Who We AreOur HistoryMore than a half-century ago, the leaders of Columbia International University (CIU) had a vision for a model school—a center of influence in the Christian school movement—that would instill thorough Christian discipleship, high academic standards, and a call to world evangelization. This vision, coupled with faith and courage, gave birth to Ben Lippen School (BLS) in 1940. The name Ben Lippen, a Scottish phrase meaning “Mountain of Trust,” captures the essence upon which Ben Lippen was founded 72 years ago.

Before becoming a Christian school, Ben Lippen was a summer conference center operated by CIU (formerly Columbia Bible College), providing respite from the summer heat of Columbia, South Carolina. The cool mountain air of western North Carolina served as a beautiful and restful setting for those serving in full-time and lay ministry to receive encouragement and training.

Robert C. McQuilkin, CIU’s first president, realized that Ben Lippen was only being used three months out of the year and that it could meet another need—a need for quality Christian education for the children of missionaries. In 1940 Ben Lippen opened its doors to high school boys.

In 1952 when Robertson McQuilkin, son of Robert C. McQuilkin and 1944 Ben Lippen graduate, was named Ben Lippen’s headmaster, the school became coeducational. It flourished as a secondary school. In December of 1980, a fire destroyed Ben Lippen’s primary building. Years of planning to rebuild did not come to fruition. In 1988, Ben Lippen moved to new facilities adjoining the CIU campus in Columbia. Over 200 boarding and day students in grades seven through 12 enrolled at the new campus.

The elementary program was launched in 1990 when Ben Lippen Elementary School opened in the facilities of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo, South Carolina. In 1996, a second elementary school, Ben Lippen Northeast,

was opened using space at Spears Creek Baptist Church in Elgin, South Carolina. Currently, Ben Lippen Elementary School has two locations owned by the school—the Monticello Road Campus and the St. Andrews Road Campus.

Today Ben Lippen is comprised of more than 700 students. Families served by Ben Lippen represent over 116 local churches and 15 foreign countries. Ben Lippen continues its tradition to serve as a model of academic distinction. Graduates are accepted to some of the finest colleges and universities. The result is generation after generation of Ben Lippen alumni who build their lives on biblical values and contribute to society as doctors, lawyers, missionaries, pastors, business leaders, military personnel, husbands and wives, and dads and moms.

Our Distinctives • Ben Lippen is a Christian college and “calling” preparatory school. • One hundred percent of our graduates are accepted into college. • Our seniors (class of 2013) received over 3.8 million dollars in renewable scholarship monies. • Ben Lippen has produced 39 National Merit Scholars during the past 17 years. • As early as eighth grade, Ben Lippen students begin individual testing and guidance counseling related to aptitudes, interests, and abilities to prepare for their next steps after high school. • Nearly 60 percent of Ben Lippen full-time faculty have obtained or are working toward an advanced degree. • Twenty percent of Ben Lippen High School students are international boarding students who live on campus. This provides an enriching cross-cultural experience for both day and boarding students. • All Ben Lippen students in grades Pre-K through 12 participate in weekly chapel services. • A Ben Lippen student is engaged in active Bible study and discussion for approximately 180 hours per year.

Our Accreditations/Affiliations • Ben Lippen is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). • Ben Lippen is a member of the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA).

Our Logos

Green symbolizes life and the spiritual, academic, and social growth which we aspire for every student.

The Asheville campus was surrounded by trees. Trees also suggest the bearing of fruit which we desire for our graduates. The Columbia campus is also encircled by many trees.

Gold symbolizes the glory of God.

Ben Lippen began in 1940 in Asheville, NC. We moved to Columbia, SC in 1988.

This verse describes the life of victory upon which Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) and

Ben Lippen were founded.

The school originated on top of a mountain

in Asheville, NC and now resides at the

highest point in Columbia, SC. In fact, the word “Monticello”

(the street on which the campus is

located) means “little mountain.”

A reminder that we serve the King of Kings.

