Who is Barrie Reightler?

Barrie is the Director of Publications for the Maryland Thoroughbred Breeders Association. She has been through the life and death of The Maryland Horse and the creation and success of Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred.

Her AHP Legacy

Barrie became the 2001-2002 AHP President after her tenure on the Board of Directors that began in 1996. Next year will mark her 30th

year as an AHP member.

She was awarded the Chris Brune Spirit Award in 2004 for her willingness to serve the association through her creative talents as an award-winning designer.

What she is best known for:

Barrie has a quiet way of getting the job done - no matter what the job is—without a lot of fanfare. While many of you may not know Barrie well, you do know the numerous logos she has created for AHP seminars and association awards.

Here are just a few:

Her most memorable AHP photo…

Barrie riding aboard a Paint horse during a cattle roundup at the Vail, Colorado seminar in 1997.

Barrie loves fox hunting and photography. Her daughter, Betsy, was an AHP kid, attending many seminars with her mom.

What you might not know about Barrie…

Who is Frank Lessiter?

Frank has worked nearly 50 years as an agricultural journalist and has been editor and publisher of American Farriers Journalfor nearly 25 years.

The family’s 32-year-old Lessiter Publications business has 35 employees and produces nine publications, two annual international conferences, books, DVDs, special management reports, numerous e-mail newsletters and seven web sites.

His AHP Legacy

A member of several publishing associations, Frank is most proud to have served as both a director and the 2002-2003 AHP President. He was the innovator and first moderator of the 45 Ideas panel that AHP continues to hold every year at its seminars.

What he is best known for…

Frank loves family and he’s got a really big one. He and his wife, Pam, have four children and 14 grandchildren. He also has a great sense of humor as these next photos will show.

What you might not know about Frank…

He’s an avid reader of magazines, newspapers, and books. Over the years, Frank has received numerous awards for outstanding editorial and photography work including the prestigious Stephen Barr Award for a series of articles on horse abuse that appeared in American Farriers Journal.

Who is Doug Hayes?

Doug Hayes is Director of Business Development for the American Quarter Horse Association in Amarillo, Texas. Doug grew up on a Kansas farm and has owned horses all his life. He and his wife, Tadhi, have three children—Ben, Casey, and Emma Kate—and one grandchild.

His AHP Legacy

Doug has been involved in AHP for almost 25 years. He joined the AHP board of directors in 1997 and served as its 2003-2004 President. In 2011, he was awarded the Chris Brune Spirit Award for his willingness to give his all to AHP.

What he is best known for…

Doug is known as a “good hand.” He’s dependable, willing to do almost anything asked of him, and would come to your aid in a heartbeat.

And he can sing. He has been Willie Nelson, James Taylor, and now lead singer for the Village People. He would sing anything for AHP.

We have the proof!

What you might not know about Doug…

He loves heading and heeling, making furniture and being a grandfather. He is also a rabid Kansas State University football and basketball fan.

It’s my privilege and honor to present the 2013 AHP Champion award to three individuals who have not only been true supporters of AHP, but also longtime friends.
