The Homeof the Razorbacks

George M. Billingsley Tennis Center

The George M. Billingsley Tennis Center has been the outdoor home of Razorback men’s tennis since its renovation in 2008. The $2.8 million expansion and renovation gives the Razorback men’s and women’s tennis teams a complete facility combining the outdoor courts of the Billingsley Center with the indoor courts of the Dills Indoor Stadium. The outdoor facility includes bleacher seating between the two sets of five courts. Fans can sit in the bleachers and watch matches on either side, or stand on top and view matches on both sides. The renovation includes locker rooms, offices and an indoor club area attached to the Dills Indoor Stadium and connecting the indoor facility with the outdoor facility. The club area includes chair back seats on one side overlooking the Dills Indoor Courts and chair back seats on the other overlooking the Billingsley Center outdoor courts. Other additions include scoreboards for the individual courts and a larger scoreboard on the west end of the north set of outdoor courts which will display the scores from outdoor courts one through six. Unlike many other programs across the country, Arkansas’ tennis teams take advantage of facil-ities which give them the opportunity to play and practice 365 days a year, regardless of the weather.

Dills Indoor Tennis Courts

The Razorbacks have a proud tradition of providing the best athletic facilities the world can offer, and the Dills Indoor Tennis Courts is no exception. Constructed in 1982, the structure was originally known as the University of Arkansas Track and Tennis Complex. In 2002, the facility was renamed the Dills Indoor Tennis Center and dedicated solely to the netted sport, offering the latest to competitive collegiate tennis athletes of today. The center was renamed and dedicated on April 30, 2002, in honor of Jane Dills Morgan and Nancy Dills Lee, along with Ewell Lee, who made a sizeable donation in the name of Robert “Bob” and Lucile Dills. They were early and long-time supporters of the Razorback program. The center originally included just four courts, but the renovations upped that number to six. Other improvements included a new ceiling and insulation system, 96 new lamps, resurfacing of all the courts and 12 electronic scoreboards that hang from the ceiling. When the building was rededicated, massive internal renovations were made to the com-plex to provide one of the best facilities in the country. With six courts, the indoor complex proved to be ideal when the somtimes cold, unpredictable weather of Northwest Arkansas pre-vented matches from being played outside. The speedy courts were just resurfaced this year. The stadium seating of the Dills Indoor Tennis Center puts even the most die-hard ten-nis enthusiast at ease. With 500+ chair back seats and standing capacity for 200+ more, the Dills Indoor Tennis Center is one of the largest in the country. Large heaters and an insulated ceiling provide a warm environment in even the coldest of winters, allowing athletes to improve their skills all 12 months of the year. The indoor center includes locker rooms for women’s and men’s programs, coaches’ offices and lobby. Prior to the most recent SEC Championship events -- the men in 2008 and the women in 2009, the facility hosted the men’s in 1994 and women’s in 1997.

Michael HegartyHead Coach8th SeasonAuburn, '94

In seven seasons as Arkansas’ head coach, Michael Hegarty has returned the Razorbacks to national prominence with two Southeastern Con-ference Western Division championships and four trips to the NCAA Tournament, including each of the last three years. Under Hegarty, Arkansas improved from an 8-13 finish his first year in 2004 to 11-11 in 2005 to a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The school’s first ever SEC Western Division titles fol-lowed in 2008 and 2009. The ‘08 club advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament while the ‘09 team reached the Round of 16. Last year’s team, despite replacing three players in his singles lineup from the 2009 team, finished 18-10, ranked No. 22 in the nation and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tour-nament. The Razorbacks had wins over No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 23 Washington, No. 27 TCU, No. 32 Tulsa and No. 35 Oklahoma. Hegarty was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. In 2009, the Razorbacks were 15-8 and won the SEC West at 8-4. Arkansas beat Oral Roberts and No. 28 TCU in the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 3 Duke, 4-2. During the regular sea-son, Hegarty’s team posted wins over No. 13 Ken-tucky, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 16 Florida and No. 22 LSU. Hegarty was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2008 after going 18-10, winning the SEC West at 9-2 and guiding the Razorbacks to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Also the ITA Central Re-gion Coach of the Year, Arkansas beat No. 46 Wake Forest, No. 14 North Carolina and No. 2 Georgia in the post-season before losing to No. 7 UCLA. Dur-ing the regular season, Arkansas posted wins over No. 6 Georgia, No. 15 Kentucky and No. 20 Ten-nessee. Under Hegarty’s tutelage, the Razorbacks have accumulated many individual honors.

