The Preect System o Student Governance

The Ben Lippen School (BLS) boarding program student government is composed o preects. In the preect system o student governance, the student body selects by popular vote ve Ben

    Primary Expectations o Boarding Students

Ben Lippen students RESPECT others, authority, sel, and property. Ben Lippen students are open todierences in others (cultural, age, gender, religion, etc) and purpose to interact with all types opeople while taking care to communicate respectully. (Philippians 2:3)

Ben Lippen students are personally RESPONSIBLE or their own behavior and learning, exercisingsel-control over their actions and words. Ben Lippen students voluntarily ollow Ben Lippen rules,

willingly devote themselves to learning, and ulll their household responsibilities without beingasked or reminded regardless o whether they will be held accountable or their actions. Ben Lippenstudents respond to both correction and consequence with a repentant attitude when correction isnecessary. (2 Timothy 1:7)

    The Green and Gold System

Ben Lippen on-campus boarding students are classied within one o two living systems. Studentsliving in the gold system consistently demonstrate the Primary Expections (respect, responsibility, and integrity) in all areas o their lie, so they are aorded greater privileges and reedoms. Students

who do not consistently live out the Primary Expectations in all areas o their lie - as judged by theexpectations and guidelines in this Boarding Student Lie Handbook, the Ben Lippen High School StudentLie Handbook, and the decisions o BLS sta - live in the green system. The green system aords ewer

privileges and less reedom because students in the green system are still developing the necessarycharacter and maturity to successully handle greater reedom and responsibility.

New Ben Lippen boarding students typically begin lie at Ben Lippen in the gold system. I a student

makes choices that cause Ben Lippen sta to reclassiy the student to the green system, the studentwill be given a review date when the gold/green status will be reconsidered. A new review date (inaddition to other consequences) can be issued by Ben Lippen sta i the student makes additional

poor choices while being classied as green that do not demonstrate student compliance with thegreen system or the Primary Expectations. Anytime on or ater the review date, students classied asgreen may submit a letter o at least three paragraphs/statements to the boarding director describing:

    1. the specic behavior, attitude, etc. that led them to being classied as green;2. what the student learned through the discipline process; and3. how the student plans to avoid similar behavior, attitude, etc. in the uture.

A student unsure o how to compose a letter should seek assistance rom a BLS sta member.

The boarding director will consider the students letter and may additionally desire to meet with the

student and seek the opinions o the students houseparents and/or other BLS sta beore makinga decision. Ater considering the students request, the boarding director will either maintain thestudents green status and issue a new review date or reclassiy the student as gold.

A students green status does notautomatically expire on any given review date; a student must writean appeal letter as described above and wait or the decision o the boarding director. While waitingor the decision rom the boarding director, the student remains on green status.

    Discipline Structure and Administrative Prerogative

Obedience to boarding program rules and respectul compliance to the direction o Ben Lippensta is expected at all times rom Ben Lippen students. As much as possible, consequences or anymisbehavior will be naturally related to the oense. Boarding program consequences are meant to

be ormative, not punitive, in nature. Common consequences include loss o privileges, restrictionrom activities or interaction with others, work penalties, and/or behavioral probation. The BLSadministration retains at their sole discretion the prerogative to assign specic consequences up

to and including suspension/expulsion or boarding-related oenses. However, in cases warrantingexpulsion, the administration may, again at its own prerogative, choose to allow a student to withdrawin lieu o expulsion i circumstances warrant.

The ormal discipline process to address disobedience or non-compliance in a particular area typicallyollows the our steps outlined below:

First oense: BLS aculty/sta will counsel with the student regarding incorrect behavior.Student maybe placed on green status depending on the circumstances. Certain oenses, such as excessive lateness to school and technology oenses, carry an automatic penalty o at

least one week on green status even at the rst oense.

Second related oense: BLS aculty/sta will contact the students parent(s) - usually via emailor phone - to inorm them o the incorrect behavior and request their support in working withtheir son or daughter. Student will be placed on green status or a minimum o two weeks.

Third related oense: BLS administration will counsel with the student regarding incorrectbehavior and the students parent(s) will be contacted again. The serious nature o the

repeated oense will be clearly explained to both student and parent(s), and a ormalbehavioral contract may be written. Student will be placed on green status or a minimum othree weeks.

Fourth related oense: Fourth oenses in one general category are considered seriousviolations o school policy illustrating a students inability or unwillingness to ollow BLS rulesand respond to correction. Fourth oenses oten result in suspension, expulsion, or otherserious consequences. I a student is allowed to stay in the BLS boarding program despite a

ourth similar oense, the student can expect to be placed on green status or at least ourweeks.

    Guidelines

    Housing Arrangements

Unless special permission is granted by the BLS administration, all BLS students are required to live

throughout the school year with at least one parent or legal guardian as a day student, in BLS residenthouses on campus as a boarding student, or with an approved BLS homestay amily as a boardingstudent.

    English Language Use

Most international students enrolled in the BLS boarding program desire to improve their Englishlanguage skills to some degree. For this reason the BLS boarding program requests that students

use English as much as possible while at BLS (except when studying or practicing another oreignlanguage studied by the student). The ollowing chart contains a general schedule o times whenEnglish is expected to be exclusively used.

