PublicationsNZNO has released the following new publications:-

Education Policy Framework The NZNO education policy framework identifies key strategies to guide the oranisation’s direction in advancing the vision up to and beyond 2020. http://www.nzno.org.nz/Portals/0/publications/Education%20Policy%20Framework%202013.pdf

Nurses in acute care settings Nurses provide a continuous 24 hour seven-days-a-week patient care and surveillance system in acute care settings and are in the best position to initiate actions that minimise adverse events and outcomes for patients. http://www.nzno.org.nz/Portals/0/publications/Nurses%20in%20acute%20care%20settings3.pdf

Nurses in senior nursing and leadership positions Nurses hold a range of senior and leadership positions throughout the health sector. This includes (although not an exhaustive list) clinical nurse educators, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse managers and directors of nursing. Nurses in such positions have a significant influence on working environment, resource management and advocacy, adverse event prevention, nurse retention and job satisfaction of nurses. Nurses employed and retained in senior positions can lead to significant long-term cost savings for organisations. http://www.nzno.org.nz/Portals/0/publications/Nurses%20in%20Senior%20Nursing%20and%20leadership%20positions2.pdf

Nurses working with children and infants New Zealand’s children experience some of the worst health outcomes of any children in the western world. Compared with 30 Organisation for Economic Development (OECD) countries, our children sit second to last for health and safety, and low in other important rankings such as material well-being and risk behaviours.. Our children also experience disparities in health – Māori and Pacific children are up to 23 times more likely to suffer from rheumatic fever than other children, and children in more socially and economically deprived situations are more likely to die from Sudden Unexplained Death of an Infant (SUDI – also known as cot death). http://www.nzno.org.nz/Portals/0/publications/Nurses%20working%20with%20children%20and%20infants.pdf

The value of working with the political process The broad health policies set by government, such as the primary health care (PHC) strategy, the ‘shorter stays in emergency departments’, and policies in other areas that affect health, such as minimum wage and child poverty policies, can have wide-ranging effects on the practice of nurses and health workers. Yet these groups often have little say in the development of such policies. Why is this? What value is there for nurses and health workers in engaging in the political process and what can be achieved if they do? This paper provides answers to these questions and the evidence behind why nurses must engage.http://www.nzno.org.nz/Portals/0/publications/The%20value%20of%20engaging%20in%20the%20political%20process,%2020139.pdf

Heart Foundation Online e-learningThe Heart Foundation has recently released an online e-Learning course to support health professionals to help successfully design and deliver CV risk assessment and management service.

The programme is on the Ministry of Health’s LearnOnline website and is called Improve Heart Health – CV Risk Assessment and Management. You can view the course here http://learnonline.health.nz/local/program/view.php?id=2 You will need to register to work through the course, but it is free and takes just a few moments.

The e-Learning programme is a great resource that has been developed with practitioner input over two years. We’ve had over 350 (mostly practice nurses) sign up and work through the course already, with some excellent feedback.

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) has recently endorsed the e-Learning course and has been approved for 1 credit per hour up to a maximum of 3.75 for all e courses CME for General Practice Educational Programme Stage 2 (GPEP2) and Maintenance of Professional Standards (MOPS) purposes.
