Department of Athletics Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Lincoln University shall be to provide National Collegiate Athlet-ics Association (NCAA) Division II programs for men and women that are equally characterized by excellence. The primary phi-losophy of the Department of Athletics is that our staff and pro-gram develop and hold the concept of the student-athlete at the highest level of significance. This important standard must be encouraged and supported and never compromised, thus emphasizing to the student-athlete the importance of not only obtaining a degree, but also in reaching full academic and ath-letic potential.

The Intercollegiate Athletic program shall reflect due regard for the athletic traditions of Lincoln University, as well as future promise. The program shall fall within Lincoln’s abilities to pro-vide appropriate facilities, along with the location, allows Lin-coln to schedule conveniently and competitively and fall within financial capabilities of Lincoln University to fund adequately. The goal of the Department of Athletics is consistent with the core mission of the university: to provide excellent educational opportunities for a diverse student population. Our student-athletes will be viewed as students first, and only then as ath-letes. The department will focus on producing graduates who are successful, well-rounded and prepared to make positive contributions to society.

Academic achievement in the classroom, together with the development of character, individual and team skills, the will to win and a sense of fair play and sportsmanship in athletic competition determines distinction in intercollegiate athletics programs. Such distinction is a source of pride and enthusiasm for Lincoln University, among its constituent groups including students, faculty and staff, alumni, community and friends at all levels of interest.

The Department of Athletics will strive to be a leader in areas of ethics, non-discrimination, diversity and authentic fiscal integrity throughout the Lincoln University campus, the state of Missouri and the country. At the same time, student-athletes must be given the greatest opportunity possible to strive for the highest athletic standards through the best preparation, motivation and support.

Jason Hall was originally built in 1958. Over the years, an addition was made to the front of the build-ing, along with several other minor renovations. The first phase of the Jason Hall renovation took place with an installation of a new HVAC system, a new basketball court and bleacher system. In 2008, the second phase addressed safety issues within the building, such as updating the sprinkler system. The Physical Education department received a new of-fice complex, complete with private offices and a conference room. New audio/visual equipment was also installed in the PE classrooms. The coaches' offices were also renovated to allow for more privacy. The locker rooms were completely redone and a new weight room with state-of-the-art equipment was constructed. The restrooms, ticket booth and concessions area were also remodeled. Finally, a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed in the gym to allow fans the chance to see up-to-the-second player points and other stats.

John Redmond returns in 2013-14 for his fifth year as the head men’s basketball coach at Lincoln University. It’s also his seventh year with the program, as he served as an assistant coach at LU from 2007-2009.

Since becoming the head coach at Lincoln, Redmond has led the Blue Tigers’ transition from the Heartland Conference to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, and has since coached two players that have earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors in Pierre DeClue (2010-11) and Cedric Ridle (2011-12). Last season, Ridle was named to the All-MIAA second team after leading the league in scoring with 21.0 points per game.

He enters the 2012-13 season with a 15-92 record as a head coach at the NCAA level and an 89-123 overall mark as a college head coach. His players have also excelled academically, as every senior player he has coached at Lincoln has graduated.

Redmond came to Lincoln after a very successful run as the head coach at NAIA school Arkansas Baptist, where he also served as the program’s athletic director. Redmond coached there from 2003-06, compiling an overall record of 74-31. During his time there, his teams finished third and fifth in the nation in NAIA Division I for the 2004 and 2006 seasons, respectively.

Before coaching at Arkansas Baptist, Redmond was an assistant on head coach Jim Seward’s staff at Central Oklahoma from 1989-93, where he helped lead the Bronchos to three straight Lone Star Con-ference Championships (1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93). UCO won at least 23 games in each of those seasons, qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament in both 1992 and 1993 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the tourney in 1992.

In 2006, Redmond returned to the NCAA by becoming the assistant mens basketball coach at Lemoyne-Owen College, a Division II program in Memphis. He left there in 2007 when he was invited to join the Lincoln University Mens Basketball program as the assistant coach, and ultimately was elevated to the post of head coach in 2009.

Redmond received an Associate of Arts in Health from North-eastern Community College in 1974 and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Wayne State College of Nebraska in 1976. Coach Redmond also earned his Masters of Education in Health and Physical Education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1992.

A decorated college athlete, Redmond earned four All-Ameri-can and four Nebraska All-State first team awards as a player. He was also named to the Who’s Who Among Outstanding College Athletes list for his performance during the 1974-75 season.