Aurelija Miseviciute won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championship title in 2007. Consistently ranked in the top three in the country, Miseviciute repeated as ITA National Indoor Champion in 2008. Arkansas’ most decorated women’s tennis player, Miseviciute, with the help of Hegarty, won an astounding 126 singles matches in her career, earned two All-America and three All-SEC honors, and was a finalist for the Honda Award in 2008 and 2009. Most recently, Anouk Tigu was voted the ITA Central Region Player to Watch in the spring of 2010, and she validated the attention by winning the ITA Central Region championship in the fall of the 2010 season. Also in 2010, Kelsey Sundaram was named the ITA Rookie Player of the Year. Tigu, who was ranked No. 29 in the nation was first-team All-SEC while Sundaram made the all-fresh-man team.

Last season, Hegarty, again, finished his team at the top of the conference, earn-ing a second place finish in the Western Divi-sion and No. 24 national ranking. Tigu, was also named to her third straight All-SEC team and was a first team honoree for the second straight year. Hegarty’s success has been so prevalent over the past five years that his teams have been ranked in the preseason top-25 for five s

traight season, including the 2012 spring sea-son. Another honoree is Ela Kaluder, who was named the 2007 ITA Player to Watch, an honor that proved prophetic in 2009 when Kaluder was named the ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year. She also earned first-team All-SEC honors in 2007 and 2008. Not content for his players to succeed only on the court, Hegarty has instilled a strong academic work ethic into his players, believing tennis should go hand-in-hand with a college education. Leading the way in the classroom was Miseviciute, who was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and an ESPN The Maga-zine Academic All-American in both 2008 and 2009. Since 2004, Hegarty’s Razorbacks have been named to the SEC Honor Roll a total of 30 times. After a successful college and profession-al career, Hegarty began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Auburn University, in 1994. After two seasons with the Tigers, Hegarty took his first job at Arkan-sas, assistant coach of the men’s tennis team under current men’s head coach Robert Cox for a year before taking an assistant coaching position with the Kentucky Wildcats men and women’s programs.

Hegarty took his first head coaching job at Fresno State in 1997 where he took the west coast by storm. The Bulldogs spent threeseasons in the Top 25 with Hegarty and were crowned Western Athletic Conference champi-ons in 1999. For this, Hegarty was named WAC and Region VII Coach of the Year. Before returning to Arkansas, Hegarty served as an assistant coach for the University of Florida men’s tennis team from 2001-2003, helping transform Florida men’s tennis into a national powerhouse. For his work with the Gators, Hegarty was named the ITA Southeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. While playing at Auburn, Hegarty broke the Top 20 in singles in both 1992 and 1993. He was named a two-time academic All-SEC honoree and graduated with a degree in jour-nalism. After graduating and entering the pro circuit, Hegarty was ranked as high as 284th in the world and competed in several world-renowned tournaments including the 1994 US Open, the Australian Open and the NASDAQ Open. Hegarty and his wife, Mary McDonald, currently reside in Fayetteville with their two children, Theo and Riley.

Kate LukomskayaSenior

5-8Minsk, Belarus (School Number 51)

AS A JUNIOR (2010-11): The native of Belarus notched 12 wins total for Razorbacks in singles, includ-ing two conference wins against players from Auburn and Mississippi State. She also helped Arkansas to their NCAA Tournament first round win against Sacramento State as she defeated Clarisse Baca in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Lukomskaya had a great year in doubles as well, scoring 17 wins combined with teammates, Valentina Starkova, Kelsey Sundaram and Stephanie Roy. The majority of her doubles matches came with Roy during the spring season, where the team went 13-10 and had eight wins in conference play. All but one of their matches came at the No. 2 position, which was their position for those 13 wins.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2009-10): Lukomskaya entered the 2009 fall season as one of three returning Ra-zorbacks and was impressive with an 11-4 record in singles. The highlight of the fall was advancing to the finals at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships. Unseeded entering the tournament, Lu-komskaya advance through the semifinals and quaterfinals before facing Oklahoma’s Ana-Maria Con-stantinescu in the finals. Lukomskaya battled but lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. She also won her flight at the Razorback Classic. In doubles, Lukomskaya paired with freshman Kelsey Sundaram and advanced to the doubles semifinal at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships. As the spring began, Lukom-skaya was clearly one of the top players on the team, as she played the majority of her time at the No. 2 spot in singles with a 12-10 overall record and 9-9 at the No. 2 position. Lukomskaya’s great play was recognized toward the end of the season as she became ranked for the first time in her Razorback career in singles after defeating No. 58 Maria Sorbello of Tennessee, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. Her highest ranking of the season came at No. 115. In doubles, Lukomskaya was part of a great team again with Sundaram, go-ing a combined 16-9 in dual matches and 6-4 in the SEC, good for tops on the team. Together, the duo won five of their last eight matches of the season, including one in the NCAA Tournament against Oklahoma.

