President’s 2012 Report

Administration

The club web page is to be updated and developed through the Masters Swimming

WA (MSWA) site, hopefully during the first quarter of 2013.

Funding/sponsorship for the Alcoa Mandurah Masters Open Water Swim increased

from last year. Funding from MSWA for a new club laptop and lap clock was

successful.

The club’s newsletter experienced an upgrade, and was placed on our web page.

The club finances were kept in order throughout the year by Treasurer Des. Des

also did a great job on the budget for the open water swim (OWS).

Throughout the year I attended

all MSWA Council of Clubs meetings with a committee member

the MSWA Awards night for swimmers, clubs, officials, and service recognition

OWS sanctioning meeting with Des Seery

club support program launch at Rushton Park with Deb Brown

pool development meeting with City of Mandurah. All pool development meetings

have had club representation

president’s meeting, with guest speakers on attracting volunteers and developing

social media within clubs for communication

Coaching

Des Seery became an accredited Masters Club Coach.

The club ran an exhibition training night at the Pinjarra Aquatic Centre.

Des and I attended a coaching clinic run by Simon Redmond, focussing on energy

system management in swimming.

Ivan Wingate, Des and I met to discuss coaching, and program planning

throughout the open water and pool seasons.

Swimming

The club has been building in open water swimming, and won an award for its

development and performance in this area.

The club hosted its first ocean swim at Henson Street, fully funded from its

sponsors. A sub-committee was developed to manage the event.

The English Channel team (Sue Giles, Deb Bloor, Ken Phillips, John Reyburn, Ray

Reynolds and Alex Gailbraith) inspired many swimmers to join the Brass Monkey

Group and swim in the ocean all year round. The club followed the team’s progress

throughout the build-up, and they gained much attention, and respect for their

dedication, commitment and success.

The club had good participation throughout the year in open water Be Active Club

Challenges, State, National and international pool events, with the club and

individuals receiving worthy recognition with wins, or placings at the highest level.

Events/Activities

We hosted the following events during 2012

Social

Thank you to Sue Johnston and Sue Giles for organizing social events throughout the

year. Each event was well supported and enjoyed by attendees.

Safety

Thank you to Jim McQuade for looking after safety management for the club, in the

pool and open water.

We reviewed risk management for our OWS, to address the need for improved water

safety, including the use of shark-patrol aircraft, ensuring the right people are in the

right position on the water and a knowledge on how to respond to emergency

situations.

Growth

The club has been involved with the MARC re-development planning phase. The

City is looking at ways the club can contribute towards the project in unison with

other users.

The club has a need to develop a Department of Sport and Recreation initiative to

promote volunteering within the membership, and encourage member participation

in club management.

Finally

My thanks go to

the club committee for their help and enthusiasm throughout the year

to the OWS sub-committee for its work in preparation leading up to and on the day

of the 2012 and 2013 open water event at Henson Street

all our club volunteers, and family members for their input throughout the year

from coordinating, coaching, timekeeping, officiating, and catering.

All the best for Fitness, Friendship and Fun

Tuesdays and Thursdays are club training sessions led by a club coach. There are four

lanes catering for individual levels of fitness and ability and members select a lane

which suits their ability. All swimmers are advised to put in only as much effort as

they are comfortable with.

Sundays are more relaxed with swimmers partaking in the endurance program or a

leisurely swim of their own choosing. Endurance swims are an excellent way of

monitoring your own fitness. On the first Sunday of each month, all swimmers are

encouraged to complete a 400 metre endurance swim. See below for details of the

Vorgee Endurance 1000 program.

Vorgee Endurance 1000

The Vorgee Endurance 1000 program is a national swimming program designed to

encourage people to compete in distances from 400m to 60 minutes duration in a

variety of strokes. Points are awarded to the Club for each swim completed and

published at the end of the year. The club with most points wins the VORGEE

ENDURANCE 1000 trophy.

To score points in the Vorgee Endurance 1000, a swimmer is awarded points for each

swim up to a maximum of five swims in each of the 400 and 800 metre swims.

