national PTA reflections®: Because Arts matterThe National PTA reflections® Program is designed to enhance quality arts education for students in preschool through grade 12, encouraging them to create works of art in the areas of Dance Choreography, Film Production, literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts.

Hundreds of thousands of students participate in the reflections Program through their local PTAs each year – entering in four grade divisions, including Primary, Intermediate, Middle School and High School – and their works are recognized at the local, council, regional, state and national levels. The students listed in this program have received national recognition for their creativity, artistic merit, mastery of medium and interpretation of the 2011-2012 reflections Program theme, “Diversity Means...”

My choreography reflects diversity as two different girls come together as one union. Personally, when thinking of diversity, i picture how in school a group of friends can be so alike yet so significantly different. My piece begins with one girl who portrays the image of a “nerd” and another who enters as the “popular” girl. throughout the whole performance the “popular” girl works to convince the “nerd” to not be afraid to project who she really is.

there are so many people who fear being different or unique. What my piece represents is the importance of being who you are. if there wasn’t diversity, there would be no one to stand out and present contrast. it is because of our differences that we come together and explore styles and attitudes that are foreign to us.

— Racquel Charles

Literatureoutstanding Interpretation winnerMelanie Mignucci“Es la lluvia Que le Molesta”literature / High School DivisionStaples High School PTAwestport, CT

“Es la lluvia que le Molesta” (it is the rain that bothers him) is an original short story about what it means to be uncomfortable in your own skin, split between two sides of yourself. the unnamed speaker of the story, a latina teenager, observes a scene in Spanish between the proprietor of a Mexican deli and a young boy that catches her off guard. Her white friend cannot understand the exchange, and does not understand why the speaker has been made uncomfortable. the narrator then is torn between being an american teenager, enjoying ‘authentic’ foreign culture, or diving deep into Chicano culture and accepting it as part of herself. the story illustrates the many different kinds of diversity experienced by minorities in america, through one’s past or one’s present.

— Melanie Mignucci

Es La Lluvia Que Le MolestaI woke up with Nat next to me on the hard pallet that folded up into a hard couch when we weren’t sleeping together. She had been awake for a while and I knew this because her eyes were clear and bright and makeup-less and her hair was smoothed down and smelled like coconut and the couch didn’t and maybe she was just sitting there for a second. She had a book of crossword puzzles in her hands but it wasn’t open. She saw me flex my calf under the blanket and said “Hi.” I turned halfway towards her and mouthed “Hi” back and pulled the blanket over my hair and stretched under the blanket for a while. when I was done I came back out and Nat had left and I heard running water in the bathroom. I took off my sweatshirt and shorts because I felt like it was going to be warm that day and if I couldn’t shower I was definitely going to change. Nat has this shag carpeting on the floor of her room that was left over from the last owner but I knew she kept it because she thought it was kitschy, and it felt as if I were wearing socks but I wasn’t. I wished I was, but I wasn’t. The lights were off but the sun was foggy and came through her windows and settled on the floor and made the room seem like it, too, had just woken up. Most walls of Nat’s room were a pastel neon color and the other a series of undulating blue and darker blue lines, painted to emulate algae. The pastel walls were covered in wallpaper strips and magazine clippings and guitars that didn’t work but man did they look cool. It bothered me that you couldn’t see most of the wall but Nat had only half a year of high school left and so she probably wasn’t going to change it now. The doorknob jiggled and stuck and I pulled on a pair of jeans that was lying on the ground, jumping a little bit to get them over my legs. Nat came in. She hadn’t showered. “we should...” she said. She drew out the should as far as it would go, then stopped. She had this habit of stretching words, sentences, exaggerating inflections. After a few days with her I’d pick up on it too. “we should... get coffee annnnnd go to ortega’s!” Her statements, whenever she said them like this, became exclamations. like for sale signs stapled to a telephone pole. Advertising to the idea of an audience. She said this with pause. As if I would say no. It was about eight in the morning. ortega’s was a drive all the way up route 3 almost to Massachusetts from here. Maybe an hour, hour and a half. But it was a nice drive and it wasn’t that far. we’d listen to good music and, besides, I didn’t want to go home yet. And Hacienda sold a pound of rice with frijoles negros and platanos and sangria soda for less than five dollars and I was in no position to pass that up. So I said, “That sounds ¡Awesome!” and pulled my sweater on over my head. outside and walking to my car it was warm and cool together. Fog rolled in off the Sound and into the streets and it was humid but the air was sharp with impending autumn. It was Sunday and the sky was grey and solemn. By eleven we were in town, past hazy blue ridged mountains and open road six lanes across. Six tractor-trailer lanes with ample shoulders curving in the valleys of the southernmost of the southern Berkshires. The car jerked over the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and into a slot between two cars collided with poverty. ’99 Tercel red and rust colored and its windows cracked open and a nameless post-blue sedan, now a pastiche of black doors and spoilers and passenger side mirrors. Next to them was an open dumpster and a man came out from the laundromat next door with a black plastic bag and glared at our car and threw it in. Bottles clanged together but did not break. He wore a baby blue polo shirt and a gold chain that rode up above the collar and under his graying black greased back hair. He wiped his hands together and walked away and his shoes squeaked. I killed the engine. Nat turned to me and asked, “How stoked are you?” “way stoked,” I said. The engine ticked, cooling... (continued)

music Compositionoutstanding Interpretation winnerPolly Moser“The Flow of water”Music Composition / Middle School DivisionBurleigh Manor Middle School PTAEllicott City, MD

My piece relates to the theme because all people are like water. While we are all so different from each other in culture, looks and style, we are all the same at our core — just like water. Water can come from anywhere in the world, be it a mountain stream or the vast ocean. Water is always water and nothing can ever change that. Just like we are all living, breathing people no matter how we appear or how we think. My piece helps to illustrate that everyone

is different and unique in their own way, but just like water we are all flowing through the land and through life to the same place. and while all water flows to the magnificent ocean, we are flowing through life to our end when we may fondly depart this world. So what i am really trying to say is, diversity is as simple as the flow of water.