AS A FRESHMAN (2008-09): In her first season with the Razorbacks, Kate Lukomskaya proved her worth, posting a 20-6 record and winning 10 dual matches, all at the No. 6 singles position. In dou-bles, Lukomskaya spent most of the season in the No. 3 slot with fellow freshman Emily Carbone. The two won 15 matches during the season, 11 in dual play, during the season, clinching doubles points against Tulsa, Mississippi State, Mississippi and LSU.

Stephanie RoySenior

5-5Montreal, Canada (Regina Assumpta)

AS A JUNIOR (2010-11): During her second full spring season, Roy was, once again, a major part in the Razorbacks run to the NCAA Tournament. Splitting time in between the No. 2-No. 5 positions, Roy tallied a 22-15 overall record and claimed 16 dual match victories. Her 22 wins were good for third on the team. She saw her best numbers at the No. 5 spot where she went a perfect 7-0. At one point in the spring, Roy won six straight matches, including a ranked win over No. 106 Jennifer Kellner of Notre Dame to help the Hogs upset 4th-ranked Notre Dame. The Montreal native went on to earn two more ranked wins during the year. In doubles, Roy caught her stride when she was paired up with teammate Kate Lukomskaya. The two totaled a 13-10 overall record, but won eight matches in conference play. The team played all but one match at the No. 2 spot and helped the Razorbacks earn a win at the ITA National Indoor Championships over No. 18 Washington with an 8-5 victory over Adrijana Pavlovic and Samantha Smith.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2009-10): Although she did not play in the fall, Roy was a major contibutor during the team’s spring season. Playing the majority of the season at the number four spot, Roy posted a 17-9 record throughout the spring and a 6-4 conference record. One of Roy’s standout victories came only in the seventh match of her Razorback career, when she helped her team clinch a 4-3 victory over Tulsa with a win over Anastasia Erofeeva in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. At the beginning of conference play, Roy won four of her first five matches against players from South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M. In doubles, Roy was just as much of a mainstay as she and teammate, Valentina Starkova racked up a 9-8 record overall throughout the dual season.

AS A FRESHMAN (2008-09): A mid-term enrollee at Arkan-sas, Stephanie Roy sat out the 2009 spring season, but prac-ticed and trained with the Razorbacks.

BEFORE ARKANSAS: Stephanie Roy joins the Razorback women’s tennis team after an impressive junior career in Can-

ada. Since beginning international competition, Roy has never been ranked lower than seventh among Canada’s elite. Roy was a finalist at the 2008 Canadian University and College National Championships. An outstanding doubles player as well, as a 16 year-old, partnered with American Alexandra McGoodwin to go all the way from the qualifying to the finals of the 2006 Evansville (IN) Open on her way to a 853 WTA doubles ranking. A native of Quebec, she attended Regina Assumpta prior to enrolling at Arkansas.

PERSONAL: Roy was born in Motreal, Canada to Sylvian Roy and Viviane Lussier on Aug. 2, 1990. She has an older brother, Nicolas, and chose Arkansas because of the great chemistry she felt with the players and coaching staff.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2010-11): The native of Ecuador built on her strong freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign. Stepping up her majority of playing time at the top three posi-tions, Paulson went 22-10 overall in singles, the fourth highest total on the team, tying her with Stephanie Roy. In dual play, Paulson was very efficient, going 16-8 with six wins coming from the conference slate. She also earned SEC Player of the Week honors in early February after helping the Razorbacks earn a berth in the ITA Indoor National Team Championships with an upset win over No. 4 Notre Dame. In that match, Paulson defeated No. 79 Kristen Rafael in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Over the course of the spring, Paulson went 2-3 against ranked oppoenents. In doubles, she teamed up with Anouk Tigu for the second straight year and went 27-12 overall and 19-10 in dual play. The two also tallied an amazing conference record as they went 8-3. The duo was even better in the post-season as they earned wins against Auburn in the first round of the SEC Tournament and a ranked win against the No. 10 doubles team in the nation in Chelsey Gullickson and Kate Fuller of Georgia. That match ended 8-6 in favor of the Razorbacks. Tigu and Paulson spent the majority of the season ranked in the top-40 in the nation, getting as high as No. 14, which is where they ended the year. The team also played so well that they advanced to the doubles competition of the NCAA Tourna-ment in Stanford, Calif. They won their first-round matchup against Iowa’s Molnar and Young, who were 35th in the nation, but unfortunately fell in the second round to Florida’s No. 2 team of Alex Cercone and Allie Will, 6-2, 6-3.

