perfect 6-0 record
in the RMLC. On May 17, 2008, they defeated Grand Valley State 17-10 to
claim the MCLA National Chamionship, the first national championship in
Westminster history.
The 2007 squad went 18-3 overall in the first year of the program. They
were 7-0 in the RMLC and advanced to the semi-finals of the MCLA National
Tournament.

BRAD LAVOIE
Brad Lavoie enters his third season at the helm of the Westminster offense with a 30-12 record and back-to-back conference
championships. His first two seasons have seen enhanced offensive production and record setting numbers in 2012 with the
Griffins finishing nationally ranked in the top 10 both years.
Last season (2012) showcased a diverse and powerful Griffin offense which saw six players score 20 or more goals and eight
players reach double digits assists before losing in the Quarterfinals of the MCLA National Championship Tournament. This
fast paced offensive system produced 301 goals (56 percent assisted) in 20 games for an average of 15 goals per game.
Teammates Gian Sexsmith (55/31) at attack and Jake Arthur (47/14) at midfield earned First Team All-American accolades in 2012 with Lavoie’s mentorship
and are the first offensive players for Westminster to earn this honor since 2008.
A 2003 graduate of the University of Hartford (Conn.) with a B.A. in Mass Communication, Lavoie played four seasons for legendary coach Jack McGetrick
as an attackman. He served as senior captain for the Hawks and helped capture a share of the America East Conference Regular Season Championship as a
freshman in 2000 along with Hofstra and Delaware respectively.
Lavoie grew up in Nashua, N.H. and played his prep lacrosse at Nashua HS for New England Lacrosse Hall of Famer Gordon Webb. Lavoie was a three-year
starter for the Panthers, helping to guide his team to a N.H. State Championship win in 1998 as junior and state runner up in 1999 as a senior.
He and his wife Amy reside in Salt Lake City, Utah with their yellow lab Bandit.

In September 2006, Shay Wyatt was hired as Director of Athletics at Westminster College. Under his guidance the
intercollegiate athletic program has experienced unprecedented growth and success. Wyatt’s leadership has led to increases
in the number of sports offered, enrollment, academic and athletic success, departmental budget, community service efforts
amongst student-athletes, fundraising, corporate partners, ticket revenue, attendance at athletic events, coaches and support
staff and strategic planning efforts for the Athletics Department.
In addition, Westminster Athletics has experienced facility enhancements, improved eligibility and compliance processes, branding and website technologies,
licensing and apparel agreements have been established and a student-athlete
advisory committee and student fan group were formed. Wyatt has served on
various institutional committees and is a member of the National Administrative
Committee of the NAIA which sets policy and procedures for the national
organization.
Prior to Westminster College, Wyatt served as Director of Sports Marketing
and Bruin Club at Salt Lake Community College in 2006. While only at SLCC
for a short period of time, he secured the athletic department’s largest ever
corporate sponsorship.
From 2001-2006, Wyatt served as the Wildcat Club Executive Director at
Weber State University. He was responsible for the development efforts for the
athletics department including annual giving, major gifts, endowments, special
events and donor relations. The Wildcat Club experienced an increase in annual
giving totals each year Wyatt was at the helm, including a 17% increase in 2004.
He was instrumental in securing more than $350,000 in football suites, club
seating and basketball preferred seating.
Wyatt made his way to Weber State via Utah Valley State College where he
served as the Director of Development for Athletics from 1999-2001. He
was responsible for creating the fund raising arm of the athletic department,
serving as the first-ever development director at UVSC. In this role he defined all
aspects of annual giving and major gift opportunities. Upon his arrival at UVSC
he increased annual giving by 30% in his first year. He served as a member of
the strategic planning committee, planning the college’s move from NJCAA to
NCAA Division I.
From 1995-1998, Wyatt served as the Athletic Events Coordinator at the
University of Utah. He was responsible for all aspects of event and facility
management. He served as Assistant Tournament Manager for the 1997
NCAA West Region First/Second Rounds Men’s Basketball Tournament. He
represented the athletics department as a liaison for athletic facility renovation
and construction projects including the $50 million dollar, 50,000-seat
football stadium renovation of Rice-Eccles Stadium and several other facility
construction projects totaling more than $4 million.
A native of Murray, Utah, Wyatt attended Bethel College in Newton, Kansas
where he was a letterman in football. He graduated in 1993 with a degree
in health, physical education and recreation. He holds a Masters degree from
Wichita State University in sports administration. Wyatt prepped locally at
Murray High School (Utah.) He attended Cisco (Texas) JC and Snow (Utah) JC
where he played football for both schools. Wyatt is married to the former
Mickelle Marston. They have two sons Drew (8) and Jake (5).