    Monday through Friday Saturday Sunday

    ENGLISH

    ONLY

    ALL LANGUAGES

    ALLOWED

    3:15 p.m. - 4 p.m.

    9 p.m. - Lights-Out All Day 9 p.m. - Lights-Out

Regardless o the time or day, BLS students are always expected to be respectul in their use olanguage. This means that when people are in a group where everyone does not speak the

same non-English language, English should be the language used by all members o the group.

During times designated asAll Languages Allowed, students may congregate by language groups ordiscussions, study groups, games, etc in a language other than English. However, English should stillbe used i a group member rom another language background or BLS sta is part o (or becomes

involved in) the discussion or activity.

All Languages are always allowed on school buses, during gym/eld activities, and at the caeteria ormeals (both CIU and BLS), so long as all members o the group speak the same non-English language

    (maintaining respect).

During English Onlytimes, students may ask BLS sta or permission to use another language briefy

to aid in communication or understanding, but students who are heard by BLS sta speaking non-English without specic permission will be required within 24 hours to create a number o vocabulary

notecards according to the students ESL level. The English-only policy applies to all areas o campusexcept those listed above. English must be spoken throughout the boarding houses, including student

    rooms.

The vocabulary will be provided by the houseparents. An oending student must study the cards untilhe or she knows the vocabulary to the satisaction o the houseparents.

TOEFL Requirements or Junior and Senior Status

In order to track student achievement and help the BLS guidance oce with college and universityplacements, all international students are required to ocially submit their TOEFL scores to Ben Lippen

School (TOEFL Code Number 3307) each time a student takes the TOEFL exam.

Furthermore, in an eort to realistically inorm BLS international students o their progress towardcollege readiness related to English prociency, BLS has adopted the specic standards outlined

below or grade level determination. The reasoning behind these standards is simple: colleges anduniversities that consider the TOEFL in their admissions process will generally only consideradmittinginternational applicants with TOEFL scores at or above 79. Students may appeal or an exception to the

standards given below through the guidance oce.

Beore a student can register or classes classied as a grade level listed below the student must (1)provide evidence that he or she has attained at least the minimum TOEFL score AND (2) provide ocial

transcripts rom the students prior school(s) demonstrating coursework that would allow a timelycompletion o BLS graduation requirements. Students may obtain inormation on specic graduationrequirements rom the BLS guidance oce.

within one semester at Ben Lippen, and that TOEFL-iBT score will be used to validate thestudents provisional placement OR re-place the student in the appropriate ESL level.

** ELLs who are not satised with their ESL class placements may appeal to the ESL departmentchair. In such cases, the students English language progress will be reviewed holistically, taking

into account the students TOEFL-iBT scores, past grades in ESL and non-ESL courses atBen Lippen, the total number o credits the student has earned at Ben Lippen, age, teacherrecommendations, summer school course work, motivation, work ethic, student goals, desire,

and attitude.*** ELLs may place out o either Advanced Reading & Writing OR Advanced Listening & Speaking by

achieving at least a 22 in the respective sections o the TOEFL-iBT, but students must remain in atleast one ESL class until they have achieved an overall score o a 80 at one test administration

    Technology

BLS embraces the benets - while at the same time recognizing the dangers and potentialinappropriate uses - o modern technology. For example, organization and communication allowed

by modern technology enhances the BLS high school experience, but pornography (includingsuggestively dressed men or women not necessarily portraying actual nudity) and online gamblingare explicitly prohibited in the BLS boarding program. In addition to content concerns, BLS believesthat healthy living requires limiting time absorbed in technological devices.

All student Internet access while on campus must be through the BLS-provided WiFi network.Devices that can access the Internet through another network (e.g. a cell phone or other device with

Internet access) should be set to use the BLS WiFi network while on campus. Devices with no otherunctionality other than to specically allow access to the Internet through another network (e.g. MiFi)

are prohibited in the resident houses.

I a students network username and password are used to access inappropriate online materials, alltechnological devices belonging to that student that can access the internet or store digital les willbe taken to an external computer service to be searched or inappropriate materials at the studentsexpense (regardless o whether inappropriate materials are ound on the students devices). Other

consequences, including green status, may also be levied. It is each students responsibility to keephis or her username and password secure so as to avoid being alsely fagged or inappropriate use. Also, using another persons username and password to access the BLS network is considered a major

integrity violation. Such behavior will merit signicant consequences.

The ollowing three technology regulations have been adopted by Ben Lippen:

    1. Students must provide their houseparents a list o all technological devices in their possessioncapable o accessing the internet (e.g. iTouch, iPad, computers, etc) or storing electronic les oany type (e.g. external hard drives, thumb drives, etc). Students must update their list wheneverthey obtain a new technological device. Students discovered with an unregistered technological

This is not a privilege that will be automatically granted on student request; the studentmust justiy the use o technology in his or her room as well as provide an estimated time ocompletion. Also, qualied students may only request permission to use technology in their

    3. For saekeeping and accountability, all electronic devices having a screen and all cell phones(regardless o whether the cell phone has a screen) must be placed in the resident house

computer closet at or beore the check-in time noted in the table below. This rule is enorced to

encourage sleeping during nighttime hours so that students can be awake and ully engaged inacademic or other activities the ollowing day. Failure to turn in all electronic devices each nightwill result in a student being classied as green.