AS A FRESHMAN (2009-2010): Paulson entered the fall season as an experienced junior tennis player. Despite earning five singles wins, Paulson made her biggest im-mediate impact in doubles. Paulson paired with junior Anouk Tigu and the two posted a stellar 8-2 record. The duo was the No. 1 seed at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championship and advanced to the finals, which they lost to the Oklahoma top duo of Ana-Maria Constantien-scu and Teona Tsertsvadze. In the spring, Paulson con-tinued her strong freshman campaign, generating a 13-6 record overall and 5-4 in SEC play. The majority of her play came at the No. 6 spot as she compiled a 10-3 record at that spot alone. Midway through the spring, Paulson was awarded the SEC Freshman of the Week award after winning in straight sets over Gabby Rangel of Ole Miss, 7-6(6), 6-0, and Danielle Terpko of Mississippi State, 6-1, 6-1, catapulting her team to wins over both teams. In doubles, Paulson was a part of the frequently ranked team of her and Tigu. Together, they racked up a 8-6 re-cord in the spring alone, all coming at the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo ended the season ranked 64th in ITA doubles rankings.

PRIOR TO ARKANSAS: Paulson was a constant figure on the junior International Tennis Federation circuit, including working her way to a No. 85 ranking in July 2007. Paulson represented her country four times in Federation Cup play, going undefeated (4-0) in doubles and clinching the team victory over Bermuda with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Ashley Brooks. Lost 12-10 in a tiebreaker against future 2009 NCAA individual champion Mallory Cecil (Duke) at the 2007 Nicholas Machivello Cup. Paulson was both the singles and doubles champion at the 2006 Copa de las Naciones Amigas and she won the 2006 doubles titles at the Peru Junior Open and the Guayaquil Ecuador ITF Championship.

PERSONAL: Born on March 10, 1990 to Guillermo Paulson and Chilo Crespo, Paulson began playing tennis at the age of six. A native of Guayaquil, Ecuador, she has a passion for cooking and would love to open a restaurant one day. She chose Arkansas because she loved every minute of being here on her visit.

2012 PREVIEW With four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament in their back pockets, the 2012 ver-sion of the Razorback women’s tennis team has its goals set for five in a row and beyond. Head coach Michael Hegarty returns four players from a year ago, three of them seniors. Of those players, all four earned double-digit singles wins in the 2011 spring and three earned at least 20 wins. With a lineup full of experience, the 2011 club went 18-10 overall, 6-5 in the Southeastern Conference. Their performance earned them the opportunity to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament at the Billingsley Tennis Cen-ter, where they advanced to the second round with a 4-1 win over 47th-ranked Sacramento State. The Razorbacks ended the year ranked No. 22 in the country, and had wins over 13 ranked opponents. Hegarty and the Razorbacks were able to continue with the same performance they have had over the recent years as one of the top teams in the SEC. Emily Carbone and Kate Lukomskaya are the only two players from the Razorback team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2009 and have played in the NCAA Tournament each year since then. Having that senior leadership, along with Stephanie Roy, who transferred in during her freshman year and is now a senior, the Razorbacks should be able to stay in the top-25 and continue to be competitive in the SEC.

A year ago, Carbone finished second on the team in singles wins only to Tigu with 25 overall. The majority of her wins came from the No. 5 posi-tion as she will help give the middle of the lineup some firepower during the 2012 spring. Lukomskaya, returns to the club for her se-nior season as she has won 39 singles matches over the last two seasons. The native of Belarus has been a top of the lineup player for Hegarty over the last couple of years and she will most likely continue that trend this season. Rounding out the seniors, Roy, out of Montreal, Canada, had her best season as a Razor-back in 2011. Winning 22 singles matches and 19 doubles matches, she became a fixture at the Nos. 2-4 positions after going 7-0 at the No. 5 spot. With only two full seasons under her belt at Ar-kansas, Roy will no doubt look to finish her colle-giate career on a high note and play for her second straight 20-win season. Claudine Paulson is the lone returning player that is not a senior this season, but after a stellar sophomore campaign, she has established herself as a top player for the Razorbacks.