Candlelight Service – A special service held the evening before commencement for seniors, their families and friends, and faculty and staff, to share memories of their time at Ben Lippen. A reception follows the service.

Cedar Creek Classic – The Cedar Creek Classic is Columbia’s largest sporting clay event. This annual 14-station/100 bird shoot is hosted at the beautiful Cedar Ridge Farm in Blythewood, S.C., on the last Saturday in April. Proceeds benefit the Mountain of Trust Financial Aid Fund.

CIU – Columbia International University.

CIU Day – Faculty and staff from CIU, Ben Lippen School, 89.7 WMHK, and New Life 91.9 come together for a quasi- state-of-the-corporation address, information, and fellowship. School is not in session for this all-day event.

Commencement – Graduation ceremonies held at the end of May.

Eighth Grade Banquet – A year-end evening of celebration and remembrance for eighth graders and their parents. Eighth Grade Promotion – Each eighth grade student is publicly recognized for successfully completing their middle school course of study.

Eighth Grade Spiritual Life Challenge – An off-campus overnight retreat which includes team building activities, leadership and spiritual challenges, and fellowship.

Evening of Thanksgiving – An end-of-the-year celebration expressing appreciation to Ben Lippen’s praying, giving, and serving partners.

Extended Care – Ben Lippen Elementary School offers fee-based before and after school care for students in kindergarten through fifth grade on a regularly scheduled or drop-in basis.

FACTS – A national provider of tuition payment plans. All payments to Ben Lippen must be made through FACTS Tuition Management.

Fair Day – Ben Lippen dismisses early one day to allow students an opportunity to attend the South Carolina State Fair. This is a wonderful opportunity to socialize with other Ben Lippen families.

Father-Daughter Banquet – Held in February, this is a special evening for third – fifth grade girls and their fathers.

Father’s Prayer Breakfast – During the school year, fathers from all Ben Lippen campuses come together for prayer, food, and fellowship usually the first Saturday of the month.

Fifth Grade Promotion – Each fifth grade student is recognized for successfully completing their elementary course of study.

High School Awards Assembly – Academic awards, scholarships, and special recognitions are presented to high school students at this year-end assembly.

Junior/Senior Banquet – An annual social event, held in the spring, hosted by the junior class in honor of the seniors. It is held at an off-campus location and dress is formal. All juniors and seniors are required to attend this event.

LGI – The Large Group Instruction building is located adjacent to the gym.

Middle School Awards Ceremony – Teachers and staff present academic awards, scholarships, and special recognition to middle school students at the end of the school year.

Middle School Spiritual Life Challenge – An off-campus gathering for sixth and seventh graders that includes motivational speakers, spiritual growth, and fellowship.

Mom’s In Touch – Mom’s in Touch prayer groups seek to fulfill the mission of “impacting children and schools worldwide for Christ by gathering mothers to pray.”

MOTF – Mountain of Trust Fund promotes and supports the mission of Ben Lippen by raising resources to supplement tuition in order to meet operational and programming needs of the school. The MOTF committee is directed and energized by parents, fully supported by the administration, and works under the BLS Board of Directors and Partnering for Excellence Council.

MPR – The Multi-Purpose Room is located behind BLES-MR.

Parent Alert – Parent Alert is a text notification system which provides instantaneous communication to the school community, especially in cases of emergencies.

PfE – Partnering for Excellence is a year-round initiative of Ben Lippen to stimulate dynamic andgrowing praying, giving, and serving partnerships with parents, alumni, and friends.

PTF – The Parent Teacher Fellowship provides support for each campus through a myriad of volunteer opportunities such as fellowship, hospitality, and teacher appreciation.

Press Day – Press Day is the day Ben Lippen’s athletes and their parents gather for a mandatory SCISA sportsmanship meeting, and to receive important team and athletic department information. Team and individual pictures are also taken on this day. RenWeb – School management software that facilitates communication between BLS and school families, allowing easy online access to lesson plans, homework assignments, daily grades, and much more.

