Keith Puryear is in his eighth season as the Navy women’s tennis head coach in 2015-16. Puryear is the only head coach in the history of the Navy women’s tennis program. He mentored a club program in his first year during the 2008-09 season and the program has been at the varsity level ever since. Puryear needed just five seasons to reach the 100-win mark at Navy as he reached the milestone during the 2013-14 season. He currently owns a 121-37 record in six varsity seasons in An-napolis. Puryear has led the Mids to a 22-3 record during the Patriot League Regular Season and the team is 89-18 in home dual matches. Puryear came to Annapolis after spending 19 years as the head tennis coach at UMBC. Puryear coached the men’s team for all 19 seasons, while also coaching the women’s team for his final 17 seasons. In 24 seasons as a women’s tennis head coach, Puryear owns an all-time record of 336-164. Combined with his 228-176 career record as men’s tennis head coach, Puryear’s all-time combined coaching record is an impressive 564-340. Puryear has led the Mids to at least the Patriot League Semi-finals in each of their first six seasons as a conference mem-ber. Navy has also made four trips to the league championship match. In 2014-15 Puryear led Navy to a 20-7 overall record and Navy beat Army for the first time in series history with its 4-3 Star Match win at West Point. Puryear led Navy to its fifth-straight 20-win season and with its 4-0 conference record, Navy went undefeated in Patriot League play for the third time in program history. Navy received the No. 1 seed for the Patriot League Tourna-ment and carried a 12-match winning streak into the tournament championship match, where the Mids fell to Boston University. Under Puryear’s direction, three Midshipmen earned All-Patri-ot League Second-Team Honors. Junior Logan Antill, freshman Amanda Keller and freshman Kristine Rojo were each named to the all-conference second team. In 2013-14 Puryear led Navy to a 21-8 overall record, the program’s fourth straight 20-win season. Navy advanced to the Patriot League Semifinals and the Mids rattled off seven straight dual wins from late January to early February. Puryear led Navy to a milestone on April 13 when a 7-0 sweep of Loyola gave Navy’s its 100th program win. Three Midshipmen earned All-Patriot League honors with senior Erin Snook being named to the all-league first team. Senior captain Darien Sears and sophomore Sam Droop were both selected to the all-league second team. Snook graduated as Navy’s all-time leader in career in singles wins (90), doubles wins (61), combined wins (151) and career singles dual wins (151). Puryear was named the USPTA Mid-Atlantic Section College Coach of the Year for 2014. Additionally, Mikaela Carlson was named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team. She became the first Navy women’s tennis player to earn academic all-league honors. In 2012-13, with his first full recruiting class serving as the team’s leaders as seniors, Puryear’s squad compiled a 25-5 re-cord, setting a school record for wins. After starting the year with a 2-3 record, the Midshipmen ran off a school-record 17 straight wins and would finish the year by winning 23 of its last 25 match-es. The Midshipmen reached the Patriot League Tournament finals for the third straight year and finished the year ranked 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Atlantic region rankings. Three players earned all-Patriot League accolades, including 2013 grad Emani Decquir, who was honored as Navy’s first major award winner, the Patriot League Player of the Year. Puryear would wins his 500th career match early in the year in