2011 RECAP The 2011 Razorback women’s tennis team came into the spring looking for its fourth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and its fifth appear-ance in six years. Not only did the team achieve those goals, but it was also able to host the first two rounds of the tournament on its own home court at the Billingsley Tennis Center. Arkansas defeated first round oppenent Sac-ramento State, but was ousted by No. 15 Clemson in the second round. Even with the early exit in the tournament, the Hogs continued their trend of being a viable player in the Southeastern Conference , finishing with an 18-10 record overall and 6-5 in the SEC. Arkansas began the 2011 dual match cam-paign with 11 straight ranked matches. After open-ing the year with two wins against No. 66 North Texas and No. 36 Texas A&M, the Razorbacks trav-eled to South Bend, Ind. to participate in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Looking to advance to the ITA National Indoor Champion-ships, the Hogs needed to beat No. 41 Utah and No. 4 Notre Dame. Arkansas did both to advance and earned their first win against a top five team since 2008. Riding the high of the big victory, Arkansas continued to roll through their schedule, winning three of their next four matches before the Indoors Championship. However, their first match of the prestigious tournament slated them to face top-ranked Stanford in the first round. The Cardinal proved to be too much, but the Hogs recovered on day two to defeat No. 18 Wash-ington. It was the Arkansas’ first ever win in the tournament under Coach Hegarty. Throughout the season, the Hogs were nearly unbeatable at home, losing only four matches, three of which occurred in confer-ence play. Individually, the Razorbacks were led by senior Anouk Tigu, who played as the consistent No. 1 on

the team and was ranked in the top-30 for nearly the entire season. Tigu finished the year with a 26-11 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Individual Singles Tournament. Overall, five Razorback players finished the year with over 20 singles wins and three doubles teams earned at least 12 wins. Tigu and sophomore Claudine Paulson won 27 matches alone and fin-ished the year with a No. 18 ranking. Of the other Hog singles players that fin-ished with at least 20 wins, Emily Carbone won the second highest amount of matches next to Tigu. Her 25-16 junior year, sets her up nicely to finish with a strong senior year. With only the loss of Tigu to graduataion, the Razorbacks will have four returning players, in-cluding three seniors in 2012. With the multitude of experience coming back, a fifth straight appear-ance in the NCAA Tournament will most likely be in the cards for the 2012 Razorbacks.

Arkansas' All-Americans

Arkansas netted its first two All-Americans in 1999 when Chin Bee Khoo finished the year ranked in the Top 20 and Maria Pavlidou played her way to the quarterfinals at the NCAA Cham-pionships in Gainesville, Fla. In 2000, Khoo became the first-ever two-time All-American for the Razorbacks when she ad-vanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Championships in Malibu, Calif. Khoo was not finished though. In 2001 she became the program’s only three-time All-American when she was seeded in the top 16 of the NCAA Singles Championships in Stone Moun-tain, Ga.

In the span of two seasons, Aurelija Miseviciute rocketed to the top of the col-legiate women’s tennis world to become the most decorated and successful women’s tennis player in University of Arkansas his-tory. The two-time All-American, only the third women’s tennis player in school history to earn that status, finished her Ar-kansas career as the leader in career singles wins (125), career doubles wins (86), career singles winning percentage (.886), singles wins in a season (52) and singles season winning percentage (.897). Miseviciute led Arkansas to back-to-back SEC Western Divi-sion titles and led the Razorbacks to their highest team finish in school history in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and a return trip in 2009. She began the 2008 season with a

preseason ranking of 117 and began her climb when she captured the ITA Indoor Championship in 2007. Miseviciute repeated the feat in 2008. Also that year, she reached the national semifinals in singles -- the highest performance by a Razorback women’s tennis player -- and the NCAA round of 16 in doubles with partner Ela Kaluder. She also advanced to the quarterfinals in singles at the 2009 NCAA Tourna-ment.

All of her success was noticed as she was honored at the 2009 SEC Player of the Year. She also garnered first team All-SEC recognition in 2008 and 2009. In the classroom she excelled, being named the 2008 and 2009 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was also named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America sec-ond team in 2008 and was a finalist for the Honda Award for women’s tennis (2008 and 2009).