SpencerWilliams

Assistant Coach3rd Season at LU

Spencer Williams enters his third season as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Lincoln. In his first season with Lincoln, Williams helped coach the Blue Tigers to a season sweep over Missouri Western. In 2012-13, the Blue Tigers defeated then-MIAA leader, and eventual league runner-up, Northwest Missouri on the road, 70-65.

Williams is no stranger to the MIAA, having played at Missouri Southern from 1990-92, averaging 7.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in that time. He is also a former assistant with MSSU, helping to coach the Lions from 2002-05.

As a player, Williams started his collegiate career at Indian Hills Commu-nity College, playing from 1986-1988. During his sophomore year, he led his team in scoring with 24 ppg, and also dished out six assists per con-test. He was an all-conference and all-region honoree and was named an honorable mention All-American.

Williams initially broke into coaching at the high school level, taking over as head junior varsity boys’ coach and assistant varsity coach at McAu-ley High in Joplin, Mo. in 1994. He then moved to Tulsa, Okla., where he served as an assistant coach for the Tulsa Select girls AAU basketball team in 1998. From 1999-01, he served as head coach for the Tulsa Blues boys AAU basketball team, before returning to Jolpin in 2002 to serve as assis-tant men’s basketball coach at his alma mater.

After leaving Missouri Southern, Williams became the associate head men’s basketball coach at Lane College from 2005-07. He then moved back to Memphis and became the head coach of the Memphis Blues, an affiliate of the World Basketball Association, in 2008 and 2009. Before coming to Lincoln, Williams served as an assistant coach at Kirby High in Memphis, Tenn. from 2009-11.

Williams received his Associates of Science in Law Enforcement and Bach-elor of Science in Criminal Justice from MSSU in December 1992. He cur-rently resides in Holts Summit, Mo., and has three children, Trey, DeShon (a freshman with the Blue Tigers) and Jeremiah.

Harold Robertson, one of the greatest players in the history of the Lin-coln University men’s basketball program, was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame on June 6, 2013. Robertson, who led NCAA Division II in scoring with an MIAA record 34.5 points per game during the 1977-78 season, became the first Lincoln athlete to be inducted into the league’s hall of fame.

The MIAA’s Most Valuable Player and an Associated Press Little All-

American first team selection in 1977-78, Robertson led Lincoln to four NCAA Division II Regional appearances, two league regular season cham-pionships and one tournament crown during his time as a Blue Tiger. Robertson scored 2,551 points during his Lincoln career, the second-most by any player in MIAA history.

In that special 1977-78 campaign, Robertson led Lincoln to a 22-6

record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. He scored 965 points, which still stands as the MIAA’s single season record, en route to earning All-American recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Street & Smith magazine and Basketball Weekly magazine. Robertson was also selected to the NCAA Division II Regional All-Tournament team and he was invited to play in the NABC

Collegiate All-Star Game. A three-time All-MIAA first team selection and two-time league MVP, Robertson set three other marks that, to

this day, are still conference records. On Jan. 11, 1978, Robertson scored an MIAA single game record 59 points against Arkansas-Little Rock. He also owns the league’s career (1,116) and single season (408) records for field goals made. Making these accomplishments all the more impressive is the fact that Robertson played in an era where there was no shot clock or three-point line.

Robertson, who twice earned NABC All-District V honors and was a two-time selection to the MIAA’s All-Tour-

nament team, was selected in the fourth round of the 1978 National Basketball Association draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. The MIAA Hall of Fame will become the second Hall to induct Robertson, as he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 for his play at Lincoln.

The 2013 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on June 6, 2013 at the Kansas City Public Library in

Kansas City, Mo. Joining Robertson in the hall were Gene Bartow (Central Missouri), Janet Clark (Northwest Mis-souri), Mark Curp (Central Missouri), Dr. Peggy Martin (Central Missouri), Sherri Reeves (Northwest Missouri), Tom Smith (Central Missouri & Missouri Western), Warren Turner (Missouri Southern), Ronnie West (Pittsburg State) and league basketball official Bill Westbrooks. Also chosen for induction were the 2003 Central Missouri baseball team, the 2004-05 Washburn women's basketball team and the 2009 Northwest Missouri football team, each of which won national championships.