a 7-0 blanking of Atlantic 10 power St. Bonaventure and during the Mids’ win streak, Navy recorded victories over regional pow-ers Richmond, Drexel, James Madison and Delaware. In 2011-12, Puryear guided the Midshipmen back to the Pa-triot League Tournament finals with a 20-3 overall mark and a 4-0 Patriot League regular-season record while earning the tour-nament’s top seed for the first time in school history. The team ran off 11 straight wins to start the season and finished a sterling 15-1 at home while four players earned all-Patriot League ac-colades. For his efforts, Puryear was named the Wilson / ITA At-lantic Region Coach of the Year. He accomplished all of this with a lineup that included zero seniors. In 2011-12, Puryear led the upstart Navy women’s tennis pro-gram to the Patriot League Tournament finals and a 3-0 Patriot League regular-season mark. The Midshipmen finished the year with a 22-10 record, starting the season with an 11-4 mark, then winning nine of their last 10 matches. Three members of the squad were named to the all-Patriot League team and Puryear was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year by his peers. In 2010-11, with a line-up that featured four freshmen quite regularly, the Midshipmen posted a 13-4 overall record, a 2-1 Patriot League mark and a trip to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. Five of his recruiting classes have been honored as top mid-major classes by the website TennisRecruiting.net and several student-athletes have earned academic and national honors, including 2013 grad Stefanie Ton, who was named the Atlantic Region’s recipient for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award. Prior to arriving in Annapolis, he won over 440 dual matches while coaching both the men’s and women’s team at UMBC. His Retriever squads won 11 conference titles from 1998 to 2007 and he has won almost 60 percent of all his dual-meet competi-tions. Off the court, Puryear was inducted into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame (Class of 2012) and in May 2009, Puryear joined the United States Tennis Association Board of Directors, adding to his already-long list of accomplishments. Puryear won 443 matches and 10 conference coach-of-the-year honors in a decade as the head men’s and women’s coach at UMBC. His men’s teams have appeared in five NCAA Tourna-ments (2000-2003, 2007), while the women have also made five trips (1999-2003) to the NCAA tournament. Puryear’s squads are also successful in the classroom. Navy has a number of players named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades, and UMBC’s women’s tennis squad post-ed a grade-point average of 3.49 in 2008, best amongst all the programs in the America East Conference. Puryear is a certified USPTA professional and instructor for the Tennis Institute, where he coaches several MATA and na-tionally-ranked juniors. In May 2009, Puryear joined the Board of Directors with the United States Tennis Association (Maryland) as an at-large director. He also plays at the competitive level in both Maryland and in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association, where he has been ranked in the top five in the state and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in doubles on four different occasions. In 1998, Puryear was ranked No. 1 in the state in the men’s 35 and older, and in 1999, was No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Puryear played two years of tennis at Howard University be-fore transferring to UMBC. Following a year at UMBC, Puryear enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1983-88. Returning to his studies at UMBC, Puryear graduated with a B.S. in economics in the spring of 1990. Puryear was selected Big South Conference Women’s Coach of the Year in 1997-98, and was the NEC Women’s Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2001. In addition, he was selected as the NEC Men’s Coach of the Year for 1999-2000 and 2000-01. In 2002, he accomplished a double, earning both men’s and women’s coach-of-the-year honors, and in 2003, he captured the wom-en’s award for the third-straight year. Puryear is certified as a tennis instructor by the USPTA and USPTR. In 2009 Puryear was certified as a High Performance Training Coach by the United States Tennis Association. Puryear and his wife, Venida, have two daughters, Jasmynn and Keri.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

H 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally.

H 92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate.

H Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football).

H Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

H Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

H Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

H There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

H Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.

H Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition.

H Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

H The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion.

H Loyola won a pair of NCAA Tournament games to become the first Patriot League women’s lacrosse team to advance to the quarterfinal round, and also finished in the top 10 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll.

H Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, includding Navy’s Joseph Greenspan as a first-team selection in men’s soccer.

H Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005.

H Lehigh’s Ryan Mahalsky became the first Patriot Leaguer since 2007-08 and sixth all-time to compete at the NCAA Championships for both cross country and outdoor track and field in the same season.

H Bucknell’s Emma Levendoski competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

H A League record nine student-athletes were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft entering the 2015 season, with Army West Point’s John Glesener, Loyola’s Nikko Pontrello and Colgate’s Ryan Walsh among the top 11 picks.

H Navy’s Joseph Greenspan and Boston University’s Dominique Badji were both selected in the first four rounds of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft.

H Five Patriot Leaguers were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft, with Lehigh’s Justin Pacchioli and Navy’s Stephen Moore each selected in the 10th round.