SAR – St. Andrews Road Elementary Campus.

SACS – Ben Lippen School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

SCISA – Ben Lippen is a member of the South Carolina Independent School Association, which establishes accreditation standards and coordinates athletic and academic competitions.

Senior Lunch – A special lunch held during graduation week at a location off campus.

Senior Invitation Day – A special day set aside in the spring in which the junior class presents the senior class with invitations to the Junior/Senior Banquet.

Senior Reading Day – A study day for seniors.

Senior Night – Senior athletes and band members are recognized during each of the sports seasons.

Senior Trip – A trip to Washington, DC during the spring semester.

Spirit Wear – Ben Lippen apparel, gear, and other merchandise designed to unleash your school spirit. A spirit shirt (student’s choice) can be worn on Fridays with jeans. This is the only day jeans are permitted.

Spirit Week – Takes place the week leading up to the Friday night homecoming game. Each campus plans a variety of fun activities and competitions.

Super Scoopers – Parents help scoop ice cream in the cafeteria for the middle school twice a week.

Tailgating – A Friday night tradition at the varsity football home games. BLS families come together to enjoy food and fellowship while tailgating around the perimeter of the football field.

Winter Social – A formal banquet for all high school students during the Christmas season.

Winterim – Provides a unique opportunity to develop Christian scholars through a variety of learning activities, which by design, teach lessons that go beyond the traditional BLS curriculum. Winterim days are counted as academic days on the school calendar and all students in grades 9-12 must participate in a Winterim course.

Family Christian BookstoresFor every $5 you or your friends spend at Family Christian Stores, you get a Ministry Builders stamp. With RenWeb you are able to: • Keep current with your student’s grades, homework, behavior, and attendance • Find contact information for other students, families, faculty, and staff • Keep your personal information updated (so we can keep in touch with you!)

High school students are also encouraged to keep their email address current in RenWeb. The guidance department communicates frequently through this mode.

Instructions for Accessing RenWebIn order to access RenWeb, the admissions department must have your current email address on file. Parents of day students, please contact kelly.adams@benlippen.com to confirm your email. Parents of boarding students contact debbie.austin@benlippen.com.

Step 1: Go to www.RenWeb.com. Step 2: Click the “ParentsWeb Login” button on left hand navigation. Step 3: Enter Ben Lippen’s school ID, which is bls-sc, and click “Submit.” Step 4: Enter the email address and password you have on file with the admissions department. Mountain of Trust: Tuition alone does not cover the cost of operating a private school. Parents, grandparents, alumni, businesses and individuals are encouraged to prayerfully consider making a tax deductible donation above and beyond tuition to the Mountain of Trust Fund which funds special projects as determined annually by the Mountain of Trust Fund Committee and provides financial assistance to many who otherwise could not afford a Christian education. How To Support Ben Lippen SchoolBen Lippen has two sources of income – tuition and tax-deductible gifts – and both are essential to fulfilling our mission of developing Christian scholars.

The Mountain of Trust Fund (MOTF) annually raises money to support ongoing and special projects of the school. Energized parents, in collaboration with Ben Lippen’s leadership, direct the MOTF. In Spring 2012, the MOTF announced the completion of Phase One of the Steve Caswell Athletic Center, which includes a new weight room and classroom. Phase Two of this project was completed in Spring 2013, and includes bleachers, renovated floors and lobby area, and new scorer’s table.

In addition to this and other initiatives of the MOTF, raising $200,000 for financial assistance is a key distinctive of our school. Cedar Creek Classic, a 14-station/100 bird sporting clays event, is a Ben Lippen School annual fundraising event held the last Saturday in April. It is the largest such event in the Midlands. Proceeds from Cedar Creek Classic are earmarked for the Mountain of Trust Financial Aid Fund. Every family is encouraged to get involved as a participant, sponsor, planning committee member, or event day volunteer.

Tax-deductible gifts may be made online at www.BenLippen.com or mailed to the school. While cash, checks, and credit card gifts are most common, more gifting options exist such as electronic funds transfer (EFT), stock gifts, and other appreciated assets.