However, swimmers are only allowed to swim each event once a month (e.g. only one

x 400m freestyle swim can be recorded in any month). For longer swims, points are

awarded for: 3 x 1500 metre, 3 x 30 minute swims, 3 x 45 minute swims and 3 x 60

minute swims.

All swims will be loaded onto the Vorgee Endurance 1000 program by the Recorder on

a monthly basis to allow progress totals to be seen online.

2012 Swim Calendar

Interclub/State Swims

All members, regardless of their ability or competitive spirit are encouraged to

participate in LiveLighter Club Challenge (LLCC) events and the State Championships.

important, it’s the personal achievement that really matters. Events are for distances

to 200 metres.

Details regarding start times, event programs and other information are posted on the

noticeboard approximately four weeks before each event. Events are also advised by

announcement on training nights and in the Club’s newsletter. The 2013 interclub

Open Water Swims

These swims are held from November to April providing a personal challenge for many

swimmers. They can be a lot of fun and a rewarding experience.

Full details of open water swims and other distance swims are posted on the

noticeboard in the equipment shed. They can also be found on the Masters Swimming

WA webpage www.mswa.asn.au.

An open water swim calendar is issued annually to provide a range of locations and

distances to suit all swimmers who like the challenge of open water swimming.

Events are held in lakes, harbours, the Swan River and the ocean from October to

April. These predominantly summer events are organised by various bodies,

including Masters clubs, surf clubs and Swimming WA. Distances offered range from

the 400m novice event at Fremantle to the 19.7km Rottnest Channel Swim. Many

club members join others each year to form duos and/or teams to compete in the

Rottnest swim.

Details regarding start times, event location and other information are posted on the

noticeboard approximately four weeks before each event. Events are also advised by

announcement on training nights and in the Club’s newsletter.

Doddi’s Beach Swims

Initially, Club members met at Doddi’s Beach on Halls Head Parade on Saturday

mornings for a swim of whatever distance each swimmer fancied. However, the

popularity of this swim (with the convenience of having a Dome coffee shop across

the road) subsequently led to swims also taking place on Mondays, Wednesdays and

Fridays. Numbers vary according to the time of year and other commitments but

during summer months around 25 swimmers per swim is the norm. Only the

Saturday swim is an official Club event.

These are unsupervised swims, so for safety reasons, all swimmers must wear swim

caps for visibility and must always swim with a buddy.

Vorgee Million Metre Award

The Vorgee Million Metre Awards acknowledge progress from the “learn to swim”

beginner to the distance swimmer. These awards are intended to stimulate members

to strive for greater fitness and are open to all registered members of Masters

Swimming Australia (MSA).

The Million Metre Awards were established in 2001 for one, three, and ten million

metres. In 2004, they were expanded to include five and seven million metres. In

2007 the two million metre award was added. In 2008, the Vorgee award was

expanded to recognise swimmers who attain fifteen million metres and above.

Upon successful completion of 1 million, 2 million, 3 million, 5 million, 7 million, and

10 million metres, members are awarded with

a polo shirt and certificate (1 million)

a polo shirt and certificate (2 million)

a polar fleece, engraved plaque, and a certificate (3 million)

a polo shirt, engraved plaque, certificate, and Vorgee gift pack (5 million)

a polar fleece vest, engraved plaque, certificate, and Vorgee gift pack (7 million)

a taslon jacket, engraved plaque, certificate, and Vorgee gift pack (10 million)

All garments are embroidered with the MSA logo, the Vorgee logo, the words “One

(Two, Three, Five, Seven or Ten) Million Metre Club”, and the recipient’s name.

As you swim, record your distances covered in training and races using the Record

Card. Once distances are completed, contact MSWA to obtain an award application

form. Once all details are verified, the award will be processed at the National Office

and sent to MSWA to arrange the presentation. You can download the application

form from the MSA website but it must be sent to your branch for processing.

Brief Masters History

AUSSI - Australian Union of Senior Swimmers International - started in WA in 1977.

Membership is open to any person aged 18 years and over who is interested in swimming for

fitness, friendship and fun. The name “AUSSI” was dropped in 2010 and the name Masters

Swimming Australia (MSA) adopted.