Dr. Kevin D. Rome, Sr. earned the Bachelor of Art degree in English from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1989. He received the Master of Education in College Student Personnel with an emphasis in counseling from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, in 1991, and the Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas in 2001.

Dr. Rome’s career has been concentrated in higher education, begin-ning at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia, where he served as the Upward Bound Residence Hall Supervisor in the summer of 1989. While there he led a staff of four tutor counselors, coordinated recreation programs and field trips and coordinated the program’s food service.

From 1989 to 1991, he served as a residence director, Greek advisor and also as a financial aid counselor at the University of Georgia, while pursuing his graduate degree. In 1991, Dr. Rome joined the staff of Cali-fornia Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California as the Coordinator of Student Development. In this position, he was responsi-ble for the administration coordination and program sponsorship of two residential facilities, housing 434 men and women. He coordinated the curriculum and taught Psychology 251, a course for resident advisors.

In 1992, he was promoted to the position of Academic Development Specialist, in which was responsible for the academic, leadership development and outreach programs of the university’s on-campus residents. In this position he coordinated, developed and supervised the First-Year Expe-rience, Multicultural, Living Learning, Returning/Transfer and Faculty Fellows programs. Dr. Rome was once again promoted at Cal Poly in 1994, when he was named the Education and Training Specialist, a position he would hold for two years.

He was named Assistant Dean of Students in the area of new student services in 1996 at the University of Texas at Austin. In his position, Dr. Rome coordinated the programs and services for new students and their parents. Betty Kemna - Athletic Director Betty Kemna became Lincoln’s Director of Athletics on July 1, 2009, after serving

as Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance for four years. She has implemented several internal changes within the athletics program since being appointed to the position. A corporate sponsorship program has been developed and implemented, along with the Blue Tiger Club booster program and the Blue Tiger Kids' Club.

Kemna is no stranger to Lincoln University, as her first position on campus was Head Softball Coach/Concession Coordinator when she was hired in 1997. In 1999, she took on additional duties as Senior Women’s Administrator within the athletic department. In 2003, she took over as NCAA Compliance Coordinator. Under her direction the compliance department took the institution through a five-year probation period that Lincoln was on for violations prior to her appoint-ment. In 2005, she was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. During the 2007-2008 academic year she served as Interim Athletic Director, while still conducting her duties as Assistant AD for Compliance.

Kemna is a 1996 graduate of Lincoln University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education. She earned a master's in education from William Woods University in 2006.

Kemna and her husband, Scott, have three children, Bradley, Erin and Cole.

Over the past decade, few teams in any sport have achieved the level of success enjoyed by the Lincoln women’s track & field team. Winners of 10 national championships in that span, including five-straight NCAA Division II outdoor titles from 2003-2007, the Blue Tigers were hon-ored for their accomplishments in 2013 by being inducted into the Mis-souri Sports Hall of Fame. Lincoln has established itself as one of the top track & field programs in all of NCAA Division II, having finished in the top three at every championship meet over the last four years. That includes a special 2012 season in which both the Lincoln men and women finished as the national runners-up at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Champion-ships. Since the 2002-2003 athletic year, members of the Lincoln track & field program have earned more than 500 All-American honors by scoring points at NCAA Championship meets.

Lincoln University’s success has not been limited to just its women’s track & field team, however, as 10 of LU’s 13 athletic programs

have participated in postseason competition in the past two years alone. Twishana Williams, a member of the Lincoln women’s cross country team, was the MIAA’s only All-American in that sport in 2012; the men’s golf team took home the 2013 Division II PGA National Minority Collegiate Championship; the LU women’s golf team has posted fifth and sixth-place finishes in that same tournament over the past two years; and Lincoln’s women’s basketball, softball and tennis teams each have competed in the MIAA tournament in the past two seasons, with the women’s basketball team falling just eight points short of playing in the league championship game in 2012.

A Tradition of Success

Lincoln UniversityHistory of Lincoln UniversityAt the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution in Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school:

1. The institution shall be designed for the special benefit of the freed African-Americans;2. It shall be located in the state of Missouri;3. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor.

Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000; this was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was for-mally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named first principal of Lincoln Institute. On Septem-ber 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City.

In 1869, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus, and in 1870 it began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln gradu-ates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the fol-lowing year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum.

In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln Univer-sity and created a Board of Curators to govern the University.

The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942.

In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, and Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.