Campus Wear GuidelinesBen Lippen School’s campus wear helps to create a sense of unity and promote an excellent academic environment. Below you will find general information that applies specifically to the dress code for the upcoming school year. Dress code details for each campus can be found in the campus-specific2013-2014 Student Life Handbooks.

Daily campus wear for boys and girls, Pre-K through 12th grade, can be found at the Ben Lippen website – www.BenLippen.com.

• Tops - All shirts, tops, and blouses must be purchased from Lands’ End. • Bottoms - All pants, shorts, and skirts must be purchased from Lands’ End. • Jumpers - All jumpers must be purchased from Lands’ End. • Outerwear - All outerwear worn in the classroom (i.e. jackets, hoodies, sweatshirts, sweaters) must be purchased from Lands’ End and must have the school logo. The guidelines regarding outerwear vary for each campus. Please refer to individual handbooks for details. • Heavy Coats - Outerwear that is not worn in the classroom, but is appropriate for wearing on cold days between buildings, does not have to have the school logo. These items may be purchased from any store. If, however, the coat will be worn in the classroom, it must be purchased from Lands’ End and have the school logo.

Additional items which do not have to be purchased from Lands’ End:

• Belts - When a belt is appropriate, it should be black, brown, or coordinated with the color of the shirt being worn. • Socks - Socks should be coordinated with the color of shirt or pants being worn by the student. • Shoes - Appropriate shoes that are clean and in good repair should be worn. Beach-style or bathroom flip-flops are not permitted.

FAQs

1. Will students be allowed to wear jeans on Fridays? Yes, students (Pre-K - 12) will be allowed to wear jeans on Fridays if they are also wearing a spirit shirt. This includes spirit shirts that can be ordered from the Ben Lippen Spirit Shop and other spirit shirts promoted by athletics, clubs, fine arts, etc.

2. Will students dress differently on chapel days? No, students will dress in approved campus wear on chapel day.

3. Will non-Lands’ End clothing (pants, skirts, tops, etc.) be allowed? No, all clothing other than those items mentioned (shoes, socks, belts, heavy coats) are to be Lands’ End clothing.

4. Must shirts worn under campus wear tops be purchased at Lands’ End? (These shirts would not display the school logo, but would be worn under a campus wear shirt.) No, shirts worn under an approved campus wear shirt displaying the school logo do not have to be purchased at Lands’ End. Those shirts, however, must be one color and follow the same color scheme as other approved campus wear shirts, (i.e. green, gold/yellow, gray, black, or white).

5. Will students be allowed to wear “old tops” with the old school logo and embroidery? Yes and No - a. No, students must wear the current school logo on Monday through Thursday. b. Yes, students may wear old school logo shirts on Fridays as their spirit shirt if they choose to do so. 6. Where is campus wear required - just on campus or at other school activities? Campus wear is required for school day activities. When students arrive for school in the morning they should be dressed in appropriate campus wear. Campus wear is required while they are on the campus, unless they are involved in activities which have other approved dress (i.e. athletics, school activities, etc.). Dress for special occasions such as field trips, or when students participate in sports activities, will be announced for those occasions by teachers and coaches. Campus wear is not required for students attending after-school functions such as ball games, concerts, programs, etc. Specific guidelines for those activities are included in the student handbook.

7. Are there specific policies for each campus? Yes, please review your campus handbook for more details and expectations for each campus/grade level.

How to OrderThe link to the Lands’ End campus wear website is found at www.BenLippen.com (under the Parents tab). This is not to be confused with the Spirit Store. Should you need it, the Ben Lippen school dress code number issued by Lands’ End is 900133596.

Lands’ End highly recommends that you contact a customer service representative when placing your first order or if you encounter any problems; the representative will walk you through the steps and guide you to the sections containing approved BLS campus wear. The customer service number is 1-800-469-2222. Items may be returned to your local Sears store.