MSA encourages people to participate in a swimming group to learn how to swim correctly, to

improve fitness, to set and achieve personal goals and above all to enjoy swimming. MSA

swim meets are held throughout the year at Club, Interclub, State and National level. As a

member of MSA, you can participate in all swim meets, there being no qualifying times.

MSA operates through a structure of local incorporated Clubs affiliated with a State Branch of

the National Association. There are 34 Masters Swimming Clubs in Western Australia, 29 metropolitan

clubs and 5 country clubs, which includes our most recently affiliated clubs Kwinana Masters, Ballajura

Masters and Central Aquatics Masters.

Mannas History

The foundation membership emerged in July 1993 and our first training session was held in

the same month. Our inaugural AGM was held in September 1993 and the official AUSSI start

Page 15: 2013 Members’ Handbook - Tripodmhmannas.tripod.com/Forms/2013membershandbook.pdf · the MSWA Awards night for swimmers, clubs, officials, and service recognition OWS sanctioning

Page 15

date was 31 October 1993. It was not until January 13, 1994 that the Mandurah Mannas

Swimming Club was officially registered.

Membership started with six and within three years had grown to 50 members. The Club grew

from a local need and desire to bring people together, who wanted to swim for fitness and to

share fun times.

In 1993 Rob Worton, then Assistant Manager of the Mandurah Aquatic Centre, rang Kathy

McLeod to enquire whether she was interested in starting up an AUSSI swimming Club. Kathy

had been travelling to the Rockingham AUSSI to swim. Thrilled at the idea Kathy, together

with Allie Glynn, Rob Worton, and Gerry Green, formed the nucleus of the Club and prepared

all the necessary groundwork needed for registering the club.

Kathy McLeod and Jeannette Rein suggested that the Club colours be emerald green and dark

royal blue and Jeannette designed the Manna Logo. The Club’s identity had been created and

the name, colours and logo were officially registered with AUSSI.

To raise money for training gear to start the Club we organized a swim-a-thon and produced a

T-Shirt printed with words “Foundation Members” and the Club logo for the members to

purchase. Donations were received from Alcoa, Alex Lane Autos, and Wayne’s Windscreens.

Cameron McLeod designed and made our equipment cage.

After one year the membership had grown to 33 and we held our first social interclub swim

which was the inauguration of the Coates Challenge Shield. In the years to follow, Mandurah

Mannas, sporting its lively colours, participated regularly in interclub swims. Often, other clubs

commented on the well organized and happy crew who stood out because of their colourful

uniforms.

Club Highlights

1995

The club held a 10-hour lapathon with 18 swimmers involved, covering a total of 42

kilometres. The club also hosted its first official AUSSI interclub meet and became an

incorporated body, with the membership then at 54.

Seven females (K.Boyce, R. McPherson I.Taylor, J. Rein, A. Glynn, K. McLeod and R. Birch)

and two males (G. McAuslane and N. Aitken) became the first Mannas swimmers to compete

in an AUSSI National Championship which was held at Challenge Stadium.

1996

Neil Aitken attended the 6th Honda Masters Games in Alice Springs with 11 other swimmers

from WA.

1997

Cheryl Vidulich was the first of our membership to compete in an AUSSI National

Championships outside of Western Australia (Sydney).

1998

The Club won its first Pennant, Runner-up at the Interclub Finals and our interclub swim made

history with a record number of competitors for an outer metro-club.

1999

Rod Baker and Pam Walker competed in the Pan Pacific’s in Perth and the Club won the Fred

Johnston Pennant at the Interclub Finals with the final score of 774 (our nearest rival was

Belmont with 598 points).

Page 16: 2013 Members’ Handbook - Tripodmhmannas.tripod.com/Forms/2013membershandbook.pdf · the MSWA Awards night for swimmers, clubs, officials, and service recognition OWS sanctioning

Page 16

2000

The Club name was changed from “Mandurah Mannas AUSSI” to “Mandurah AUSSI Masters

Swimming”.

Warren Hewett was our first solo entrant in the Rottnest Channel Swim. Fund raising and

donations enabled the financing and construction of an equipment shed.

2001

A successful application was made to the City of Mandurah to build a storage shed near the

children's pool. The shed was erected and club members began to fit out the shed with