Payne Gymnasium houses the newly renovated Griffins strength and
athletic training facilities, auxiliary basketball court, locker rooms, and
offices for men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer. Built during the
term of President Herbert W. Reherd (1913–1939), it was named after the
president of the Board of Trustees and manager of the local J.C. Penney
Company; groundbreaking was July 1928 and dedication January 11, 1929.
Though the college worried that it was frivolous to spend money on a
gymnasium, the facility, designed by architect Walter E. Ware, provided
badly needed recreation for the school and groups in the entire Sugar
House area. It was added to and remodeled in 1970 under President
Manford Shaw (1968–1976), and has housed the basketball and volleyball
programs, dances, speakers,
luncheons, career fairs,
orientations, and a variety
of other cultural and social
student events—including
being the practice facility for
the Utah Jazz from 1979 to
May 1999.
BEHNKEN FIELD HOUSE
The Dolores Dore Eccles Heatlh, Wellness and Athletic Center is a three-story, 84,500-square-foot facility, completed in 2006, that houses Griffins Athletics and
includes a swimming pool, full complement of fitness equipment, a weight room and exercise studio, and a technically challenging, 46-foot climbing wall. Above a field
house that holds 1,200 spectators is a suspended running track with a high-tech surface and corner windows with views. The field house includes an athletic training
room, locker rooms, team meeting rooms, coaches offices, and equipment storage space for our popular Griffin intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.

DUMKE FIELD
Dumke Field, on the site of the Dane Hansen Stadium, was opened October 2, 1949, by college president Robert D. Steele (1939–1952). It was a gift of the George
Hansen family in memory of a son and brother, Lt. Dane Hansen, Class of 1940, who lost his life in World War II. Having had seating for 1,200 attendants, the stadium
had been the college soccer and activities field, commencement green, and later a paved parking facility. In fall 2005, it was transformed into a parking structure, with
an elevated artificial turf athletic field on top. This facility is now the home field for the Griffins men’s and women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGEWestminster is a nationally recognized, comprehensive liberal arts college. With a broad array of graduate and undergraduate programs, Westminster is distinguished by its unique environment for learning. Westminster prepares students for success through active and engaged learning, real world experiences, and its vibrant campus community. Westminster’s unique location, adjacent to the Rocky Mountains and to the dynamic city of Salt Lake, further enriches the college experience.
While we’re proud that Westminster is consistently ranked as a “Top Tier” college and recognized on the list of “Great Schools” by the U.S.News & World Report, and that Westminster was named “Best in the West” by the Princeton Review, we hope you’ll come to campus, whether you’re a high school student or one of our alumni, and experience the Westminster community for yourself.
ACADEMICSWestminster offers more than 70 academic programs, including 34 majors, from accounting and international business to nursing and sociology. The most popular majors are business, nursing, psychology, and education. In addition, the college offers a variety of minors and 10 graduate programs. About 95 percent of the students go to graduate school or are employed within six months of graduation. The nursing program has a 100 percent placement rate. In addition to Westminster’s successful outcomes, a Utah Foundation study found that Westminster graduates have among the highest starting salaries of any university graduates in the state. These high starting salaries were attributed in part to the fact that nearly 70 percent of students complete an internship before they graduate.
Students choose Westminster College for many reasons, including our intense focus on individual students and their learning, the combination of liberal education and professional studies, our active learning experiences, dynamic campus environment, and the real world experiences we offer to ensure that our students are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
HISTORYWestminster College has played a pivotal role in the educational heritage of the intermountain area. Founded in 1875 as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute, a preparatory school, Westminster first offered college classes in 1897 as Sheldon Jackson College. Named in honor of its primary benefactor, Sheldon Jackson, the college operated for many years on the Collegiate Institute campus in downtown Salt lake City. Gradually the institute became identified as the college preparatory department, and high school classes continued to be an integral part of the curriculum until 1945. In 1902, college trustees adopted the new name, Westminster. Moving to its present location in 1911, Westminster became the first accredited two-year junior college in the intermountain area. In 1935 Westminster modified its curriculum to qualify as a four-year junior college and in 1949 became a four-year liberal arts institution offering baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences.
Today Westminster exists as a fully independent, privately funded, nondenominational, comprehensive liberal arts institution of higher learning with selected graduate programs, meeting the West’s educational needs as it has since 1875.
